My absolute favorite is the Voyager Vaquero XL serrated
@@Natecoxy I have a serrated blade because it cuts three times deeper through fibrous and biological materials
@@chrisdyck6524 that's what the marketing says, have you tested it? Serrations cut really well but they grab loose material and drag it over the surface of what you want to cut. I tested cold steel and spyderco serrations, spyderco did a little better but still pretty useless. They would be fine if you were defending yourself against a naked attacker, but a hoodie or something, you will barely scratch what's underneath. Don't believe me? Test it for yourself.

Wise Men Company signet ring for Endura/Matriarch is what your ring grip is ;)
Appreciate ya. I was having a brainfart apparently at the time fo this vid. Bought another from them since for a warncliff delica with a wave opener. Good product!
@@5MinuteKnives They look pretty epic, I was online looking for one mid vid I was that impressed! Thanks for making the clip, I appreciate it 🤘
@@TheRealHoltzy Back atcha. (New giveaway coming soon.) Stay safe!
I agree 💯. The "Filipino' grip seems ridiculous to me.....other than a very few circumstances....which will NEVER come in am actual knife fight. Nobody realizes the best weapon in a knife fight is your feet..... I absolutely LOVE my Matriarch, but I PRAY to any deity that will listen...that I never have to use it.
Thank you! And I totally agree on the matriarch. Stay safe out there!
If you really think you’re badass enough to knife fight you need to get your ass beat lol. You’re better off with a gun or running
You can’t think of the Matriarch as a traditional knife. It’s a hook 🪝, a hook that will do serious damage to someone’s face or arm (if they raise it to protect the face).
Wow, so the entire Filipino culture on knife fighting is just ridiculous.
Not everybody is physically capable of running away, or they have someone they need to protect. Repeating the "just run away, duh..." mantra is very short sighted.
Anyway, I pair a fox478 in my forward hand with a large stabbier CRKT M16 in my rear hand. They go well together. Slash at their forward hand and arm with the karambit and if needed follow up or simultaneously slash or stab at their defense with the stabbier rear blade.
The karambit are excellent at blocking as well as making their nearest limb into a distraction to them opening up possibilities for you. Also a two blade combination is not so vital against one bad guy but if there are more it will do a lot to put them off grabbing you and taking you down. Karambits are extremely hard to grab and get control of, much more so than regular blades.
This is the Matriarch, and the Cold Steel Black Talon 2 is the Patriarch. 💯
personally I think it's more effective using a karambit in reserve grip because if yours has a metal ring you could punch with it more accurately and slash too and carrying it tip up with the clip on the left side in your right pocket let's you draw it better and you could even do a draw cut if properly trained with it
I spent the last 20 years as a striking coach. "Punching with the ring is weird, hurts yourself and takes away reach. (Punch a heavy bag with it sometime) Also if you fall you could break the ring finger in stead of possibly the pinky (which slips out much easier if you wind up wrestling) . You really don't want to break your ring finger in a fight... but to each his own. If taking away reach to "punch" with a ring saves your life in a knife fight, then I guess that was the right move. Just glad I never tried that...
I have a Spyderco Harp. EDC since 1984. Still as sharp as it was from the factory. Seki-City, Japan. I'm hoping to pass it down with the same luck I've been blessed with, never touched flesh.
I took it apart to clear out the sand after a beach trip and successfully put it back together although it behaves ever so slightly different
Not by much enough to worry.overall I'm happy I was able to do that
Last attempt was a kershaw and I failed to reassemble it
I hate it when I screw a knife up that way. Glad it worked out!
I'm glad you mentioned Spyderco's customer service. As a long time Spyderco collector I absolutely love the knives but their service is "HORRIBLE"
The great thing about Spyderco customer service....is I've never had to use it. I've bought a half dozen Benchmade knives (out of 20 I've bought) that had to go back for omega springs or auto springs....and had to pay to ship it after paying the ridiculous butterfly tax. I own two dozen Spyderco's....and have never had the first problem with them. They've sold me on their products for life....unless they go the way of Cold Steel, sell out, and start putting out garbage for their higher end pieces.
Oh wow I really like that first one the Fox knife. I agree about the lock though lol. Great vid man!! 🤙🏻🍻
Appreciate it!
The index finger is actually not that important anatomically speaking. Humans can use the middle finger in its place easily, but not the case with a pinky finger. A loss of the pinky makes your grip much weaker. If I had to part with one of my fingers I would choose an index finger.
I learn something new everyday. . .
Should do the Matriarch's sister. The Spyderco Civilian.
just so u know the origin of holding a knife with a ring in the "earth" grip comes from filipino martial arts which are some of the best in the world, its ok if it doesn't fit ur fighting style but it is obviously effective. btw, they are made for clinch fighting, in fact many of the most popular ones in the philippines are extremely small and made to be concealed so reach is in no way the aim for the design.
Very true but my Muay Thai days are far beyond me so I still like the extra 4"-6" of reach with the same muscle memory as my gun or throwing a punch. (But thanks for letting us know that.)😉
@@5MinuteKnives you are very welcome bro, i completely understand ur point and have to say I'm extremely impressed with ur response time

Ughh going back to the evo I remember you saying yours wasn't centered i realized mine is the same and its recently been snagging the screws for the pocket clip right at the tip of the blade it bugs me but yet again great content my man keep it up
Kinds honeslty regret the fox wish I would've just gone with a microtech OTF
(Just saw this for some reason.) I feel your pain. Fix has an incredible design but they can't seem to get quality control down. Such a bummer. The microtech otf would've been awesome (although a lot more $$) Appreciate you tuning in!
The drawbacks on using a reverse grip for karambit style knives are nice tips. I’m curious about your thoughts on carrying a folder in general for EDC should it need to be used. I’ve asked myself is there too much muscle memory for the spydie hole and the added resistance of lock backs? What are your thoughts?
I like the Boker Hel folding Karambit for self-defense. And I rarely hold a knife in the reverse grip. Takes away too much reach and different muscle memory form handguns and punching. Not my preferred method at all...
Thanks for the video. Where does one acquire the ring added to it? Stay safe!
no problemo! Three wise men company I believe. 👍
@@5MinuteKnives They’re not available on their site, so that’s why I was asking. 😏😨 Thank you though.
No problem bud...@@flhandster4395
Grip is personal preference. When holding a blade tip down reverse you are limited in range and use.
Serrations and blade shaped were made to specifically keep your blade from getting caught on bone and muscle that tightens up. Originally designed for undercover officers who had a backstory that prohibited them from carrying a gun (must do not caring m carry a gun.) They can afford to have indepth training, so this makes self defense much easier.
(Or so they say)
Leave it up to a marine to rah at any chance they can.
reverse grip on this design (with the ring) takes away over 6" of reach vs foregrip! It's a crazy difference. The only way I'd ever switch to reverse grip is if I needed to do something else with my hands or I was in a tight hallway. Thanks for tuning in!
Yep, took me a while to relearn self defense techniques, just to use a karambit. But now that I have, I prefer it, it makes locking up the aggressor's hand/arm and disarming them a lot easier
I just have no training in reverse grip karambit so I'm holding my matriarch in a forward facing slashing "tiger claw" style. If you want to complain and bitch about my non professional style not taught by an expert ..than PLEASE come to the St Louis metropolitan area on the Illinois side and teach affordable classes for the everyday gentleman that wants to genuinely learn self defense. I bought it for the pourpose it was intended for. Not much training maximum effect. Not for lack of trying.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Reverse grip is dumb, I agree with you
Hands down the best slasher out there.
Actually the coldsteel Talon slashes much better.
@@porkchopspapi5757 actually……
I've been carrying the Matriarch for a while whenever a needed a low profile defensive blade. However lately I moved to a Massad Ayoob in cruwear because while keeping most of the defensive benefits of the Matriarch is more utilitarian. I can actually use it as EDC also because even if it's not razor sharp it doesn't lose its main feature which is its stabbing ability. Have you ever tried one? Curious to know what your feelings are about those
I have not tbh, but I'm interested in checking it out. I'll see if Bladeops has them in stock...
How’s the action on yours I feel like mine isn’t great
@@iznonwt you mean on the Matriarch or on the Ayoob?
What's the difference between 1 & 2, smaller grip?
Hi, really good video but I have some questions about the knife, as it is a slashing knife, if I'm defending against a man with for example a big jacket and a lot of clothes, would I make something to him? And the other question, is it able to stab? The curvature of the blade and the thinness of it makes me fell like if I had to stab someone/ something in order to defend myself the blade will break or will not pierce it.
Thanks
You may be confusing this with a fighting knife.
Great review!
appreciate ya!
Can you please tell me where I can get this beast, top notch channel respect 🍀🇮🇪👊
Appreciate ya Alex. I picked this one off knifecenter and the ring comes from the 3 wisemen company. 👍
Boker Plus makes a Jim Wagner reality based blade they make one like that with a recurve and a spear point blade that's plane edge and one that's serrated on the recurve only and I never liked it, same with that Spyderco why would you want all that blade with nothing but serrations on it to keep it from cutting deep I want a blade to cut I don't mind sensations at the back for doing utility work but the front of my blade I want to do some serious cutting!
True, but this isn't that kind of knerfle thouh. (I did get rid of it though. One of our subscribers got it.)
Just a matriarch, pretty stiff to open. I have Spyderco knives and they flicked open easily, this matriarch is a little stiff. Is that how they are?
Nevermind watching the video, mine seems similar to that action
Initially, but mine broke in nicely. If it's really stiff, you potentially have a lemon. 👍
Mine is ridiculously stiff can I send it in or just the luck of the draw
"Don't debate me, BRO!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Reverse grip in knife fighting is absolutely counterproductive
That's how I've always felt. Never saw the need to take away reach just to look cool...
"Don't sharp shoot me guys".. lol. Great video. 👍
🤘
Did that matriarch2 develop any vertical play all these time?
Mine did not BUT I never really used it. It was mainly a self-defense carry for me (if that helps). Thanks for tuning in!
Training is the best self defense
And... water is wet. 😆
The ring messes up the design. It makes it obvious you have a knife. And if you dont know karambit, it is a disadvantage.
It's always obvious I have a knife. (And I do.) The clip on these endura frn handles isn't deep carry anyway (sticks out about .5") so this isn't a discrete knife to start with. Also too long for many states legally so where you could get into trouble is buy having it completely concealed (legally speaking). The ring is mainly for rock climbers and emergency responders who have to cut nylon and rope with one hand (or people like me who have nerve damage in my dominant hand due to a blade going through it 10 years ago) and can't feel some fingers. Where I live, we spend a lot of time outdoors and nobody freaks out over knives but I guess it depends on your POU. Thanks for stopping by. 👍
Different strokes for different folks. I put mxg or lynch clips on all my blades. I prefer the spyderco co salt tasman with serrations over this blade geometry. Why? You could do more puncture cuts with it. I own this matriarch and find it a bit delicate at the tip. As far as the ring. I respect your opinion. Knives are a matter of one's personal preference. Good review.
Fun to talk knives. I am also a first responder and from a rescue/trauma perspective the ring thing u mentioned doesnt happen over here. We have our trauma shears such as Raptors and maybe a spyderco assist. This could puncture someone while attempting to splint or make a tourniquet. And with working with the public you realize we work with psych patients. No ring. No matriarch for fire/paramedic/trauma nursing etc. Maybe, LEO.
Wise men is signet ring company.
Thank you!!! I had to look it up but forgot to update here. Appreciate ya!
One swipe with that Spyderco and game is over.🚑 I heard the FBI carry them and other government law enforcements. Honey badger is a good little Hawk bill for the money.
herewith a comment for the algo

So Matriarch or Civilian or Black Talon ?
Matriarch... with the wave opener and the 3 wise men ring. 👍
How difficult is it to install the Wisemen Ring ?
@@lylesmith5079 not too hard, just pricey for what it is...
Civillian
The spyder co civilian is better.
no wave opener...
The Evo makes no sense.
That blade will snap like a toothpick once it hits bone. Buy a cold steel talon if you want a claw knife. Karambit cuts tend to make a j shape. In reality, you should probably have a stiletto for self defense. Trust me, that matriarch tip will break in no time. Better to have a spyderco cricket
had a talon for awhile. Ended up giving it to a friend. If I ever have to use it, the tip breaking is the last of my concerns. The "S" shape is also amazing for cutting seatbelts and the like as well. The cricket is too small and deploys too slow. This baby is out in a flash! (I also really like the reach.) Anyway, your points have been noted and I appreciate you sounding off on this one. :)
Pretty certain that, that is extremely untrue considering what this was designed for. Do you not think that during development, ™️Spyderco dismissed all testing of this knife? I HIGHLY highly doubt it. That being said, my initial, first thought/reaction once I read that comment about the tip snapping off once it hit "bone" was..
Well, if it hit "bone" I am pretty much going to guess that it did its job now didn't it! 🤦♂️😅🤣🤣
Heaven forbid ANYONE, and I mean anyone ever have to defend their life with one of these, let alone any recurve/"S" shaped "hawkbill" 🔪EVER.
You cannot imagine how messy it would be, and how deplorable the scene may just end up getting.. just the visualization of opening "something/someone" up like a zipper (effortlessly) and the fat flying out! oOoUFF!
😬🙈Crazy shit man.

Who cares if it takes 2 hands to close?
Rock climbers, fisherman, first responders ect. . .
@@5MinuteKnives Why would any of them care if their purpose built self defense knife closed with one or two hands. That sounds like a feature they would want in the knives they carry that are designed for the tasks they’re doing. Right tool for the right job. That would be like me bitching that my phillips does’t work as well as my slotted screwdriver on a slotted screw. After all, they’re both screwdrivers.
@@Do_the_work Because their other hand may be in use genius. lol Stop arguing with me. I'm just telling you the feedback I get form them based on your first comment. Go do something productive. 🤣
Tell me you have not been trained with a karambit without telling me you don't know how to use one.
I've been trained in knife fighting but not with a karambit... but I can hold a tool and understand reach.
@@5MinuteKnives that is the difference with a karambit. It is not used as the conventional bladed weapon. It is not used as an extention of your arms. It is designed to be used under your fist with sweeping motions to be combined with defensive as well as offensive martial arts movements. All the points you made about lack of reach are EXTREMELY valid if you try to use the karambit in the same manner as a straight blade. No doubt. I know you dont understand the difference. That is cool. I get your issues with the tool. No worries, you wouldn't use a screw driver on a 1/2" hex nut I would hope. Different tools for different applications. Flip it and use it as you see fit. No worries. Just don't dismiss the proper way to use an actual karambit because you may not have been trained in the most effective way. :)
Please don't think for a moment I am not respecting your training. I truly hope I was able to make my point without sounding like an ass. If I did, I sincerely apologize.
