    Hopefully we're not that guy, but probably we all a guy that has surfed like l a novice for years. Or even decades. They're having a good time so it's all good.
    But focussing on one aspect of surfing and working on it is very helpful.
    This can work for more skill surfers that are in slumps or flat spot in their surfing.

      Well said. If you’re having fun , who really cares about anything else. But if having fun means improving, than focusing on specific things is huge

    Your issue is pretty obvious… You don’t fade your bottom turn enough. You’re too focused on getting down the line and not staying in the pocket. You want to be setting up your waves behind the peak so when the wave starts to stand up, you walk forward and you’re right in the curl of the wave. Try fading your bottom turn more or doing left-go-rights.

    Love your work and your nose riding journey. Amazing production and I love how your taking the journeyman approach.
    The best 3 tips I ever received when cross stepping..
    .1/point your belly button down the stringer'.. this squares your hips to the stringer and makes it easier to cross step in a solid balanced position
    .2/When cross stepping your front foot is straight along the stringer and your back foot is 90 degrees to the stringer....The T position...this makes the feet pass smoothly...make sure ankles and knees are soft and flexed
    3/Your trailing closest to the wave face arm should be like your holding a coffee cup and try not to spill it booth front and backside.....this squares your shoulders and helps with belly button down the stringer position
    Give them a try and see how your go....

    Another good video! Your surfing has really progressed over the years I have been watching. Well done! One observation - I was watching Ben Considine and when he moves to the front of the board his hips look like they aligned forward like he just walking. I have read that aligning the hips forward rather than sideways stance is ideal and gives you more control rather than a sideways stance. I have been playing with this and it definitely does. When I do this, I feel so much more in control and weighting my lead foot a little helps me maneuver up and down the board (still shuffling forward rather than cross stepping 😀). Thanks for the video. Cheers

      @LongboardSessions  2 года назад

      Thanks Jack! Yes exactly right about the hips being forward. It's actually something I'm struggling with while noseriding... after seeing this footage iv'e noticed i'm so sideways well noseriding. I gotta make sure I keep them open through the whole process

      There are light weight high performance long boards designed to be surfed from the tail similar to a short board. You can nose ride on these but it's difficult.
      A nose rider is usually 9' or longer, fairly heavy, has a big center fin (single fin or 2+1) parallel rails, not much rocker, and softer 50/50 style rails (rather than hard or sharp tucked under rails)
      You don't need a big board collection, but a board designed to nose ride is good to have around. Also having an extra old long board is handy if a buddy drops by and you want to surf together.

      A heavy back foot could be a hold over from short boarding. On most short boards you plant your back foot on the sweet spot over the fins and drive n pivot from there. Only time you need to shift weight forward is to bring off the tops n reentries back down the face.
      This is about the opposite of how you need to ride a long board

    In one of your earlier videos, you recommended working on when popping up, consciously shift weight backward towards the tail / throw your upper body towards the tail. Does that still hold? Is what you're doing in this video only about during a ride?

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 года назад +1

      Yes that still stands for sure, but in the very beginning of the pop up techinically your weight is forward and than you push back on the tail to turn. However, theres all sorts of different pop ups... sometimes you need to turn immiedatley and that's when you would pop up already back on your board.

    Very, very interesting! I've noticed from my fledgling cross stepping efforts that its seems to go a lot better when a rail is locked into a face of the wave. I also look at the better cross steppers in the places where I surf and the good ones always seem to first 'set' themselves before they take the first step. But I haven't quite been able to figure out exactly what this 'setting' process involves. When I heard you says you 'focusing on keeping your weight forward', that seems to simply describe exactly what they are doing. Can't wait to give it a try.
    Thanks again for the great tip and please keep them coming. Cheers from Japan!

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 года назад +1

      Oh yes exactly Ken! Focusing on "setting" that front foot and getting the weight on it is exactly what the pros seem to be doing before the start the cross step. Give it a shot!

    • @michaelburk9171
      @michaelburk9171 2 года назад

      The farther from the fin you get the more you rely on the rail, or "setting the rail', to hold your line. (finless boards trim from the rails pretty well)
      On a couple waves in this video he was able to reset his line by moving weight rail to rail. This lets you control the board with out having to cross step back to tail and do a turn.
      If you set a very high line you can track up the face and go over the falls.
      But if you're super skilled you can let the board track so high that the fin loses its hold. Then it's just the rail holding your course. A fast but slight weight reduction on the inside rail will make the board side slip back down the face until the fin re-engages.
      If you watch old surf films like the original Endless Summer you'll see guys do this.

    hey there, just stumbled upon your channel, good stuff. do you have a video on logs vs all-rounders vs performance longboards (or thereabouts) ? i'm coming from 17 years of shortboarding and not sure what route to take. any input appreciated!

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 года назад

      I don't have a video on that, but this could help. If you want to noseride, go for a traditional noserider... something like the bing silver spoon. If you intend to bring the longboard out on bigger days and want to focus on turning, go for a high performance longboard.

    • @billytuchscher
      @billytuchscher 2 года назад

      @Vzn Quest, coming from shortnoarding I would recommend a "performance longboard". You'll enjoy the fun of carving turns, triming down the line and maneuvering back into the pocket. -- these are useful skills for the longer heavier "nose riding log" if you choose to get one of these later.

    • @vznquest
      @vznquest 2 года назад

      @@billytuchscher thx for the insight. But would it not be worthy of going for the log in order to get the nose riding / log experience, in contrast to my short board experience which is all about turning?

    • @billytuchscher
      @billytuchscher 2 года назад

      @@vznquestI think your comment is exactly what I would have said in your shoes. I also come from a short board background, as does @Longboard Sesions (he might want to chime in here too). My thinking is you'll have success faster if you build a foundation of skills. You can't properly noseride unlit you can maneuver a 9.5" board into the critical section. Trimmng a log out onto the shoulder won't get you there. -- You can achieve the goal either way. But mastering the fundementale of faded takeoffs and some "S" turns into the pocket is where you start.

    • @billytuchscher
      @billytuchscher 2 года назад

      @@vznquest also, if you want to look at a few boards that will do both turn on a dime and nose ride... I'm currently into my Skin Dog "cherry picker" model. And I also like the Kai Salas "Waikiki" both are Thunderbolt technology by firewire (thus lite, strong, and just the right flex).
