Tresor: A Story of Survival

- As the Berlin institution turns 32, a new short documentary contends with its past, present and future.
Tresor, one of Berlin's oldest and consistently popular techno institutions, celebrates 32 years in 2023. Part history, part meditation on the club's future, this new short film explores the wider implications for Berlin’s cultural landscape, as founder Dimitri Hegemann, like many others in the city, feels the pressures of rising gentrification and a precarious lease contract.
With Berlin's real-estate market continuing to boil over, the current situation has inspired Hegemann to set up the Tresor Foundation, which aims to protect the presence of cultural and creative spaces in the centre of cities, preserving community access to these vital resources. Tresor: A Story of Survival was directed by Josiah McGarvie and produced by Emma Tracey, with support from the club commission.

In 1998 I traveled from the US to Berlin just to go to Tresor. Out of pure luck, Joey Beltram was playing that night, and I will never forget it. Long live Tresor!!!
I was there (::) then from A'dam.
was beltram playing indoors or outdoors that night?
The closest I have come to seeing Joey Beltram in an environment like Tresor, was at a party in this abandoned warehouse on Eastern Ave In Toronto. (For the company everything that could go wrong, went wrong {authorities didn’t come to shut it down though} ) Joey Beltram came, and all the chaotic things about that party for attendees went away. If Joey Beltram is there and shows up, a good time will be had.
You jammy git. I bet that was incredible.
you lucky boy 🎶
Listening to Surgeon' tracks in the background while watching is a pure bliss.
I visited Tresor again this weekend after first attending 10 years ago. It is still a special place no matter what people say. Berlin has changed a lot but the spirit of techno is very much alive.
Had one of the best nights of my life at Tresor. It was like experiencing the purest techno scene in Berlin, raw concrete walls, metal bars, cold, slightly lightning, just the music doing its magic. Long live to this wonderful place! Thank you Dimitri!❤
Ditto. I got back to the UK and just couldn’t explain it to friends. Still can’t. Been raving for decades and it is still, hands-down, one of the best nights of my life.
I never went to tresor, but had a fantastic night once in berhhain. One of them places that even if you didn't care for techno, you would totally understand the music in that setting. Things just synergies and make sense.
@@chesterwigame for me. I was lucky enough to enter Berghain four times. As a firm techno fan those four Klubnachts were life changing. Techno at its purest form, best sound system of the world, high ceilings, and pure freedom between those walls. The energy in there can be found nowhere else.
wow sounds like heaven 🎡
To hear Born Slippy on the closing night would have been an out of this world experience.
I thought the same thing. I would've cried
@@aryakafashi6443 i teared up watching this when Born Slippy played
25 Years of House and Techno in my life, of which I have lived the past 14 years in Berlin now. Although I prefer Berghain since day 1, I can sure as hell say, that Tresor is the more authentic and genuine techno club. A big reason for that is its door policy. It is less exclusive, more inclusive (just as techno historically is meant to be), so it grants participation to everyone. The system and the sensual overkill is top notch.
Dimitri slapping a Tresor sticker on the old building really hit me.
My favourite club of all time. Lots of great memories in there. The music, the drugs, my beautiful woman all coming together in the same place. Something always magical happens. Back there in 12 days to get it on again. 51 years young and clubbing for 34 years now.
legend!!
When did you take drugs last time in the club, bro?:)
Yes billy!
Born Slippy was the last song played at the old Tresor? Oh god.. just goosebumps
no, it was part of the last set by steve d, who played this in the last hour or two. the very last track (actually announced by regina baer - r.i.p.) was "schlangenfarm" by 3phase, because it was actually produced down in that basement where 3phase had his studio in the early days of the club (to quote regina: "it was horrible.").
Kraftwerk is probably my favorite space in the whole city, wish it were open more! Tresor, Globus, and Ohm are all very important for the scene in their own ways. I know it is different now from what it was, and despite the growth in popularity and tourism Tresor still brings amazing artists, and is one of very few large established venues that emphasizes introducing new artists (faces) to the scene. I was at an underground event going b2b with a random guy I met that night because we liked each other's taste. The next week I went and saw him playing his first Tresor gig. And he killed it! That wouldn't be possible if they were only booking established superstar world-famous djs.
Would you mind sharing the bloke's name?
I was there 1995-2001. I will always admire Dimitri Hegmann that he was there at the right time and had the guts to start it. And wow, it was so great. And he must be sad looking at what is there now - baby is gone 😢 TRESOR
had the opportunity to DJ with Alan at Kraftwerk last spring. It was my first time Djin in Berlin and I never felt such a vibe and energy ever. Immediately fell in love with the city and nightlife scene. Shout to Alan and people of making this space stay alive.
Dimitri is a real boss, all love and respect for this man.
I've been visiting Tresor for 22 years now. Even during the closed phase I tried to visit the Tresor parties in the Maria. At least that was a downer. I try to go to Tresor every 3 months and I'm always excited to experience a great party and meet new nice people. All I have to say: I love Tresor 😍
❤
🖤
I am here in Berlin today from the US to visit this institution. This is history, not just for Berlin but for the global dance music culture. The German government needs to realize the value of tourism dollars spent within the country for destinations like this and it must be proserved with love. We don't get this in the US on this level. Look through the eyes of those that love this culture and music and realize this is worth fighting for.
Its not only tourist dollars, the majority of the tourists are not even American…
@@aw7x 💯 Just sharing my perspective.
@@bazrin Yeah sorry if i sounded harsh since english is not my main language but I meant that most of the visitors are not from the US…
Crurent trésor is lame tbh
Nothing like it or even close out America. And this is why I trek to Amsterdam for music events. And love every minute there.
I went to tresor first time the other night and am from Australia ,, was a great night ,, no phones cameras , great music (( real techno ))
Was a joy to go to a club that I had bought vinyl records of the same back in the 90s
This city and tthe techno world owes so much to Tresor. A real treasure for all of us. Long live Tresor
I see what you did there 🙂

I learned about tresor in 2009 thanks to RUclips. I love techno music. hello from the southern Urals!
You can't replicate the magical moments that stem from such special periods in history that lead to a rare kind of unity, creativity and exhilaration. And for it to happen on a dance floor is all the more beautiful.
Best club I’ve ever been too. Twice and each time it was unbelievable, nowhere like it. Got to witness Mike Huckaby play there ❤️
ooft! amazing
i love that he put the sticker there lol
For me these were the old Basic Channel / Jeff Mills days. The basement was insane, fully packed the collective sweat would condense on the ceiling and drip down. Great days.
I was lucky enough to experience Tresor just once in ‘93 (my first time in Berlin) and it was very raw (I saw a rat running for cover). I even had a look at the Tresor hotel (3 rooms only - just for DJ’s) - Happy Days!
My first trip to Tresor was for DJ T-1000. That memory will remain engrained in my mind forever. It was the best night of my life. Nothing comes close. The energy this club fills each and every person that enters it can never be forgotten. I wish I was older and could have experienced the original location, but nonetheless, it remains the best club in the world. Hands down. Anybody who’s never been and loves techno it should be number one on your list. It’s an unforgettable experience and is life changing. Long live Tresor.🖤
Last year we travelled from Switzerland to Berlin with 2 friends, we had the chance to go at Tresor and it was our best party best night really good memories ! The spirit inside and the real freedom was insane. Love Tresor and love Berlin, we'll go back soon sure
long life to Tresor! 🖤
My first visit to the club was 1997 during Love Parade. Great memories🙏
When I was in Berlin in ’92/’93 I hit Tresor (plus a few other clubs, most of which no longer exist) many times. Even 30 years later I’m still a techno fan, in moderation 🙂
FYI: it is presented as if the new tresor is in the large rooms that dimitri raves about. however, the club is in the basement and is not half as large.
The building is the Kraftwerk which houses: Tresor, Globus, OHM, the big hall, the roof top bar... all managed by the Tresor Foundation
But you are right, it's only the very basement that is technically Tresor
the club itself is a scaled up version of the old one and in the interest of preserving the magic, not a bad idea to leave it out of the documentary
@@pooramateurvideo absolutely!
Hope your efforts and words are seen and heard by the right people. A society without culture is just "random people". I keep fingers crossed 🤞 🌻
I went to Tresor in August 2002, it had a crystal ball on the ground level and break beat music playing. Tbh I thought the music upstairs was a bit tame, not into breaks. Me and my friend then went down stairs, down the stone steps with stone walls until a metal gate appearing which was clouded in dry ice, then boom, literally boom boom boom from the techno music. There was some crazy Japanese dancing in there and it was a mind blowing club experience. After it finished we sat outside chatting to some local Germans who were in there at 6am.
I was just recently able to go to Berlin for the first time and had an unforgettable night at Tresor. Amazing, long live Tresor and Art.
Tresor has had a profound impact on me and I absolutely love the club! Tresor in my heart for ever!
Such a great documentary! You can truly sense the significance the original Tresor held for the people. Sadly, I wasn't even born during that era, but watching it allowed me to envision what it could be like back then.
I only went there once after Loveparade 1999, it is one of my favorite memories to this day ❤
Tresor should be protected same way as Berghain. It is culturally significant place, more significant than Berghain. It is already a sin that they demolished original Tresor, better not to make same mistake twice.
When I went to Tresor in 2016 & 2019 hearing Janina & Refracted changed who I am as a person in every which way. This place is a great representative & institution of not only techno, but as electronic music as a whole . The devotion to the art knows no limits within these walls. Long Live, Tresor. Long live the music.
Clubs Like Omen, Tresor, Legoa Menen are legends in bringing great DJ Legends
We were there from the opening of the Original Tresor the wall had fallen the City had a New found freedom Respect to the Originals of Berlin that were there from the birth of the Basement - The British Lads of Berlin 89 - 92 🤜®️🤛
the old tresor was a unique space. and even though many many years have passed i still feel it's a blessing to have played there a few times.
I can't even understand why they would close again this new location. It's so great, I went there in 2018, it was pure bliss. Among the greatest clubs I have been in. I hope it will remain.
I was at the old Tresor for a Love Parade 2002 after party, it consumed you in the most intense way. The sound, the air, the energy, a frontal assault on all senses… I will never forget it… Long live the old Tresor…
And there now stands the Mall of Berlin. The most tragic shopping mall in existence. Trying to make Berlin just like every other city will be it's biggest downfall. It doesn't fit into the mould of anywhere else because it's the opposite of everywhere else. Dimitri for Mayor! The city needs him.
I traveled to Berlin from the US and stumbled upon this amazing place. It was an experience that cannot be said but must be felt. A weekend I will never forget.
Distant paradise is one of those tracks that makes my heart smile 70% but the other 30% I feel loneliness. Beautiful track and awesome vid. Dimitri, thank u.
Berlin forever needs Tresor
And today’s German teenagers (a sizable part anyway) do not know just how big of a deal Tresor and Berlin are to Germany. I mentioned this German exchange student my wife and I were hosting, and I told her a lot of my acquaintances who produced Techno/Tech house (Jeff Milligan, Adam Marshall, Jamie Kidd to name a few)went to Germany, her response was “Did they have a gun pointed to their heads?” I said no they left out of free will, they wanted to be there” she was like “Why?” I wanted to cry.
Best club in the world !! Have been there a couple of times, you can feel the history throught its music , real experience
Unfortunately the same thing happened in Amsterdam. All the amazing creative spaces with art and clubs in them were sold to soulless money people who squandered and erased the magical energy they had, and killed that essential part of the culture by pushing their empty consumerism in the form of posh apartments, ‘health clubs’, and all the other Instagram bull of this age. These spaces and areas are essential cultural heritage and need to be seen and protected accordingly by municipalities.
The cycle of life.
I was 15 almost 16, had not much knowledge about techno yet. Visiting back in the winter after just having moved from 10 years growing up in Berlin. Sht was amazing
Great little piece on history. Never been. But it's one of those clubs that is a bucket list.
Sogeil,danke für den Beitrag!!
This doc reminded me of Curlies and Shiva Valley in Goa being razed earlier this year. Devastatingly sad and infuriating.
It’s clearly a case of People not knowing what they have, until it’s gone, sadly I don’t think the Modhi government can look passed its nose to realize this (Goa is apart of India after all) 🤦♂️
Only ever been once but it was a great night - awesome place
This was such an awesome time from the fall of the wall to the new beginnings and during the time it just seemed like it would be around forever and then gentrification came and cloning and the spirit spread and got muted. Maybe i just go old. Today my daughter goes to the abandoned places and caves and the parties pop up instantly so something lives on….
Tresor changed my life
Makes me feel very nostalgic. I was at The Shamen concert there in 1993. Would love to hear from anyone else who was at that concert. Richard.
Eternal love
Wir lieben Tresor. Wir alle lieben es!
Tresor never sleeps ❤
Techno Hans Zimmer speaks so eloquently
Tresor Sound war schon immer einzigartig und der einzig echte hörbare Techno.
Get the old crowdfunding up and running. Offer packages, dine/an audience with/meet and greet with Dimitri Hegemann, sponsored fans wall, competitions, what ever it takes to build up the capital to keep the Tresor ethos going strong.

Been making electronic music for 25 years. Numerous vinyl releases and live pa performed. One of my goals is to play Berlin. One day…

That CURVE T-shirt, tho, much love
Kraftwerk is a modern Cathederal for electronic music and should absolutely be protected at all costs. Here in UK, we have recently lost the mighty Printworks to similar malevolant market forces. Berlin Atonal in 2013 had such a positively profound effect on my life, the cavernous space, unprecedented sound, unified elation.
In UK, there is the "Asset of Community Value" legislation (I think), that gives local residents some power to protect local spaces. Forgive my ignorance, but is there a similar mechanism in DE that you're aware of?
I went there in 2015, the way the bass bounces on your neck is like no other place...
