Didn't know they were any good to eat. When they're migrating, they fill the skies in Western Alaska (tundra). I believe they nest there somewhere but I remember flocks overhead in Kipnuk and Chefornak.

I’ve wanted to hunt and eat one for most of my life. My dad used to talk about hunting them when he was a kid and how good they were as an eating bird.

These guys look like they know what they’re doing but when we were in Saskatchewan goose hunting - the cranes would come in first, land among the goose decoys and the lay down blinds. They would walk around looking at us in the blinds from just feet away cocking their heads from side to side trying to figure out what was going on and why the goose decoys were not live. We figured they must be one of the stupidest birds ever. The locals called them gooney birds. The good thing is wonce the goonies came in you had live decoys on the ground, despite the hundreds of goose decoys, with the goonies on the ground the geese came right in without any hesitation!

I don't really care if you want to shoot Sandhill Cranes, but there are WHITE WHOOPING CRANES that are SUPER ENDANGERED, sandzHIGHLY PROTECTED !!! They some times migrate with the Sandhills, and usually have battery packs on their legs along with vivid I.D. TAGS also on their legs ! I'm just asking you to keep this in mind. I'm pretty sure there were less than 50 alive 5-6 years ago when I saw them in Neced ah, Wisconsin

As a kid, growing up in the Rockies, I would shoot towards Sandhill cranes way up high. They were probably at 10000/110000 ft and I would watch through that .22 scope and after a long time, see them flair as the bullet went by.
Irresponsible, but doggone it took a long time for that bullet to get that high.
Sorta felt guilty and only did it a few times but it was interesting.
