- I just couldn't leave well enough alone. I had to know how the spring action pliers worked. So, I took them apart to show everyone, and now you get to watch me struggle to put them back together. Fun times!
Wouldn’t it be nice if they sold these pliers separately?
Couldn't agree more but we'll most likely never see that from leatherman
Wave++ coming soon.
Are you okay? We haven't seen you in 3 months?!
Ben casually disassembling $1k leathermans. Truely the 🐐.
Well when you put it that way…..it doesn’t sound like such a good idea anymore. Lol
@txtoolcrib speaking of GOAT did you buy one of their tools to review?
I haven’t yet, caught some of Dominic’s videos on it though. I need to get one ordered. It’s definitely interesting, and modular design is something people have been asking other companies to implement for a long time. Eventually I’ll get one.
that would be a cool tool. Just change whatever whenever. Leatherman would be beat if it weren't for price
@JacobThomas-kk1jk Time will tell. Right now it still looks very much like a $100 prototype imo.
Did NOT expect that string trick to work but you made it work :D thanks for taking it apart and showing us how they did it, I was also curious about the mechanism
Sometimes I get lucky.
Lol, I'm glad you did this instead of me.
A serious pain in the ass! Fun times!
My complements! Guess you will not not be doing that again anytime soon! 😊
Prooooooobably not!
This is the best Multitool channel.
Thanks for sharing. I also wondered how exactly the spring action worked. Now, thanks to you, I see how.
Miss your videos, hope you make more soon 👍👍
Love the string, what an elegant solution
Thanks for making this video. I had another multitool with the same spring loaded mechanism that I had taken apart at one time and I was not able to put it back together. After watching this I made it work using string (truth in advertising, I broke the string three times before I got this to work. And there were clamps and a vice involved in putting the tool together.
Not that I plan on running out and buying one of these anytime soon, but I'm still glad you made this video. Just in case Leatherman ever decides to roll out this feature on their more popular models in the future. At least I'll know where to look for help with how to take it apart and put it back together again. So Cheers to that! 👍
Very daring on N expensive tool. Awesome, thanks.
Thank you Ben, excellent video and now the curiosity won’t kill the cat!
Really interesting to see and much more robust than I imagined.
Taking that very rare and expensive collector item appart , knowing there's a bloody spring in there that's probably gonna be a major pain in the @rse to put back together ... Man that takes some proper self confidence innit !
Self confidence is one thing I have an abundance of, often times to my detriment. 😂
Patiently awaiting your take on the Arc. I’ll probably get one, but it’s similar to the Free. I personally don’t care for the unergonomic handles of the Free and bit exchangers aren’t my preferred driver. It’s tough to top the Spirit.
Arc is out and Ben is silent. We all are waiting!
“Hello Leatherman I need a new fastener for my Garage #5…. How was it damaged? Adjustment yeah adjustment … yes my name…Ben from Tx Tool Crib …hello hello Leatherman …” Seriously thanks for the video and boldly going where no one else is going to go and letting us see the inner workings!
I should try it😊
I considered taking it apart to compare with my Darkside, but I figured the spring would be difficult to get back in place. . .
I’m glad you went through it so I didn’t have to. Much appreciated!
It’s tricky, but doable.
Where’s the Texas grid square placemat? I have no frame of reference on how big these tools are! Thanks for the advice and the moment of pure joy when you got that spring set. I was rooting for you.
Well I’m not at home right now. Doing this on a hotel desktop.
Thank you for this because I was just as curious, just not as adventurous to take mine apart! It’s extremely similar to an out the side automatic knife! Again, thank you! I can hear the nervous relief in your voice when it works out! Love it!
Bold, and I love it. Great video as always, Ben.
I always enjoy your Multitools videos. 👍
Ben's wife walks to his garage. BEN: oh yeah, that tight. Oh yeah, just like that...
TX Tool crib I miss your videos man, when you coming back? Hope all is well with you.
Very ingenuities minded Ben!
Thanks for the video
This is the one video i wanted to see about this tool and i knew you would open it up thanks ben
You’re very welcome. I just had to know how it worked, couldn’t help myself.
Wow what a gutsy move pulling that apart.
My curiosity overwhelmed me.
@@txtoolcrib I am great at pulling things apart it's getting it back together where I have problems.
@@txtoolcrib Oct.17 the ARC release.
Like your videos. Please advise on a leatherman tool. Outside knife with a big straight blade hammer. Bit drive outside also. Removable saw. Awl and pliers with replaceable blades.thank you
I've already disassembled everything else on mine to swap some Free P4 handles and blade onto it so I can carry it without worrying about the Ceracoat. I would have gotten around to opening the pliers out of curiosity, but I'm glad I don't have to now. Springs often turn out to be more tricky to reassemble than you think. It looks just like I thought it would though.
Ben, the true OG. 😂
Usually I found it easier to do this with a vise or use your legs to hold the pliers steady, thanks for sharing.
I’m yelling at my phone “ what are you doin? “ 😂
Why were you yelling? Lol
The things that you can get done with ingenuity and a piece of string!
Hey Ben ? Where have you been ? I hope you’re ok . Miss your videos. 🇺🇸
I really hope they put this in the Arc also. Fingers crossed 🤞
Oh the humanity
There somewhere a LM collector 😢 crying...😂
Wow you really dismantled it!😂
My viewers demand a little extra! 😂
The significant thing taking strength away from the pliers is the removable wire cutter.
They'd be much better using a decent material for the pliers and doing away with the replaceable cutter. It's solving a "not really a" problem and causing others - it is much easier to cut things with the non-replaceable ones and the entire assembly is more robust.
Thank you for your quality content! I did not think about that and filed aluminum with my pocket sharpener stone Fällkniven. Tiny particles stuck in the phores.. I thought I could then clean in with pencil eraser as I always do but I can not clean it.. Any suggestions? Thank you
arc is not spring loaded it appears. but you may be able to seat some opposing neomidium magnets in the handles as a rememdy
First try! First time, every time! Damn that was slick. 3:35
I wonder if the ARC pliers can be modified according to this breakdown to be springloaded. Hardest part would be finding a substitute for that spring
Will this also let you make it not spring loaded 🤔🤔
Absolutely
@@txtoolcrib imo..that reason alone is enough to make all future versions spring-loaded imo
I think that when it was put together it was before the plier heads were in the frame so they could be assembled at 180 degrees and rotated into position. Cheers
@petermoore9504 Well I think the handle pivot area is raised higher above the center pivot plane and will get in the way. I think they will use a specialized gadget for the assembly in the factory.
Ok lets find someone to try this method. Any volunteers out there?
@@1970jeebee the whenever I've taken a leatherman apart it's never gone back together quite right ;)
Do you plan to get an ARC and do a review/comparison?
I was going to take mine to piece to update my 3D model, got me questioning that decision now.
Leatherman is so behind I am glad they are adding things like spring loaded pliers. Their competition have had them for ages. Now if they can offer the enhanced knife steels while keeping prices under control they could claw their way back on top.
Right now I think the chinese have them beat on features and innovation along with demolishing them on price. The chinese have even made strides on making quality tools. Modularity is also a place leatherman isn't great at.
I look forward to them rising to meet their numerous competition.
i shared in your joy when it seated in place, i wounder if in the factory they install the spring before the handles ?
I was surprised it fell in there on the first try. I was very happy about that.
I'm totally new to multi tools having always dismissed them as gimmicky. Between discovering your videos and a changing work situation Ive made the decision that having one is going to be necessary. Do you know of any retailers that let you handle the tools before purchase? I have a fairly good idea of what I want but it'd be really nice to get a hands on before buying. Thanks for any suggestions. Also, have you gotten your hands on an arc yet? I think it's going to be cost prohibitive for me but it's a very intriguing tool. Thanks for your informative and well put together videos!
Just an idea - maybe it would be easier to remove a handle from one of the plier halves? Or is it the metal bits on the actual plier heads that make it impossible to align the spring in wide open position?
Hey Ben. Before or after you diassembled your 005 plier head, did and do your frames close all the way at the plier end? Mine will if I squeeze them. Only springs open about a 1/16” or so, maybe less but it bugs me. Reckon the pivot is to tight from LM directly? I thought tightnen, but feels like it’s bottomed out and the spring action is pretty considerable! Please help!! Thanks, Tommy
I wonder if the pliers would work without the spring for those who are complaining about the potential presence of the spring in the ARC.
They definitely will
The other owners put the Leatherman in a glas vitrine.
Is it possible to make the arc into spring loaded ?
Can you do a wave+ garage 5 comparison? To have an idea for the arc
Hi is there a way to contact you privately have a question regarding the spring loaded pliers...
How much did you end up paying for this 40th anniversary?
Spring action pliers is not my favorite on a multitool
$700
Hitch
Please wear your safety squints!
leatherman should not allow the pliers to be disassembled unless the mechanism is easily reassembled. I think this is a design error.
Looks like the intrusive thoughts won.
