As a kid I used to build these things. Now that I'm older I now drive them. Hard plastic steering wheel, had to use drivers gloves in the wintertime. Great video, spot on for detail. Thanks for sharing.
Great work Doug! I built two of these back in early 2012. One in black and another one in white with black chassis. The black unit has a red Cummins NTC 350 and the white one has the typical beige colored engine. I really enjoyed painting both of them. I want to build additional AMT trucks especially the White Western Star kit.
Had this kit since 2012, got it primed on the tree's and put it up. You need to get some CB antennas. I had also bought some chains and brake lines to go to the trailer. On the 5th wheel you can use some KY and let it dry then paint it a flat black. A small string will work on the drivers side to pull down for the air horn. I still got a couple cans of the Testor's John Deere green, they stopped making it years ago. I bought the orange cabover and trailer around the same time along with 4 different trailers. Put all that in my stash. I may get to it one day. I still have a sealed Movin' On Truck from the tv show.
I drove a few s Autocars, Brockways, even GMC in their day. They were what construction trucks were. They didn't even have a Pete or KW dealer in my area until the late 70's. Of course Mack but I didn't drive my 1st one until 78,, Still could care less about the so called big 2.
Thanks for your quick reply. I resolved the problem with my AMT/ERTL Transtar Eagle truck. I guess I just panicked... :^)...by the way you should build this truck. It's a fabulous kit and I'm half way through it and very impressed with the detail and quality. If one would be tempted to build a true show truck, this would be the one. I personally don't have the skills for that, so I build shelf (display) models. I really enjoy your reviews and again, thank you.
Is the white Elmer’s glue strong enough to hold the windows in ? I’m always struggling with that part of the build when the windows are separate pieces.
CC, Generally speaking, yes it will hold. Often the windows are trapped into position by tghe interior. But if theres no pressure on them they should stay if there;'s enough glue. M/S Kristal Klear is a little stronger and BSI has released a new clear adhesive too! -Doug
I have technical question regarding the truck, i would build short nosed version my problem is where to cut main frame? engine bay area or tail? Thanks
NB, I don't have the model any more to know for sure but I would think a straight portion of the frame in the engine bay would be a logical point for the modification. Thanks for watching and, please subscribe if you haven't already to help us reach more modelers! -Doug
@@RightOnReplicas so your point is cut the frame part of the engine bay? if so the axle need to be repositioned backwards i think. and you've got a subscriber here! no worries!
Yes, if the the nose was lengthened , the front end was lengthened, If they extended it from only the axle forward the nose wouldn't be that long. The best thing to do is mock it up and see where it would be best to make the chop. -Doug
@@RightOnReplicas I've figured out that the best way is move cab forward and cut the firewall then make doghouse inside of the cab and chop rear part of the frame next ~ my plan is to make White 9000 from the "Maximum Overdrive" movie (old air starter powered wrecker from the gas station scene)
I remember all the AMT kits, Loved them all but the Diamond reo was my favorite. I built it as a day cab pulling the gravel trailer. If I build another I would swap in a 318 Detroit from a Astro and aluminum wheels. IMO They made the wheelbase way to short. That also would be corrected. Im glad round 2 re-issued.
DS, I'm with you there. It's great that the manufacturers are giving us these old kits again. Thanks for checking in and if you haven't already done so please subscribe so that we can reach more modelers! -Doug
I did that model. The sleeper 'points' did not match at all to the rest of the tractor, so I had to stick with the day cab version, but it was pretty nice to build.
great review mate as always. One thing though, for me I'd prefer not to see the completed build at the end rather than the start. just opinion though. keep up the good work!
Colin - I'm always happy to get feedback like that but are you saying you prefer to see the final photos at the beginning or the end of the review? -Doug
Glen, Interesting application there. Thanks for sharing and if you find our channel helpful, please subscribe if you haven't already, to help us continue our mission to inspire more modelers! -Doug!
A word to the wise. The process, during assembly, of aligning all three of the main sub-assemblies, (hood, cab, sleeper) is made simpler if prior to, you work a lot of slack into each assembly. In other words, enlarge each point of attachment to give yourself some wiggle room. Your going to need it to get things to line up. The White Western Star AMT kit is almost identical except for the grille and badging...jus sayin. :^)
Dish - Well, that depends. Diamond Reo made this type of cab from the 60's until the went bankrupt in '74. They were bought out and continued to be made until 2010. So pick a decade and the answer is, yes! -Doug

One of my 1st jobs had one w/o the sleeper pulling a trailer dump.. nice truck, better looking than any Pete or KW

Excellent review, I sure enjoyed watching it, the model looks great also, cant wait to watch another, thanks much!!!!!
Ken, thanks much - enjoy! -Doug
What color did you use? It is a really nice color.
WH, this was just a custom mix of blue, silver and rose until it turned out looking nice to my eye! -Doug
It is a awesome color. I really liked it on the model. Made it look like one of a kind. :)
My late Father did all the Art work for these body styles. I have the original art work and Catalogs

Sir, have you built AMT/ERTL kit #629, Transtar 4300 Eagle truck? Having a problem and maybe you could help.
EZ, I'm sorry but we haven't gotten to that one yet. If you describe the issue one of the readers might be able to help though! -Doug

Would this go on long hauls or local hauls?
MS, Equipped with a sleeper and dual fuel tanks this would more likely have been used as a long haul rig! -Doug

would aluminium foil tape work aswell?
Cam - Generally not as it is much thicker and won't get into the contours! -Doug
The aluminium foil tape isn’t really working as well.
another great build brother.....thanks for the reviews
Thanks Gary - I love this! -Doug

Thanks Doug, great review/build.

Thx Vaughn - you're too kind! -Doug
I got one, it is a good kit and very detailed

In special to all the pieces straight and even.

I have the frame/suspension about done. The paint will be blue

It would look much better if you give it a wash over so all the lines are darkened....

I think this is a mid 70's model to late 70's. The 80 model has square head lights
