70's Robert Palmer is the best Palmer. "Hey Julia", "Sailing Shoes", "Every Kinda People", "Man Smart, Woman Smarter", "One Last Look", "Spanish Moon", "Some People Can Do What They Like", "Give Me An Inch", "Work To Make It Work", "Pressure Drop", "Trouble", "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)", etc. etc.. What a cut you got Allen Tousaint writing the song and producing it Lowell George from Little feat laying down the slide guitar And the legendary meters all over it
One of the best musical trilogies evah! Lowell George is heard on both "Sneakin Sally through the Alley" and his own composition, "Sailin' Shoes". Little Feat pretty much filled the position of his backup band on "Pressure Drop". Long story...boy do I remember those days...
Palmer's collaboration with Lowell George and probly others really boosted his act from brilliant to exrta terrestial...and your vid adds a nice icing on the cake, well done Sir!
My favorite RP song. Haven't heard it in a long while Bass is George Porter (The Meters), Art Neville (The Meters) on piano and guitar is Lowell George (Little Feat) Glad you enjoyed it!! Thanks
YES!!!! You finally did THE FIRST and THE BIGGEST Robert Palmer classic EVER, from all the way back in 1974!!!! ❤️ Robert Palmer was one of the greatest Rock/Blues/Funk/R&B singers ever. That man could do it all. R.I.P. Now, please do "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On," "Every Kinda People," "Bad Case Of Lovin' You (Doctor, Doctor)" and "You're Gonna Get What's Coming." THANK YOU. 🙌🏻
Robert Palmer is backed by Lowell George (slide guitar), Jody Linscott (percussion), and Steve York (harmonica), and the rest of the instrumentation is by The Meters : including Art Neville on keyboards, Leo Nocentelli on rhythm guitar, George Porter Jr. on bass, and Ziggy Modeliste on drums. The album's Wikipedia article actually has an external link to a website that I got the info about who the musicians are on this track. The bass is the best part of this song, George Porter Jr. is one of the best bass players!
Warm up for my first concert. Atlanta Rhythm Section was the other warm up. Main act was the Dream Weaver himself, Gary Wright. Palmer was a great stage performer.
A couple years ago, I was trying to find a reaction to this song and couldn't. Posted a comment saying so to a couple of reactors - finally found someone that reacted to this song and one of the most funky bass riffs out there!
Tight backing band on this one. The album lineup was a who’s who of players including Lowell George on guitar on this one. Written by Allen Toussaint and recorded by a few artists, including Ringo (!). This version is best.
Everything he did was fantastic. Can also recommend his cover of Get It On (Bang a Gong) with The Power Station. Their original song Some Like It Hot is a banger as well. RIP Robert.
Hi Jamal! Love what you do. The one who is the originator of this song is Lee Dorsey from New Orleans. It's beautiful New Orleans funk. It only seems right to give that a listen. Peace and thanks!
I had completely forgotten how funking groovy this song is. Brother Jamel, you are doing a first rate job of keeping the great music alive! Sailin' Shoes is a natural follow up to Sally.
Very true...Was missing Sailing shoes, big time...don't know why but there were certain albums that had songs transition into the next one and just don't sound right right when you don't hear the entire sequence.
yo Jamel, this is the third song in a three song suite…..with Sailing Shoes and Hey Hey Julia. It’s better with all three in a row….the LP really didn’t have a break between tracks…
As someone else mentioned, a band called "The Meters" provided most of the music. They were a New Orleans funk band that played from the mid 60's to the 70's. They put out several awesome albums of their own. Please Jamel check out some of their material. Funkyness guaranteed.
Noice! I saw Robert Palmer years ago and before the show my friend and I were having dinner at the hotel he was staying in and looked behind me and there he was eating. I did not bother him. lol Another very talented performer/artist, gone too soon.
Jamel loved your reaction. This song goes with two other songs. Robert Palmer “ Sailin shoes /Hey Julia/ Sneakin Sally Through the Alley” they are a Suite. You must hear all three together you’ll love it. 😀👍❤️✌️🌼
The reason the song is so groovy is because it's New Orleans through and through, being written by New Orleans' Allen Toussaint and recorded in New Orleans with Robert Palmer backed by New Orleans' own Meters (plus Little Feat's Lowell George on slide guitar). Of course Robert Palmer achieved fame and fortune in the '80s as a solo artist and as the vocalist in the Power Station, but this, his debut album, is his seminal work.
I agree with the other comments. You HAVE to listen to the full "Sailing Shoes/ Hey Julia/ Sneakin' Sally" medley! Palmer has members of Little Feat backing him up on this album.
Lowell George of Little Feat on slide guitar was a master. Listen to “Riverboat “ with Robert,Lowell and Little Feat. A slower funky burn. This was Robert before he did a Rod Stewart and went commercial.
I was just about to call this tune up on my YT playlist. This song is the jaaaaaammmmm! Written by Allen Toussaint and performed by The Meters and Lowell George.
Jamel, you FINALLY did it! Thank you SO much for finally reacting to one of my all time favorite songs! You're absolutely right- that bass is fire! And that band backing him up isn't just any old band- that's the Meters, who are the all time kings of New Orleans funk and soul. You owe it to yourself to check out "Look-ka Py Py" and "Cissy Strut" from them. The Meters were an instrumental group, but when you combine their greasy funk with a great singer like Robert Palmer, that's when magic happens. I only wish they had done more together. Oh yeah, we should also give Lowell George some credit- he is, after all, the one killing it on the slide guitar!
That's an Allen Tousaint song! Lowell George (Little Feat) on guitars, Simon Phillips on Drums, Steve York (Roberts ex-band mate from Vinegar Joe) on Harp; The Meters were on about half the cuts and there was a NY Rhythm section for the other half. The Bass player could have been George Porter Jr from the Meters or Gordon Edwards - credits don't list a bass player for this track.
My wife and I saw Robert Palmer in concert at the Alabama Theatre on Halloween Night AND the Concert started at Midnight! Everyone was wearing Halloween Costumes. Palmer was awesome! Wonderful Memories!
This is my favorite song from my favorite Robert Palmer album (his first). Lots of great stuff to listen to. Died way too soon (54 yrs). I also really like "You're Gonna Get What's Coming" from the Double Fun album.
JAJ, on this album the 3 songs Sailing Shoes, Hey Julia, and Sneaking Sally are played as one song. It's kinda like Dark Side of the Moon. They do a clean segue straight thru.
This is awesome. Favorite Robert Palmer song ever. I actually suggested this song to you almost a year ago. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Would REALLY like to see a reaction to the whole medley of Sailin' Shoes/Hey Julia/Sneakin' Sally.
Now you're venturing into the legendary New Orleans vibe with the likes of The Meters, Alan Toussaint. Not to mention The Neville Brothers and the greatest of all Professor Longhair.
This has been one of my favorite songs since i was a kid. I used to love when id go see my dad play and theyd rip into this for me. You might be surprised how many folks have done this including Fish. Check em out. Rip Robert. You are lived and missed. The man had no idea he was a white Brit.
