      Z4rrow hi there and welcome to the internet. There are a bunch of people that are going to have different opinions than you.
      Your comment added literally nothing to the conversation.
      Dude in the video made an argument to buy games straight from the manufacturer.
      I think $60 is too much to spend on a single game especially with them relying so heavily on DLC.
      Games didn't used to be this expensive. So yeah. I get my games either off Xbox Live when they go on sale, or I'll buy them second hand.
      It's my money, and my budget and I have other things to do with that money I'm saving by not giving my money to a multi million dollar company.
      Don't like my attitude?

    I have to disagree about used game sales. Used records, used cassettes, used VHS and used CDs have all been available for a long time. They never helped the "developers" or producers of those media. So now it is a problem with gaming? Why do you care if the developer doesn't get more money? They got money when the initial game was bought. This happens everywhere. Ford makes no money on used car sales. Furniture producers never make money on used furniture sales. I have no idea why you think it is a problem in gaming but not a problem in anything else?

    • @condoman45
      @condoman45 7 лет назад +25

      Jen B I believe the problem isn't that it "hurts" the developers. The problem is you're supporting a business that doesn't care about gamers. I'd rather give money to Best Buy or Amazon definitely not Walmart though. Than I would to gamestop.

      Do you think used car salesmen care about drivers? That is the nature of buying used items. I don't have much money so I will buy what I want at the lowest price. In my small town there is a gamestop and WalMart. Those are my 2 gaming choices.

  • @ignasia7230
    @ignasia7230 7 лет назад +3

    Having worked in Gamestops before...the saddest part is knowing how much extra space there often is for those DS cases, in every store I've been in.
    The gutting practice is also insane. I worked at a Software Etc. during transition. Better company. We either received, or had to make cheap boxes for the floor. Nothing was gutted.
    I was hoping the buyout would have gone the other direction. EB, Funcoland, and Software Etc. had tremendous respect for the industry, or at least considered what gamers likely would want.

    i hate to break it to you. but anywhere you buy a used game the developer doesn't get a cut, so that kinda makes that used portion kind of a moot point.
    and for your information i love used games. you talk of game stop disrespecting the developer. yet ms and sony both stated. going digital would reduce game cost in sales. because the physical aspect wouldn't be there, if that is the case. why was darksiders 2 on steam the exact same price as a retail copy. it's a full of shit tactic to trick people into digital so they can put more restrictions into the game top try and stop piracy. it's bullshit and all it does is hurt the consumer.
    i happen to neer want to see games go completely digital. i like having a physical copy of a game to add to my collection. i don't want to be reduced to another digit in a developers pocket book, fuck that.

  • @MusicIan423

    dude who cares if the dev doesn't get more? if they want to make more money they should charge more to begin with. Retail stores (I don't care about GameStop but I do local retro game stores) cost A LOT of money to maintain. Ya know how much those businesses make off of new game sales? Maybe $8. That takes a FUCKTON of new game sales to cover all the overhead from a retail store. Retro game stores (and also video game retail like GameStop) RELY on used game sales to cover all their costs. Stop buying used and you WILL SEE retail game stores disappear. You think that doesn't hurt the video game industry? You're really short-sighted in this. The game devs (or more importantly, game publishers) are afraid their games won't sell if they increase the price to $70 or $80, but that is unfortunately the only "moral" or "ethical" way to solve this problem. Unless you think that retail video game stores SHOULDN'T exist, and it SHOULD be digital only. In which case where are your morals? Putting people out of their jobs that they love? I wholly disagree with you.

    reselling a game and the developers shouldn't get a dime! the lisencing has already been purchased and they've made their money! poor reason not to buy used! i'm not a gamestop fan. you reference bestbuy prices but the developer doesn't recieve money either. you need to understand how business works! developers make their money when the chain buys thousands of copies, then the business ie gamestop or bestbuy makes money by selling it to you! the developers don't make money off of you directly! works the same way with books! ridiculous video!

      @wingy158 7 лет назад +1

      GiftofChaosStudio the only good thing about pre-orders is that distributors get an idea of how many games to ship to a district. That's pretty much it. But even then, developers make projections on how well their game is gonna sell. I mean, yeah. If you have an idea how a game is made and promoted you watch a video like this and wonder if a title like this is only click bait or misinformation from a former retail employee.

    • @BPGRYT
      @BPGRYT  7 лет назад

      +wingy158 obviously neither of you fully get how retail works either. Did you know when a game is on sale most of the time it's by the decision of the publisher of the game. They then reimburse a company for the difference. They also can get a discount for moving a certain amount of product. GameStop also gets more money if they can hit preorder quotas. Yes it helps with gauging interest in a game, to bad it can be way off as well. I never said the developer deserved money for a used game. I have had plenty of people comment thinking they recieved part of a used games sales. You are also implying my opinions on used games apart from how GS operates that market.

    • @GiftofChaosStudio
      @GiftofChaosStudio 7 лет назад +1

      Back Pocket Game Reviews "gamestop gets more money if they can hit their quotas". You did well to highlight my points... the publisher is selling to big chains and is using them to push higher preorders. what are pre orders? they are the confirmed numbers gamestop will buy on top of the X number of copies. bonuses happen in all business bud! all an incentive to again drive the purchases from the publusher. that is the publisher making THEIR cut of the sale... as for sale prices (has nothing to do with my original comment) i can't say other than perhaps it's in a contractual agreement. sale prices just seem like a tool for a game not selling well to sell out of stores forcing the store to order more. or to simply inflate numbers for stock holders and investors to be happy, which seems a legit reason. i do have an extensive knowledge of business bud, my mba and 13yrs on wall st might suggest it. All I've done is highlight with a broad brush how sales from publisher to the consumer work, you on the other hand didn't really tell me how I was wrong, but just suggested deeper intricacies of the relationships of large chains and publishers.

    I used to buy from GameStop a lot and recently I got a PS4 slim from them after trading in my Xbox one for it. I realized over the years that they always seem to rip people off or even the overly used power up rewards upsell gimmick. Yes I understand as a company they are supposed to do that. But at the end of the day when it comes to video games, I would rather buy them from an online retailer like eBay or Amazon. Because they have better deals, they are cheaper, and you don't have to worry about anybody try to upsell you or even rip you off. I'm glad I don't go to this store because now that I shop online and games are much cheaper. Everyone's different and I respect that. Happy gaming everyone

      Catharsis Chrystal They aren't. Digital is far more expensive, is inconvenient, and affords you no rights of ownership.

      @TheChryystal 7 лет назад +2

      Mike D why do you think that?

    • @VampireKa1n
      @VampireKa1n 7 лет назад +2

      Catharsis Chrystal because it's the truth. On console, digital is always much more expensive than a new physical copy, and when digital DOES have a good sale, used physical is almost always still cheaper or within a couple dollars. It is inconvenient because you need to wait hours for the download whereas you only wait minutes for a disc to install, and if you ever want to play a game again after previously deleting it to make room for other games, you need to download it AGAIN. Digital is simply a license that can be revoked, does it ever happen? No, but the mere fact that it can be makes me stay far away. A disc is physical property that you own, it can be sold or borrowed as you please and cannot be taken from you.

    I remember 3 years ago I pre-ordered a bundle pack for Smash 4 (Wii U) at GameStop and the day when Smash 4 came out, they didn't have the bundle pack for Smash 4 so I had to play a little extra cash on the GameCube Adapter and the GameCube controller.
    Another story: The day the SNES mini came out I was at another GameStop with Best Buy and Target next door together. It was a fairly short line and when the employee that was working at GS, she informed the line that there's only 5 SNES minis so she handed the tickets to the first 5 people in line. Good thing the Best Buy next door had 200 SNES mini shipped to them and I managed to get a ticket from them thanks to the people who were waiting at the GS line.
    No wonder why several GameStop stores are closing worldwide because of their shady services.

    When I sold my 2DS, I brought in everything like the box and had it in there like it was brand new and before i walked away from the counter, I saw the girl go "pfff" and toss the box, manual and everything HARD into the trash with an attitude. That to me was so disrespectful to both me the customer and to the 2DS. She acted like me trying to sell my 2DS was a bother and that because I didn't bring it into the store in a used crinkled up shopping bag but instead its original box carefully packed away with all the trimmings.

    What's the alternative? The only alternative I heard was buy from Best Buy. My nephews and I LIVE in GameStop and we're "casual" gamers. I love their deals on buying used games because I'll spend no more than $30 bucks. After watching your video, I don't feel bad but if GameStop is so bad, what's next?

  • @wingy158
    @wingy158 7 лет назад +17

    Actually no developer or publisher makes no money from used copies or products.
    It's up to the companies if they want their products sold used at a retail store.
    There's always a market for a cheaper product used or new.
    And for someone who worked at GameStop you should know that GameStop makes $1 for all new systems sold and almost nothing for new games.
    Plus, Gamestop isnt the only resaler, they're just the biggest.
    As for the DS game cases that are thrown away, do you remember how many DS games were traded in? Heaven forbid a small store doesn't have room for 4 glass shelves for the DS games.
    I feel like this was a rant from when you last worked at GameStop.
    There will always be pre-orders and warranties, that isn't going away. Look at Amazon, they ship they're games early before retail stores get them in.
    Normally i enjoy you're insight but this video just felt way too bitter just for the sake of being bitter. Just to be clear, I'm not fully supporting the sale value on games GameStop offers, especially on new games (just released) but a store that offers more like Best Buy is because they actually have a wide variety of product at their store. So in this case, the comparison is like Walmart to Gimbles. Two different stores that may or may not have that one shirt you're looking for.

    • @BadBrad119
      @BadBrad119 7 лет назад

      you're basically saying that BestBuy would not make ANY money from new console or games sales, yet still keep their departments open. I have nothing against gamestop or the Canadian EB games, it's more of a question of why someone is willing to buy a game that is not new, for only $5 less. EB games getting $50+ per game that they sell used (that they didn't have to develop at all) is crazy. They even took the reprint run of Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) and opened them all up, and sold them as used for $80-$90. In short, they bought the games for $40-$50 and sold them for twice of that, JUST BECAUSE IT WAS A GAME IN HIGH DEMAND. Completely disregarding the developer. You don't see them opening new copies of the newest CoD so that they can sell it as used.. They are, in a nutshell, hijacking the game industry

    • @BPGRYT
      @BPGRYT  7 лет назад

      +B-Rad Gaming Best Buy looses money on every game they sell with gamers Club unlocked. It keeps you coming back for other items. I work retail man we even do that in my store

    • @wingy158
      @wingy158 7 лет назад

      B-Rad Gaming i said GameStop makes a dollar for every new console they sell. Keep in mind, Best Buy sells other items.
      And a hijack would be if no one else sold or bought used games. This whole argument that used games hurt the industry when a video makes more money than a blockbuster movie makes me wonder how naive people are.

    • @BadBrad119
      @BadBrad119 7 лет назад

      wingy158 but if bestbuy only made $1 from each console, they wouldn't bother with entertainment and just stick with TV's and PC's. They get a bigger cut than that, but nowhere near as big as buying a game for $5 trade credit and sell for $5 less than retail. That is a huge margin that doesn't seem fair compared to those selling new games for retail, and only getting a maximum of $5 per game

    • @wingy158
      @wingy158 7 лет назад

      B-Rad Gaming i have no idea what you're talking about. I don't know best buy's business practices.
      But if you're talking about how GameStop buys Final Fantasy XV for $22 and sells it for $54 then i get why you're mad.
      Keep in mind, you have to look at GameStop as a pawnshop that happens to sell new items.
      Yes, pawnshop. Because when someone sells a game, employees are required BY LAW to take the seller's i.d.
      So, Best Buy is it's own enterprise.
      Walmart is their own enterprise.
      GameStop is their own enterprise.
      These places are completely different from each other and they lose money and gain money from the demand that we create from websites like amazon and ebay, believe it or not.
      You're comparing apples to oranges when you talk about what each store does and how it's "unfair" to the gaming industry. If selling used games was so harmful they would have gone out of business a long time ago.

    Meh. It's kinda annoying to hate a company for wanting to stay in business. I don't necessarily care for Gamestop but I think it's unfair to them considering they made a push against digital by refusing to carry console bundles that included digital games for a bit. Also DLC will never go away no matter what and to be honest I don't blame Gamestop or did I even think they were behind it. Still don't. The trade values, DEAD HORSE. The pre-orders, personally I don't get offended, IMO the inconvenience of tracking down someone at Target to get the game I want out of the case is worse. And as far as Best Buy and Target not pressing the Preorders, games is a department there. They don't need to. Tossing game cases I can't argue. Gutted games I don't buy unless it is super cheap. All of corperations are evil. I won't stop shopping at Gamestop. Unless you can point me to another store where I can get quality PS3 games for .99 cents.

      except if you couldn't get used copies then you'd have to buy new which means more sales. So ultimately developers are selling less and less copies because they are getting recycled.

    • @sprint7412
      @sprint7412 5 лет назад

      @@dennisj2358 Recycling is good for the earth and helps lower prices. If the game is really good then people won't want to resell their games which keeps the game at its original price longer since it would be more difficult to find a used copy. But if the game isn't great then the market will have a lot of used and cheaper copies and then the developers/stores would loss money if they don't lower the price to compete with the used copies. Of course over time it will be easier to find great used games in the market since some people don't want to keep a game they've played dozens of times, but by then the developers would have already made a large profit from those games and the production for the games might have even stopped.
      If GS and other businesses have to give a percentage of the profits to the developers for selling used games, then the used games will be more expensive and that would just hurt customers.

There is NO piracy on PS3/4 Xbox 360/1 because of the complexity of cracking them and you notice he doesn't say who is being pirated right? Also like people have commented, the publisher has already received their money on new sales. What logic compels a game publisher to get a profit every time the game is sold? Back Pocket Game Reviews One: The compatibility is not that great for burned games and you make it sound like every console owner practices piracy, that in itself is insulting as hell. Two: piracy isn't as widespread among the newer consoles due to complexity and heavy encryption and if your are referring to classic roms and older ps and other console iso images at what point do you not get THE PUBLISHER made his or her money on the property? Are you a publisher of games? So by your logic roms and game disk images even those the publisher has willingly given to the public (similar to entertainers giving their music as MP3s for free) should still be paid and it's still piracy right? Is Nintendo or Sony or Sega suing every single person who is using their roms or iso images in the emulation scene? Nice of you to call everyone who uses an emulator a pirate. So I guess many of us are in your eyes nothing but pirates who steal billions from all the major game houses. But it's ok for them to steal in microtransactions, broken games, even crippled hardware (ex: Xbox One) and insult their fanbase in abusive emails, rants, and firing game critics who give less than stellar game reviews? You know, you just hit a new low in hypocrisy right? This could go on and on but I think I just proved my point. (Unsubscribes)

      +Red's 3rd Dimension Gaming so I just started my last of us let's play. It's good so far, I would argue that the Witcher 3 is the best game of this generation

      Back Pocket Game Reviews I actually didn't like the witcher 3's gameplay. I couldn't finish it. Once you play Bloodborne and then The Witcher 3, you cannot go back. The combat is much more fluid and better than The Witcher, but that is just me. Bloodborne is definitely a gem for this gen.

    The EB Games/GameStop locations in my area are really bad for things like this. All of my friends in the same area treat their games well, yet every used game I've seen from them were scratched up pretty badly, and some didn't even work because employees are not required to check if the game works when someone returns their copy. If it's not too scratched up to them, they'll just take it.
    Also, the same chains are notorious for buying games in pristine shape for less than 10$ CAD, when the original buying price was well over 30$, more often 35~50$. I had a small pile of games that I wanted to sell, and I went to check what those chains would purchase them for. Out of 8 games, all in very good condition with everything that came with the games when I had bought them brand new totaling at easily 200$, they would buy for less than 20$. So I took them to a different store entirely in my area that is a Canadian exclusive called Mircoplay, and I got just about 80$ for the same exact games, so the difference was startling. Another big thing that Microplay does is that when you sell them anything, they will not force you to purchase anything, and will open a credit account instead, which can be used at any time you please, which is something EB Games/GameStop has never done here. The latter will force you to purchase something after they ripped you off.
    Now, if I had to choose between the two companies in my area, Microplay would immediately be the better choice, as unlike EB Games/GameStop, you can clearly see that their stores are a gamer's heaven. Rather than shove advertisements and pre-order offers down your throat, the stores play soundtracks from very popular classic titles, especially The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the entire place is literally decorated with memorabilia from both old and new game franchises, and they keep vintage game consoles on display in the front window, which you would never see at EB Games/GameStop. It's a shame that they only operate in Canada, as the actual chain that owns Microplay only operates in Canada.

    I remeber having an small retro game store in my town. Eb games did take over that store and added newer games while keeping the retro. Gamestop happend 4 year later, and the following days all of the retro game where missing.
    This store has now turned 50% of there area into an gaming merc place. By removing alot of pc,nintendo games and consoles. And replacing if with tshirt,toys, skylander, e.tc

    Keep believing everything the publishers and console makers tell you.
    The second games become all digital the price of games are going to be very high, and the consumer won't have any other alternative like Amazon or GameStop to provide competition to reduce prices...
    Just look at the prices of some 2 year old games on psn or Xbox store and see how expensive it still is.
    What you're trying to do is tell people to give up their rights as a consumer.
    This video disappoints me and shows how foolish people can be...

    Something that you probably never had to deal with because this was years ago, but GameStop (which was EB Games in Canada at the time) had a policy in which that if you paid using Debit or Credit, their system would require the sales rep to record the whole 16 digit number. This meant that they were endorsing credit and debit card fraud and allowing employees on both sides access to the numbers. This was a very shitty practice that I am not sure when it ended, but went on for years.

    Didn't the developer get paid when the game was purchased as new the first time? When you sell your used chevy do you kick up some of the money from that sale back to General Motors? I don't have a dog in the fight, and I haven't owned a game system in over 4 years but I thought I had to comment. And I also do not work for a game store or retailer, I work in the auto industry. GO COWBOYS!

    • @BPGRYT
      @BPGRYT  7 лет назад

      +bobandbecca727 so the point your missing if they decide to go all digital to avoid the mass not even week old games that get traded and cut into their sales. Chevy can't decide well here is your digital non transferable car due to our loss in profits. Games can, and on PC already have.

    • @BPGRYT
      @BPGRYT  7 лет назад

      +bobandbecca727 the other thing you have to take into consideration, the less money they make on games the less willing to take risks they are gonna be. Games keep getting more and more expensive to make. While this is true with cars as well the profit margin on a game is much thinner then on a Car. They make a huge mark up for selling a car from the cost to make it. Each game makes a slim margin. So if those margins shrink due to any reason they think they can control, you'll see those reasons vanish. So to kill their loss in sales they can kill the accrual disc to prevent GameStops used game sales

    yeah man i work at a gamestop, prowearpsn is a good friend of mine and one of your fellow subscriber "posse", I agree with most of what you are saying. I hate gutting games. I at least try to find sealed games with a loose disc. the trade system needs to be fixed, especially with retro games, and the COL is the worst thing ever in Gamestop as an employee. you are right with used games with how they are priced, but I look at it from a business standpoint. If I went to a local used car dealer and bought a car none of that revenue will go to the maker of that car. Im not trying to defend them its just a moral stance as you say. plus the whole rent games as an employee, I believe it changed, well at least where I'm from. It has to be used and there has to be more than 2 copies. I hope it doesn't sound like im trying to contradict you.

    • @BPGRYT
      @BPGRYT  7 лет назад

      +luis3593 no your good man. Yes from a business stand point I get what they do and why. But it has caused them to have a bad relationship with a lot of publishers. It's also pushing things much quicker to an all digital age. It already is on PC just a matter of time till that trigger is pulled on console. Which will be a big dagger in the heart of GameStop. Used sales on a week old game take away a lot from the developers sales numbers and can hurt their bonuses.

    I only go to Gamestop because I live in a small town where the option is Gamestop or a tiny Best Buy that usually stocks nothing, much like Walmart or Target. Gamestop tends to carry the more obscure titles. Like I have never seen a Tales game anywhere except Gamestop in this town. I could order online, but the shipping prices are ridiculous and with all of the news of packages being stolen, even in a small town I worry about it. Besides that I am extremely impatient and hate waiting for shipping.
