i've been waiting for this video for months! i just wish Porsche wouldn't produce them in such low volumes, i want to see more on the roads rather than in collections selling above retail price!
+Roads Untraveled Make the GT3 and RS auto only. Create manual transmission demand. Release a limited edition manual 911R at a premium price. Typical porsche.
Porsche has really knocked it out of the park in the design department with all their cars this generation. This car, however, is simply drop-dead gorgeous! And this color combo is perfect - the metallic blue with yellow accents inside is exactly what I would order. Looks good in the bright yellow too! Too bad these literally are not going to depreciate.
Great video Matt! I think Porsche got the balance absolutely perfect with the GT4. The right amount of power, the manual shifter and three pedals every car enthusiast wants. Some of Porsche's finest work here. We absolutely love our GT4! Although the Spyder is more fun in CA. The GT4 is just as awesome on the road as it is on track!
Thank you Matt and the other guys @ The smoking tire for making these videos. I enjoy watching these each morning before I goto work, esp since I never see an episode of Tuned anymore :( Keep up the great work
I can only dream for now, perhaps some day the GT4 will be obtainable by me. For now, my 987.2 Cayman will continue to deliver the ear to ear smiles for miles and miles. For anyone who hasn't driven a Cayman of any generation, one drive is all it will take for you to realize what exceptional driver's cars they are.
I've had my GT4 since November and just love it. With modest options and carbon buckets it came in at $95K. I've had five 911's including an '07 GT3, but there's something about these mid-engine Porsches that just does it for me. Shorter gearing would be the only thing I'd change.
Matt time to jump of the /Drive ship and continue doing what you do best, TST. I really enjoy these one takes and the traditional TST videos. The variety is unmatched.
Own the same one as driven, although interior is silver not yellow. That said, agree mostly with the idea that the GT4 will be the most investment worthy Cayman of all time, with limited production, mandatory stick/manual transmission and given less than 2500 were produced for America, it has it all. Highly reliable and low maintenance for a near exotic make this a slam dunk Porsche collectible in my opinion.
What a lovely sounding car. I love the patented howl of the Porsche engines. Wether it be a brand new car or a 25 year old car. they all sound beautiful.
I watched a number of reviews before yours. I should have watched yours first. I will be driving one if these tomorrow. It looks like I'll have a new car. Thanks Matt.
The Cayman GT4 and the Evora 400 is like the perfect canyon car. Crazily good handling, lightweight, perfect amount of horsepower for the street (let's face it, 400hp is very enough for the street. More than that is just too much). And the looks and practicallity department is also good which can make them some sort of a daily car (If you have no kids).
Perfect car. It does NOT need more power. But be careful saying it wont get away from you. Definitely way more than enough power to get away from you going 10-11/10ths. I do hate the typical porsche long gearing though.
This is a Porsche done 100% right. All the way down to the seat accents. I would love this car one day, however, I'm shooting for my Lamborghini dreams, currently.
Hey Matt... So, I think at this point everybody and their mom has seen your Fiesta ST vs. E46 video. With the Focus RS coming, and the price point it's at, it raises another question that's somewhat similar: Focus RS, or a used 997 C2S/C4S?
+Max Archer OOh, good call. Let's get the Porsche people all pissy like we got the BMW people! I bet Bill will be down to make a return trip for that one.
+TheSmokingTire + Can't wait to see the clubsport review. Was going to submit a wheel well page for a 981 Cayman S, since I haven't seen any 981 Caymans on your one takes before. But now that you've driven a GT4 and clubsport...haha
+TheSmokingTire oh yea. I remember that actually. Against Harris' Audi. Base Cayman is just a little too low on power for me for a weekend track car tho. Plus for the price difference between the S and the base (taking into account that the same options are cheaper on the S model) it's totally worth springing for the S/GTS. 2.7 L is still loads of fun for canyon driving tho.
+Jeff K Yup I'm aware. The S also gets a pretty nice boost in 0-60 performance, although not as much as the base 718. But for the 2.7 L that Matt reviewed in that /Drive video, it was just a bit too low on power. I could probably live with the power for the new base 718 since there's such a significant jump in torque.
I wish Porsche would just truly allow the Cayman to become Porsche's full-on sports car, and let the 911 just become the Gran Tourer it's slowly becoming.
+PhreshPharaoh36 LOL have you driven a 911? The 991 generation is very much a GT car when you want it to be. Stupid comfortable, even on long road trips.
PhreshPharaoh36 I have actually. A 991 Targa, and a 930 with a whale tail. The 911 has become a GT car. It's no longer a sports car, and no longer is it a driver's car either!
My dream Car, simple , manual , good power , looks great. This is within my reach in a year or so. kind of a bummer that used ones are 115k when msrp is starting at 85k. I know its not the fastest but damn this thing would be fun for many many years. Anyways thanks matt. I enjoy your show.
Matt you should do these one takes with a camera mounted on the right side of your helmet. i always love those views because we still get the front view but also get to see you shifting. i would only do this view when theres no passenger like now
Longer gear boxes just give you head room to add more power. Take this car to the nearest hardcore Porsche tuner and have them build this up another 50hp/40tq and the gearing will probably feel just right. IF you can get what is now rated at the flywheel to the wheels this car would be insane. With the Exception of the Carrera GT and the 918 this might be the first Porsche I genuinely like that is approachable to buy.
Matt, great driving. I noticed you were try to get the back-end to come around and unable to power-over and resorted to saying that very aggressive techniques have to be used to get the back end to come around. Using a "back it in"(coming in faster then usual then applying the brakes quite hard to shift the momentum to the front of the car and making the back end go super light) approach will really induce over-steer without abusing the vehicle. You can also try a little scandy flick also. It's probably best to get comfortable with it with one of your own vehicles before trying it on an owner's car, but once you master it, it not only looks cool, but feels bad ass haha, especially on track.
+Batta Marwan Wait until you see my CTSV track test. I demonstrate that technique. But without a long straight from which to scrub speed in that particular 180 corner, it's hard to get enough momentum to properly kick the back out with those wide ass sticky tires.
Absolute work of art, this car is amazing. The only downfall is its long gearing, but I also understand why Porsche set it up the way they did. Also an easy fix as well though
Hi Matt. One day you shoud fly over the other large puddle. To have a nice ride on our highways. And you know why thes gears are so long. Greetings from Germany
+eeterp32 The base price of the GT3 is almost $50k higher than the GT4, so the cost difference is minimal, plus I'd have a spare 3.8 I could sell to make up some of the expense. And at the end of the day you'd be owning a 911 GT3 (which is great), whereas what I want is a Cayman GT4, which is ~200lbs lighter, mid engined, and manual.
+wendysorbust Unfortunately there were some issues with the cars and we didn't get to do much with them. I did do six other one takes in TX though, including a ZL1 modified by Chuck.
Matt do you feel this car would be better with shorter gear ratios? Many outlets say it'd be faster and quicker with a shorter set of ratios, especially on the circuit, but more so in terms of daily drivability too.
+PistolWhip Agreed; do you go to the track much? I don't, and I do like seeing how the car drives in "real life," how Matt drives on the street in different cars, conversations with the owners, etc.
yitznewton No track near me other than Indianapolis motor speedway.. wish they would run track days there on the f1 track.. Stuck with back road carving in southern IN...
Matt, can you make any comparisons between this and the new Lotus Evora 400 you drove a couple weeks ago. Seems like these two cars kind of compete with one another. Thanks.
+DasCayman Canyons are more fun than tracks. But given the (all other things being equal) opportunity to test a sports car at a race track, I'll take the track every time.
+TheSmokingTire understandable. If I had a track 5 min from my house and it was free, I'd never drive on back roads again. Thanks for all your hard work at TST plus your crew
I am lucky enough to be getting a GT4 in this color in next 3 months...I went with the red stitching and Carbon Bucket Seats , carbon trim and red belts and not going with ceramics...I had a question for Matt as I am 6'2" about 240 lbs regarding the seats as I was torn my between those and the 18 ways but most forum people swear by the carbon buckets both for performance and for collectibility....Matt what do you think of the seats for non-track use potential...I may only be able to get one to two track days per year
You are so lucky just watching this guy go around the track make me want one. I would love to just drive it all day around the track... But for now its just another dream (ಥ﹏ಥ)
+16ValveVtec I ran a 1:27.9 in the GT4, and a 1:24.5 in the Clubsport. I wish i could have stuck around to do another session in each car without having to do the review, could have easily taken a second or two off each.
i've been waiting for this video for months! i just wish Porsche wouldn't produce them in such low volumes, i want to see more on the roads rather than in collections selling above retail price!
+Craig J they're still holding it back, cause they know it would be a better car than the 911 when fully let off the leash.
+givemeajackson I hear what you are saying, but this has nothing to do with the original comment lol
Literally saw 4 of them during my last track day. There are definitely some owners using them out there.
+Craig J They're all over - I feel like I see two or three a day in London.
***** my point is that they're not making more of them so it doesn't interfere with 911 business.
Now just give the public the GT3 and GT3 RS in a stick and the world will be a better place. Great one-take, Matt :D
+Roads Untraveled Make the GT3 and RS auto only. Create manual transmission demand. Release a limited edition manual 911R at a premium price. Typical porsche.
All I have to say is: well done Porsche!
Update: just bought my 2016 GT4 in April 2022 for near MSRP 🤣
Great video Matt! I think Porsche got the balance absolutely perfect with the GT4. The right amount of power, the manual shifter and three pedals every car enthusiast wants. Some of Porsche's finest work here. We absolutely love our GT4! Although the Spyder is more fun in CA. The GT4 is just as awesome on the road as it is on track!
seems like a fun car to drive
Beautiful car and and an absolutely gorgeous day for shooting this one take at Willow. I loved it! Great job, Matt!
Thank you Matt and the other guys @ The smoking tire for making these videos. I enjoy watching these each morning before I goto work, esp since I never see an episode of Tuned anymore :(
Keep up the great work
That blue paint....thing is beautiful!
That's what I thought too and now she's in my garage.
Amazing Opportunity... Youre a driving unicorn Matt!

My wish has come true. Glad you have delivered Matt! Been waiting for this for months... Thanks for the vid!
+xkrnxboix Now... who has a 981 Cayman/Cayman S Matt can borrow? ;P
The GT4 to me is sort of like a modern NSX
+Russ Nicholls Only with a lot more power this time.
The Evora 400 and the Cayman gt4 definitely make me think of the old nsx
+Russ Nicholls NSX stands for new sports experimental ... so no not really.
+fromkentucky Not much more 30%~~. I'm sure with some small mods the original NSX could also produce 400 bhp.
+BarbecuedPossum Pretty sure you need to super charge the NSX to get any real power incase out of it
#savethemanuals

That thing dances. Great video

it's already a fun ride when Matt is behind the wheel :-)
Matt , Cayman gt4 or Evora 400 ...which one and why ? like to hear your opinion =))
We all like to hear his opinion about this :-D
same ^
Dear Santa.....
Only thing I dont like about the GT4 is its 6 figure price tag.
Then don't fully option it out
Now you're just talking crazy!
+robm425 they are going for that much. it's the Porsche gt car tax, lol. so much demand
Work harder.
They won't let me drive for über with my company car :(
What a sound! Looked very poised. Seems like he was getting addicted to it heh. That back straight, winding it out sounds amazing!
Great, now I want a Cayman again. Thanks Farah. ;)
right on time.
Awesome vid. Loved you're approach
This video was a treat, thanks
what a realistic dream car, wow I need to have on in a few years
Limited supply, last generation of flat 6. I'm not hopeful.
Awesome matt - thanks
I really like that little clip at 3:04..beauty

+Max Archer Good work Max
+Max Archer This is the best comment

+Stephen I did a 981 Cayman for /DRIVE last year in England with Chris Harris. It's on the free side.
+TheSmokingTire oh yea. I remember that actually. Against Harris' Audi. Base Cayman is just a little too low on power for me for a weekend track car tho. great video. was waiting to have yr take on it.
Nice track driving Matt!
first reviewer who can actually drive without drifting although he's driving in a desert
I wish Porsche would just truly allow the Cayman to become Porsche's full-on sports car, and let the 911 just become the Gran Tourer it's slowly becoming.
Lol have you driven a 911? They are far from GT cars...
+PhreshPharaoh36 LOL have you driven a 911?
The 991 generation is very much a GT car when you want it to be. Stupid comfortable, even on long road trips.

Nice of CJ to let you take his beater around the track
This audio set up is perfect
Hey I dig your channel brah but I gotta say I like you on the road and off the track my friend.... Keep up the good work!
Matt, would you have this or an Evora 400? I personally would go for the Evora because its not a Porsche.
Nice Driving!
So Matt, GT4 or Evora 400?
Great driving and vid bro
"All the good shit." Fantastic!
New camera gear? The video quality is awesome! As always, nice work.
Nice sound...
Come to the bay area! I along with my buddies have some cool cars that you can drive and know a few good roads!
Beautiful!
Dream car 😱🙌
This car will never loose value even with 70k miles on it ... So much for being able to afford it on day

Hi Matt. One day you shoud fly over the other large puddle. To have a nice ride on our highways. And you know why thes gears are so long.
Greetings from Germany
This car's on the short list for my future garage, especially with a full gear ratio and GT3 engine swap. What a car, honestly.
+kolideoskope you're going to swap in an engine that costs $50K to gain 90hp?
can you think of a better alternative? it's the best engine Porsche makes. maybe pulling it out of a crashed GT3 would be cheaper.
+kolideoskope If I want GT3 power, I'll buy a GT3.
Sick car! That track looked stupid dusty too.
Man I wish I had your job! There won't be a more satisfying one in the entire world! Btw, updates about your skyline soon???
Smoking a blunt right now, too bad I can't pass it to Matt haha :)
It's 4:20 somewhere.
When are you posting up the videos you filmed driving the HHP/Chucks Tuning cars? Really excited to see you and him on video.
+wendysorbust Unfortunately there were some issues with the cars and we didn't get to do much with them. I did do six other one takes in TX though, including a ZL1 modified by Chuck.
Matt do you feel this car would be better with shorter gear ratios? Many outlets say it'd be faster and quicker with a shorter set of ratios, especially on the circuit, but more so in terms of daily drivability too.
definitely could use shorter gears. Porsche wanted to handicap the car against the gt3
Not sure why, but the track one takes just don't do it for me like the canyon ones.... not sure why??
+PistolWhip Agreed; do you go to the track much? I don't, and I do like seeing how the car drives in "real life," how Matt drives on the street in different cars, conversations with the owners, etc.
An empty track is not as relatable as a public road. I did enjoy this one though. I'm sure Matt will do a GT4 in the canyons too.
yitznewton No track near me other than Indianapolis motor speedway.. wish they would run track days there on the f1 track.. Stuck with back road carving in southern IN...
+PistolWhip
Its kind of an ugly track, might have something to do with it. I'm sure it would look better at Laguna Seca
+PistolWhip But he can give it full beans at the track
Even did the radio delete. Bravo.
you said it stopped pulling up top, did you hit a rev limiter or did you just shift around 8? from the sound of it, it should pull till 9 and be good
You need your own show on the Velocity channel. Yes, I agree, totally. Me too.
Matt, can you make any comparisons between this and the new Lotus Evora 400 you drove a couple weeks ago. Seems like these two cars kind of compete with one another. Thanks.
Nice video, nice track, awesome car!
Now Matt, my question to you is: When are you releasing a BMW M2 review?
Most of the time I'm not jealous on these one takes, but this time I am.
oh my, that color.
Matt, would you take the Cayman or the Evora 400?
i love the GT4 ❤
How good is the radio?
How fast was that straight crossing the start/finish?
Is it easy to swap the rear gears to make the overall gearing shorter?
How does this compare to the Lotus Evora 400 you drove recently?
I don't know this man without his sun glasses.
Lower production higher demand. Do you prefer driving the the 997 GT3 or the GT4.
hope Wilson also brought the 675LT or P1 for you to try as well
Since you were on the track this time what top speed did you hit?
Matt, now that you've driven it, GT4 or Evora 400? Is the Evora worth it just for the exclusivity?
This confirms Matt's opinion on the podcast that canyons are more fun than tracks
Is there anything else beside one takes
the video is clearer than real life
I am lucky enough to be getting a GT4 in this color in next 3 months...I went with the red stitching and Carbon Bucket Seats , carbon trim and red belts and not going with ceramics...I had a question for Matt as I am 6'2" about 240 lbs regarding the seats as I was torn my between those and the 18 ways but most forum people swear by the carbon buckets both for performance and for collectibility....Matt what do you think of the seats for non-track use potential...I may only be able to get one to two track days per year
+Three Pedal Rebel I was comfortable in these carbon seats, you should be good to go.
You are so lucky just watching this guy go around the track make me want one. I would love to just drive it all day around the track... But for now its just another dream (ಥ﹏ಥ)
what times did you run at willow springs matt?
+16ValveVtec I ran a 1:27.9 in the GT4, and a 1:24.5 in the Clubsport. I wish i could have stuck around to do another session in each car without having to do the review, could have easily taken a second or two off each.
