- I see so many pilots struggle to hold altitude under IFR and often it's because they are trying to fly the altimeter. In this video, I show you Joe's 2nd IFR lesson where I work to tie together the VFR world with the IFR world. This is the secret to holding altitude while under IFR.

“Your whole windscreen shrunk to a 2.5” tiny window” !!! That makes so much sense! I wish I knew that when I started my IFR training 🙄
You posted this video at the perfect time. My instrument training has been going great except for this concept. This video is a game changer for me. Thank you!!
"Also allow time for the attitude indicator to self-right after a prolonged turn at a standard rate". Excellent information here, especially after investing in a new attitude indicator that I noticed would precess slightly after a prolonged/continuous standard rate turn. The inverted 'V' scan is perfect for this, and you saved me $$$ not having to replace something that's already working to the best of its abilities (as I can't afford the G5s as of yet). Thanks so much!
Great video as always. The reason we struggle so much is because the FAA's instrument flying handbook even says that the Altimeter is primary for pitch changes so we hyper focus on it.
Jason your skill at teaching is amazing! Thanks again for another great video.
Awesome video! Concise and clear. Thanks, keep up the good work!
WOW!!!.... knew this, thanks for the refresher...
It was the most challenging for me when I did my training back in the early 90s. It all became very clear to me when I became a CFII and saw my students making those same mistakes. 👍🏻
great to see your helpful videos that actually do help
Thank you very much for all your lesson, love your teaching style - so simple and uncomplicated. It helped me get through my PPL now starting IFR!!!
You’re awesome, man. Thank you for this video.
Omg gosh what huge help!! That’s crazy how small that window is.
Great video. Thank you for posting!
Thanks Jason. I appreciate you.
My first lesson in my instrument training was to fly the attitude indicator.... when I see this type of videos and read comments I wonder what the heck are pilots learning. This is basic for me in all kinds of flying, (VFR of course I look outside), but I learned early on not to chase needles, got to say I had a very good CFI. This is a very informative video, great job!! Thanks.
within just this video, I was able to pick up a concept that I have been searching for during my entire instrument training! love your videos Jason! keep em comin!!!
Awesome! 🙌 wilco
That’s awesome! Wish I had thought that way when I started IFR a few years ago
This was helpful. Many thanks, Jason.
I’m in IR training right now, trying to get rated before Jan 2121 and your videos are amazing, simple, helpful, and very enjoyable! Thank you 👏😃
Excellent presentation. Simple basics are so important.
Great lesson! Thanks!
This is awesome! Thank you so much. I had been struggling to hold altitude. This video changed it all for me and i am able to hold altitude with great precision even in turbulence. I have my instrument check ride in about 4 days. Thank you so much!
Passed my instrument Checkride and this video was extremely helpful
Great one!!
Great stuff thanks.
Thank you for these excellent videos! I have been flying for over 40 years and I always learn something very useful.
I have commercial airplane, instrument, and commercial helicopter tickets ... I have owned several aircraft (both fixed and rotor wing) ... and I can state my training has universally been fragmented and disappointing ... your crystal clear explanations are the best I've ever heard ... thanks again!!!
Great!! Trying this on Sunday!
Excellent tip
Great video. Thanks
Great points/Refresher....
The attitude indicator is one of the most under-taught instruments in the PPL. I learned SO much about it getting my instrument.
Brian Garrett YES!!! is the first thing I learned in my training, fly the attitude indicator and not chase needles
Yah. It's a control instrument. Reacts instantly.
I’d like to see that vertical checklist and how it’s laid out. Need to make one for my Cherokee
Your videos are awesome
Pretty neat for the second lesson, "Attitude + Power = Performance" is a must know for any IFR pilot. Just don't forget that the most important part of instrument flying is maintaining a proper and constant scan. Fixating on any one instrument is never a good idea. Steep turns under the hood are also a great way to teach them to keep their scan active, there's a reason they're always included in transport aircraft simulator training.
Literally couldn't have been better timing. A week before instrument check ride. I need all the tricks!
MUCHAS GRACIAS👌 👌 👌
Great, thank you. :-)
Those check lists are awesome. Like the size and how the color pattern separates different phases of flight. Where can they be bought?
Jason needs some Failed Instrument Covers
Windward65 haha, maybe. I haven’t tried very often.
I’m in the habit of skewering one piece of paper on the attitude indicator knob with VFR students to use the window first and I like them to have to get past the paper to see the airspeed. It’s not that they can’t look at it it’s just that there’s a slight barrier so they tend to focus outside more. Because of that habit ... and because it’s maybe more realistic that failed instrument covers might not be handy, won’t stick, and may cause unnecessary distraction ...
I guess I’m stuck on paper 🤷♂️
I suggest when VFR flying you look outside occasionally.
Jason, do you have the NAFI Master CFI?
Cause you would be a sure in!
So thankful for your flying advice.
haha, thank you!
@@TheFinerPoints but seriously, are you a recipient?
You should really go for it if you aren't yet.
I'm 45 hrs into my IR, 40 on a Pa28, 5 on the Pa30 and I seem to not be able to keep altitudes anymore since I passed on the Pa30. :'(
The higher speed and the Aspen 1000 are killing me. :/
It makes no sense to me to place Vsi on the bottom half of the screen, while you have your altitude on your top half of the sceen. 🤕
Hey Jason,
How do you feel about people who don't have the time and money to start flight training now using videos like these to learn to fly in a desktop simulator? Would you recommend against it because of the risk of building incorrect habits without being corrected, or would you encourage it?
Bart Kuivenhoven I would encourage it for the purposes of radio work and procedures but I would try to avoid flying the sim at all costs. It will do damage. The rest of the stuff however will get you way ahead of the game
Thanks for your videos !!
I’m up for the challenge anytime, I could really use these 10 million dollars🤣. Tell me when and where I’ll be there !!! 🤣😁😁
Baminokrat haha ok! Well ... I have to earn it first so help me spread the word 👍🙏🏻🙌💪
Hi Jason! I have a question: in my next episode, I'm sharing my personal favorite RUclips channels. Your channel is one of them ;) Can I include a 10 or 15 sec part of one of your videos (screen grab) to my episode, to promote your channel? Best, Jolmer (@ForFunFlyer)
ForFunFlyer sure. 👍 can you send me an email?
@@TheFinerPoints Sure. What's your address?
@@TheFinerPoints Sent
I love your videos, but I noticed there isn't really any night stuff! Is that something you don't do, or is it just so similar to daytime flying that you don't make videos on it? I'm a student pilot, so your videos give me nice little tips and tricks to use while I train. :)
MrPielover61 it’s a great point I should do some more of it. There’s a good one with Paul and I doing some Ifr stuff but the reality is with two small kids I’m usually home in the evenings. I do have a lot to say about it though so it gets me thinking 🤔
@@TheFinerPoints MrPielover61 It's so hard to get good footage at night. I'm constantly amazed at how well Aviation101 does with it because the night flights I've recorded are nowhere near as easy to see.
@@TheFinerPoints Well, family comes first, so don't feel pressured to do it :)
The Finer Points I’d like to know and see some more on night IR training, I heard it’s much harder but could also greatly benefit a student in IR training! Would love to hear your thoughts in some type of video(:
Is that your voiceover I hear on various ForeFlight training videos?
Whoa Nelly yes. Back in the day ...
The Finer Points ah, I thought so. Neat.
Take your cat with you. If your cat is on the ceiling...it means your inverted. (Jk)
But you could remain level and still climbing. Why not use the VSI? and altitude indicator
Alvir Francisco For sure use them just don’t “fly” on them. You’ll end up chasing. Understand the power of the attitude indicator
@@TheFinerPoints that's what I'm saying.
Alvir Francisco Yes but use caution, 90% of the pilots I fly with chase the needles. Hardly anybody uses he attitude indicator like the window
Try this next flight:
- trim your speed, once on speed don’t touch it.
- light control on yoke
- add power if alt not holding, power out if climbing.
Once your bird is stable and level, make a few turns. You will lose vertical lift with the application of bank. If you increase back pressure on yoke expect your speed to decrease but you can maintain altitude. If you instead add a little power, you can keep alt and speed in the turn. Play with it.
I don’t know what he is talking about! 😳👀
His balls are small and dropping! 😜😜😜😜🤣🤣🤣. Good video, and helpful!
Why don't you pilots stick pendulums on your dash boards to aid in ifr? Your mind would know the pendulum has to be correct right?
joeskis no. An airplane in flight usually produces a load force to the floor. In some cases you could roll all the way upside down and never spill a drip of coffee.
Scott Perdue on his FlyWire channel has a video demonstrating what Jason wrote using a tennis ball on a string in the cockpit.
I don't like that way your videos are being shortened only to drive people to Patreon, I mean you have already been paid for the work you did during the lesson but to double or actually triple dip on a video just does not seem right. Wehn i say triple dip you get paid by the student, paid by you tube views and Patreon for the one video. I love you teaching and was very instrumental in helping me obtain my PPL, but why are so many Aviation guys doing this? now on facebook making a teaser video of 1 min and posting it seems like a waste of peoples time which actually give a 4th revenue stream off one video.
It's all about the BENJAMINS
