I just received the MODX 7 and LOVE IT!!! I did a ton of research and watched many video reviews including this one. I must say that any skepticism has been put to rest. This is my first Yamaha keyboard as I own the Korg Krome EX 73, Roland Juno DS 61and Kawai ES110. I am very very happy with the MODX and honesty feel it’s the best of the others I own. This synth is amazing and I’m looking forward to learning and exploring more of it’s capabilities. Yamaha really does a terrific job.
I just ordered mine this Black Friday. I hope I like it and didn’t make a mistake. I like the feeling of the weighted keys on the modx8. I never tried the modx7 and I bought it. I failed to read “semi weighted keys”. Does it feel nice to play?
@@christianluna6055 Honestly, I was really surprised how good the action was on the MODX7. For semi weighted keys, it feels really good. The action on the MODX7 is much better than on my Korg Krome EX 73. I wanted the MODX7 with the semi weighted keys so I could do faster synth runs but still have plenty of octaves. I already have the Kawai ES110 digital piano with weighted keys. Also, I am very happy with the piano sounds on the MODX. This board is incredible IMO. I think you will really like it. Take the time to learn it. Yamaha provides additional owner manuals on their website in addition to the one that dive deeper into the functions than the one that is included. I would also recommend getting the FC7 foot switch to control the superknob. It works amazing and enables you to use the superknob hands free while playing. If you decide after playing the semi weighted that you prefer the weighted keys, then I would suggest exchanging it for the MODX8. Enjoy and let us know how you like it.
Excellent review, really covered how you might want to use it as opposed to just running through the specs. Fantastic playing and choice of example songs as well, nice work!
Thank you (here 2 years later) for the amazing review Mr. Luke!! This vid along with much research and homework helped me decide to pull the trigger and purchase 12 hours ago! My first keyboard since a toy Casio in 1984. Big big bucks in my world but I know that it will be worth it!! Can’t wait to start creating. P.S. At 7:20 I paused to download the “Four to the Floor App” on my iPad, Hahaha 😳😳🤓😂 😂😂😂😂 Noob already feeling more accomplished now knowing 1 piece of pro terminology!!! Cheers!!!
Yes. Great to see a working pro do such a real real world kind of presentation. Everything he said made sense for a competant working musician. So many genuinely great techniques that were quite inspirational.
Thank you Luke! Great demo on the interface with audio input. I'm trying to convince my worship leader to sell the Nord Stage 3 which no one uses other than the organ and one piano sound. This is a perfect solution to key in with the Ableton Live we use or Drum mix to use some great arpeggiation features. More usable and flexible than the Nord, and less $$.
What is the name of this 80's song? I currently have it in my MOTIF XS as a pattern but couldn't complete it because I only layed what I remember of this song. I need thenname of this song, please...
I believe I am using this synth for marching band this year, and I'm pretty excited! It looks like it's a lot of fun to use, and while it isn't the Montage 8 (one of my dream synthesizers), it definitely looks like a more affordable version. And great demo, by the way! ^_^
Thanks for your review. Very nice sounds coming out of this keyboard. I was blown away by the sound you got for The way it is. You demo the entire keyboard very well. I think I will place it on my list quite high. Ps : nice Obris Morgan Explorer 😉
I have seen various demos of the MODX yet, even a few good ones, but this one is the best. Showing leasurely and casually demonstrating all the amazing stuff, aside from the sounds, this machine can do in a way that appeals to performing musicians. What a great instrument this really is. It also has got many things I'll never use, like the side chaining. And I've decided to cut out the LEDs from the super knob immediately in case I'll choose this one. Although the auto sync of delay, arp and seq to virtually anything is great. It also lacks things I'd like to have, like the audio recording facility on the Kross 2. So cannot make my mind up yet. Aside from that, this is a fantastic video. Thank you!
This is legit because everyone will not use everything in the Montage. It makes sense to chop it down to some compact functionalities that those people can use and not have them overpaying for it or opting out of having it. It still has the entire sound set?! If the MODX has aftertouch for it’s midi out, it’d probably be the top workstation (at its price point) to have in your production studio!
Thank you Romano. 🤟🏼 Only had it a few days beforehand and also one of my first times trying to do something for camera. 😁 Terrifying. Got a MODX6 in my collection at the moment though. 👌🏼👌🏼
The value is immediately obvious. I wanted the Montage, but no rhythm and the price, made it really hard to justify, although I almost bought a used 61 for 2k. Then saw this..I laughed out loud literally, and purchased it immediately. Unbelieveable power for that money.
I just checked the MODX out at GC. I played it side by side with a Montage. The action on the Montage feels much better than the MODX. I’d have to say that the action in the montage is just about the best I’ve ever experienced on any keyboard, so even though the MODX seems like a great value, I would enjoy playing the montage more.
I had just placed an order for this wonderful keyboard, not just because of the incredible sounds, but how light weight it is. The only thing I do not like about it along with the Yamaha Montage, no 9 harmonic drawbars.
Hey man. On some of the acoustic sounds you just play the note harder. I actually edit some of these to make the slide note quieter, so it's more subtle.
I just bought the Yamaha MODX8 and I really want to know how to use all the buttons...lol...it gets complicated. I know how to play the piano, but I need to know what the buttons do like the motion sequence, control assign, the scene buttons with the faders on top....basically all of them....but I just don't know who can explain it. Can you make a video of how to explain it plz??? Thank you
That blinking light is SO ANNOYING! Good to hear you can turn the blinking off, but when you do so, or when you dim it, will it still do everything it does when it's blinking?? Can someone please answer?
I'm wondering what people think of the feel of the keys. Do they have the right weight and sensitivity for someone looking to replicate a real piano feel?
I have a Yamaha MODX8! It sounds great but if I'm playing using some built in rithm patterns and want to change the the patches to get another sound without having to stop the rithm pattern it just stop the rithm so I just dont know how to have continuity of the rithm pattern while I want to switch to another sound!
Best thing to do here is prepare a sound that has the sounds you want, ready to go, and then use the scenes to seamlessly switch. Or the keyboard option on the screen (I'd use scenes). Do the drum sounds go if you choose them from the rhythm button?
Great demo, superb playing. The accoustic piano sounds the best on this video compared to other videos I've heard. Was there any special effects used or is it just Luke's superb playing that makes the piano sound so great.
i wish i could afford one of these beasts but for now i bought a yamaha p71 amazon exclusive for my first beginner piano =D maybe one day when i get better i can save up to upgrade to this
Please feel lucky, my budget only allowed me a used Yamaha P454 but it works and is a great learning tool. Be thankful my friend for what we have. God bless
All these video demos thus far have been your standard overview stuff. I can’t wait to get mine and program the shit out of it...straight up sound design and hard sequencing
I'm struggling with the piano and some motion synth sounds where it comes out too thin and soft as compared to when I switch from an organ patch for the MODX8. Any tips? Thanks !
Is there a...... Full Featured Sequencer? This time around, which was the Montage's biggest weakness and oversight, for those that do not want to be tied to a computer or ipad to make finished compositions with there $3000 keyboard. Breath control input?
It has a rudimentary sequencer, more like a recorder like the Roland Juno Gi, you will still need cubase for full edition and mastering. Korg Kronos is still the best choice in the sequencer side
I chose MOXF because modx doesn't have a full scale sequencer, according to my opinion, korg always have best inbuilt sequencer, nothing can best their sequencer abilities
More in tune... :) I do love the CS80. One of the greats if not the GOAT 🐐 The tuning issues of the old one can produce some of the most amazing sounds ever.. or it can be unplayable. So if I had a whole day to record I'd use the CS80 and love every second. If I wanted to play in a beautiful part and move on I'd use this every time. If it was a live gig and someone suggested we toured the 100kg CS I'd call him a cab and never speak to him again. 🙂

Hi. Maybe I missed it, but what is the green box on your right?? (with a blue cable) I hope it's NOT an iPad or something similar. I won't buy musical equipment that REQUIRES you to buy additional just to be able to use it to it's full potential.
Hi. You missed it, it’s a special box that is a REQUIRED additional. However, it’s NOT an iPad, but it is something similar. According to the user manual it’s part 82071. I think it retails for $120 (CAN)
Haha. I think Gordon is trying to wind you up. Or at least I hope he is. It was just my iPad. It's not needed. It was simply a way of sending some audio in to show what it can do should you want to play to a click, or other tempo provider via audio only. It also has an internal midi clock too. You can save to the iPad, but that's only if you wanna take your sounds to another MODX. You could also use a fancy computer or simple flash drive (a few quid on Amazon). Neither of these ship with the keyboard either though. It also has more memory internally than you'll ever need for all your sounds. 👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent demo Luke. Very straightforward and informative, one of the best that I have seen. However, one area that I haven't seen covered in any video so far is how does this keyboard interface in a MIDI/DAW setup. I currently have an original Motif in my studio to record MIDI with DP and Pro Tools using an array of VI's and external modules as sound sources. Would the MODX (or Montage) bring anything new to this configuration?
Thank you. Wasn't lucky enough to get a Motif. 😁 But I believe it wasn't standard to have a soundcard right? A firewire expansion possible?? Well this has its own soundcard built in. USB out for audio and midi. So a simple wire and you're into your DAW or Mainstage directly. No need for an external soundcard or midi interface. Pretty cool and so handy. I did work on the road in hotels just using the keyboard, a USB and my mac. This was also only the second ever time I'd been in front of camera in this way. Haha. I think the first time didn't even make the light of day due to being so terrible.... so thank you for your positive comments. 👍🏼👍🏼 It is one hell of a synth for the money! Loved both the 6 and 8 I had. Just had to give them back which was a sad day.
Hi I just buy a Yamaha modx 8. But no sounds. How I fix it ? Need speakers? Need Power amplifier? I mean can you make a video for teaching how to fix the modx8. Which brand size speaker and Connector and so on. I need some one help me
You can buy some monitors like the Yamaha HS8 and a set of phono leads. Its also got a headphone socket so plug in headphones if you have some. I know this post was eight months ago so anyone else reading this will know. Hope you got it sorted?
I'm interested in this but I'm concerned about how robust the keybed will be after a sustained period of piano use, ie buy a trained pianist. Any thoughts on that? Would I expect to find the keys making noise or losing their feel after a longer time?
They're probably going to use the same key bed as the MOXF series. When that graded hammer keybed came out Factory fresh, the new ones keys feel matte with a sturdy action while the daily drivers eventually glossen and feel more loosen to more of a BH action like the Motif series but they still feel great & even! don't take my word fully though I'm comparing multiple boards and Yamaha could have made two different variants of the key bed.
Joel McCray I have encountered the same problem with the MOXF the action is not as robust as the BH action on the Motif XS/XF Owned an XS 8 for about 8 years no problems while the MOXF I played occasionally ended up in the repair shop maybe it was the regular keyboard player punishing it I dont know

It is one hell of a synth for the money! Loved both the 6 and 8 I had. Just had to give them back which was a sad day.
Looking at p515, would this one lose the real piano style compared to the p515
Hi I just buy a Yamaha modx 8. But no sounds. How I fix it ? Need speakers? Need Power amplifier? I mean can you make a video for teaching how to fix the modx8. Which brand size speaker and Connector and so on. I need some one help me
You can buy some monitors like the Yamaha HS8 and a set of phono leads.
Its also got a headphone socket so plug in headphones if you have some.
I know this post was eight months ago so anyone else reading this will know.
Hope you got it sorted?
Sure I met you at SynthFest 2018 in Yamaha booth? 🤔 Showing me the MODX?
It feels better than the moxf8; looking at getting one. I have the moxf8 and as a pianist, I broke keys regularly, hence why I am looking to change.
Joel McCray I have encountered the same problem with the MOXF the action is not as robust as the BH action on the Motif XS/XF Owned an XS 8 for about 8 years no problems while the MOXF I played occasionally ended up in the repair shop maybe it was the regular keyboard player punishing it I dont know
If you had to choose between this keyboard and the Korg krome ex 88 which would you choose?
Hie does this synth only work when you using a DAW or it can work even without the need for a DAW
