This was super-fun! Next time, let's cover "As Good As It Gets!"
You're eventually gonna wear me down and we'll do it!
Who all hit the thumbs down at 9:19 , white boys and privilege humm so im gonna guess that every single real life killer is now a bunch a privileged white boys .... cue the Menendez brothers.
Did this nigga just compare the scream movie to the son of sam movie which is based off an actual case wow!
Im shocked that these assholes even brought up shooting, so from this piece of shit video im suppose to believe that those students acting just like the kids in scream when that tragedy happen gonna by this logic. BULLSHIT!
Billy saying he didn't believe in motive makes sense since even though he killed Maureen Prescott because his dad cheated on his mother with her causing Mrs Loomis to leave he had no motive for the killing spree he and Stu went on a year later in the original Scream. They killed because they wanted to and liked it.
True yet all the kills were plots for the end game. Casey death was to get at Sidney psyche and taunt her giving she sat next to her in class. Steve was a casualty but a necessary kill. The principal was killed as a smoke screen and a distraction to get most of the people to leave the party and the leftovers (cameraman, Dewey & Gale, Randy with the last three surviving) were in the way of the end goal. Tatum being murdered was probably a ritual type thing between Billy and Stu given Billy was planning on killing Sidney and framing her Dad. So while they did take pleasure from the kills all the deaths were planned to a point and weren't done due to pleasure alone but premeditated for the end game which involved their scheme and Sidney.
5:45 It makes sense that some of the Ghostfaces trip, fall and are generally clumsy while chasing their victims since all but two of them are teenagers.
Roman doesn't exist. Try again.
Roman, Mickey, Mrs Loomis.
And they're wearing a Halloween mask. They're hard to walk with as is. Can't imaging chasing someone with it on
@@ThaRealOne0 tbf do we know how old Mickey is? He could be 19-21?
I would love in scream 5 if they adress this by having a character watching a documentary called "Stab a true story" where we see Sidney being interviewed describing her life and how "the scariest part of her life is the aftermath, where she's alone and the world has moved on to the next story" cutting to grainy police crime scene footage of stus house after the first movies events.
This could be the new meta for new age horror. That its NOT a movie and there are no rules.
Mate, this is absolutely incredible. I've been trying to put my finger on why so many Scream imitators just don't work and why I find 'meta' horror-comedies so frustrating but this really nails it. I think the imitators that succeed (Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, The Cabin in the Woods, and maybe The Final Girls) are the ones who really have a reason for being meta rather than just trying to steal Williamson's voice.
Thanks so much for this video!
I would say Tucker and Dale worked but I don’t know if you would consider it in the same vein.
@@DrGamelove personally I feel like it's not quite in the same vein. It feels like its trying to be more of a comedy than anything else, whereas Scream (and others) fall more on the side of horror? Still an absolutely class movie though
The first two Screams changed the game and horror and slasher genres very skillfully, thoughtfully, wonderfully, and full proof
RIP Wes Raven. Thanks for giving me my favorite slasher movie ever. Good shit Matt
Quoth the Craven nevermore.
I'm an horror fan who really hates the Slasher genre (I find it more voyeuristic and distasteful than anything else) but Scream really did say "here's everything wrong with current horror movies now let's make something actually good out of it" and now it's one of my favorite movies ever.
There are some great ones out there like "The Guest" & "You're next"
Cabin in the Woods does a good job of this too.
What horror genres do you like if not slasher?
@Nexus Six What genres do you like??
@Mar. You missed the point of Scream then, it wasn’t saying what was wrong with slasher movies, it was a love letter to slasher movies.
The reason why Scream and Scream 2 worked with the meta commentary was because it was subtle with it, where as by Scream 4 the meta stuff was in your face to the point of hitting you over the head with it. Which is why I wasn’t too much of a fan of films like Detention and The Cabin In The Woods, while i did like Cabin In The Woods my problem was the meta stuff was so in your face to the point it knocks you out, it’s like after a joke someone keeps saying “ do you get it”, “ do you get it”, “do you get it”, yes we fucking get it. I don’t mind films that take the meta route only if it’s subtle.
4:10 In the 5th film Gale blames herself for the murder sprees, thinking that if she'd never reported on Billy and Stu killing Maureen Prescott and their killings a year later it wouldn't have inspired the copycat killers of the sequels even though they'd have found excuses to kill regarless.
Last time I watched scream I was gagging over how bourgeois the houses were- I like your take and privilege and desensitized people is the perfect way to describe it.
Such an underrated channel, keep it up. 👍
Definitely!!!!
"And many that tried and failed"
Sees The Faculty...
Me: triggered
Shaggy was the Monster all along
He got tired of capturing people in masks and decided to become one himself.
Ruh roh
@@Xehanort10 he became what he swore to hunt. He probs got rid of the gang as well
Oh the 90s... when you could actually kill a person with a tv
I was more of a fan of The Faculty when I was a teen. Probably because it really leaned into the idea of teen alien(hehe)ation - which Scream also did to a point.
The Faculty is great.
Scream and The Faculty go hand in hand for me. They radiate a certain vibe that really pulls me in. I wish there was more horror like them.
Just recently watched these movies for the first time, so this video was well timed !
The sequels weren't as good, but I really loved the first Scream movie.
SCREAM franchise also, imo, is a commentary on 'Generational Violence', how twisted and depraved the next generation of killers will be. No more motives or personal vendettas. Just blood-thirst for fame.
7:47
The whole *”we’re not done here”* line during Drew Barrymore’s all too brief stint at the beginning of the movie sort of gave the twist away immediately.
This has a criminal lack of views.
I was already subbed to La'Ron (and you too for that matter) but I had no idea this video existed until I started binge watching your horror retrospectives at work last night.
Nothing like the 90s and early 00 movies were the best. I miss blockbuster and Hollywood video. 😭
The Scary movie series meta fiction parodies meta fiction
I came here to say this. The Scary Movie franchise was so successful because it commented on what we we’re thinking.
That's partly why those films are terrible. They are parodying a parody. Scream already was the perfect slasher spoof. The genius of Scream was that it also was a perfect example of the genre it was parodying.
I like your Profile pic
Taegan Evert thanks
The fact you got to add "at the time" to the sentence "which was the deadliest school shooting in US history" is the most depressing part of this video.
I watched Dawson’s Creek in its entirety because of Williamson. So much time wasted but the one horror episode of it was pretty good. I would argue of all the copycat failures, The Faculty does not belong on that list, just a quick scan of the comments it seems I’m not alone. It may not be the classic that Scream is but it’s a decent 90s sci Fi horror flick.
I completely forgot Shaggy was in this film!!
I gotta rewatch this for sure and way you analyzed this film was awesome.
"Zoinks Scoob. I think I'm gonna go kill some kids."
"Rokay Rhaggy."
I still remember being 16 or 17 Watching Scream at a friend's Halloween party. A friend Jared got up to use the toilet after the "I'll be right back" moment. Turned to us and said "i'll be right back" in a Shaggy voice. Here is Scream media teenagers 10 years later were now qoute its media moments in the real world.
My favorite horror film of all time
In this Modern World, Scream is the Perfect Reflection of our Community Obsess by Horrors Tropes, Slasher, the Psychology of it, and the Myth that Believe in it. I'm an Indonesian Boy, and I've heard Many Killers that Kill because Movies. My Advice... Well i can Not say it for myself but, Don't watch Movies that you don't Understand as a Kid or you don't Understand! Right...
Dude I love channels like this such a good channel just discovered today and definitely subbed with notifications on
Oh my God you made the analysis of this I've been wishing for.
The persona of Ghostface remains the same throughout the Scream series, featuring a black hood and cloak with a jagged base and a white rubber mask resembling a ghost with a screaming expression. Though each iteration of Ghostface is human, it often exhibits extreme durability against physical harm, high levels of physical strength, and an almost supernatural stealth ability; able to appear and disappear in seemingly impossible situations.
I. Loved. This. Video. So insightful about my favorite slasher film. Thank you!
woo!! looking forward to it
I love this movie! Been my favorite horror movie since I was a kid.
Good stuff.
Man...
I really like this essay.
The fact that there was actually 187 comments before me was pretty cool.

I recently watched all 4 screams and I loved them so much even tho 3&4 were terrible I just loved the universe and the characters and how it was aware of itself and made fun of itself
Credit The Midnight in the description of this video for your use of Days of Thunder. You've done it on other uploads but seems you forgot with this one.
Love the Halloween music one of the best in the film
Loved this, and I loved seeing my boys together again ❤️
Thanks, Owen! I imagined you to be one of the killers under that mask so that our trio could stay together.
@@MattDraper Right? Because picturing him as Dewey is just cruel!
How in the hell does that have anything to do with white privilege?
The first three Scream movies are my second favourite trilogy.
Great review. Scream, Blair Witch, and if you count American Psycho are still amongst the best in the past 25 years IMO. However, there's not much left that you can do since the slasher hey day of the 80s. Or maybe I should say oversaturated. I cannot think of one specific film, but j-horror as a genre, like WTF is goin' on over there..... what separates Scream from its peers too is it's pacing and it's an exhilarating ride.
What do you think about the New Scream Trailer?
Great video
So I love all 4 films....
Scream 4 is good
when i seen someone named "Laron" in this title i should have it would be some bullshit!
I can only imagine where they're going to take Scream now with the 5th movie.
Billys son
My hatred for the Kevin Smith impersonator who ruined this video is intense
I always found it disturbing how much Billy and Stu reminded me of Columbine
The ghost face in the bathroom was a prank not the real killers
white privallage lol
I love how it was simply intended to be a self aware horror movie but in this day and age everything is about white privilege, being white, or privilege.
I don’t think Williamson was attempting to comment on white privilege - more a desire to naturally exploit human dynamics in a realistic way. Look at his other work: his adapted screenplay for ‘ I know what you did last summer’, The Following, and the faculty.
In order to explore the concepts of victimhood, isolationism, and the human nature of a serial killer, it’s inevitable a segment of society would need to be pursued. IMO the “white privilege”element is a byproduct of creating an environment where a relatively reasonable series of events could play out. In doing this, imo the commentary concedes the ridiculous idea of this could occur in black America. But that is rooted in history - see the often neglected, depraved history of the Atlanta Ripper whose body count is multiples more than his British counterpart yet many are fully unaware. Moreover, it’s done in a way that’s 4th wall breaking. I don’t need to be white to get it. In fact, I’m not white and I get it. It inspired me to do writing myself. And in many ways, this meta satire was weaponized as I’ve explained above in comedic fashion with the Scary Movie Franchise directed by Keenan who clearly was inspired by the same thing.
Point is, it still requires a relatively large army of aloof cannon fodder but sprinkled in are the realistic figures that must negotiate a situation where odds are closer to even and reasonable decisions make for cathartic victory. I can not relate nor can I empathize with a character battling in vein a masked shape lurking around any corner who can not be killed. But I can put myself very easily in every situation in scream and immerse myself much better. IMO that’s the brilliance of scream. The “white privilege” aspect is more a hammed up staging arena designed to let the audience feel like they can settle in and relate to characters better. And in many ways, I’d argue it inspired an entire counter POV in horror now being mastered by Jordan Peele. What is ‘Get Out’ if not Scream but from the POV of a black person?
Well? If we are going to point at "white privilege" and "dissent from reality" combined with movies? Then I would worry more about a robber Point Break Set it Off Heat sort of thing happening in reality while the home invasion murder stuff is happening. They're both important things to worry about. People also watch crime action and drama movies too. Oh, and that whole "snorting a mountain of cocaine or a whole eight ball" in one day all because you watched movies like Scarface or The Departed? Is magic only in the movies. Watch something like "American Me" and touch some grass, homie.
Scream 2 and 4 are good sequels. Better than 3. Nothing beats 1
"Multi-rational"? Is that a word now?
Her name is pronounced like Never without the R...
Scream was good. I enjoyed Scream 2.
Thumbs down for the white privilege nonsense. Otherwise, great video.
Yes, Billy and Stu are white.
Yes, Billy and Stu are privileged.
Are these details essential to the story? Gonna say no.
I would like the film if the casting was different. Insufferable people
Well, after browsing through the comments after the video and taking note of the creator's responses, I have to say your political bias is kind of off-putting. I mostly enjoyed the video, apart from the irrelevant jabs at white people, but I think I'll take my white male self elsewhere after this one.
And to be clear, I'm not posting this to try to make you change your approach or to throw a fit, I just wanted to leave a clear indication that it cost you at least one potential supporter. One isn't much, but I'm sure I'm not the only one, even if I'm the only that bothers to say so. Very disappointing after an otherwise good video.
Best of luck to you with the channel.
Cost him more than one
+1
@Nexus Six No. I'm just disinterested because I came to hear a commentary about a movie, not a bunch of irrelevant jabs at white people because the creators can't keep their politics out of it when it isn't relevant. The wealthiness of the characters is not what I'm talking about, but I have no desire to convince you or rewatch the video to collect timestamps to show as examples. My comment was only left here as a bit of feedback for the creators to see and take in or ignore at their own discretion.
lmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
nothing political about pointing out white privilege little dude.
Did La’Ron mention that the characters are white and how white people be disaffected n shit yo? I’m not sure it was enough.
White Privilege........and you lost me
@AOW BatThor people use something that exist and has been rampant in america lol?
@@ThaRealOne0 Yeah, blame everything and everyone but yourself.
@@anthonyperez1410 so a black man is to blame for white supremacy? please re read what you sent.
@suny123boy1 so I seen you literally took time out of your day to reply to me 5+ times. I’d like to start of by saying- you’re a loser, secondly, reverse racism doesn’t exist- stop trying. third and final response to you, once my people enslave your people for 400+ years, come of with a word to remind you you’re trash, and then create a system to keep you at the bottom, only then will I be racist towards whites. goodbye loser, enjoy talking to yourself.
@Ask Chris
I can tell, because you missed where Ron mentioned "Absentee parents" as part of the problem...
i.e. it's not a race thing, it's an environmental thing, buuuuuuuuuut since the media never shows examples of "other" people doing it, it's seen as "white privilege."
I always thought about the columbine connections with Scream but I never really thought about how white people in this movie react to the killings versus the Italian’s reaction in Summer of Sam.
Scary Movie poked fun at it:
Black TV Reporter: "We're here reporting live for "Black T.V.", white folks are dead so we gettin' the f*ck out of here. "
There is also another theme in the movie that I caught in addition to everything else you talked about, mainly : toxic masculinity.
At the end of the movie, the motives of the killers are revealed . It's revealed that Billy wanted to kill Sidney because her mother slept with his father. However they seem much more fixated on the fact that that Sidney's mom was promiscuos, and they use names like 'whore' and 'slut' to describe her. On top of that, Billy constantly pressures Sidney to sleep with him, and when you find out that him and Stu were the ones that killed Sidney's mom, (and it is implied that they were the ones that molested her) it gets all kinds of squick. In the end, the killers just turn out to be a pair of entitled teenagers, which again subverts the idea of traditional slasher movie villains.
Speaking of which, considering that the killers used the Ghostface identity to torment Sidney, it was cathartic as hell to see Sidney fight back against the killers by dressing up as Ghostface, essentially turning their own weapon against them.
It's ironic that despite Billy constantly insulting Sidney's mother the moment Sidney calls him a pansy assed mama's boy Billy hits Stu with the phone and starts smashing up the house looking for her.
Really dude? Cut the soy.
And I'll never be able to enjoy it because seeing "Scream" (that's right I know him more as that than the actual ghost face name) everywhere as the cheap Halloween of the 2000s and Scary Movie first. I know I know 2016 was way too long to check out such a retro movie. Hehehe she tried to get squeeze through a dog door.
Where else was she supposed to escape to?
Would have to watch the scene again, but IIRC, whichever side we see Tatum from during her attempt to get through the doggy door, her breasts are on the camera side. Sex sells🤣
I can't stand self aware horror, zero tension, no suspense, nothing scary especially when everyone is mostly an asshole self aware that they are an asshole in a horror movie. Trashy is the word that comes to mind. Still an iconic costume, especially when it already existed before the movie.
Do you think it only annoys you because of all the other films that tried to emulate the self-aware horror comedy?
@@derek96720 you actually have a point, and I can't take them seriously because of it more than likley. I also didn't like new nightmare that wes craven made for similar reasons.
Scream is full of tension ache suspense. The opening scene is one of the best in the genre.
Dawson's Creek would have been better with murder...oh wait.
That's Riverdale
Decent video till it suddenly got weirdly racist.
10:48 you've made multiple white people references at this point, why? It feels like racist subtext.
Otherwise, good video, interesting listen.
Good to know I wasn't the only one who noticed that. I was wondering if I imagined it or not with how irrelevant anyone being white was in each mention.
You wouldn’t care if it was the other way 🤦🏾♀️ you would probably explain why it “wasn’t racist”
You people have such double standards.
@@adrianasabode1583 you don't know anything about what anyone else would say if it was the other way around. And either way, that's irrelevant. It isn't the other way around and if it was, these two would be getting flayed alive in the comments.

The Drew Barrymore section is the only real good stuff in Scream. The rest is just too dated to be successful outside of nostalgia, which is perfectly fine. I’d classify it as a time capsule series: good for exploring the time period, but not as effective as when it was released.
Yeah yeah, whatever kid.
Was enjoying the video until the mention of “white privilege” 🙄
@sjalusi1
Yeah, confusing a race issue with an environmental issue is a common mistake these days.
You consider Scream horror movies?
I'm sorry to hear that
Don’t tell me you consider it a comedy 🤣😂
There's a long-standing argument over whether they are "Horror" or "Satire of Horror".
Don't care either way. The original is great, and set the bar too high for any of the sequels to match.
