The sound of the motor will help keep the baby calm as well. She just came from an environment that was noisy. Heart beating, blood pumping, digestive sounds. The sound as well as the motion, which she is used to as well, will really help her transition to her new world. Great job. I am often amazed at your ingenuity.
+Maurizio Malavolta Earthquakes can be quite relaxing. I mean, why else would people sit on those "massaging" chairs that shake all over the place? #Kappa
+Chris Hall Wouldn't the legal system be willing to make an exception for me. I'm male. I guess that is a sensible argument to get what I want. If not I'm going to make even more drama.
+Stragemque I sleep like a baby when i have a noisy fan turned on in my room. A constant noise can be quite relaxing, that's why some people find the sound of rain or white noise soothing. But fans are better, they at least blow wind at you which makes you never want to leave your bed again. #Kappa

+LordDragox412 Me too. I find the noise of a moderately noisy fan to be very relaxing. I rest much better if it runs while I sleep.
+Krešimir Cindrić There are lots of long run videos on YT. I like; rain, wind, ocean sounds, train sounds, and rural night sounds such as frogs, and crickets.
+Stragemque it's actually good if you can get your baby to sleep through something like an active gathering of people like a diner. people who walk on eggshells around sleeping babies are just setting themselves for more of the same.
+apinakapinastorba worked for me when, when i wouldn't go to sleep they would put me in one of those baby carry things and put me on top of the huge speakers we had then play AC/DC and i would go straight top sleep
My first child, a daughter, was born around the same time as your baby! So I am absolutely LOVING baby woodworking related videos! Thank you so much! My wife enjoyed it as well, as we do all of your videos!
You make me feel bad that I am a grandfather and can't nail 2 sticks together. You have exceptional talent and brains to match. You are a pleasure to watch performing your passion.
Well Mathias now your skills are really going to be put to the test with the new bubs as she grows and goes thru the many stages of her and your life. I wish you all the best and Rachel too cheers
Seriously amazing. Matthias's brain knows no bounds. Following this channel is so good because you never know what Matthias will come up with next but you can guarantee it will be great, made of wood and with NO POCKET HOLES!!! Well done mate.Mrs Swagman says beautiful baby, a goddess in training and I'm sure we all agree.
First, congratulations on your first child! I'm excited to see how you are using your know-how to solve your new challenges as a father. As always, Lord bless you and yours.
There's a specific rhythm that babies need to get them to go off to sleep. And you totally nailed it! You're awesome! I wish I had this for each of my three kids at that age!
Mathias you would make an EXCELLENT machinist. Have you ever thought about getting into metal working? The initial investment is quite large (A few thousand dollars for a milling machine, lathe and tooling), but I think you would be capable of making some pretty incredible things! (Not that you don't already make incredible things!)
+Matthias Wandel depending on the material youre cutting and the cutters youre using. most can cut through softer aluminums like butter. and you can always use a cnc machine then you dont have to do any of the work!
Matthias, I don't know what it is about your videos but I love them. I don't work with wood, or anything of that nature so I'm not really sure why I watch them. I guess I just like watching you build stuff and I appreciate your videos.
McGuyver has NOTHING on you! Genius... and I really appreciate the editing so the video doesn't needlessly drag on... Icing on the cake is that you didn't beg for likes or subs... so of course I gave you both, well done :)
I found that infants are soothed by a humming or droning sound, and at surprising volume - much louder than your current fab, so if you have to rebuild any of it, be assured that it doesn't have to be whisper-quiet. Also was amazed to realize that a rhythmic clack (about once a revolution in your slow setting), and an associated bump helped to lull them during particularly difficult times, such as teething. (Sadly, didn't seem to help much during bouts of colic.) Thanks for sharing; best wishes to the family.
What a lovely daughter Mathias, could not help but to mention You covered that flat belt pully on the band saw build but that was several years ago.lol, do another thou, always love a Your vids, congrats again on the Baby Girl
lmao....the things people do to get a good night sleep. I could have used this idea 7-8 yrs ago. When you come up with a device to get kids to do their chores please post that as well. Congratulation on the baby and love your work Matthias :-)
wow great job. I was thinking of trying to remote control my baby's stroller while I walked him around my house for hours and hours but time flies by and now hes 4 :)
I can see a whole new line of plans since you two had a baby. Baby feeder, baby changer, self cleaning wooden diapers, wooden toys. I am sure a crib has already been made from recycled furniture. I can't wait for the next video.
This is just marvelous in all aspects. The choice of the materials, the different motors, the thinking about it and ... .don't forget the rocking bed. (Sorry - English is not my native language)
Haha, nice project! Actually, my aunt's husband made a similar solution to my cousins bed. But later when my cousin and sister slept in a bunk bed togheter, he slept upstairs and she below. She woke up, she was really seasick because he was rocking from side to side all night. So be careful with using it to much. Thanks for a great channel btw, always fun projects :)
if Canada is like Finland, then the hospital either gives you a box filled with essentials or some money worth the stuff in the box. it's common for parents to have the babies sleep in the box for a while.
Nothing like a baby swaddled in a cardboard box. The all new "programmable" auto-rocker with 24-piece cam set and 2-speed transmission. A design that parents and engineers alike can both appreciate.
I used two lego mindstorm motors to push the trolley back and forth. However, my wife never allowed me to use it as it was too loud :-) I love your setup. Just the rockers itself are ingenious and I should have thought of it myself back at the time.
+donald laisure (73SuperGlide62) I think Matthias and Rachel put it together themselves. Not sure if scratch-built or kit-bashed, but definitely a collaborative project.
Mathias, I have found you can quiet almost anything down if you isolate every point where two hard surfaces touch. I used old mouse pads and tool drawer rubber liner, which seems to work well enough for my purposes. Great idea though. repurposing the drill gear box.
Thanks for the video! A thought for future revisions / projects: What you have done here is create the mechanism contained in an auto windshield wiper motor. You can buy one from an auto junkyard for about $10.
Congratulations M,I haven't checked your vids for a while, still looking great as ever. Nice project, years ago my babies were both severe colics, so rocking was in order, I could have used one of these!
+Craig Hartel (Nuclear Moose) I wonder if his daughter would one day share that sentiment. If you're 15 and looking for attention (we've all went through that phase), and you can't stand any of the boys you know 'cuz none of em can make a warhead-carrying rocket using a paper clip and janitorial supplies, you just might get slightly upset.
Dear Matthias, thank you so much for your videos. They are such an inspiration and full of ingenuity and theoretical concepts made practical. You are very clever. I am referencing your videos to my university engineering students as an excellent way to give presentations for their projects. Many Thanks, please continue doing more of the same.
I really enjoy your videos Mathias, but was surprised to see you use drywall screws in everything as I've not been a fan of them except for drywall, then I watched your video on screws last week and I will be starting to use them a lot from now on, so thanks for that. Greetings from Scotland.
Wow. finally some useful staff. :) I bet it's not going to get as many views as marble shooter or slinky escalator. Lucky girl! She will have tons of very cool and very custom toys and things built for her. Please, create some more videos of these things!

+jellyfishbones0 Only under ideal circumstances. The stiffness of the wood may not be consistent. Also, the ends would have to be free to slide side to side, which they aren't. Which is why the arc isn't necessarily circular.
+Matthias Wandel Thank you Senpei, i forgot about wood being variable that way, . I am thinking about what freedom at the ends is or isnt there though, not sure i agree with you, but you got me thinking so thanks again. Thats probably the line between engineers and scientists right there, that level of detail. By the way, I did my own original beam proof using taylor series (of deflections and of Forces). It is different to every textbook I searched in, and a little more rigorous too and with an end result that agrees with the classic result. It has also been verified by my soil mechanics teacher who is a published mechanics of solids researcher and was surprised by my method. Again, thank you for reading my post and replying. The Beam proof is here if your interested imgur.com/a/wKiZP#0
+jellyfishbones0 As a mechanical engineering student who has just finished a course in Statics and finishing up dynamics, I find this comment fascinating.
I look forward to your videos coming out as they usually are informative and interesting. This one is no exception. I loved the cardboard box, my daughter slept in one for a few weeks as a newborn, she is well, not a newborn anymore, nor are her kids! Keep up the good stuff coming to us, eh?
Very cool contraption, love the emergency mode! :) Interesting bit about the crowned belt too, I've read your article on it and watched that video too, haven't seen that one, aparently. :/ Learned something new today.
Hush little baby, don't you fret. Papa's gonna mechanize your bassinet.
+Peter Collin And don't you cause any noisy commotion / you'll be soothed by its reciprocating motion
bravo
And if those cries and whimpers they hear, Papa's gonna throw it in second gear!
+PKMartin +1/like
+Peter Collin
Don't worry if the bassinet has big rolls
Be thankful it doesn't have any pocket holes.
Hey congratulations on the growing family! Excellent build also

This is just fantastic and the last part is hilarious.
When a baby is in need for EXTREME SOOTHING!
+Maurizio Malavolta I think Matthias will build her own roller coaster when she's 6 or so. Of course with the least possible amount of metal.
+Maurizio Malavolta Earthquakes can be quite relaxing. I mean, why else would people sit on those "massaging" chairs that shake all over the place? #Kappa
+SE45CX Just be careful not to build a baby "walker" as that can actually land you in jail in Canada.
+Chris Hall Wouldn't the legal system be willing to make an exception for me. I'm male. I guess that is a sensible argument to get what I want. If not I'm going to make even more drama.
+SE45CX You should be able to get that ;-) in the comment above!
the baby will sleep to the quiet humming of a motor
+Stragemque I sleep like a baby when i have a noisy fan turned on in my room. A constant noise can be quite relaxing, that's why some people find the sound of rain or white noise soothing. But fans are better, they at least blow wind at you which makes you never want to leave your bed again. #Kappa
+LordDragox412 Me too. I find the noise of a moderately noisy fan to be very relaxing. I rest much better if it runs while I sleep.
+LordDragox412 I usually sleep with AC humming sound

+Stragemque it's actually good if you can get your baby to sleep through something like an active gathering of people like a diner. people who walk on eggshells around sleeping babies are just setting themselves for more of the same.
i love it how she was sort of crying a bit and then you turned on the machine and POOF GONE
+xZYTECx Unfortunately, it doesn't always work this well!
+Matthias Wandel Babies are so variable that engineering them is a challenge.
+Matthias Wandel
who is little man? This mini Matt? Congrat dear! Awesome
+Alex Tango It's Harriet. He introduces her to us in the recent Q&A video.
I bet a stereo set and an AC/DC album would do for baby rockin'.
+apinakapinastorba That is for baby makin!
+Jonathan Mutchler lol
That too.
+apinakapinastorba worked for me when, when i wouldn't go to sleep they would put me in one of those baby carry things and put me on top of the huge speakers we had then play AC/DC and i would go straight top sleep
+apinakapinastorba Ronnie James Dio would do a lot better.
Producing more complicated motion patterns is how you got the baby in the first place! :)
My first child, a daughter, was born around the same time as your baby! So I am absolutely LOVING baby woodworking related videos! Thank you so much! My wife enjoyed it as well, as we do all of your videos!
Electric bassinet with a 2 speed manual gear box , this baby is officially the coolest on the block . Congrats man.
What a sweet baby. I can only imagine what wonderful toys and gadgets their life will be filled with. So lucky to have a Dad like you. Congrats.
hahaha! I love the emergency mode!
I assumed there would be a baby project soon since one small person changes everything in a home. Congratulations to you and Rachel.
WOW! What a treat to be your kid. Between the motor unit and those clever rocker attachments what a wonderful way to grow up...
man that baby looks so much like you.
There is a lifetime of interesting projects to be built FOR and WITH that child.
I like the way you contain baby within a cardboard sub-bassinet to preclude nocturnal baby migration..
+Geoff Brown Wow, impressive english mister!
thanks, its my home language ;)
+Geoff Brown That is put in there so that they can mail the kid to relatives for the week end.

you never seize to amaze.! not only is she just too adorable but lucky to have a father like you. and mom.

+Matthias Wandel depending on the material youre cutting and the cutters youre using. most can cut through softer aluminums like butter. and you can always use a cnc machine then you dont have to do any of the work!
+KurtleTheTurtle But that makes it boring!
I would like to see him do some metal work
I, for one, would pay good money to ride that bassinet in high speed....you both are wonderful parents! Much love.
this is the first time I've heard you had a baby, congratulations Mathias!

fantastic matt , this is wood working at its peak , practical , and
you are a good dad ,
My wife said he must of been in charge of rocking 1 time. Nothing wrong with mechanical advantage. Great job, baby and rocking device.
I swear wood workers and machinists make the best parents, they never are out of ideas to help raise children and entertain them.
Great Dad! Thanks for taking time out to make a wonderful program.
Your limitless imagination and intuitive way of doing things never ceases to amaze me. Keep up the great work and great videos!
What a lovely daughter Mathias, could not help but to mention You covered that flat belt pully on the band saw build but that was several years ago.lol, do another thou, always love a Your vids, congrats again on the Baby Girl

Wow well done! Baby totally loved it. I think the little bit of background noise that it provides is probably soothing as well.

Congratulations on becomng a father, Matthias! And as a new grandfather, I will definately be stealing this idea for my new grandbaby!
When you say things like "from an old 8 track player" you remind me why I subscribed.
Impressive build Matthias. Now if you and Cremona get together.... you would produce inspiring products. Stuff for babies is a great place to start.
wow great job. I was thinking of trying to remote control my baby's stroller while I walked him around my house for hours and hours but time flies by and now hes 4 :)
Matthias congratulations on the recent addition to your family. I love all the wonderful ideas and videos. Keep up the good work.
Awesome idea, now i just gotta convince my wife to let me attach a motor to the bassinet, keep up the good work Matthias
You made a life saver for every woodworker dad in the world
Omg, I laughed so hard at the end when you put the highest speed. You'r the boss Matthias
Matthias I enjoy all your projects. You're pretty witty
I can see a whole new line of plans since you two had a baby. Baby feeder, baby changer, self cleaning wooden diapers, wooden toys. I am sure a crib has already been made from recycled furniture. I can't wait for the next video.

+Scott Cable That was hilarious!
Tucker Wilkes Awww, that's cute
+Tucker Wilkes Or... he is trolling you...
Are you going to do a build video of the baby?
Lolita's Garden I don't think that'd be quite suitable for RUclips
Onlyfans didn't exist 6 years ago
I cannot tell you how much money i spent on batteries for our rocker when my twin girls were babies..so many sleepless nights..great idea!
Hey, this project is viewed on Core77! congrats! having my third child on the way, I felt so related to this project :)
+krnxemb That's cool. They'd actually approached me about making videos just for them, but I don't have time to make even more videos.

were did u find the baby
+donald laisure (73SuperGlide62) He made that, too.
+donald laisure (73SuperGlide62) I think Matthias and Rachel put it together themselves. Not sure if scratch-built or kit-bashed, but definitely a collaborative project.
+donald laisure (73SuperGlide62) Found it at a yard sale perhaps.
Super glue garage sale
But pretty sure no CAD was used in this process.
Years from now, you will show this video to your child, and she will realize how much she is loved.
Congrats on the new addition!!! Also another great project, Thanks!!
Its going to be fun watching this kid grow up. We need to start a pool on when the kid's first woodshop project video will appear.
This is awesome.
Was nice to hear the thought process during the build.
You are a wood wizard! I always enjoy your presentations and wry sense of humor.
If you had one, you could use an old windshield wiper motor which does the rocking motion itself and is super quite as well.
first and foremost.. congratulations on the newest wood artist on the block..
and that is a rocking idea....
awesome modifications, Matthias. congrats on the baby btw!
I'll have to build something like this for my next baby. Congratulations on your new family member!
I am a proud Dad of 3 and we used a thing called a rocking chair and actually held them. Some of the happiest days of my life.
I envy your baby, Mattias. She will be a full-blown Maker by the time she hits kindergarten!
You always build some of the neatest things. Congratulations on the baby..
Very cool Matthias!! You must have a huge box of motors to use!!
Happy Napping!! W.
I'm very glad you added a fan to that motor.. I've had one of the old ones (before thermal fuses) just about catch fire!
Beautiful baby. A little bit afraid of the wires under the baby bed. Anyway, it works! You are a genius. Saludos desde Argentina.
Nicely done Mattias. I took the easy way out and just wired a power supply to a battery operated swing.
I really enjoy your videos Mathias, but was surprised to see you use drywall screws in everything as I've not been a fan of them except for drywall, then I watched your video on screws last week and I will be starting to use them a lot from now on, so thanks for that. Greetings from Scotland.
You have the brain power to take over the world. You make the smartest videos online!
You will probably be one of the coolest dad ever! :D
Should have made that 8 years ago😳 Nice rocking Matthias👍 Wounder what rig Izzy is going to make😱
Wow. finally some useful staff. :) I bet it's not going to get as many views as marble shooter or slinky escalator. Lucky girl! She will have tons of very cool and very custom toys and things built for her. Please, create some more videos of these things!
You are so amazingly ingenius ! Can't wait for the series of wooden toys you are surely going to build for your child..
Wow what a brilliant mind! Love your videos. Congrats on your baby. Now to find a way to clone yourself!
This kid is gonna have some awesome school project builds and get the best marks
Man, how I wish I have had one of those. The hours I spent rocking the cradle with my foot... :)
I like the rockers that fit inside the bassinets' wheels. Clever!
Fantastic! Congrats on being a father...best job in the world

The way you index the casters to the rockers is lovely. But is the baby enjoying the ride?
