You’re in for a fun time this lesson. I’ve got a killer bass workout to show you that’s pretty epic! It’s just as useful for rank beginning bass players as it is for seasoned pros - there’s a version of this exercise that will work for everyone.
And if you want a seriously monstrous bass workout or even a killer bass warmup, you can go through every different version of the exercise.
The thing I like most about this bass exercise is that it gets you playing all over your fretboard in different ways as well as helping you work on mastering one of the building blocks of music - the major chord scale.
Not only that, you can use these exercises to bolster your technique, work on your hand coordination, string-crossing, general hand strength and dexterity - the uses for this bass workout are only limited by your imagination.
As far as how to practice these bass exercises, it’s up to you. Obviously, if you’re still a beginner, you’re probably not ready for the advanced level of the exercise - and that’s fine!
Simply start with the first version and work from there. I’d recommend starting nice and slow - ideally using a metronome and making your notes as long and as beautiful as possible.
Remember to stay relaxed as well! You don’t want tension to cause any physical issues for you.
If you’re more of an intermediate or advanced player, you can still use the beginner level exercises. In fact, I encourage it! You can use the beginning levels as a bass warmup before sinking your teeth into the more complex versions of the exercise.
All the same recommendations still apply though; use a metronome, nice long notes, and stay as relaxed as you can.
If you want to get started with these exercises today, I’ve made it super easy for you. I’ve put the tabs and notation for all the exercises you saw on screen into one handy little PDF and you can download it for free right here:

Just fill out the form underneath the video and it’ll be sent straight to you. You can get started with this epic bass workout today!
If you have any questions, just put them below in the comments and I’d be happy to help you out!
Good luck with the exercises and happy playing!
Cheers,
Luke

never have i ever watched a lesson that improved my playing quite like this video
Awesome! So glad you're getting something out of it!
Enregistrement c'est cool moi je veux ton numéro de contact
Cheers
Nice Video! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you thought about - Riddleagan Skillful Playing Remedy (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great one of a kind guide for learning complex guitar chords and become a pro minus the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my friend Sam got great success with it.
@@BecomeABassist Thank you for these videos, I agree 100% with the comment above! These exercises help you understand the link between each notes, practicing those will definitely improve the way I move around between chords on my bass :O
After actually seeing you play this weekend at a Jazz Fest in a lot of different sub-genres, I was blown away with your authenticity. Makes me want to practice so much more!
It was great to meet you Stu as well as witness your abilities as an MC! Glad it’s motivated you to practice too - that’s always a good thing!
This is exactly what I need now to become more at home on the fretboard. Thx so much!
This is a great lesson/exercise Luke! One of the things I find most genuine about your instruction is that you don't edit out the hiccups that might occur during a demonstration making us learners feel at home with you.
Another excellent lesson Luke! Great warm-up, great learning for scales, arpeggios, 4 note chords, etc. Doing this is random keys, etc. daily as part of a warm-up would be so valuable. Thanks for doing this lesson. Great stuff!!!
The best exercise for beginer that I ever saw! Thank you!
WOW! Such variety and versatility hidden in plain sight! You got my respect,
Love this exercise.
A true teacher.
Thank you and all the best to you.
Excellent idea for exercise, very useful in actual playing later on. Many many thanks Mark!
I've been practising basslines on my guitar, i'm on my way to getting actual bass, tomorrow i'll do some of these, nice video friend!
got it already?
I've studied these exercise in a jazz/ modern music school in Milan, but I didnt know the last one! So thank you.
I do appreciate your will to transmit your passion. The world is much better than I thought after viewing your video. Thank you very much !
Whaaat this is crazyy! I've only been doing the first exercice ( begginer exercice ) for like, 3 days and i have already seen improvement. Mind you, i have only been playing for a week. And i am NOT lying. These really work man, thanks!!
Really top notch video - I've heard similar practice advice from elsewhere but this video is far more visually helpful - thank you so much, brother!
Hi luke thank you so much for the help and the free download for the bass. Can't wait to learn off you thanks.
Greetings from Spain.
I’ve just discovered these very, very cool exercises that can take you to the next level because there are almost endless combinations to work with. They are going to keep me busy for a while, I’m sure of that. Well done!
Bass brothers this video is awesome. It absolutely forces you to keep the fretting hand in right position
Dude..this is great. Makes so much sense. Thank you!
Great vid! I've seen other bass channels recommend the same method yet, while I understood what they were saying to do musically, they didn't provide as much visual information in the vid and it was essentially up to you to stop, look up the notes and piece it together while you could practically play along with this one. Makes it much quicker to put into practice and start improving.
This is a great video! I would highly recommend watching. I have learned a lot and it was fun!
A real challenge for me, but loved trying to get the syncopation correct on YYZ. Back to the fretboard now my fingers have stopped aching! Many thanks Luke!
excellent!!!! thanks Luke!!!
That's a nice workout, I'll add the intermediate and advanced version to my practice routine, starting by going up the major scale and playing the chords from root to seventh, and after that going down the scale and from the seventh to the root. I guess that blends really well with the idea I had to start practicing scales more so that I can play more diversely. I like it!
needed a good arpeggio exercise, this is perfect! thanks!
God bless you so much Sir... I love this...
Great lesson. Thanks.
This honestly reminds me of learning the grand scale on piano. Absolutely invaluable information! Thanks! I will be practicing all of this!
Brilliant lesson! Thanks man!!
Thank you so much I learned from you so many bass knowledge.
Great as usual ✌🏼 Thanks...(Greetings from Italy)
This is great allowed me to work the frets in a way that helped lean not just the frets but also the cords
Always learn so much - thank you👍👌🎶🎸
Thank you. Very. Helpful.
Oh man, it's just such a treat for an expert just completing the first example.. because all the puzzle pieces are already there!!
Amazing . Thanks
Neat exercise, can also be combined with some chords, or even a 1-2-4-6 instead of the 1-3-5-7 setup for full tones.
One of the best tutorials I've experienced.
So grateful
This is a great set of exercises. I've been working on improving my fretless intonation on two different basses (a Fender Jazz 4 and an Ibanez SRF706 6 string) and these are great to work on that.
To quadruple value I sing every note and play to a metronome.
That's making things super hardcore. Nicely done @crimfan!
Thank you.
very useful thanks
Love that Spector tone.
wonderful lesson watched God bless you bra. Luke
i like the advance part! pretty cool man
Thank you luca
Thank you
Hi ! Great exercices fitness our hands thanks you exelent teacher
Excellent exercice pour se familiariser avec les arpèges indispensable pour compo et impro dextérité bien connaître son manche tout bénef même traduit en anglais ça reste compréhensible good job👍🤘
You are my saviour. God bless you 🙏
Thanks for tutorial 🙏
Thank you bro....
Thanks Hon. Luke
Thank you for this I’m in a band now and I’m really trying to get good we actually just had a performance yesterday
This is just what I need to try to get the feeling back into my left (fretting) fingers after my small stroke during surgery in January. They’re numb and kind of clubby & lost, right now, and every time I try to just play songs, I end up just working on a couple of key licks.
Maybe this exercise will help to get them re-familiar with the fretboard.
Thank you.
There's more than beginners and advanced players. There are people like me...... I learned kamikaze mushroom palace as my first song on the bass... and I hear things like evil vibrations by the rebirth and I know right then and there that I need technique. Not beginners tips. Like this video... it's perfect for a guitar player like me that after 20 years of playing, finally learned triads because Noone mentioned them till now to me. Thank u sir. This video is amazing. I'm so lucky to have found u finally.
Thank you so much for this video brother. It has taught me more in the 13mins than paying for expensive online lessons ( not trashing them just stating a fact) thanks again it really has broken the boredom and has enabled me to mess around with recorded music and start to emulate some of their bass lines. Look for to seeing some of your other vids.
Very smart lesson, I will try the levels one after the other. I'm in France and I don't speak English very well, I appreciate your fairly moderate language flow and the subtitles, I understand almost everything, which is not often the case on other bass sites. Well done.
Great lesson Luke just subscribed
This is some killer workout
Thank you for the tabs. God bless . I'm watching your videos always coz i want to emprove my self as bassist 😇.. I already subcribe your channel. Thanks a lot teacher 😇

Jesus Cristo... bons exercisios, boa explicação, boa aula - BRASIL
This is a very good lesson
He is one of the really impressive guys on yotube
Thank you very much, I'm a guitar player who has just grab a bass and I feel a litle more a bassist now ;D
Same
Thanks, merci, obrigado, arigatô !!!
try to memorize this. Perhaps this gonna be my big-simple meal for any gigs upcoming
and if you are just starting out, play them slow, slow enough that you are not making any mistakes and are playing clean and in time.
I've been playing Guitar for 40 years, I learned wrong, the mistakes I made in Songs 30 Years ago I still make, and the riffs where my fingers get tangled up are still the same.
Any mistakes you Learn will stay with you forever.
To make it a bit easier to play slow
"The space between the notes creates the colour of the scene" YES - Close to the Edge
Great comment @Chris MJH! Thanks for sharing your hard-won experience!
Yeah keep having fun while exercising!
Nice workout for a whole month hahaha
Thanks dude
I did it...! It's easy now
Hi, thanks for the great videos on your channel, you're a great help. May I ask what kin of bass you are using? It's really nice. Thank you.
Hello, I would like to learn how to play the bass for the song "endless Love". Can I learn it here? Thank you for any info to get me started.
Good stuff Luke!
Trying to figure out how to use this Facebook crap
Greg not John
Downloaded this, then thought I'd give it a quick go, before I knew it 2 hours had passed by, absolutely fantastic.
🎉🎉I subscribed 😌
greetings, I am new to the bass. I have a desire to learn. You have my attention. There are many pages that offer this kind of lessen, however, I enjoy your videos. I look forward to learning from you.
I would like to know how the bass solo from hey barbara by IV of spades created or scales he used?
Luke: I was trying to download your 24 exercises for bass - Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced showing arpeggios and modes. Is that still available? I could not download it from your site. Great exercises. This is something I could do every day to improve my dexterity and fingerboard knowledge. I am glad to see that your site is growing. I am still practicing on a regular basis daily. Two to four hours daily. averaging nearly three hours daily Monday through Friday while the weekends vary. Blessings and keep up the good work. Howard Alexander
Now, go do this in all 12 keys, plus each's relative minor using all string combinations! See you at the end of the next decade ......
SandhillGuitar Challenge accepted lol
Accepted
Done... what's next?
keys are 30
@@ramsezramsey2514, I think he may have meant key signatures, but even then there are 15 of those.
Good stuffs man,i love it!
Just started playing bass now,i'm a guitar player.its just the bored, need to learn bass aswell ":D
Cool
U are awesome
Hey Luke my little finger didn’t reach 15 and 17 fret of a string. What should I do to fix this.
hi Luke I like your infos. I am a Bass Player too regards Harald
This is amazing thank you so much. I consider myself intermediate and have been playing for years on and off but never went full on unfortunately (wish I did). But I’m picking it back up now since meeting a buddy who I jam out with. Your lessons are great. Question; so with these chords, you can kind of make up anything using these as a foundation? Like when it comes to fills and bass licks?
Good question @Ricky Raso - all the arpeggios in the exercise come from the chords of the major key, and you can definitely use them as a starting point if you want to play some fills, licks or solos. I'd recommend checking out this video as well if you want to start doing stuff like that: ruclips.net/video/ZXuRaC8ZjxY/видео.html
Luke from Become A Bassist awesome! Thanks for replying! I’ll def check it out
thanks bro India
Great tutorial! Can you tell me about your bass. It is a very beautiful instrument! Love that wood!
It's a Spector Euro4 or USA4 with a salted maple (believe it's maple) top.
Great exercise, thanks a lot. What is the point of playing alternately major and minor chords? Just for the feeling of how differently they are played?
Good question @Акан Рахметуллин. What I'm playing in this video is all the chords that appear in the key of C major. None of the notes are outside the C major scale. You *could* just play this exercise with 'random' chords as well, but this way, you can also learn how a key is put together, plus it sounds a little more musical.
I’ve seen people play an open string and mute the others Then seen them play an open string and not mute others at all , How do u know when to mute and when not to ! Thanks great vid btw
"Please Come Crawl Out Your Window" by Bob Dylan has. similar chord progression haha
Luke, new bassist here and absolutely love your channel! For the uninitiated, are these exercises strictly used for finger speed and dexterity, or does it help to know where all of these patterns are second nature?
It is very valuable to have the entire major scale memorized and all the component triads and 7 chords. I would recommend practicing this while naming the triads and notes as Luke is doing here. A great exercise after that would be to change the order of the chords from C Dm Em F G Am Bdim C to C F Bdim Em Am Dm G C and go in fourths for example and then you are practically walking bass.
+Durchii - Frank is absolutely right! I mention in the video that the exercise can actually help you understand music better and that's exactly what I was talking about. If you're wondering where all the chords and everything come from, check out my Ultimate Guide To The Modes - it'll clear everything up: becomeabassist.com/ug-modes/
By the way +Frank LeHouillier - great variation on the exercise. That would be a real killer too. Thanks for sharing - I'll have to try that one out.
hello,
the exercices are based on the harmonisation of the C Major scale declined in forms of seven degrees...chords used are the harmonic extension of the C Major scale...it is not told in the vidéo but it is important to undetstand the "meaning" of that and be "conscius " of what you re playing...
good vidéo nevertheless...
thanks
@luke, can you tell me how to register and get the PDF? I can’t find it in the comments. Thanks. Is the website down too?
@William Glamore - as far as I know, the site isn't down. I just checked on my end and everything seems fine. The link for the PDF is right here: becomeabassist.com/killer-bass-workout/
What would you play, if you wanna try out a new bass ?
