Thank you Dan for demystifying my "perfect" 5-wood swing. For 20 years now, I couldn't figure out what I did so right that allowed me to hit error-free 5-wood shots. As a result, try as I might, I couldn't copy the right moves to my other clubs, But thanks to your great explanation, I now have the answer. First, I was scared stiff that I would break the shaft of my 5-wood club seeing that it is so thin & the ball is on the ground, which means I could hit the ground by mistake. Hence I dared not swing hard. Since I dared not swing hard, I avoided adding transverse turns to my backswing, which is what I would do to add power. Then for some strange reason, my right wrist instinctively folded the 5-wood up and down. Together with the weight shift to the left, I ended up with a sagittal swing. Combining weight shift & folding the club down, I got my right tempo and great 5-wood shots, without much effort. Since I now know the right moves, I was able to transfer the swing onto my other clubs. Your golf lessons are the best, Dan! Thank you so much.
Its pretty ironic how lag is created by actually trying to throw it away early. Trying to unfold, uncock, etc much earlier in the downswing actually puts pressure on the shaft and creates lag. The polar opposite of trying to hold the angles and wristcock. What I feel is happening as I continue on this journey is that by trying to throw all the angles away much earlier my body actually responds to that and turns toward the target. The theory that arms, hands and wrists are all relaxed and the body does the work has NEVER worked for me and I worked on it for years and years. I am really starting to believe that the arms ,hands and wrists are extremely active in the swing.Just shot an 82 on a course that I struggle to break 100 on and it was relatively effortless. Not saying I found it Dan but I am very grateful for teachers like you who offer hope and a new way of thinking.Gives people like me hope who have felt hopeless for so many years!
You are an amazing coach!!! Ask you a question about shanks and you said keep elbows close to my body. Which worked. I just saw your short clip on drop kick draws and thats exactly what I was doing!!! You're the BEST!!!!
Thanks Dan! Great video lesson. Can you please make a video explaining how to draw and fade the ball probably? Would love to hear your thoughts and techniques. Keep them coming 🔥
Richard, great question. It’s different for everyone. I would say film it from face on and play with different heights of release until you have the one you want and then know where that feel is. For me, it’s a gradual release from slightly below top. I feel like I wait 1/2inches before my hand really speed it up
Do you have a favourite release position for the different clubs on a full swing, akin to the three releases from Dan Greive on the short game? Or is the unfolding position sufficient?
Dan, can you make a video about where to make the swoosh on the driver for max speed? I have always made the swoosh at the ball. But they said u need to make the swoosh 2-3ft in front of the ball. I end up handle dragging or hold lag for too long with big high slice. Any advise or drill for it?
@@Eqnotalent yes because if you try and store the ‘whoosh’ you pulled the handle and pushed the ball out there - you need the speed going into the ball

You had mentioned not getting the club behind the golfer. How can one consciously prevent this on the downswing? I feel that once I’m on top of the backswing, trail wrist extended, lead wrist bowed, that sometimes the club falls behind during the downswing. The result is a release that doesn’t really line up well.
If you’re doing all of that and feel it behind you it’s one of two things…you either twisted away from the and now cannot reach because the club is behind you OR you’ll need to feel like you release the right hand to the left with you left palm down - ie. Get more on top of the ball. Lemme know if that helps!
@@danaltongolfinstruction I’ll have to try that. One thing is that I’m left handed but swing with right handed clubs and bat left handed. I don’t know why I ended up like this. But being left handed I’m careful not to pull the club. Sometimes I have to remind myself to work the right hand more through the release. Almost feeling like I’m delivering an uppercut in boxing. I can tell you that pulling the club feels really powerful but has its problems.
@@lgs42 I does feel powerful but it’s not. Keep doing what you’re doing and if you have to feel like you release the of your left hand up, then feel that as your release - logo of glove to the sky on way thru - keep it up!

That’s so amazing to hear. And SPOT ON. Yes creating Width creates Lag - I’m so glad it’s working for you - keep it up!

Yes, hard to do with the tracer app I have - it would I’d have to start and stop a bunch of times but it’s on the list!
it does help, thank you Dan !
You’re welcome, stay tuned!
Fascinating! So what’s a good swing thought to achieve this. Throw clubhead at the ball from the top? Best. Richard from Canberra Australia 🇦🇺

Make it before the ball about half way down…just don’t try to rotate around as you do it - try to be frontal.

so the key is to swing and not allow the club flexing too much on either side (backward or forward)!!!
