This is fantastic! How many times have I tried to plant Kirsten, but all to no avail. Chestnut forests are dying in the Balkans, probably due to radiation, and I can't help them revive.
Where did you get your seed from. I'm in Ontario (zone 6a). I'm currently attempting to stratify some seeds from the grocery store that were imported from Italy. I'm guessing they are of the European variety. Did you ever find an answer to your question?
@@jimdent351 I actually got the seeds from the Metro grocery store too. The were Italian imports I have them in the fridge since early Nov 2023 and by jeepers now at the end of December they are actually growing tap roots. I will wait until probably the beginning of February and take them out and plant them indoors in starter containers. In the fall of 2024 I will plant them on a plot near Otter lake QC. You can buy trees at a business just North of Montreal but I was afraid they would fail and I be out a bunch of money. I once started Golden delicious Apple seeds from the store and now they are 3 feet high. Btw I soaked the Chestnuts for 2 days and got rid of the floating ones. Then I put them in moss from the forest and into a zipp lock bag . Make sure the whole thing is moist and keep it moist. Put in the fridge. Poke a few holes into the bag so gasses can escape. That's how I did it. Good luck man. If the trees will grow north of Montreal I figure they will do well in Otter lake. It is the same zone pretty much. I had 20 seeds in the fridge and a good bunch were sprouting. I didn't want to pull the whole thing apart. Cheers.

Were these seeds stratified? I just bought some seed today. 20 European Chestnuts. I live in Quebec and wonder how these trees will do in zone 4.

When it grows to a certain extent, it will need nutrients in the soil. Then give them water with basic essential nutrients.
