The new BMW 3 Series has a lot to live up to, as its predecessor has been the class leader in the compact executive sector since making its debut in 2005. But the old car wasn't without its flaws, and recent updates to the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class have made the 3 Series look vulnerable. As a result, the latest model couldn't have come soon enough. Designers have worked hard to improve BMW in every area, while there's now a model to suit every taste and budget, including ES, ED, SE, Luxury, Modern and Sport. Bigger, more refined and with a range of efficient new engines, the all-new version is the best yet.

Anybody watching this, concerned about getting a manual, with the so called offset pedals. Don’t be. They are offset, ever so slightly, but not in anyway problematic. I took a manual out on test today, very comfortable car, soon get used to slight difference in feel. Barely noticeable. The way it’s described in some videos, that you feel like your feet are out of the car, or twisted is a massive exaggeration. I went through all the gears nicely, and operated the clutch comfortably. The only noticeably difference is having less room to rest your foot when you’re not accelerating. Go auto if you want an auto, but don’t do it based on the offset pedals comments. Try it for yourself.
a bit late but there is no justification for why you would choose a manual over the best in the market auto transmission system there is
I have a 320d Lixury auto. Had it 4 years now. Not a fault ever once. Drives brilliantly. Rock solid driving and comfort.
I've got a F30 320d & it's completely faultless what a brilliant car
How’s it holding up? I don’t know if I should buy one because of the timing chain issue
Zaker I only recently bought one, 150k miles on it, chain done, runs perfectly, great car.
@@davolyncho5992 who buys 150k mile bmw. I bought my x5 from 2011 with 30k
@@adamhussain2220 I do, it’s near mint, hasn’t had 1 issue, it’s perfect. As long as you look after a car you should get 250,000 miles out of it easy.
@@davolyncho5992 idk I probo just have ocd as I think that the seats are crapp over 100k and it’s bound to break down
Have to say, The 3 series is the best looking from its class.
@Costel Coaie Yes
@Costel Coaie C Class looks classier, however the 3 series looks tougher.
Jaguar XE looks the best in this class!
@@Zunimassa97 yeah C Class always looks classier but 3 series always has the sporty and in my opinion better look.
@@Zunimassa97c class is taxi car. 3 serie for driving😂
I've had a 320 sport for the best part of 5 years now and its never disappointed me on a run. Travelling from the South West to Bergen in Belgium on a full tank of fuel and back again topping up UK side of the euro tunnel on the return leg. Awesome car :-)
I have had my 320ix for 9 months and it`s a fun car to drive. The engine is very peppy and in sport it has plenty of power for me. I have the sport package that is a deal that makes car even more agile with the 18 inch tires. I had a 2011 328ix with the inline 6 and I don`t miss the added power that comes at a price in poor gas milage compared to this turbo 4 with over 30 miles a gallon so far. I get a kick out of the haters bitching about BMW mechanical issues. The car comes with a 4 year 50,000 mile all included service plan that is all you can ask for. When I get near that 50,000 limit I`ll trade her in for a new one like I did with my 2011. BMW treats you like you want to be treated and more so it`s worth the little more you pay. Both times I bought program cars with 4,000miles that knocked $5,000 off the sticker of $39,500 bringing the price down to something I could handle. I have enjoyed my experience with the 3 series the last 4 years and plan to continue loving my baby Beemer.
I'm a proud owner of a BMW 328i and I have to say, I absolutely love it!
Tyrone I have driven the 328i and own the 328d (that's what the 320d is named in the U.S.). Both are great cars. If acceleration matters more to you then get the 328i if you want better MPGs get the 328d (320d). I will say that even though the 328i is faster, the 328d is no slouch. I have no problem getting up to speed on the highway.
biggun2188 i believe the theres a 320d in the US, the only difference is the 328d having more power
Hired a 2014 320d for a month and drove it all over the UK , really lovely car and everyone loved it, neighbours, girls I pick, strangers
+greathey1234 that's sport version, not m sport
" it`s gonna take a while .. there`s quite a lot of them " ---> cue tractor noise 0:58
This is one of the reviews that helped me make up my mind to get a 320d , love it, my first diesel also, been very happy with it even though its a lower spec SE model , its a great drive, comfortable frugal, and solid , i reckon i made the right choice.
How’s it treated you
@billy - still love it?
You had any problem with this car?is it reliable?
I second that. Before the stupid RFTs, the turbocharging and bland styling. The E36 and E46 were amazing BMWs. They were tight, solid, great handling and had that simple yet substantial feel when driving them plus they were beautiful to look at.
Man now your in carwow
I love this BMW 3 series, it's look sporty, very nice exterior design!😍
Still got mine after 10 years (150,000 miles)
Still loving in !! 😊
How do you maintain it? That's incredible

In my father's F31 318d, at 80mph-130km/h you could whisper instead of talking. The engine purrs at 2100rpm, you hear some road noise (that's because of the winter tires and the rough italian roads), but nothing much. No vibrations, no hard reactions from the suspension... More confortable than the Mercedes I've been in. As for the style, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I do like BMW's and Mercedes' design, but not Audi's.
The engine isn't smaller, it still is the 2.0 liter diesel, only with 116bhp (316d) or 143bhp (318d) instead of the 184bhp of the 320d. My father's 318d F31 (so the Touring) hasn't got 1000miles (that means that the engine isn't runnig at its best yet) but already does around 55/60mpg, while travelling with the boot very full. That's impressive.
You forgot to mention how light and agile it feels despite the fact that its actually slightly heavier than e90,e90 just felt so heavy
Drove a new 335i Twin Turbo 2 days ago.... I had so much fun driving it. I drove it fast but their was a lot of traffic in ATL so i couldn't go all the way on the floor.
This was when matts job was Car Buyer but now its Carwow
Matt is still king of car review
i wait for 10minutes to let the video load up patiently on my 256kbps connection so that i can watch Matt reviewing full screen!! LOL!!
the car is equipped with comfort access which means you font need to use the key. What you see there is so that you hold the car's remote close to that symbol for when the car fails to recognize the remote.
Does anyone else find, that at least the 320d has very little steering feel? Even in the Sport and Sport+ modes, it just alters the steering weight.
Oh, almost forgot how good these reviews can be. And damn, that's one fine looking car.
Excellent review Matt. This car will give the C-Class a run for its money.
this guy's reviews are the best
Clean diesels are the filter aided engines and it's the filters that cause the ultra thin PM to be emitted.
was waiting for this review so long!!!
it has been 9 tough years huh?
Heard these 3 series got a timing chain issue around 70000 or 80000 miles
These front sits are incredibly beautiful and comfortable!
Manual and Auto transmission can't operate in the same car at the same time. However, gearbox developers found a balance for drivers who prefer both manual and auto in the same car. The result is what is called the Dual Clutch gearbox. Many car makers install this type of gearbox in their cars now.
e.g. Mercedes call theirs MCT
BMW = DCT
AUDI/VW = DSG
etc
With these intelligent gearboxes, you are able change gears manually, or you can just press a button and leave the car in automatic mode.
Just goes to show, the old 3 box saloon design won't die even in a country where hatchbacks are more popular.
One of the best looking cars out there! Great job BMW!
A bit of a toned down review, but always great to watch. Clearly one of the best presenters on the internet. Nice work.
car buyer, i suggest using a lens with a wider angle like how top gear does
Cadillac ATS is another viable contender for champ of the sport sedan section.
I heard that cars are cheaper in the US, so I compared a 328i luxury from US website to a less equiped 328i luxery to a belgian website and the price difference is 10.000 euro!! And I live 700 km from Bayern! Still love this car though!
Agreed. Having had both, this is so true. Runflats + sporty = harsh but fun ride. Merc "floats" to your destination. :) Both wonderful, its like chosing between blone and brunette :)
NOTE TO AUTO MAKERS; FIX THE RIGHT HAND DRIVE ,AND STEERING WHEEL PLACEMENT. ON a Maserati the pedals are SO close together, heel and toeing, are VERY EASY. Hitting the break on a QUATTROPORTE, YOU CAN HIT THE BREAK AND GAS AT THE SAME TIME. Mostly when just starting out, like me. :)
Thanks Mat for another great review! I have a 2013 328i and love it!!
Brian
What about the problems of the engine N47, this same 2.0 diesel?
It's renowned for breaking the transmission chain.
great balance in the reviews! Sporty cars for Matt, city cars for Rebecca
HI
watch the review again it explains how the pedals are not in line with the steering and seating position. Had that problem with a lexus is200 b4, now i have sciatica from prolonged driving.
thanks
Happy to see him again !
Good for the BMW test drive it probe the good performance and safety mobility.
You guys make great reviews!!!... Greetings from Argentina!
and regarding the brembo brakes, from 60-0 the genesis does it in 114ft compared to the standard brakes in the bmw that does it in 115ft. For an extra 1 feet braking distance, that is hardly worth mentioning.
It's also a large too if you want to ask more about the windows
made a downpayment on a used f30 320d. Hopefully my car is gonna be great!
How is it treating you?
he had an accident @@rogernkosi8420
Have fun with the new diesel law 😂
Historia w 5 minut ...co
just got mine today in white really happy with it
Wow the pedals off set to the right?! " This is a complete deal killer to me, no matter what", thanks for pointing it out.
Now to review the Luxury and Modern lines!
I can't wait for the day I can get one of these!
Hi, the BMW is so cheap right now! Just make sure you are aware of the timing chain issue and don’t buy from a guy that’s floored the car 🚗
@@zaker600 Even 3 series from 2017 onward have the same problem with the timing chain?
- All the sedans are locally produced by Benz and the even the BMW has started to locally produce the 3 series and 5 series, 7 series comes as a CKD and its still cheaper then the locally assembled S Class
My 2014 320d M Sport X Drive is the best car I’ve ever owned
Why isnt the boot covered totally? I see metal, usually german cars have good isolation from dust and sound + you can always damage the metal if it isnt covered 3:56?
That is a pity to listen to. I was disappointed going from a 2001 E39 (interior looked like a luxury hall) to a 2008 318i E90, whose interior looked cheap in comparison. So if what you say is how it is...I am headed towards C Class sometime from now...thank you for the comment.
Getting my f30 335d drive in 3 weeks!!!!
yes the oil problem happened all over the world, but I heard that it's fixed now :)
this over c class any day and a4 even though i love audi u gotta admit bmw takes the win in this category
I'm not exactly a BMW fan but I have to admit, that is amazing. No C-class can even get close to that.
can't wait for the coupe and the m3
excuse my ignorance but is it possible to buy a manual and then put in automatic in also, so it would be possible to use the clutch and 6 speed and then with a shift go into automatic?
Matt should be telling us about that this is the 'Sport trim' so not standard spec.
The BOXING GLOVE made my day HAHAHAHA
Matt, just searched your whole channel, how come you never made a review about Subaru?
@MsaAlabdulkarim considering the 62mpg (3.79 L/100KM), 7.5 seconds is pretty impressive.
the new headlamps will take some getting used to, but bmw will always be top of this class in terms of handling. all the interior stuff is all good alterations, but in all honesty I wouldn't bother with a diesel as it takes some of the joy of driving it away. go with a manual and petrol version and you'll have no regrets, in fact.. i'd like one myself :)
Brilliant reviewer for a brilliant car.
Best sports sedan .. best review.. Go Matt Go!!
BMW diesels do trundle loudly at idling speeds but their statistics are unbeatable. The new 325d 2 litre diesel packs a whopping 218bhp and 450nm torque and can still bring back OVER 50 mpg on a combined cycle and less than 130g CO2/km, beat that!!!
- In India the Benz are more expensive by a decent margin even though they are locally produced, that's why my family went in for two BMW 7series and one 3 series over the benz ..
the king is dead, long live the king! well done Mat!
The thing is, he is driving a diesel. The diesel is really jerky at times and has less features than the 328i but the 328i is just incredible. The engine is fantastic, more features, 0-60 about 6 seconds and top speed 155 mph. 328i FTW
Fair points. I was speaking to US buyers for the most part. BMW's 4 cylinder turbo is great, no doubt. 240 hp vs. 201 hp. My point is that I've seen 4 cylinder 328s at 47.5K US dollars, wheareas I got my loaded C 350 for 42.5 US dollars. And I do not like that floating iPad nav screen which BMW & Audi have opted for.
I was a long time BMW owner, and loved the last E90 I had. But when change time came, I researched long about the 2 liter diesel engines. Was truly tempted to get a 120d in mint state, but got scared by all the ruckus about the engine´s severe design problems. I hope they solved them on this 2.0 liter diesel engine model.
@JELH so the pedals are not offset to the right for an automatic? My mom's changing car later in the year and she's considering this bmw3.
Well then take some advice from a racing driver. A RWD car should give you much more control over the rear axle. They are usually faster than 4wds around corners because of their superior ability to yaw. Just because you can get a 4wd around a corner faster doesn't mean it's a better handling car. 4wds require less skill to corner relatively well.
Loved my 330e...Even though its heavy its still a fast and well handle car
Is that BMW SOS button specially made for 320d N47 engine which is prone to timing chain problems? :D
Roman N good point mate.if the chain will brake or the plastik piece where he is slying in,it will result in engine big damages, that can leave even to replace all engine.plus that, the brave engineers put the distribution....in the back of the engine.so....if you want to change distribution, you must take the all engine out.not so smart...haaaa?
I´m between that one and this one. The 2006-2012 was a joke for me.
But this new one is really, really good. Personally, my favorite feature of this car is the three lines it comes in, (Sport, Luxury and Modern).
No fighting over Rebecca and matt please. Just enjoy the car/review.
Don't forget Lexus. They may not make the most exciting car to drive in their class but their build quality, design and reliability is and has long been considered the best in the industry.
The ad that played before the video was one for the Cadillac ATS, lolololol.
The formula one cars and competition cars (in 24 hours of lemans for example) has RWD because the RWD is more "hard to drive" but also are more sport, and the AWD brings to the drives a "unfair" advantage.
WHAT AN AMAZING CAR, BMW KNOW HOW TO MAKE AN AMAZING CAR!!!
@TheVtieg6 Havent seen the car in person, have we... this is one the most beautiful saloons EVER made, and probably the most beautiful on the market today.
just when i wanted to see the review its here!
That's just a random opinion. Where did you learn that? PM are already ultra thin hence "particulate"
If you think performance and MPG is the only thing going for the BMW then I suggest you actually watch this video and compare it to his review of the A4. The BMW's chassis is in another league to the A4. Driving a BMW and driving an Audi are just leagues apart from each other.
The A4 looks the same as it has been for 8 years and it's getting tired. BMW have given the 3 series some muscle which makes it look fresh and sharp.
Much better interior? Hardly. More spacious? Perhaps.
0 - 60 in JUST 7:30 seconds?!! WOW WHAT A ROCKET..
Hold on a minute. The pedals are off-set. Why didn't the review end there?
Sorry, I may be misleading people with my last post. Does the f30 use drive by wire steering system or just an electrical motor power assisted steering, as opposed to hydraulic power assisted steering?
I have heard a lot of reviewers praise the F30 but that it's driving dynamics are not as precise as the E90. Any thoughts?
What does everyone think off the BMW 3 series 318i auto 2008 UK?
he doesn't review cars, he just films them
Hi there , when are you going to do the Cadillac ATS ???
Thank´s
Outstanding review Matt! Ur awesome man! GLOVE box inside glove box was to damn funny! Hahaha the new 3 series will sell like hotcakes!
iei matt is back
They do that to save weight and they have an advanced RWD setup that cant be compared to a normal road legal RWD setup....thanks
May aswell be 62mpg and 7.5 seconds, BUT, not at the same time. :D
