A Walk of War & Light - Walking the Norfolk Coast Mundesley to Cromer at Sunset
In this video i take an extensive walk along the Norfolk Coast during the late afternoon sun hoping to get from Mundesley to Cromer Lighthouse by Sunset.
I begin by taking a look at Mundesley Gun Placements, installed during WW2 and looking at the remains of this once important wartime lookout.
Asd we comtinue walking the beach we find discarded reminders of what was once atop the cliff edges and has since come crashong down due to coastal erosion.
We discover a former industrial railway, was it there for construction of sea defences? Or related to WW2 also?
The last section sees a spectacular light show as the sun lowers. We are treated to all manner of evening colours in the sky as we head on towards Cromer Lighthouse.

Slightly similar video as your last vid but with a few differences!!! Watching both vids at the same time!!! 😀🚂🚂🚂
Speaking of coastal erosion reminds me of Blakeney. We had really bad storms a few winters ago and the defences at Blakeney were damaged. The local council decided that the repairs would cost too much and decided to abandon the village - millions of pounds worth of property - to the elements.
UNTIL ..... someone pointed out that the salt-marshes at Blakeney were the habitat of some pink-footed, double billed, lesser spotted duck, or some-such thing and it was a protected species which meant that the council had no choice but to repair the sea defences to protect the salt-marshes irrespective of the cost. Which shows that birds are protected by legislation, but, it would seem, not people or their property.
At 7.42 the large building is Clarence House, this is (was) a residential home where my Mums Aunt was Matrion. The blue house to the left was her Uncle and Aunts house. I stayed there a lot during my childhood and can remember playing in the gun battery before they were sealed.
That's the first time I've seen inside those Mundesley batteries since 1981 when they weren't boarded up!
Love Norfolk,such a beautiful coastline..
Lovely views and area my late parents spent over 25 happy years in Abbey Park Sheringham,, fantastic visits ...
The railway was used to transport materials when the flood defences were being built.
🙂🙂
Stunning sunset. What an amazing place. Thank you for taking us with you, filming and drone second to none. You have a gift Ant.
It's amazing the colours you get from a sunset!
Thanks for walking that, lots of interest along there (I did FF the repeat middle bit!!) Interesting to see the gun emplacement, these things seem to have been forgotten about. Cracking Turner sunset, obviously doing you good🙂🙂🙂🙂 Cheers Ant 👍👍👍
Another excellent video. I had a holiday in Mundesley about 60 years ago but never saw any of what you have shown us. Many thanks.
Another amazing video ! Yes as others have said, Brilliant ! You get better and better 😀
I used to play on Mundesley beach in the 1950's and there was no railway. What I do remember is Trimingham beach was a minefield so no public entry. The beach defences were not there and I used to run down the cliff face (no fear) Up at Bacton (gas site) there were discarded military vehicles
Hi Ant, an extended version of your previous video which was amazing, this one was even more amazing, more information, fantastic shots, excellent drone footage and your enthusiasm all added up to a fantastic 27 minutes. Thank you so much.
Ant your videos are always superb but the drone footage on this was exceptional.
Really enjoyed that. I have a nice watercolour taken from the top of the cliffs, looking towards Cromer pier at sunset. Looking forward to the pier video
what a fantastic vid, the footage, the music and your knowledge added to a beautiful part of the english coastline....found it strange that there was no one else walking the beach
Great video and loved the music.
When we first went to m/dsley on holiday some 40 years ago you could go into the gun implacements... it was like a small if rough hotel. There were beds fasten to the walls which could be lifted against the wall to give more space...a trully interesting place.Sorry but we didn't take any photos.
Beautiful Ant, the sky was breathtaking, we are lucky to live here and all along the coast everyday, but you captured that sky so well, absolutely stunning,🤗🚶♂️🚶♀️another video, well done 🤗 xx
Beautiful film, well done!
nice to see you bak in Norfolk where i live
Thanks very much Robert. I've got another one to come late next week I think
Brilliant. Really enjoyed this.
Your drone shots at 0:34 and 0:41 were amazing, what a open for a video.
Another great & fantastic video of A Walk of War & Beauty - Walking the Norfolk Coast Mundesley to Cromer at Sunset!.❤❤🧡🧡💛💛💚💚💙💙💜💜🤎🤎🖤🖤
The North sea along our coastline here in Norfolk can be a gentle placid beast but at times can become like a violent maniac hell bent on destruction but we love it all the same. You've done it complete justice.
wonderful videos as always Ant thank you
Wonderful capture of the light and your excitement on experiencing it. It's truly uplifting and you put that across very well with your delivery. Thanks for sharing this with us and showing us what you found along the way. Very interesting Ant, cheers.
Stunning light and views. I may pay that area a visit next year. Thanks for excellent video
Glad you enjoyed it. It's gorgeous. Thank you for watching
Great videos as always Ant. Those bits at 6:15 minutes are pieces of old bullhead rail, the tell tale bit is at the top of a few posts have both holes drilled out for the fish plates.
A lot of photographs back then were made in black and white, because they were made for newspaper publication. This went on way into the 90s.
Great video Ant, as usual. They just keep om getting better.
At Sheringham there a bump on the cliffs and a circular concrete block this was a large RDF Station covering the North Sea, there are some articles on how this works and was manned by wrens I believe..on RUclips..
Another fantastic video trip today. The sights were breathtaking. Keep in touch, Antony! See you on the next! Cheers mate!
Thanks very much Martin glad you are okay and enjoyed it 🙂
Fabulous video Ant. In the late 60's/ early 50's on three consecutive years took our holidays in a caravan on top of the cliff at Mundesley, probably the one shown in the video. Each year the path down to the beach was different due to erosion over the winter and there was no defence from on the beach from the sea at that time. Trimmingham radar station at that time was manned by the RAF and consisted of a rotating horizontal curved antennae. Trimminham beach was partitioned off from the Mundly shore by a barbed wire fence. The army were clearing away ordnance from the Trimminham side and desposed of it with a controlled explosion proceeded by the hoisting of a red flag and the sounding of a whistle. great stuff for a young lad.
Love this video. In one of your earlier productions you walked the Grantham canal and on the section between Owthorpe and Kinoulton I spotted my father's family farm (Mackey's Farm) where he was born and where I lived once and your current video is fairly close to where I live and is where I fish. Keep them coming please!
Absolutely loved this Norfolk video! The music, sunset and drone footage is so beautiful. Am blessed to have a holiday home in Trimingham, such a beautiful coastline and you've done it justice with your video. Thank you!
Elizabeth Windsong if you can find a copy Trimingham A Singular Village written by Roger Kirk is a very interesting read.
Brilliant video really enjoy the way you show history 👍
Thank you very much Dave that's very kind 🙂
Dad served in the RAF at Trimingham in the late 50s and early 60s doing national service.
Yes there is still the listening station isn't there if that's what it's called? Thank you for watching
@@TrekkingExploration they are in the process of closing and moving the radar inland unfortunatly
@@timbonfield3589 it's being moved due to coastal erosion.
The longest and longest time lost rail you have found !
I have been in the gun placements as a child, it's completly flooded but there were still lots of old bedframes in there, they only removed the gun emplacement metal work recently.
Blimey we used to park there and walk down to beach with our kids never realised that was there. It was easier parking there and free!
Free is rare nowadays isn't it?
The railway was built after the 1953 floods which explains the old black and white photos.
Thanks very much Phillip. I definitely agree with you now since I originally filmed this 🙂
Go to mundesley every year to sandy gulls .
The railway track on the beach was used by German ww2 pows to clear the beach of mines
Can you please do a video documentary of the tunnels under Cromer the smugglers caves I've seen and been in one they mostly go under the Cromer church
Hi Guy if there is a way in then I can?
@@TrekkingExploration you're videos are very knowledgeable please Go to the nndc ask to speak with Tim Adam's he should be able to give you location's or permission to look in some places. But there is a BOM sight where the light house is there are remains of a building but I don't know what it was 🤞
@@myselfG3184 I'm up there this weekend I'll have a wander around
@@TrekkingExploration ok you may see me walking the dog out it's a pleasant part of Cromer
Bit confused Ant. Some of this I've watched before?
Yes there's a trimmed down version of the previous video in there
@@TrekkingExploration aha. Great to watch tho
