This is not the same transfer as the streaming content from some 2-3 months back on streaming services. The main file is 80 GB. The TrueHD is incredible.

Hes comparing it to the kaleidescape, the main file in that thing must be 100gb+
It would be very interesting to do a direct comparison review of both the original Top Gun movie and this film, both on 4K Blu-ray. I purchased the original Top Gun on 4K disc the other day and was absolutely blown away with the quality of the audio mix. Levels at every single part of that film were set perfectly and the mix was as flawless as I've ever heard from any film released on 4K Blu-ray to date. If you have a really resolving set up (or a great pair of high-quality headphones) go back and listen to the audio on that original film. You will be absolutely blow away at how spot on it is.
Best movie to come out in a while. and one of the best 4k crisp start to finish on 4k disc. One of the few sequels that I would rate higher than the original
October 31st can't get here fast enough! I preordered from Amazon a week after I seen it in the Theater, I can't wait to watch it over and over again like the 1st one, and see and here it on my setup!
I can't even begin to imagine how much the 4k and blu-ray is going to make in sales!
You should be so lucky you have a copy already!!
It's already out on blue ray in best buy Just not 4k
The review I’ve been waiting for!
Thank you Shane.
I like the bubble effect created by the atmos mix. It's up there with No Time to Die & Dune.
It is looking like a mix mostly designed for a 7.1.4 home setup. If you start to go beyond 7.1.4, the majority static mix becomes a problem for those with larger home theater systems because many times the extra speakers remain silent.
Great review as always Shane thanks!!!
They used it simply for the emotional as well as the exclusivity factor. It was mostly to showcase the value of Kscape at CEDIA. "See the lossless version first on Kscape". My kscape sales grew after CEDIA.. JS 😏
Great review as always Shane.
Wow that is a pretty big drop for the re-evaluated score for the audio. Shane is a tough grader.
Yes and sad sad news....I agree the digital release was aweful for audio (yes i know streaming will always be a step down..but it was NOT good at all for the bass department). Bummed
I agree with you Shane audio could have been better Michael Bay should have done the audio 😂 great review as always ya already know!!!
I got two monolith 16s, I thought the rumble of the jets were crazy in a good way. The last mission had a lot of panning audio with the Sam missiles firing and big impactful explosion. Demo material for my system. 🤷
A couple missiles panning and loud planes don't make an entire movie demo worthy.
@@therealshanelee No one said the entire movie. Usually demos are related to scenes. Ready player one, kong scene, Etc etc etc. That last mission, Demo worthy.
@@gaurd3 even so, let's not confuse anyone now. Even those scenes aren't that good.
@@therealshanelee I got the movie based on another review that said the audio was reference quality. I was disappointed. In one scene when the crowd at the bar is cheering, it was so blaring and uncomfortable to listen to. My HT precludes using Atmos speakers so I'm doing 7.2. My opinion anyway. Also, for some reason, one of my 2 subs made a popping sound at least 3 times during the movie. 2 of them occurred during high end jet sounds, not during bass parts.
@@mystic7splace I wouldn't not buy the movie based solely on the sound. It's still a fantastic looking movie and enjoyable as well.
Great movie, great transfer...I can't stop watching it.
I can't wait to rewatch this one! It was such a pleasant suprise!
Just found your channel, and glad I did. Great review.
👍👍
How about Maverick's voice in the control room squawk box during the opening test flight coming right out of the height channels!
IMAX aspect ratio on 4K disc, imagine that.

I think this and Ambulance is about the same, 4K crisp! Both are great movies.
Ambulance was a great looking and sounding movie but the movie was far from great
@@moveezy5591 Well you have your opinion which is fine but I thought the movie was great.
@@michaelsmithdjsmitty4538 indeed just wasn't my cup of tea
Hey, I am with you. I thought Ambulance was a great time.
Tough to find people who didn’t like Ambulance.
I seen it twice in theaters, got it on apple 4k the day it got released and just put in pre order at best buy. NOW THIS is how you make a movie #talktomegoose
Just saw this yesterday when the disk arrived. While video is impeccable I did feel sound was a bit lacking and your review is the only one that picked up on this. I was expecting more in the base department and also just didn't feel the sound putting you IN the movie like you do on other movies. Dune, original Jurassic Park and others that I have watched recently had more presence. Still a great movie.
Most folks don’t have good enough systems to hear a difference or they only care about the video only.
I can't wait for my pre-order to show up! Do the studios send you discs to review? So if an Atmos/DTS:X mix only has sounds from specific speakers (the same way 5.1 works) instead of moving around the soundstage regardless of number of speakers, that hurts the audio score? Was there more than that that hurt the audio score? Or was that alone enough to knock it down 2 points? Thanks!
It's based on how it sounds not what the mix looks like.
u should review the first one 4k
Thanks Shane. DISAPPOINTED in the atmos mix. Was expecting more of a dynamic mix...VERY disappointed. BUT, will be ready to purchase when available.
Great review Shane. I had gone to see this movie in an Atmos theatre and found the height activity to be mediocre at best.
Height was sparing, but the side and rear bed layer was incredible.
I was very disappointed with the Atmos mix, aside from the radio communication at a few points, there was very little top speaker information. In fact my atmos speakers were almost quiet most of the film.. Had this been released by sony it would have sounded awesome..
I use an arendal 1723 7.2.4
Can't wait to watch this on my 120" cinegray screen and Epson 5050UB, I haven't seen the movie yet, arrives from Amazon on Monday.
Hey Shane, love your style and approach to the episode, Denon x3800h 11.4 chan. 8k receiver setup and review. I just bought the x4800h, boy is there manual long winded. Now the version Web u1 you were using was great, the only problem is l can't compare it the Denons 350 page owners manual, because l haven't a table or p.c. l was wondering if you can do a x4800h version, but with out the web h1 owners manual, just using the Denon's 350 page manual, as a guide to their setup. I hope you can do it in a shorter and easier way to understand the setup, just like the easier Denons x3800 you did. It would be very helpful to others in the same situation. Keep up the good work and lll keep on watching. Sincerely City Steve. Oh, and lll then buy a subscription...lol
Hi Shane. Good review. Picture Quality is awesome. As for Audio Quality, i would give it a 9.0, it's a good audio mix if consider it as 5.1/7.1. It's still full of bass and all ear level speakers are always active. IT'S NOT DISNEY ATMOUSE FORTUNATELY.
It's not a 5/7 channel mix. It's an atmos mix. Good bass also doesn't make an audio mix good. There's other factors involved that I mentioned in the video.
@@therealshanelee Hi Sir, I know it's Atmos and I totally agree with your score on Atmos track. I'm not someone really fancy of deep and infra-sonic type of guy, I'm more of a loud and active bass type of guy. Since it's lower score as Atmos track, in my opinion it's kinda good track if we consider it as 5.1/7.1 track. Hope you know what I mean.
The audio track on this disc is absolutely incredible so I'm kind of surprised by the low-ish score. While I think the bass on discs like Interstellar and Dune might be stronger, this mix remains incredibly balanced throughout regardless of what is going on. Granted, I'm watching the standard Blu-Ray with TrueHD 5.1, but I honestly can't think of a disc with an overall better mix than this!
I've shown on the Atmos viewer that there isn't much happening except for a few little scenes. Nothing special about this at all.
@@therealshanelee in that regard, your score makes sense and seems fair. I've yet to upgrade to Atmos so my assessment is based on watching in 5.1.
Picture quality was brilliant i like the audio more than most i think the dialogue was perfect and it had so very low lfe at times
Hey Shane, when you reviewed the Kaleidescape / digital stream, you mentioned the Max CLL is 495 nits and Max fall is 492 nits. Whereas on the 4k blu ray, the Max CLL is 617 nits and Max fall is 496 nits. Does that mean there is definitely a noticeable difference in brightness between the disc and the streaming versions?
I noticed that myself which I was gonna mention in my follow-up Kaleidescape video. But no I didn't notice any increase in brightness with the 4k BD. Both kscape and digital have the same info.
SAD SAD news Shane! ...This was one of the best movie theaters expeirences I've had (dolby cinema) in the past 5-10 years. THEN the digital of course was VERY VERY lacking is depth for bass (sure you can boost things, but it just wasn't good). I NEEDED this to be a new audio reference disk since the film is fantastic. Sounds like sadley that is not going to be the case. Shane has alway been pretty spot on for bass response vs. my own set-up (2 PSA S3012's, 1 PSA 3600, 3 Crowson actuators under the couch).... Thanks for the fantastic review though as always!
I love it do i need to double dip i got it on digital
Come on man. The movie is great and watching the 4K at home is awesome. It's a no brainier to buy this if you have a HT. It's a "strong recommend" to buy the disc
Saw this on HD blu-ray with 120hz on and it was fantastic! One of the best image quality on HD.
120hz does not much to a 24 movie
Already got the movie digitally, but I will definitely be getting this when the 4K Bluray is out. Movie was awesome and it looked great in IMAX and digital 4K.
Discard the digital version... Disc 💿 is far superior!!
@@dr.tissonjob5707 saw it in 4k at amc and liked it better than top gun 1
@@dr.tissonjob5707 very true. But they did a really impressive job with the digital version as it actually retains the imax sequences which is usually exclusive to disc formats.
I streamed it on Vudu and thought the audio was a bit disappointing, especially the bass. I was hoping it would be improved on the physical disc but it sounds like it wasnt. Kind of bummed but still a great movie!
The sound was a bit underwhelming in 2 different theaters I saw it as well
I haven’t found a disc in over 2 years that has had that great of audio. I also find most Atmos discs to be lack luster when compared to a well done DTS disc.
You haven't been watching a lot of movies if you haven't heard a great atmos mix lately.
@@therealshanelee I didn't say Atmos was bad, I do think it is over rated. I buy almost every physical release weekly and have a 60k theater. Maybe my standards are too high, but most have rushed audio where they simply let the decode go and never clean it up. To each their own though.
Hey Shane
RRR is streaming in 4K Atmos on Netflix. Would love to know your thoughts!
Cheers
I streamed it on my 150” screen on a 9.3.4 Dolby Atmos system and withheld judgement on all qualities until I can see it on a physical disc without compression, but your review on the audio portion sounds disappointing. My only gripe is the changing aspect ratio back and forth between 2.39.1 and 1.90:1 which heavily noticeable on a 150” screen. I wish I had the choice of setting it to only one aspect ratio and then sticking with it. Otherwise, incredible great movie.
Just watched it last night. Yeah, the sound is very good but not quite there to the top tier level. In comparison, I think Ambulance wins in terms of overall picture and sound experience. Excellent movie for sure though.
Shane, how did you get early copy? Was this given to reviewers only as demo?
He has contacts takes a long time but he’s a trusted reviewer that’s why he gets it earlier.
Hey Shane, what speakers are you currently using in your setup. You have listed the B&W in the video description, but that seems to be outdated because the speakers that are behind you in this video seem to be another brand.
Nice catch. I've updated it.
@@therealshanelee Thanks for the reply. One more question. What are you using for height channels? The PSB speakers don’t have a ceiling mount speaker in their PWM lineup.
@@therealshanelee Please don't leave me hanging here. I just want to know what speakers are you using for height channels at the moment or what speakers would you pair with the PSB PWM to use as height channels seeing as they don't have Atmos speakers in their PWM lineup. Thank you for the help.
Hi Shane. Want to ask 1 thing how you got TOPGUN MAVRICK 4K bluray. But when i reached to buy. It shows 30 Oct 2022 available. PREORDER.
on Amazon the sound is 480KB DVD typre PCM. although you also given the link. its still show PRE-order 4k bluray. Point is do you get 4K disc also for testing.
Start a RUclips channel and review movies. Get a large subscriber following and they'll send you movies too review early. Simple.
Hey Shane 9 above for audio as you gave 9.1 for the digital stream. This is audio far better!!
I gave Kaleidescape a 9.1 originally which is not a digital stream.
@@therealshanelee U feel the Kalediscape version is similar to the disc or superior?
Both should ideally be same right?
Absolutely spot on review by Shane! I have the same experience. Soundmix is quite poor on this. Video is very good. Shane got it bang on correct in his review
Did you watch it on a scope screen? Do you just have to suck up the imax scenes or is there an option for scope only ?
It should have had a scope ratio only version on another disc, but sadly, no.
@@dan_hitchman007 Thanks for letting us know.
I have not seen it, but am looking to get the DVD. I noticed that there is a 4k version but then noticed that the 4k is Blueray. I do not have a Blueray player. So does the DVD have a average/decent graphics quality or above average graphics quality? Or do I get the 4k version and try to find a cheap blueray player?
I'm excited to pick it up I'm just sad that it doesn't come with a standard bluray, because I don't always have access to a 4k player (I like the combo packs, I've used the standard blurays quite a bit)
not only that but no dvd 😢
Hard to choose TG: Maverick or DUNE for reference demo of the year. They are both epic!!
Such a hard choice. The fact that Dune didn’t include imax scenes was a big big let down. If it had imax it would be an all time top reference demo let alone for the year. Even then though Dune still is fantastic demo disc. Maverick has the imax but not the best audio when compared to Dune. I’m a big audio guy with a solid atmos set up so I’m partial to audio tracks so I would have to go with Dune. Plus the movie itself is fantastic.
In the theaters this movie sound amazing
Since Paramount is supposedly a supporter of IMAX ENHANCED, they should have made this a IE disc. They used the IMAX aspect ratio but used Dolby for the audio? SMH
People love IMAX, but they also love Dolby Atmos. Best of both worlds I guess.
@@notsorandumusername dolby is everywhere
Would you say Dune is probably THE sound reference disc? I feel like the Revenant could be visual reference.
4K crispy
Shane how can I fit the imax aspect ratio to my 2:35.1?
Hit the aspect ratio button till it crops it.
rooster rooster where is 5 generation fighter smokin and the air amazing i loved
If this were done by Sony, maybe we see those scores get a few + points.
Problem when you have 6 height channels (as in many movies sadly): Only the Top Middles are active, the other 4 are silent. So much potential wasted.... 😞
Make a preset using only 4 heights and one for 6.
Loved this movie, thought it was a lot of fun….
Ambulance was kind of stupid but so much fun with a lot of laughs at the same time… 😊
I have it on AppleTV… I thought the sound was garbage for the kind of movie it was. Midway was way better sounding. I also worked on the flight deck with F18s and they shake your whole body when on the catapults. Bass severely lacking in this movie
They used a real F-14 for all the shots of it on the ground and on the carrier deck, they were able to borrow one from a museum. I loved this film saw it 10 times in theaters. Saw it in IMAX and AVX with Dolby Atmos it was insane in the theater
Thank god we get the IMAX Scenes on the 4K Disc it was bound to happen as the Digital Release had the IMAX Scenes also
Since the IMAX shots were protected for a scope ratio It would have been better if the home video version was scope all the way through.
@@dan_hitchman007 amen to that
@@dan_hitchman007 Why? Clearly IMAX was the intended format, so of course you want the full screen scenes.
@@notsorandumusername There's a difference between a format and cinematographic composition. The IMAX footage was shot for scope ratio extraction because other non IMAX screens were scope all the way through.
@@dan_hitchman007 yes, but IMAX was always the preferred format - as the creators intended it. Fullscreen on the 4K disc comes closest to that. I can understand shifting aspect ratios are annoying with a fixed Cinemascope sized screen.
I saw the movie after your first review and was wondering what was the hype about the atmos in this movie? I found it quite average and not all comparable to mixes from warner action titles.
Oh no. Only 8 for audio. I expected spectacular atmos track. Now it is not very impressive. I guess I still get a copy as I like the movie a lot.
I personally give 9.0 for this Atmos. It's overall still far better than Disney Atmouse even though there's slight lacking in deep bass. Overall audio is still full of bass.
I’m unclear, was the sound at least less compressed sounding than the Kaleidoscape?
? It's explained in the video
@@therealshanelee You downgraded the sound from 9.1 to 8.0. Just wanted to understand if the Kaleidoscape has the same audio quality bitrate as the disc? Comparing it to Midway today, while a good movie, was a bit abrupt now considering it’s release several years ago.
Such a shame it's not in True IMAX... What a waste of picture frames. Yeah, this is a movie that should be Bass heavy period. I guess they spend most on those 6 Sony cameras lol Smh...Still can't wait to see it though..
A 30 Hz filter has got to be there because they are optimizing for soundbars. There's no other way around it. Dang it all to heck. What another wasted opportunity to mix with the benefits of Dolby Atmos 3D positional audio. As it seems, the best mixes seem to come from their short Dolby Labs demo pieces and a handful of films, many of which are Sony Atmos remixes such as "The Guns of Navarone." The storm at sea is amazing in fully unlocked Atmos.
could you please elaborate the 30Hz filter issue? That's ridiculous if true.
@@pulDag They rolled off frequency effects below 30 Hz.
I have a sony htc 800 that lacks atmos but it supports dolby true hd dts ma and of course pcm
@@kascnef You will be decoding the core of the Atmos track, which has been bass filtered.
There is no way there is a 30 Hz filter on this movie, at least not on the Blu-Ray TrueHD mix. The bass I was getting was strong all the way to 20 hz and at levels very close to the likes of Dune. Not sure if the audio mix on the 4K disc is any different.
Cinemascope IS 35mm. That guy doesn't seem to know much about film. Maybe he is confusing how CinemaScope is anamorphic and uses the full 4-perf height of the frame.
I know right. Can't believe they let that guy direct the movie! 😂😂
@@therealshanelee If the Director's Guild gets wind of this, he'll never work in this town again. Or any other town. Well, maybe as an Uber driver or something. Actually they probably won't even hire him after this.
Any front wide content?
Two weeks before anyone else🔥❤🔥❤🔥. Hope you feel better.
Dang…I mean sure, I’ll still get it, but a little saddened to see how static the mix is. Come on Hollywood!
It's still kinda decent. Do a review.
Damn, this review is so early and it's so far away the UHD comes out.
Hope there will be a pure 2.39:1 4k version. I have a cinemascope screen and I hate when the movie flips between 2.39:1 and Imax....
Unfortunately, I doubt there will be. I hear that the IMAX shots are mainly 2.39:1 framed, so if you have good masking to soak up the image spill, it should be fairly okay. IMAX on home video is pretty much a gimmick anyway. There's no way you're going to get the same experience unless you have a HUGE screen at home.
@@dan_hitchman007 Yes, fortunatly I have black velvet masking which sucks up most of the light. :) And I agree, Imax is very gimmicky.
@@dan_hitchman007 Yeah. And most of the better projectors have a masking system
Watched the 4k yesterday. Visually it’s amazing, but yeah, the sound is still lacking. It had so much potential to be aurally sexual.
4k is crap compared to superscreen, dolby atmos and massive screen, i love it🙂
Shane: Audio is “somewhat underwhelming” with a revised score of 8.0. Yow 😳
People in the comments always expecting the perfect 4K disc always make me laugh. Yes the Atmos track is flawed but this is the best looking and sounding film to be released this year! People get way too carried away imo.
why flawed
It's most definitely not the best sounding this year.

@@therealshanelee ok. how about the regular bluray
Good Movie.
AVNirvana has the Atmos and Bass an A+. I've had the same impression in my dedicated room. I think it's your room, not the disc.
I think both you guys need a hearing check.
@@therealshanelee AV Nirvana created REW. I think they're a pretty good source.
Dune has 100% better bass. As for Atmos went to cinema just for this and was totally disappointed. Basically even in 5.1 is quite underwhelming, so many missed opportunities! For example that Ed Harris fly-over, zero height activity and sooo little bass (and not very deep like 50hz). Yes quality of sound is very good but that is not my issue.

I have a question. Will the premiere version of Top Gun Maverick for sure have these Imax scenes shot in the full screen ?. I really care about it, and I have already heard that the version that hit the record was deprived of this effect.
I'm guessing you haven't watched this video. Otherwise you wouldn't have asked this question 🤔
At home I have only 5.1 so with big expectations I went to theater and bought a ticket for atmos one (not all theaters have atmos here). As I thought this must be an atmos reference movie for sure. When Maverick was taking of with the experimental plane I was prepared to be blown away by the flyby over Ed Harris. Omg I was sooo disappointed it was like nothing, not even some crazy deep bass. Then throughout the whole movie very little height channel activity. I would fire all the people working on the audio ! So much potential was wasted here it's not even funny..
Anybody notice at 1.35 into the movie
Just as maverick looks up at the sam missiles
They judder as if the graphics card has malfunctioned
I swap one copy for another
Played it on my Sony 95k and on a Samsung TV and it is still present
For a multi million dollar movie
That's a school boy error
I thought Top Gun sounded better in my 5.2.4 setup than maverick in almost every way. F18s sound almost neutered compared to the prior films f14s. Just my opinion. Not a bad use of atmos. But im gonna hook up my 7.1 analog multi channel input and decode in the player and rewatch. Im willing to sacrifice 2 channels and a sub to see if there is more punch as i found with Heat.
Which amp and player do you use?

If you take away all the quiet parts of the movie. This movie is a solid 10 demo
The Atmos is subpar. I've objectively shown it in this video.
I personally think Atmos in general is subpar and overrated. Not worth it. Just go for the subs, front, side and rear channels. @@therealshanelee
Yet people were blown away at Cedia with the "reference" Top Gun demos. I guess with enough $ invested in a system you can convince yourself you can do better than the actual source material. 😉
Blue meters and a lot of bass is a magical thing.
Imax enhanced has become the new digital 3d. If the movie goes full screen for the imax scenes you really can’t tell unless the cinematographer knows what he’s doing like the one who shoots for Christopher Nolan and the Batman movies.
I disagree strongly, in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises the differences between the 35mm part and the 15perf70 shots is staggering. It makes 35mm look mushy in comparison and the color grading in 35mm isn't up to par either. Only when Nolan switched to 65mm rather than 35 and combined with IMAX did this improve. But shooting of film was not feasible for this movie where they actually wanted to capture in-flight in the cockpit so they had to go with the digital Venice. And why not? Both Venice and Arri Alexa 65 give IMAX a good run for its money, especially with a 4K DI.
@@notsorandumusername so you agree with me that the shots in Dark knight and dark knight rises are an improvement and obvious over the other parts of the movie?!
@@Laissez_Faire So you agree with me that this has nothing to do with 'the cinematographer knows what he's doing' but simply with using 2 very different camera's? If Wally Pfister had shot on Venice, Dark Knight would have looked good in all scenes - not just the IMAX ones. If Claudio Miranda had used 35mm film for the non-IMAX scenes in Maverick, they wouldn't have looked at good as the rest as the movie. So the real question here is: why do you think it's a good idea to have some scenes look muddy and some truly great (i.e.: Dark Knight) when you can have ALL scenes look truly great - like Maverick does? Dark Knight is a fantastic movie, but it would have been even better if the non-Imax scenes were filmed in 65mm rather than 35. Nolan wanted that, but it wasn't feasible logistically back then. It's a good thing nowadays it is (Dunkirk, Tenet, No Time To Die)
@@notsorandumusername when I’m talking about the cinematographer is the amazing shots where it takes full advantage of the sensor and lenses and the shots look “grand”. Like when you watch the Hateful 8 shot on 70mm. The film has amazing shots that you can’t get with a 35mm sensor, 8k or 20k, Doesn’t matter. When watching Maverick I didn’t see any of that. Maybe I gotta watch it again
@@notsorandumusername but yes, I agree the whole movie should just be shot in 65Mm and keep the same aspect ratio throughout the movie
I want that Best Buy steelbook
This movie is a fresh air nowdays but i have to disagree about some indoor shots, too underexposed subjects (it's a stupid trand last movies adopted), so Maverick suffer bad photography and this bugs me a lot.
😉
I personally found the Atmos audio was rather disappointing
Why has it taken so long to come on disk
Because it's still making money at the theaters.
Won't even be out for another month
@@32toddv October 31 it comes out.
I’m getting a release date from Amazon for the steelbook November 15 dame !
@@oldschooljr4127 what about dvd netflix
What’s so special about full screen IMAX scenes when regular free-to-air TV has been full screen for years??
People like not seeing black bars.
@@therealshanelee I meant why is there so much hype around IMAX when the end result (no black bars) is essentially the same as normal TV?
From a 9.1 down to an 8.0. Come on, man. It wasn’t that bad. 8.8 ok. 8.5, maybe. You dumped the audio down too low.
Curious did you find the bass lacking at all? I haven’t watched the stream yet, saw it in a AMC prime Dolby theater and thought it was incredible. I have 2 15inch HSU subs ready to rock for this movie wondering if I should apply the BEQ to it to bump the bass… what subs are you running?
@@Paranimal86 The was rumble and shake in the flying scenes and with the explosions but not as much as other movies. There could have been more bass.
