Sorry to hear about your Brother, Terrence, Julian please accept my sincerest condolences to yourself and your family and thank you for another fantastic & informative guide.
Loved this video. Between 1969 and 1971, Soho was my patch. I rented a tiny little basement photo studio in Gerrard Street, opposite the Tailor & Cutter magazine. To contribute a couple of personal musical reminiscences I once saw John Lennon and Yoko Ono leaving Lee Ho Fook's, in Macclesfield Street. I made De Hems, the Dutch pub which was just opposite, my local, and there one afternoon had the honour of buying a couple of pints for Eric Burdon (of the Animals). To shamelessly take this name dropping to the limit, I should also mention that I also photographed Mary Quant, the inventor of the mini-skirt. Ah, the swinging sixties...
Excellent stuff Rob. I used to work at Keith Johnsons on Great Marlborough Street in the mid-eighties. Walking down Wardour Street in my lunch hour one day, I literally bumped into Phil Collins as he stepped out of a doorway on to the street. I nearly bowled him over!
Stumbled on this great channel quite by chance. Not sure why he doesn't have a 1m+ subscribers - the content is just what visitors and residents of London need, once you've done the Eye, Madam Tussaud's, History Museum and all that shit.
I’m a HUGE David Bowie fan but I had no ideia these things were in London. I’m staying here for a short while and thanks to your video I was able to get a little “Bowie tour”. Thank you so much!!!
Totally addictive videos. Love the information. I lived in Britain for 35 years, danced in London where Dean Street was for ballet shoes and auditions, and there is so much I am learning from this video.
@Joolz Guides ... So very sorry to hear about your Brother Terence. I am sure He would have appreciated this lovely tribute Joolz ... much peace to you and your Brother.
One of your best Joolz. It brought back many memories of my teens. So sorry to hear about your brother. Perhaps in his memory.......... A Julian and family lived here dedication? Rest in peace Terence.
8:50 The Intrepid fox was were Rod Stewart first met Ronnie Wood. Apparently Rod had a black eye at the time and Ronnie said "Hello face" to which replied "Hello face". Low and behold a few years later they were in the Faces together.
I'm sorry for your loss, Jules. It was thanks to this video that I found out that we had to go to the end of the street to find the famous telephone kiosk. I just wanted to thank you, you made my visit to London very special.
I love you, Joolz! You make me so happy when I watch your videos. ☺️ Bless you and your family, and I am sure your dear brother's spirit is feeling the love you always convey. ❤️ Thank you for all you do and all that you share. 💗
I've forgotten how great a city London is but your videos are reminding me again. In 1997 I stayed a week near the British Museum and would walk to and fro from Soho and Soho Square every day. It felt like the center of the world at that time. Have been to the city 3 times (from Canada) and am vowing to go back in the not too distant future.
Sabiro....I live in Japan, have done for 20 years,,,Yes that is true...My wife, a Japanese lady couldnt believe it,,,but is is true. As an aside,,,,,love these videos!! It really does save me from going back to the UK!! The Mrs can see London,,,,without going there!! Thank you young fella,,,,Just so good!
It was the second door, I was a cloak room boy there when it was known as Gossips which was still mostly a goth and rock club a good 15yrs ago. I never knew the whole time I was there that it was formally known as the Bat Cave but there was a small area out the back that was referred to as the Batcave.
I saw *The Damned* at *The Marque* probably around *1978/79* thinking at the time I was lightweight & had missed the boat! Mate of mine also played there in a band with Zep's occasional drummer *Jason Bonham!*
Great video as always. London has so much history, I am a Scot living in Madrid and these videos really inspire me to create better, useful content. If you're ever in Spain I'd love to show you the inside scoop. Also I'm sorry to hear about your brother, I too have lost a sibling and wouldn't wish it on anyone. All you can do is live the best life you can while keeping the memory of him alive.
RIP Terence. May God put him in eternal heaven. This video is a gem. Thanks for the musical history for the Soho area. Never knew it is so rich in music. I have subscribed to your channel recently and loving it. I owe you a pint. Regards
You are quite right; a suit in Japanese is indeed called 'se-bi-ro'. Great video BTW...I'm a Bowie fan so it was super interesting discovering new things about him 👍
So sorry for the loss of your brother! May he Rest in Peace! Loved this episode. Interesting listening to the lyrics of the song.. it's Jolene's answer back to Dolly! xx
Regarding the 2IIsnext door was the heaven and hell coffee bar That was where the mods hung out back in 1962 i went in both and as a young rocker had no problems at all
Marc Bolan (Mark Feld) hung out at the 21"s while his mum worked on a stall in the Brewick street markets and Bolan used Trident studios for most of Tyrannosaurus Rex and Electric Warrior as T.REX. Bolan and Bowie (David Jones) first met in the Soho offices of their manager Leslie Conn as recently dramatised on Sky arts.
Absolutely love you videos. I'm from Scotland, but come to London a couple times a year. Very informative and humerous . Would love to catch you up on your tours one day.
Thank you for having such a high opinion of us, your viewers/fans that you would share with us the loss of your brother. I am truly humbled and offer my most sincere condolences to you and your family. This is actually one of my favourite videos, thank you for sharing it. Sincerely, Jon
And to think that I was walking around the streets of Soho oblivious to the musical history around me but I did see the building in Saville Row where the Beatles played they last gig 👍👍👍
at the back of what was/is Andys guitarshop in Denmark st, a 16th century barn was discovered and converted into a very small but perfectly formed music venue called "the twelve bar", very trendy, it became quite the thing to do a gig there in the late eighties' ? I don't know if it still exists.
Soho is my favourite part of London, great bars and venues, amazing music shops to browse, and some lovely food. I love also that one the list of Crap Band Names, Fields of the Nephilim are mentioned and considered a crapper name than Spandex Nappyrash.
Brilliant. When I first moved to the wilds of Dagenham in 1989 o spent many free days travelling by tube around the capital visiting Dingwalls, Marque, Cart and Horses in Canning Town, etc. Thanks for memories. Hello from Toronto Canada
I was at the Peace and love festival in Sweden, in the hotel bar with Hanoi Rocks, getting pissed a reminiscing about Denmark Street and Soho in the 80s. That was a great night.
Dear Joolz, you forgot to walk and mention the then great Cat Stevens down Shaftesbury ave, past the theathers, where he then lived, growing up and singing, buying his guitars in this video shown shops. Great times they were, went often to his dads restaurant Stavros, nice memories.....great video's.....
Stopped in this channel by accident and right after the second video i suscribed. What amazing videos and best of all what an amazing way to explain every place. I lived as an exchange student in london and i wished i could of seen this videos before, oh well just another reason to go back.
FUN FACT: I bought an amplifier on Denmark St in a shop owned by Rod Argent...and still have it 45 years later....The Shop is Still there and Warrants a Mention!
A bit late but you didn't say anything about the Flamingo club in 33 - 37 wardour street open between 1952 and 1969 it played an important role in the British rhythm and blues and modern jazz it opened it's doors at midnight and shut at six in the morning, the Who played there along with Ska musicians and of course one of my favourite musicians Zoot Money Happy days
Sincerest Condolences, Joolzie. I Love You, Big Guy! God bless you and your family. Another Wonderful vid. All The Best...These videos are like a cool breeze on a hot day...Soooo Welcome...Thanks again, my dear friend.
Great tour, but missing one important stop: “The Famous Charisma Label”, the record label for Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Monty Python etc until the mid-1980’s when Virgin Records acquired the label. Charisma Records was located in the Soho area (from 1972 at 70 Old Compton Street, and from 1977 at 90 Wardour Street) and I was fortunate to visit their offices in 1980.
Denmark St was the Tin Pan Alley of England. Used to hang out in a coffee bar called La gia conda. David Bowie hung out there too while he was trying to make it. Happy days. Thank you for posting this.
A blue plaque was unvalled in 2014 in tin pan alley London. Donovan was there and sang a song he had composed for the occasion of the same name. He performed outside the same Giaconda Cafe that you speak of, where David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and many others famous musicians used to go.
Brilliant. I find myself enjoying Joolz Guides videos all the more since lockdown began in March last year. Initially it was 'to tide me over until we're back to normal again'. Increasingly starting to fear they are relics from a lost golden age.
I'm Taiwanese and I've been learning Japanese for a few years. We also say 'sebiro' for suit in Taiwanese dialect. We borrowed it from the Japanese when they colonized Taiwan from 1895-1945. But I didn't know the origin of that word until now. Thank you for sharing! What a lovely video, as always!
Thanks for all your wonderful videos. I worked in London in 1997 at the Big Breakfast Show as a security guard with Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan. Miss London terribly. Hopefully I'll visit again soon. Regards from South Africa.
The Flamingo club was at the Chinatown end of Wardour Street No 33-37. Later became The WAG, now occupied by O'Neill's. The live music venue on the top floor of O'Neills, is actually called "The Flamingo Bar" today.

Great walk around Soho, although it missed the old poet's haunt The Society Club, that was established in 1927 on Ingestre Place, combined vintage book shop during the day and late night cocktail club at night; and wow those cocktails were as tasty as they were powerful. Sadly rising rents closed the place down.
12:04 The lovely green-with-white-trim building used to be Richard Williams Animation Studio. Amongst (many) other things, this is where the animation for the title sequences of the 'Pink Panther' movies and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was done.

Rest in Paradise Terrence. I too lost someone dear last Saturday. Always they live within our hearts.
Lost my brother some years ago. RIP to yours Julian.
Denmark Steet in the 70s and 80s was amazing. I miss those days. Chris and Dicky in Rose Morris a right pair of characters.
Thank you for making me feel like I’m London when I’m not in London.
So sorry for your loss! I'm sure Terence is in heaven playing rock n' roll with the big guys.
I think you're right!
What I wouldn't give for a time machine so I could visit these places back in the 60's when music history was being made.
I agree. It’s all so sterile and lonely now. Probably why most modern music is shite lol
Every Friday night I open a bottle of Vino and watch Joolsz Guide.. I love the history and banter..thanks Joolz!
Deeply sorry about your loss. Sending much love and prayers.💙🙏🏻 God bless you now and always.
Totally addictive videos. Love the information. I lived in Britain for 35 years, danced in London where Dean Street was for ballet shoes and auditions, and there is so much I am learning from this video.
I remember once playing In a punk band in 1981 supporting Chelsea (Gene October) in Meard Street but it was then known as Gossips

Cool walk through Soho. Having wished to visit England all my life, this is a great tour of so many wonderful musical memories.

Absolutely love you videos. I'm from Scotland, but come to London a couple times a year.
Very informative and humerous .
Would love to catch you up on your tours one day.
Thanks for this very enjoyable tour! Music does indeed rule!
My old man used to work at Ronnie's. He let Hendrix in on that night.
Wow! That's amazing.

I pause your videos multiple times to look up the music. Takes me an hour to go through a 20 minute Joolz Guides video .
Forbidden Planet started as a book store in Denmark Street.
The gig I went at was at The Marquee. The Doctors of Madness.
London has it all.
Spandex Nappyrash , I LOVE IT !
Que buen paseo, cuanta historia musical en Londres . La proxima vez que viaje hare este recorrido . Saludos desde Argentina !!!
The second door was the Batcave. It was the first club I went to on my first night London when I lived in London in 1984.
I spent many an hour walking the streets of soho looking for obscure Albums in the 60s-70s love Soho.
Darling ! We love you from Austin Texas !!! Cheers, dear !Love,Claudia

Joolz you brighten up my day - thank you!

Wow, wish I had a Tardis: would head straight back to Soho in the early 70's and would probably stay there for good. Fantastic video.
Thanks for all your wonderful videos. I worked in London in 1997 at the Big Breakfast Show as a security guard with Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan. Miss London terribly. Hopefully I'll visit again soon. Regards from South Africa.
Thanks. yes, I tried to do work experience on that show.. Always felt I would be good on TV...Not sure why no one in TV land agrees!
@@Joolzguides I'm sure they'll get around.
Great nights at the Intrepid Fox and the club nights at the Bat Cave locale. This video is bringing back so many great memories.
I'm truly sorry for your family's loss although your sister is a gem and you are a rock! keep up the great stuff!
thanks patrick. Hanging in there
I can go back even further. Before the Marquee it was called The Flamingo Club...."Jazz at the Flamingo". Keep up the good work!
The Flamingo club was at the Chinatown end of Wardour Street No 33-37. Later became The WAG, now occupied by O'Neill's. The live music venue on the top floor of O'Neills, is actually called "The Flamingo Bar" today.
Thanks Julian!!! Another great and stunning video. Sorry for the loss of your brother.
He's up there strumming his guitar somewhere
The story about Elton John playing on the Tom Jones demo was brilliant..... So stop saying "not that you care". Some of us do care quite about history because history is not in the text books....... Great job
.
My uncle used to live in a flat in Old Compton Street, above where La Pastaia is. His flat mate gave birth to her daughter in there, quite unexpectedly!
when i worked in Beak St , I always visited that coffee house :-)
Hey Joolz...., Been watching your RUclips videos via my vpn here on China. You've helped me understand so much more about London and I'll be visiting soon and will definitely follow your advice. Many thanks. 😊
Your video logs are outstanding. I’m so glad I stumbled across them recently!
This video, as well as others in this channel, is a gem!
Funnily enough the entrance to Gossips / Batcave / Blitz club was the door that the guy you asked about it went through. Many a great night there!
12:04 The lovely green-with-white-trim building used to be Richard Williams Animation Studio. Amongst (many) other things, this is where the animation for the title sequences of the 'Pink Panther' movies and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was done.
I think this might be your best video. Tremendous stuff.
Amazing you make so many people want to follow you around on that tour! I for one would be like a giddy child in a candy store walking around there!
Another brilliant film Joolzs, enjoyed it immensly. Sorry to hear about your brother Terence, sad times.
Indeed.. Thanks
my condolences on your loss julian
This is what you expect from a typical English bloke. Cheesy, quick witted humour. Love it
Love your videos! And I love London.
