My only concern is that lowering the barrier to entry on high performance bikes by adding DCT will enable those who literally do not know how to ride a motorcycle to start rolling down the road faster. Having to learn a clutch is a barrier that I think filters out the most low-effort would-be squids who will never get an endorsement

I have a '21 africa twin DCT and my list of dont likes is far shorter than the list of likes. The main problem with the DCT is you can't disengage the engine from the driveline once it hooks up. That makes low speed maneuvers a bit of a lurch fest. You can't feather the clutch or just plain pull it in and coast to a stop, etc. I think that's the only thing I don't like about it. Everything else is a plus over a manual in my experience....

I own a DCT africa twin from 2020 , about the engine braking situation, one thing, there is a option to increase or decrease the engine braking and probably you have the less braking engine option, that is why you have the user 1 or user 2, you can select how much power, engine brake, wheelie control on the menu to suit your own taste.

I'm 71 and only got back into riding 3 years ago. I love the DCT on my Rebel 1100 with the African Twin engine. The bike is light, easy to handle, and in city traffic, the DCT is great. On the highway, cruising at the speed limit with cruise control for long rides is also a huge plus. Although I am only 5'7" I found I had to put on control extenders to stretch out a bit. I also have added a Puig windscreen which works really well at highway speeds. For additional comfort, I added an Airhawk inflatable cushion to the seat. To make a long story short, for senior riders like me, the DCT turns the bike into an "old man's scooter":-)

I love the convenience of my 2019 Honda NC750X DCT. On twisty mountain roads I take over the decision making and shift with the pushbuttons so I get engine braking before corners instead of unwanted downshifts in the middle of corners. Sport 3 comes pretty close to what I want in the mountains though.
In city traffic I’ll punch the downshift button for engine braking or positioning in traffic but mostly let the machine save energy with its early shifting in drive mode. I get about 75 mpg (US gallons) that way.
Have taken one long tour and will do more. I would definitely get another DCT bike if it was the right one but I also ride a Harley Dyna Lowrider so I’m not adverse to shifting and don’t absolutely require the convenience. Just nice to have.

The only scenario I have no idea about the DCT’s application is on aggressive dirt riding, no clutch to slip in those certain situations. As well it does add weight which on a gravel road ok but not desirable on single track. The DCT is the future for most applications no doubt- unless you are set in your ways and want a manual transmission- clutch

For daily commuting it also makes a lot of sense. Say you want to ride to work but like me you work long hours and are on your feet the entire time. Dct means you can ride it kind of like a scooter mainly using your hands. As you really don’t need the rear brake if you are taking it easy.

When I rode a DCT Honda for a couple days, I stayed mostly in manual mode, and loved it. It's great eliminating several semi-complex physical actions needed every few seconds (depending on where and how you're riding, of course), and made riding considerably more fun. Now, I'm not saying I would want DCT on EVERY bike I own, not at all; but as a technology, I really like it, and I'm really looking forward to Handa's new 'E'-Clutch. Kudos to Honda for daring to try something new..! Also, it's worth remembering, when DCT transmissions first showed up in cars, everybody said 'oh, it's just something for really hi-performance sports cars, a really specialized set-up, certainly not beyond that, it's practically Formula 1 technology!' Now, of course, the vast majority of cars that are automatic use DCT's, and there's a LOT more automatics being sold than manuals. So I say, best not to be too quick to judge, one day not too long from now motorcycles might be using DCT's at the same proportion as cars right now..!

For my "fun" bike on the road, I'd opt for a traditional manual, but for commuting to work in stop and go traffic I would LOVE a DCT. That NC750X is amazing for that. I actually enjoyed the DCT in the twisties, I didn't have to worry about what gear, shifting in a turn, feathering the clutch... it was weird to get used to though, but ultimately this removes a big barrier of entry into motorcycling for some. And if it's not for you, that's fine, at least we got options! The only thing I hate about DCT is it causes all these gatekeeping types to come out and say it's not a real bike, or you're not a real motorcyclist if you don't learn how to shift, or shifting is the real experience, blah blah blah. I say we need the innovation to keep motorcycling relevant and attract new riders, or our kind will get fewer and fewer. More options is just better for everyone, so don't hate on anyone who likes something different. Props to Honda for continuing to provide innovation and options to us! Great video Spite.

Maybe the Goldwing is programmed differently but my Sport mode is aggressive and very responsive. It holds gears both up and down to give you max acceleration and good engine braking. Tour Mode of course relaxes that a bit. I think if you had time to tune the User Modes more on the press bike you were riding, you would be amazed at how competent the system is. I'm 66 years old and have been riding since I was 14 so of course all my previous bikes have been manual transmissions. People I know who have this bike ride I automatic, I don’t. I like to control the revs with manual mode and know when I’m changing gears, especially when I’m off road going up and down hill on the thing. Even automatic sport mode…. I don’t bother.
I’m just wheely happy to finally be riding again! 😁
    Great bike all round!
My only problem’ish with DCT is the extra weight. About 25kg I believe. But there’s a solution to that, hit the gym and it feels a lot lighter 😂
At the end of the day, whatever way shape or form, always keep riding! 😉👍🏻

This video is a good example of a relatively big influencer with absolutely no idea what he is talking about and how this can influence the audience with false information. Engine brake is what you can adjust, if you happen to know what you are doing and read the manual for example or just pay attention during the explanation.

I've come from a 2022 and 2023 Goldwing DCT tours and while DCT is clever and takes the work outta the job it also takes some fun out of it too. I recently bought a 2024 Africa Twin Adventure sport with a manual gearbox and the fun is back in motorcycling. More to do, more to focus on but also more engagment and more fun. I ride bikes for fun. Not because I need to get somewhere or to work. If you want fun go with a manual if you want a utilitarian manchine go with the DCT. Hondas DCT is very good and reliable.

I'm riding a Honda NT1100 DCT. With regards to downshifting when riding twisties. I find you have to help the engine by changing down with the paddle shifter. That then gives plenty of engine braking.

I’m not sure you’re in the right mode because if you were there’s absolutely no way a manual can even come close to keeping up with the DCT. Watch some drag race videos and you’ll see. The Goldwing DCT runs off and leaves the manual in a drag race with both in sport mode! It’s like you didn’t even research the bike before getting on it. Engine braking is adjustable.

I have a previous generation DCT on a Honda CTX - love it! My curiosity was piqued by the Rebel 1100 with DCT, but that bike was not a good fit for me ergonomically. The CTX, on the other hand, fits me like it was made for me... after a few mods (Corbin seat, installed floorboards). I've been riding for 57 years, owned a bunch of bikes over those years. I have no issue with a clutch, but I find the DCT to be interesting technology that rides pretty much the way I prefer (in Sport Mode), with the occasional use of the paddle shifters to put the bike in the gear I want at the time. Seems that some people use the DCT as an "automatic transmission" and are disappointed with the performance... DUH. Or, they say, "The bike doesn't downshift when I want before a curve"... again: DUH. You still have to think and anticipate. After several years with the CTX, I don't see another manual transmission bike in my future. Yes, it is *that* good. The more time you spend with the DCT, the more you appreciate how it works, especially when pushing the bike through the twisties. Thanks for the review on the Africa Twin.

It has been mentioned in the comments already, but ride modes are more important with a DCT than they are with a manual. A lot of his complaints are based off presets and likely incorrect settings for what he's asking. I have a Rebel 1100 DCT and its a completely different bike depending on the settings. I use custom mode 2/3/3/1 for daily commuting and it's an easy-going cruiser with plenty of power for highway passing but not so snappy that's hard to ride very slowly in parking lots or heavy traffic (also gets 50mpg at this setting). Now change that to "Sport Mode" or 3/1/2/3 and the bike turns into a snappy (somewhat heavy) naked bike that is constantly trying to stay in the high-rev range. The two settings are so different that the bike doesn't even sound like the same bike between them...
He spoke of it not engine braking when it wanted it to. This can be adjusted by changing the third setting or "EB" and the fourth setting or "D". Something like 3/1/3/3 would keep the RPM up and increase the engine braking to its most aggressive. There is no stock setting like this, you would need to use the custom setting.

I think if you had a DCT for a year of riding you would find more benefits and shifting style changes, it is a whole new style of riding so it's unfamiliar as a regular clutch is to a new rider. Over time you would maximize the benefits of it and might be surprised at how much better it actually might be.

I have the european cousin of the AT, the NT1100 in DCT. Originally ordered a manual but Honda isn't producing enough manuals and the wait list was going to be over a year. Ended up getting a DCT model instead. It took a while for the gearbox to learn especially considering we have a lot of twists and turns here and it was always in too high of a gear. Eventually it learnt to hold gears now. I Still need to give it the odd manual downshift to override it but I don't mind it. In all, I really like it and it makes touring much easier, letting you focus on the unknown roads ahead rather than whether you're in the right gear or not. No surprise hill is going to cause you to stall or tip over.

I had a Honda Talon UTV for a while, which utilizes the AT DTC trans / motor. HATED it. But, admittedly that might have been more related to the suspension being really stiff, and the traditional cable operated throttle. bouncing around on the trail caused the buggy to be real choppy, jerky, and gross. DCT searching for gears in automatic mode made it miserable. Can find used DCT ATs in my area EVERYWHERE. Was pretty telling IMO. Glad you did the ride Spite! I still think the base '16-19 AT w/ a built suspension would be a hard bike to beat--even today, but my Vstrom 800de is good'nuff! Go ride a Vstrom and tell me what you think Spite!

I have 70,000 km on my 2020 AT DCT. Always ride in Sport3. To engage Sport Mode just tap Transmission Switch once you are in D.
The DCT shifts on que in Sport mode. In Drive mode it is a dog and upshifts at too low rpm… feels like you are lugging.
You can easily program features like Engine Brake, Traction Control, Wheelie Control to suit your rider preferences..
Also you can override up shift AND downshifts by using the Paddle Shifters.
You suggested you prefer a Quick Shifter… well you can “Quickshift” anytime with the paddles… no need to “blip” the Throttle.
May I suggest read the Owners Manual before you offer a review

I'm pretty sure you can make it as hard or as soft as you'd want on the fly, and the DCT also has standard D + 3 sport levels of adjustment. I test rode one recently and its cool, but its not for me. Think of dct as an electrically shifted manual. There is an electric motor mounted to the left side of the engine. The same basic setup used on modern 4x4 transfer cases. I rarely use the manual mode, but can always downshift when I feel the need. No more throttle blipping and clutch feathering on takeoff from a traffic light. While others are engaging their clutches i am leaving the other side of the intersection. Best part is excellent fuel economy in the D setting.

I rode AT with DCT and did have the same problem with it. As I was going to a turn, it would regularly be in too high of a gear and low RPM. Now if this happened with a manual, I'd put a lower gear before the turn or ride the clutch a bit until I start accelerating from the turn. DCT does not do either, instead option to put lower gear when you're already leaning, upsetting the bike and also changing the power of the engine due to different RPMs. Even in S2 it was not exactly eager to downshift, especially to 1st.
Now maybe I shouldn't have taken it to a really technical road (

I have a Rebel 1100 DCT. One thing I don't like about it is how jerky the throttle can be at low speeds. It's either closed, or trying to haul ass. Is the Africa Twin kinda the same? Wondering if it's a DCT thing, or just their tuning of the engine.
Also, for the DCT being a thing in general, I think it's great for people who can't/don't want to have to manually shift. I've seen a few people get the Rebel 1100 because they have injuries or disabilities that would stop them from being able to easily ride a traditional bike. It's good to have as an option for people who want it.
The E-Clutch is definitely gonna be interesting. I wanna test ride a bike that has it.
I'm currently selling my bike so that I can get a manual bike and get that engagement from manually shifting again.

I have a Rebel 1100 DCT. My commute to work has a couple of slow speed tight turns (practically, U-turns). The DCT sometimes shifts mid turn and it's very unsettling. Honda should have a steering angle sensor on the frame's steering stem to prevent up-shifting after a certain angle (not lean angle) and less than a certain speed. i.e. >±30°@

0:45 Personally, I'd describe a DCT as more like a manual transmission that's being operated by a computer. The computer operates the clutch, the shift switch on the handlebar sends a signal to that computer which them does the actual shifting...possibly even shifts according to its own internal algorithm if there's a fully "automatic" mode. But internally, it still has meshed gears sets and a clutch, not a torque converter and epicyclic gears like a traditional automatic trans.

I think they should have programmable modes where for example custom sport mode where you can choose at what rpms it shifts up, same for all other modes
That's the only way your bike would really feel like your bike imo.
an adjustable delay should be there too, less delay if you want 'less control', more delay before auto shift kicks in if you wanna maybe manually shift up

DCT’s in car speak is usually a love then or hate them experience. Unless they have been dialled in to also suit low speed conditions. In general, they provide the best experience when being pushed as the gear changes tend to be crisper than say a benchmarked automatic transmission like the ZF 8 speed used by several manufacturers around the globe. The DCT does make more sense on two wheels and Honda have finally got it just about perfect.

DCT and manual require two different riding styles/inputs to make the bikes react the same way. One can not learn to make a DCT react like a manual in an hour or a day while on a test ride for the first time. I have no trouble with trail or engine braking twistys on my 2018 AT AS DCT. Embrace the difference, it's what makes having a manual and a DCT transmission in the garage a blast.
