Covent Garden was originally Convent Garden, an area set aside for the monks at the nearby Abbey of St. Peter (now Westminster Abbey) to grow fruit and vegetables.
Throughout the centuries it has had multiple incarnations: a public fruit and vegetable market; a residential area for affluent 16th century Londoners; a red-light district; a flower market; and the home of London’s West End theatre district.
Today, Covent Garden is dominated by a beautiful piazza, designed by architect Charles Fowler in the 1830s.
Within this piazza are a myriad of shops, restaurants, and a pitch for opera singers and musicians.
Surrounding the piazza are the iconic cobbled streets of Covent Garden, home to markets, museums, theatres, street performers, restaurants, bars, and shopping.
Covent Garden is right in the heart of London’s West End, meaning this location has more theatres than any other part of the city, as well as playing host to London’s Covent Garden Opera House.
Neal's Yard is a small and beautiful enclave of independent shops and eateries just off of Seven Dials.

I just found you on RUclips. I've visited London twice and I love it there. I'm in sunny California ... but my heart belongs in London! You folks know how to speak English much better than us Americans. Love the HISTORY and the Royal Family and when I hear bag pipes I weep they are so beautiful. I will watch your tours. Your voice is refreshing. You're clear and concise. Your narration is lovely! I applaud your work!!! Thank you!!!!

I will be in London in 2023. I have been to Covent Garden before, I loved it. I did not go down the side streets though! For sure I will next year!! So I really enjoyed this vlog to see all the hidden gems.

SONIA ~ I was in London, (my first time ever), in 2015, fetching our daughter ... whom was studying, in London, for her Junior Year of an American College. I absolutely wanted to stay there - forever! I hope for you, (truly!!!), that our weird covid world is over, by the time you're booked, to go. Please whisper my name, (Lee Ann), anywhere in the London air. My daughter, and I, stayed at *The Kensington*, for two weeks afore we flew back to The States ... a wonderful hotel, if ya need a reference! God bless you, and very good luck🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧
Your very advanced, you go London tour in 2023 but now a year still 2022.may be you wrong typewriter on. Thank you. (Idah jason wife).
Hampton court is beautiful
Sinead is great. Right where she choose to end the video there is a sign that reads; "diversion ends" . To which I giggled as I used the series as a diversion.
Hopefully this diversion never ends :).
For me, Neals Yards always make me think of Diagon Alley. Hidden, colourful and full of life. I am so glad you're showing us. Looking for returning to London.
You are so welcome! And if you are into Potter, we have a video for you. ruclips.net/video/yzNkXM0sPoY/видео.html

Probably the second best of the London tour guide channels, love your tours and narration, but you still can't whack Jules
Watching from my home in Sydney, Australia.
I was a young 20 something Aussie girl on the proverbial working holiday to the UK and Europe in very early 1972 for almost three years.
I worked at the #Strand Palace Hotel and lived in the staff apartments that backed onto the original Covent Garden markets at that time.
Our apartment faced onto the markets and we would see a the trucks rolling in at 4 or 5am with their produce.
We got to know so.e of the wholesalers, especially one flower wholesaler.
I can recognise many of the buildings that don't seem to have changed much.
Sadly our staff apartments have been demolished I am told.
Hoping to revisit the UK in 2023 and Covent Garden will be on top of my list to see.
Thanks from Australia.
Loving your tours Sinead. Did you know that it was Hilda Ogden a character from the TV soap Coronation Street who called a mural she had on her wall a "muriel." It makes me giggle every time I hear people referring to murals as muriels, and reminds me of her, one of our greatest actors and national treasures. Just a little bit of information for you there :-)
I heard someone in Rosamond Street had a Muriel...😀
Thank you for the virtual tour around London, especially Neal's Yard & the street art of Lady Diana by Bambi. The Lyceum Theater has an amazing history.
In addition to all the many events you mentioned, it was also the location where the first reading of Bram Stoker's Dracula was staged in 1897.
Stoker was the business manager at the theater, which was owned at the time by Sir Henry Irving and he arranged the reading to protect his stage rights to the material. The reading took four hours and it was reported that, when asked what he thought, Sir Henry's reply was "Dreadful" which probably upset Stoker, since he envisioned Irving playing the lead.
Thank you for sharing this extra info!

Can’t believe you didn’t mention Watkins Bookshop! The oldest esoteric shop in the world… you walked right past it. Many very famous and historical characters frequented Watkins throughout the ages…

I noticed that the opening shot is of Lipman & Sons formal suite hire and sales. Their shop in fleet st is the wonderful original Tudor building and the son is hilarious and had wedding party in stitches with laughter whilst trying on formal morning suits . He'd be a hoot to visit plus its a spectacular historical building!

thanks for a very interesting tour, although I used to live in London I never walked around Neal's Yard and the other areas. I only used to go to Dobells' record shop in Charing Crosss roac, where you could buy all types of jazz music on LP's been second-hand ones. I read somewhere that Dobell's shop had closed down and I had bought some great jazz LP records there.

Yeah, you are the only one who mentioned Cecil Court as Diagon Alley. I love this little street and have bought books here. Love your tours. Been to England 52 times but haven't been in a long while and love seeing places I've walked. So far, I haven't found an error in your history as I have with other tour guides and they get mad when I correct them or add a bit more of the history that they've missed out on. Best to you, Jane, Philadelphia (PS Haven't seen the Philadelphia tour yet but will soon.)

Just to clarify: You note that there are six dials on the Seven Dials monument, then add that there used to be seven connecting streets. In actuality there are currently seven connecting street, though at one time apparently there were only six. A minor slip but it prompted me to confirm my own understanding and remind you.
Thank you for the walk 'round this area. Yes, it is tremendous...though often much too busy.
Thanks for the info!
Covent Garden is where Brisget Jones is filmed and you see a train going past in one of the movies
Nice Vedio

I remember making the mistake with my last trip to London. Those Covent Garden underground stairs are brutal. My knees hurt thinking about it 😂
Haha - It's a mistake you never make twice!
Fantastic Sinead. How come I didn't know about this one?
Delighted you enjoyed it
great video as usual... Have you thought of doing a London Most Haunted tour? London is rich in haunted places...
The restaurants, outdoor shops, and street performers is all very similar to the New Orleans French Quarter, just classier and with more & better history (without the pan handlers)... London seems very much a quite good combination of the historical and contemporary.
We won't tell our team for our New Orleans channel about that, but you are right.
It is interesting that so many of the streets do not have vehicular traffic. I wonder how repairmen and suppliers get to all the businesses. There must be alleys that allow vehicles. Also---I wonder where the employees and residents park their cars. This is another great tour. Thank you.
Funny how you can love a place you've never been... and I'm talking about for as long as I can just about remember anything. ' first heard the live version of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" on his breakthrough album Natty Dread, 45 years ago; nice to see the Lyceum... where the vibration began

One random thing I just noticed is that the cars that are parallel parked at the curb are not all facing in the same direction (i.e., the direction of traffic flow). Most were alternating. Interesting.
