US Navy is more and more transferring from gun based CWIS towards the missile based Sea RAM as the last ditch defense systems for naval vessels.
Raytheon built Phalanx CWIS, although legendary and effective, is showing it's age. Especially compared to the latest Russian (Kashtan) and the incredible Chinese gatling gun type weapon systems.
CWIS fires up to 4500 20mm rounds per minute, while the latest Chinese beast fires 8000 rpm in a larger 30mm caliber..
So the Navy decided to double down on the incredible Sea RAM (Rolling airframe missile), that not only has a much longer range than the Phalanx, but is also much more precise.
P.S. Let's be honest here and not refer to Harpoon as a "considerable threat to any naval force"... Harpoon ASMs are obsolete in more than one way. They are short ranged (the latest variations hitting 170 miles while the older ones have 80 mile range), have a relatively small warhead compared to more modern ASMs (around 500 pound warhead), aren't stealthy at all, have ancient targeting systems and are damn slow...

Actually believe it or not the CWIS is being replaced with long range lasers that are capable of burning missiles and planes out of the sky. A few warships already have these lasers already equipped and discontinued the CWIS they were originally equipped with

Why don't they make a Sea AMRAAM? It is a much better missile than the Sea Sparrow ever was.

Because the Navy has the family of SM, Standard missiles and has ESSM, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles. This video is a bit dated. ESSM can be placed in VLS cells using a four missile pack per cell. Increasing the number of missiles a ship can carry.
Rolling Airframe system has been slowly replacing Phalanx on most new Naval ships. Just like the Naval Strike Missile will be the new surface-to-surface cruise missile for the Navy. Again, slowly replacing the Harpoon.

They did go the other way and now they shoot the SM-6 from F/A-18 E and F Super Hornets

@@TheBongReyes Did you see where the Patriot PAC-3 Missile has been modded for use in the MK-41 VLS system? The Navy says they can quad pack the PAC-3 as well.

So sad what is the point killing innocent people. I think they never learned anything from WWII.

You mean the communist don’t learn? Because that’s what these ships are made for to go against such regimes
