I ordered my 78 King Cobra just after boot camp. Loved that car! Kept it 10 yrs.. kids came along and it hard to fit carseats in the back. One of the best handling cars I've ever owned.
@Tramram The First my car isn't rotting away. I don't have to be driving it to enjoy it either. All my friends sold their cars long ago and now wish they still had them. True car guys cherish the memories attached to the car and will never sell. The money I would get selling it pales in comparison to the pride of ownership. If I had sold it , the money would be long gone and I would be just like my friends wishing they never sold. Some people never have a connection with a car, especially newer cars with no soul. I'll finish it someday and that first drive will be a permanent memory I'll cherish until I die. Money isn't everything.

SmoothTheKid maybe not to you, but to a lot of people who know these cars, there’s definitely a market. The $70 k was retail, I’m sure someone with the cash can do better.
Ron Steurer Steve McQueen’s Bullit car is going up for auction, price tag is up well over 2 million, money is no object to some collectors! The guy that owns it got it from his dad, that found it back in the early 70’s, paid $3,500 for it. It comes with all the pedigree needed , including a letter from Steve asking to buy it, it sat in a barn for 35 yrs after his mom drove it to her school teaching job when the clutch went out and it was parked! It still has the camera mounts and cutouts for the movie equipment! I’m sure with a little search you can find the story, I saw it on a network news show this morning!
So few barn finds are that well documented, this was very satisfying to watch. The financial aspect is interesting too, It must be hard to detach emotions when one finds a childhood dream car that they can actually afford. A follow up would be nice.
Much more is known now than before. So much research has been done, untouched example cars documented, and Ford's info has come into the public light. When I first learned Mustangs back in the 1980s a lot of stuff was still unknown. A copy of this car's build sheet may even be available.
Yep that's why I pointed out out in one of my earlier replies that it's more or less the older generations of both the buyer and appraiser who actually have the ta$te for these car$.
It’s such a blessing to know that the buyer will be blessed for doing the right thing on the fair purchase price. Now I fully understand how the game works. I would imagine that being blessed is a far better thing than being condemned to HELL for trying to swindle a grief stricken widow woman out of a fair price ☮️
Similar story a mother kept her sons car who went to war in the 70's he died. She kept it but over the years the car was buried under hay.... how it survived I will never know. But the guys found it cleaned it up offered her 4k as to them it was a fair price.

@Imix Muan congratulations on your success as a vet! Obviously I didnt mean to mislead anyone into thinking that the cat had arrived when the barn was built and had been dutifully exterminating varmits for the last 50 odd years. Sometimes my humor can be a tad dry, thank you for pionting out that what i had written was completely illogical and thus allowing me to follow up with this clarification. Best wishes and thanks again!
@Imix Muan hi friend its me again! So it dawned on me that despite the age and disposition of the cats reproductive system it is well within reason that during his relatively short tenure as barn mouser he has protected the vehicles contained within from damage. So although you are correct that something else protected the cars before the arrival of the current cat its unreasonable to think that he didnt also dutifully kill rodents that would have otherwise chewed and pooped on valuable cars stored in the barn. Since the abscence of rodents does not prove that there were no rodents to begin with I guess we just have to settle with accepting my original statement was in fact accurate. Take care, talk again soon!
@Imix Muan My young neutered cat was an awesome mouser. He would also hunt any fly or insect in the house. Once he leaped up about five feet and grabbed a fly out of the air. You may be a vet but you don't know shit about cats.
I nuetered my calico/tabby mix when he was a yr old and his mousing instinct and ability is top-notch....he MORE than pays for his food/litter with his skills plus he's gentle with all people, loves to petted, and doesn't shed fur...best cat I've ever owned!!!

I would love to see an update to this segment. My neighbors mom was sitting on a Boss Mustang for so many years and never knew what she had until we went into her barn looking for some vintage Barbies. A guy flew out from Ft. Worth Texas the following week with his appraiser. She made $48 grand on a car that she had all but forgotten that she had stored away in 1986 after her husband past.
When they were talking about the hood locks, I was expecting the air cleaner and dual carbs to be gone. I was surprised when they were there, but not surprised when they discovered that the air cleaner housing was a reproduction. My guess is someone stole the original and the owner took steps to make sure that it didn't happen again. As others have mentioned, the original block may be in there somewhere, but there are two key questions that need to be answered. 1) WHY was it taken out. - Most guys don't yank engines and swap blocks "just because" 2) If the block is in there, what are the chances that it is salvageable? An exposed block is going to rust and get pitted in those conditions. Thank you for sharing this find, documenting the process, and finding a fair way to pay the owners family.
Probably blew the engine or ran out of oil or something and that's why the replacement engine had steel welded on the bottom front of the oil pan- so the rocks the driver hit and ruined the first one with wont repeat it. Seems like a LOT of stuff done to a car with only 40k on the odometer- rear end taken out, engine swopped, muffler rotted out and other changes, I have to wonder if it's not actually 140K
@@HobbyOrganist Back when that car was on the road, Iowa DOT salted the snot out of highways in the winter. Lot of rust problems in Iowa and Minn area. Actually the Shelby didn't look too bad as an Iowa car goes in the body rust dept.
It is nice to see a truly honest guy in any kind of Biz these days. I owned a small gun shop for a while back in 93 I had a little old lady ( Widow ) bring a Antique unrestored fully functioning S&W Russian Revolver over in a small Burlap drawstring bag. She was asking for $30. I had know Idea if it was Authentic or if it was a replica not worth much of anything but I knew $30 was a ridiculously low price so I offered $125 then brought the revolver to a local legendary Gunsmith he told me it was a $500 gun and wanted it for his own personal collection. I felt good about it and where it would end up so I left it with him got back to the shop called the Lady in and gave her another $125 so we split the sale proceeds. The next day a man claiming to be her son walked through the shop door and I was waiting for whatever bad thing that was about to happen to get over with and to my surprise he thanked me for helping his Mom and treating her fairly. That incident sowed the seed for a permanent philosophy regarding how I continued to conduct all business. For me the Fair thing felt better than a unfairly large profit at someone else's expense.

The appraiser was extremely knowledgeable! I like the part where he was saying original stripe, paint, stripe, paint, but this 1/4 inch section is not.
“Ah, anything in this general area right in here. Anything below the stereo and on this side of the Bicentennial glasses. Anything between the ashtrays and the thimbles. Anything in this three inches. Right in here, this area, that includes the Chiclets but not the erasers.”
If there is another person who knows more about Shelby's I'll eat my hat. And we never see the widow but judging from her cat, its health, and friendly personality, she is probably a wonderful woman. Cheers

Two things make me happy, this transaction / curatorship is handled honorably & at the buyer's expense (no lowball tricks)... & then the widow can enjoy some serious capital she maybe wasn't even counting on, to clear out some space in her barn.

The real hero of the story is the cat, we're it not for him every car in that barn would be chewed up and full of mice turds.
He was part of a dynasty. A long succession of feline guards, passing over responsibility to the next generation. Protectorate of the Cobra.

Id put the original block on a dedicated stand and keep it as a decoration

I felt good about it and where it would end up so I left it with him got back to the shop called the Lady in and gave her another $125 so we split the sale proceeds. The next day a man claiming to be her son walked through the shop door and I was waiting for whatever bad thing that was about to happen to get over with and to my surprise he thanked me for helping his Mom and treating her fairly.
