Bottle openers are still useful for people who don't have the hand strength, or some other disability like their sight to be able to use something like the edge of a knife to open a bottle. I'm one of those people who has nerve damage in my left arm from an accident as a child, and was also born with vision problems, so I don't trust myself to use the edge of a knife to open a bottle, so I just carry a cheap $1 bottle opener key on my keys that stay clipped to the belt loop of my jeans, and it works great for me.
Actually, can openers are for opening tin cans, not soda cans. (Okay, soda cans are tin, but you know what I mean.) The idea is to use the can opener to safely poke two holes into the can and pour the liquid out (not useful on cans with chunky food, but great for canned milk, tomato soup, etc.).
It is easy to open bottles with anything but not for people with weaker hands the gadget gives someone with weak hands the leverage they need. My sister and mom have arthritis and can't open anything without the added leverage that some gadgets provide.
