  • The Smooth Tool in Adobe Illustrator can help make your pen tool work look much cleaner. If you're still practicing or perfecting your pen tool work and just can't seem to get those clean, smooth curves - don't worry a few passes over your strokes with the smooth tool and they'll be smooth as silk, or butter, or whatever other really smooth thing you can think of!

    This was an absolute lifesaver. Not a work-related project for me but a personal sketch I wanted to make into a vector for sentimental purposes. I'm good enough with the pen tool for most applications but I could spot the anchor points a mile away and blah. Five minutes of this tool and it's done. I love learning new things. Cheers!

    Thank you so much this is exactly what I needed. I'm only 18, about 6 months into learning illustrator, and about to be a second year college learning this stuff and I have the opportunity currently to make a logo for a restaurant so I need it to be as good as I can make it. This helped me SO MUCH MORE than trying to use the curvature and pen tool. SO helpful THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

I've been practicing the PEN tool for a few days now...(new to Illustrator) and I'm really determined to master this thing and I've pretty much got it...but I noticed on a few of my trace exercises that there were a couple of places that no matter what I did I just could not get it exactly smooth...this is perfect. Thank you so much for your training. Blessings.

      School isn't the best option for everyone! I'm 100% self taught. I went to school over 10 years into my career as a design as I thought that piece of paper might help me land bigger clients - it didn't. What helped me land bigger clients was being confident and continually learning my craft to be the best designer I could be.

    Hi Mike! First off, I find your videos on Illustrator very helpful.
    Now, to the point: After watching this video I am left not knowing exactly how this tool works. What I mean is - does the line I draw with the smooth tool matter, as in the curves aim towards the line I draw with the smooth tool, or is it irrelevant? Thanks again

    • @MikePickettDesignCo
      @MikePickettDesignCo  3 года назад +1

      @Wonderful thank you, happy to hear you find my tutorials helpful! As for the proper usage of the Smooth Tool there's really no accuracy required with it. You'll want to be close to the line you're looking to adjust, I try to put the circle cursor right over top of the area I'm trying to smooth out. Direction doesn't matter. You can use long strokes along a path or short quick click strokes to adjust a single anchor point. I hope that answers your question?

    • @MikePickettDesignCo
      @MikePickettDesignCo  2 года назад

      Click on the 3 dots at the bottom of the tools menu, then either find and drag the smooth over or click the menu icon in the top of the fly out and click Advanced.

  • @anasshah548
    @anasshah548 2 года назад +1

    sir this tool is really helpful but i couldnt reach it can i have a shortcut key for it?

    • @MikePickettDesignCo
      @MikePickettDesignCo  2 года назад

      Hey Anas! Thank you for the question. There is no built in keyboard shortcut for the Smooth Tool. It's built in with the Shaper Tool (shift + n) and the Pencil tool (n). If you use either of those keyboard shortcuts it will highlight the tool in the tools pallet and you can then click and hold that tool in the pallet to get the fly out to select the Smooth Tool.
      If you still don't see it you may need to show advanced tools - click the 3 dots at the bottom of the tools pallet, then click the hamburger menu in the top right of the fly out and then check Advanced. You should now be able to use the keyboard shortcut for either the Pencil or the Shaper Tool and then click and hold on that tool highlighted in the tool pallet to get the fly out menu to select the smooth tool.
      I hope this helps.

    I brought in a PNG logo, sized it, then saved as export. then i re-opened the export file in illustrator. tried to select my blurry letters to smooth, now my draw tool bar is completely greyed out. Can't select smooth tools at all.

    • @MikePickettDesignCo
      @MikePickettDesignCo  Год назад

      A png would need to be turned into a vector first. You can use the image trace tool to crate the vector and then use the various tools on that vector. Illustrator will not make changes to Easter images like png, jpeg or other image formats.

    im so stupid. every time i select the lines i want to smooth, click with the smooth tool, and use the smooth tool, the selection i originally made disappears and only one line is selected and barely anything is smoothed. does anyone know what im doing wrong?

    • @MikePickettDesignCo
      @MikePickettDesignCo  3 года назад +1

      You need to only smooth one line at a time. If you select more than 1 line and then click the smooth tool it will deselect everything.

      The Astute plugin, I assume that's what you're talking about, is an amazing set of plug-ins!
