  • Shampoos are intended to clean the hair and scalp. In order to sell more shampoos, manufacturers will use same ingredients in different product lines, but label as its own unique product, featuring different ingredients on the front label.
    Here, I break down six Shea Moisture shampoos, listing the "active" ingredients and why it's in the product's formula.
    The six Shea Moisture Shampoos analyzed in this video
    0:00 - Intro
    5:37 - Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Shampoo
    10:20 - Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo
    12:09 - Argan Oil & Almond Milk Smooth & Tame Shampoo
    14:38 - Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo
    18:07 - African Water Mint & Ginger Detox & Refresh Gentle Shampoo
    21:33 - Yucca & Plantain Anti-Breakage Strengthening Shampoo
    23:27 - How to fix split ends and breaking hair
    26:32 - Conclusion
    Terms defined
    Surfactant - is a fancy word for detergent. Common ingredient in shampoos to clean the hair and scalp. Varies in degrees of strength from mild to harsh. Decyl Glucoside is a surfactant, commonly used in shampoos and is considered a mild detergent. Decyl Glucoside tends to be the common surfactant in the shampoos above. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate and Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate are mild surfactants.
    Emulsifiers are ingredients that keeps mainly oil and water from separating in a product's formula. Emulsifiers are Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate,
    Emollients are oily or buttery substances that have multi-function jobs. An emollient ingredient coats the hair strands and helps add shine, excellent slip/lubrication (comb-ability, reduced friction and breakage)
    Glycol Distearate is an emollient and co-emulsifier that helps to thicken the product's formula, plus provide the desired consistency of the product's formula.
    Humectants - are ingredients, such as Glycerin, Panthenol and Aloe Vera that aid in pulling moisture from the climate and allowing it to be absorbed into the hair strands. In a shampoo, Glycerin IS NOT NEEDED because Glycerin is water soluble, meaning it washed away, when you rinse your hair. According to Cosmetic Scientist, GLYCERIN is added to a shampoo for MARKETING REASONS to lure a customer to buy the product. Glycerin has little to no functional value in a SHAMPOO.
    Water soluble means an ingredient can be dissolved in water.
    How to read an INGREDIENTS' LABEL
    Ingredients are listed on the back in concentration of highest to lowest. 1st ingredient is usually water takes up to 50% to 80% concentration, followed by the 2nd ingredient, usually a surfactant, taking up to 3% to 5%, followed by the next two to three ingredients combined taking up to 5%, with the remaining 10-15 ingredients having 1% or less concentration and not required to be in any specific order. Certain ingredients perform certain functions and so the concentration of each ingredient may differ and not reflect it's importance., such as preservatives having 1% concentration, but important in preventing bacteria and mold growth.
    Ingredients are broken down into 3 categories
    1. Active - the main ingredients are within the first 3 ingredients, because they make up 80% - 90% of the product's formulation
    2. Base ingredients are within the first 5 ingredients, which help with creating the product's consistency and texture, such as the emulsifiers, emollients, thickeners and silicones
    3. Aesthetic ingredients are the next 10 - 20 ingredients (excluding the preservatives) that include the ingredients featured on the front label, but will not be supported by the INGREDIENTS' LABEL as having a function in how the product works. These are marketing claims with no merit.

    This was very informative as I am trying to make a more informed decision on selecting a shampoo for my high porosity hair since my pH is off. I do read labels (mostly for noteworthy ingredients) but I do not break them down like you did in order to understand why it was formulated and what it will do for my porous hair. I usually get confused over the marketing labels because they are vague enough to entice anyone with curly to coily hair because we all suffer from dry hair. I appreciate the work you put into this!

      Hi Rae: I'm so glad it helped. I'm telling you, and anyone else, who wants to listen, the majority of these hair products, regardless of the manufacture, the core ingredients used to perform the function of the product are usually the same. Overall, all these shampoos are gentle shampoos that are not intended to strip the hair completely, like a clarifying shampoo. Don't waste your money on a shampoo. Just make sure you have a shampoo, that is not too harsh (if you are looking to do a regular shampoo), because you want the shampoo to clean, then focus on the following steps of conditioning the hair. Don't be fooled with these "featured" ingredients and claims on the front label, because most of the time they don't contribute to the function of the product. If you like a certain smell of product, then buy it b/c you like it, but not b/c the smell will make the product work better. Stay tuned, I will be posting a video on a couple of deep conditioners that I have and the first 7 ingredients are the same, but with different front labels. 🤔

      Yes, please do. You don't really need to spend big money on several different shampoos. If you are buying a "manufactured" shampoo, then realize all these shampoos are made in big huge bulks with the formulas being created by cosmetic scientist that pretty much use the same formula with a tweak here and there.

      I'm sorry! Yes, really look at the first 5 ingredients of a hair product and compare to each other to see if there really is a difference. You will save a lot of money. Besides, a shampoo is meant to CLEAN your hair and not MOISTURIZE. Don't rely on a shampoo to offer the MOISTURE your hair needs. The conditioners are what provides the MOISTURE. Thanks for watching my video. 😊

      And the mafura oil and manuka honey line. Fragrance was 9th on the list and now its 4th! To make it worse, they aren't even using an essential oil blend anymore, its just "parfum." Also, it used to be "African rock fig," not just "fig extract." Look it up.
      I'm so done with shea moisture! This and jbco were the last 2 lines i cared for and they changed the ingredients basically making it filler. I might as well buy creme of nature, hell its cheaper for the same quality at this point anyway.

    I feel like shea moisture products make my hair feel brittle i tired the hibiscus one. I also have low porosity and 4c hair. Imma give it another try. It was a long time ago. I tried the gel and that made my hair very sticky. The hibiscus gel.

    • @ZalinaW
      @ZalinaW  6 месяцев назад

      It may not be the product itself that makes your hair brittle, but how you apply products to your hair. With a conditioner, you may want to consider using heat to lift your hair's cuticle layers, so conditioner can access the middle layer, the cortex, to really moisturize. What I've read about low porosity hair, it's really tough to "moisturize" b/c of closed cuticle layers. I admire low porosity hair, it's much stronger and can withstand manipulation better.
      I notice most of the popular natural hair vloggers on RUclips with LONG hair state they have low porosity hair.
      I don't use gels, they are very drying product. Gels aren't meant to moisturize, but meant to use for styling purposes. Gels coat the hair strands to make stiffer and hold a style longer. If you look at the first two ingredients after water, they are not conditioning agents. They block the hair strands from getting moisturized, acting like an armor.

    We use a cheap shampoo (clarifying shampoo)once a week… We spend our money on deep conditioner/mask and a mid tier leave in.. and a good gel or curl cream.
    I hate that most natural hair products have coconut in it.. and my daughter has low porosity coconut sensitive hair. So we have to really read labels and know what we’re buying. I’ve wasted so much money in the past buying products with coconut that wasn’t stated on the front.

    • @ZalinaW
      @ZalinaW  6 месяцев назад

      Yes, I agree. Most ingredients in hair products are derived from coconuts, i.e., fatty alcohols. I wish I had low porosity hair because it's a much stronger hair type. It can endure manipulation much better, maintaining length retention.

    • @AngelChristinaaa
      @AngelChristinaaa 6 месяцев назад

      @@ZalinaW Yes she had very healthy hair and it grows
      She has 3c ish hair…
      We struggle with the frizz. No matter what we use or how much… Obviously with low porosity if we use heavier products they just sit on top the hair. After 24-48 the hair looks oily and like it hasn’t been washed… but coconut in particular left her hair brittle and extremely dry. It was breaking off. For the longest I couldn’t figure out what it was… Stopped using the products and her hair went back to normal. Used some other products and it happened all over again.. These products didn’t say coconut on the front but had it in the ingredients list.
      So we have to be very careful.

    I’ve been using bad products for 23 years and nun of them seemed to help with my thinning hair. Some of them make your hair feel like you washed it with soap.

    • @ZalinaW
      @ZalinaW  Год назад +2

      Be aware shampoo is not intended to "help" with "thinning" hair. Shampoo has one function, to clean your hair. It's the products you use after you shampoo your hair that can temporarily help with making your hair appear "thicker". Your conditioners and leave-in conditioners coats your hair strands to help with "thickening" the hair.
      Remember don't read the front label on a product to see what it does instead read the ingredient's label on the back.
