It is so refreshing to see the young man, Dan, Miranda's boyfriend, stick with her all the way through..... God bless you, kiddo, the world needs more men like you. Congrats to Miranda for all the Moxy to pull through. She couldn't even breath on her own at one point. All praise to God for putting the right people in her life at the right time.

I'm too a GBS survivor! Unfortunately, I was dx'd with CIDP (chronic inflammatory demylanating polyneuropathy- the evil sinister sibling of GBS that causes progressive destruction of the mylan sheath of all nerves in the body and brain and have evidence of it in my brain 😡🤬😡😤) in November 2016-> about ½ a month after my first round of having GBS (as a result of getting my flu shot in 2014.
Luckily I'm on maintenance dosing of IVIG and independently infuse once a month via my port along with running liters of saline depending upon how my dysautonomia symptoms are (typically 3 liters a month although some months I only need one but others I need 6 (dx'd with dysautonomia in 2012 after contracting MERS- a coronavirus similar to the current SARS-COV2 that started in 2019 but hit the fan in the year the world turned to shit aka 2020).

Thanks for sharing your journey with GBS, Miranda. Your victories reminded me of my 8 month hospitalization with the same disease, 30 years ago. I was stuck in a wheelchair for 2 years and didn’t quit until I was walking on my own. After I graduated to a cane, I began chiropractic studies and became a doctor. I lost my only sister of GBS when she was just 26 way back in 1982. Those days there was no cure for GBS. After showing the symptoms, she died within 24 hours! Doctors diagnosed but could not save her. It affected her respiratory cells in the brain, which caused two cardiac arrest one after another. This is her story from India. 38 long years have gone since then... Miss her very much...

Yes, thank you Shantra, for what you do. My PT's were wonderful and I appreciate them a lot, but my OT's treated more than just my physical issues. They have been so dear....encouraging me, you folks are so creative to problem-solve difficulties I've had, such a can-do attitude, I've had some real complex issues but you always figured out SOMETHING to do for it !........not only during the rehab from my paralysis (2014), but also after my spinal reconstruction surgery last year - rodding and fusions from T-3 to the ilium - and then repeat rodding 9 mo.s later due to one of the rods breaking. I just recall how my OT's have listened and been compassionate, made me laugh, and cheered me on. My hand OT after GBS had her work cut out as they were the last to recover and still limited. Thanks again for making O.T your career- it's really more a calling. I was an RN for > 30 yr.s and know how draining the work can be, but worth every minute of it.

My Dad had GBS in 1963 when he was 38 years old and I was just 13. He was hospitalized for many months. That was before ventilators and he was in an iron lung. I'll never forget the day they told me to say my goodbye to him as he would probably not make it through the night. He proved them wrong. It brought tears to see Miranda fight her way back and reminded me of the way my Dad made that same fight so many years earlier. He went on to live a long and joyful life to the age of 83. --- Would love to see an update to this video and I hope Miranda is still doing great today.

Thank you and all the many others affected by Guillain Barre and sharing their inspiring stories and recoveries. My daughter Makaylah age 16 around 2011-12 after coming home from the doctors office for her asthma and flu like symptoms just received a flu shot in an instant, me and my families world would be forever changed. It was a Saturday morning and Kaylah was getting ready to go to a karate tournament and she fell in the washer room complaining she couldn't move and then losing her vision. Thinking she was playing around, it suddenly became a situation where I rushed into action flopped her over my shoulder while she was scared and crying rushing her to the nearest emergency room 15 miles away. Paralyzed in my arms carrying her like a baby, kaylah was quickly rushed into the emergency room where the doctors came out hoping to have and explanation of her diagnosis, but they had a blank look on their faces because they had never came across any patient with these type of symptoms. So doctors quickly got her into an ambulance rushing her on a 45 minute drive from Stockton CA to Kaiser Roseville CA. Quickly we felt guilt looked at each other questioning "why us?" Watching your and many others videos is exactly what Kayla would overcome after about over a year at the hospital and INTENSE physical therapy. It was like she was a baby and had to relearn what she had lost in an instance. It is now 2017 and with the grace of God she has made a full recovery and she is back to her normal self attending college and working. Praise to you and your family in your recovery and all the others adversely effected by (GBS). Please note before you get any flu shot, they now make you sign a form detailing they will not be responsible for symptoms like (GBS).

...wait...maybe I misread this, but they gave your daughter a flu shot when she was already having symptoms of the flu???
I have asthma and I take the flu shot every year cause I have a high risk of getting pneumonia if I get the flu. But if I had a fever or if I was sick, they wouldn't give it to me cause I would be already immunocompromised. Sounds like you had a bad doctor.
Still, I'm sorry that happened to your daughter. That's horrible.

I get a flu shot every year because I have a weak immune system, and getting GBS seems like the worst thing ever. I am uplifted by the recovery of these young people, I however don't want to get that sick.

I hope your sis is still making good progress. I've never had GBS but I was seriously ill with sepsis and pneumonia back in late 2018 - early 2019 and nearly died three times. It was also suggested I be sent to the Intensive Care Unit as my vital organs were on the verge of shutting down. I refused to go there as I'd seen my bro-in-law down there just a couple of years beforehand and he was just hours away from dying and that image of him there is still firmly etched in my mind.

    wow!
I stumbled into this video while studying for a nursing exam (I was looking up Guillain-Barre) and I am so glad I did. Miranda, your story is an encouraging story of victory, and this video tells the story beautifully. Seeing you waterskiing and then going back to school for your sophomore year brought tears of joy to my eyes! God bless you, I am so in awe of your courage and your peace through such an ordeal. Keep telling this story!!!

Where in the hell did that horrible condition come from? Watching this was hard, and I don't even know her. I hate seeing people in wheelchairs, I hate knowing that there are people who have to relearn everything, because I can't imagine how much struggle and pain these people deal with daily. Being independent seems almost impossible with this one. I hope God continues to heal you on your road to recovery, and that this never happens to you again. You made me cry, girl. Good wishes to you for a great future being able to do what the rest of us take for granted. You got this. You can do it. And God is with you every step of the way. Here's to hoping good healing and a fun life are a part of your near future. You are a soldier for being this nasty disease. Guillain-Barre will not win if you remain strong.

Such a beautiful story. My son who is 35 is going thru this right now. He lost his insurance do to his job closing down. He came home from the hospital had 3 or 4 pt appts. Now without any way to pay he is just not getting better. I worry about him day and night. Not sure if he will walk again. His dad does everything for him. Gets him out of bed with a lift, bathes him, changes his depend, puts him in his wheelchair etc. I have heart failure and am on oxygen so I’m not able to be much help. I pray he will be able to walk again. Cecilia from Texas

I am so sorry. It is so sad that things are so expensive and there isn't something that the medical system will do to just cover the cost in a situation like that. I am wishing the best for your son, and you, your family. I hope your son makes a full recovery. I wish I had a lot of money and could pay for people in situations like this. I hope everything gets better and he gets better soon

This made me cry.. bless you, your amazing family and friends. My dad was admitted to emergency room a week ago and was fortunate enough for them to recognise it was GBS straight away. We had never even heard of GBS. Currently we are all so distraught, we can’t see him due to COVID as he is in the neurology unit. It’s so heart breaking. He is paralysed from neck down and all we can do is cry. Such a sad and shocking thing this GBS. I’m so happy you recovered Miranda, I wish you a very beautiful life, full of amazing things and great health. ❤️😘

Grit and gratitude gets one through GBS. Onset Oct 2018 at age 68. Lost 25 lbs of muscle mass in a week. So thankful to my medical community, had IGVF first day for 5 days and never had to go through any respiratory problems. Did not plateau until I went home and had a wonderful team of home health professionals. All of these people definitely do God's work. Thanks to them and my wonderful family and friends, I was able to stand for a minute in March of 2019. In June graduated to out patient therapy and haven't stopped since. God bless a strong family and dedicated care workers.

This had me in floods of tears . My grandmother had gbs. She unfortunately never walked again. I was only a young teen when she went through it she lost all feeling and experienced excruciating pains because of it. I started to care for her from just 14 and that was my meaning until she passed away. The care was hard but seeing her not give up was what kept me going. I'd give anything to see her beautiful face again. Stay strong and always keep that fight. Because you have more people fighting with you than you'll ever realise and your fighting will always give someone that feeling of pride to help such an amazing person

My sister (Mashelle) had GBS in 1999. She had pneumonia right before and then she had difficulty breathing on the day before Thanksgiving.. They rushed her to ER and the hospital staff were not able to determine what it was.She was intubated the first day in the hospital. She later was transferred to a hospital in SLC. They figured out that she had GBS and she was paralyzed for about 6 months. She was placed in rehab for several months where she had to learn to walk again. She fought to return to her former self. She required the use of braces for the rest of her life. My sister struggled with the residual effects of GBS following her rehab. My sister experienced depression and anxiety which worsened during her hospitalization for GBS. In 2017 the GBS symptoms slowly were returning. She was terrified that she would go through another paralysis. She told her boyfriend that she could not go through that again. On September 13, 2018 my sister ended her life at the age of 57. I miss my sister everyday! I watched your video of Miranda and was thankful for her recovery. Her journey brought tears to my eyes as I remember my sister. Thank you for sharing Miranda's journey.

I bet it felt so amazing to gain independence again, most of us won't ever quite appreciate how much as it is a journey one must travel to truly know just how amazing it is to be independent again after such a horrid illness. The pain is excruciating...I think only those who've had it can understand. The neurologists and intensivists in ICU were good to treat my neck pain but once I went to rehab. they really sucked at pain mgmt ! Santa Clara Valley Memorial in Callifornia was overall very good and I credit them with whatever function I got back, but one would think they would be better at treating pain ! I asked for hot packs and massage and they couldn't even seem to figure that out. But I am so grateful that I did not remain a quadriplegic, and today- 3 years later - I can walk with two sticks or a walker. A devastating syndrome which robs you of soooo much, and while I'm hugely grateful for the life I have TODAY, it only bears passing resemblance to the life I had before.Love and strength and the very best of luck to all who are dealing with this bizarre syndrome.

My Dad kad this in 1969,secondary to a broken back.He had no neuro deficit after the back fracture...but 3 days later, this viral infection was in his spinal fluid, and caused paralysis from his neck down. After it ran it's course, he had to re-learn all motor skills. After a very long time, when he came home,he struggled to walk with a walker.I was 7 years old,and we would squeeze Play- Dough and rubber balls together. We would arm wrestle, and for months I could beat him... but as his strength returned, eventually he started beating me.He would improve later to walk with a cane, then finally, without it. The rehab took around 2 years... but the GBS had left him with neuro deficit that was permanent, and he was declared 100% disabled and could not work.A very cruel disease.... My hat's off to this young lady, for never giving up!

A friend of ours got this disease in July 2023, aged 77.He was treated in a hospital in Bordeaux in France, eventually the treatment cured him. At the moment, three months on he is having physiotherapy sessions, his health is better. It is a long way to complete recovery. I'll share this video with him next time I see him which should be on Tuesday. He doesn't understand English but the video is clearly understandable without words. A message of hope.
