journal entry (5/6/24):
yoyoyo another film in the books. i've wanted to talk about this subject for a while, so glad i finally got round to doing it. what do you think about it? have you deleted social media or is considering quitting it? i wanna know your story with the whole social media debacle. anyway, i have so many assignments due, yet im procrastinating doing them and instead creating these films. much more worthwhile imo ahaha. imma leave it at that, i gotta go do some music-ing rn, brb (in a week with another one).

Many of us would be happy to delete social media if others did the same. It's sad that not being instantly reachable should be seen as weird or a problem, when that was a historical reality for most of human history.
But you can still use messenger and normal phone features?
Deleting social media is about removing these algorithm feeds and the time wasted on them. Not about removing reachability.
I deleted fb 4 years ago and have no problem staying in touch with anyone
@@TransientNeurotic You're right. It's just that the world can feel very lonely when you're disconnected. I don't have a lot of IRL friends so if I don't use social media I'm just more lonely than before. It's hard to find that right balance.

I miss the earlier web. There was less bullshit and more of a feeling that you could truly "log off" and return to your life.

A social life being completely based on a virtual world isn't a social life in the first place .It looks more like an escape of loneliness than having "friends" with whom you share your life . I think going off social media is a good opportunity to improve your social skills and build genuine connections in the outer world because that's what will actually be more beneficial for you .And there are plenty of people who will actually match your vibe and have the same lifestyle as you ,so you won't have to deal with people who are constantly glued to their phones. Personally deleting social media is the best thing I've ever done in my life and I'm so proud of myself for taking this step and break my addiction.
agreeeeeed, deleting social media actually was one of the better things i've done in my life, as without it i prolly wouldn't have started creating these films haha.

ive never had social media and i can relate to this on a deep level. the only friendships that stick around are the really great ones. i can't keep up with new sayings/trends without asking people and in a small way, humiliating myself. i could convince my parents to let me download the apps, but then i have to keep up with what other people post (because they already don't tell what's going on in real life) and dm them to keep friendships alive. it feels weird letting my friends post me. once i grow up, i dont know if i should get that stuff because its something that helps my family (very spread out) stay connected. with this though, i get a lot of time to sit with myself. i don't know if that many people actually like themselves these days, but i know for sure i do. there's time for hobbies and creativity and being outdoors. i'm just isolated.
dude i relate to u, especially, "i don't know if that many people actually like themselves these days" - damn, that hit hard. im glad im not the only one that feels like this but dang it sucks to hear that u feel isolated as well. surely there's somethin we can do about this
@@arikki. i think the best thing i've done to help with that is doing volunteer work/sports/remembering to get out of my geographically isolated property so i'm not literally isolated. your world gets so much smaller after having no social media, so i just kinda do what people did without screens to fill their time. (other than pinterest. yes it is the only window into the online world i have.)
hey man! i can completely relate. unless all your friends aren't on social media, it can cause FOMO which is so frustrating.
yuhhh, i mean after a while, fomo wasn't (and still isn't) the biggest thing. it's just staying connected. it rly shows who the REAL ones are

I got banned from snapchat at the end of my junior year of highschool and it literally knocked me off everyones grid. it was so depressing

I really enjoyed this video, it felt very well produced, even the goofy bits. That aside, I get it. I have never been good with social media and trends, not in the pick me way, in the tism wtf is going on way. It's very isolating when my peers are a part of a culture I can't truly grasp. In general it feels like others don't want to socialize outside of the internet.

love this video… and i relate a lot. i deleted my social medias too and have found some new hobbies, which i’m really happy about. but i do feel a lack of connection between some of my friends because, like you, im not updated with all the trends. i don’t miss the doomscrolling of social media, but i do miss the way communication felt so easy sometimes.
yuhhh, i honestly think the pro's outweigh the cons. our brains r brainrot- free (for the most part, only brain rot i put up with now is my older brother yappin)

I can really relate to this. I deleted my social media back in 2021, and initially, it felt great. However, the longing for connections eventually kicked in. I lost touch with most people, except for a few. It made me realize that many of the connections I thought were genuine were just with people who are chronically online and wouldn’t check on me otherwise. It's a mix of emotions, but I know if I go back, I'll get caught up in doom scrolling, which is even more depressing.

whenever i would (would cuz i don’t rlly have many friends anymore) go out with my friends sure we’d have fun and do things but there were the moments were there’d be silence and nothing to do and i’d still try to continue the conversation but they’d just go on their phones…
i have stricter parents so i’m not allowed social media (except yt) but all my friends can and they keep begging me “tell ur parents to get you tiktok” and they’re always talking abt tiktok like it’s some sorta obsession. I would quit social media, interent in a instant if i could but i can’t. i’m already isolated enough and i’d feel even more isolated. I just want to be a teen and go out with my friends i don’t want to sit there watching them scroll or talking abt videos they saw

the fundamentals we build our 'social life' in the modern day are broken imo. connecting with people over funny reels & liking their stories seems like social interaction but if you were to talk to those people irl would you talk about personal things eith them as you would with close friends? personally, I wouldn't. I deleted most social media apps and I do feel that loneliness you're describing. but I remind myself that the connection I'm yearning for can't be found on social media (at least not in the manner I described). it's only an illusion tricking me into doubting my decision of staying off social media.

"self improvement" youtubers rely on those who never improve lmao, because those that do, realise that consuming content (at large) doesn't help. kinda ironic but that's just how it works.
i was in that situation as well, a year ago i got into consuming al the "self improvement" videos, then after i got to a certain point, i stopped watching all the videos on how to be productive and how to 10x my life blah blah blah because i got to a point where i didn't need to watch those anymore.

You don’t need every social media account. I have Facebook but deactivated because of the like system and the boring content. I am using only messenger and if they want to talk with me they find me there or just ask my mobile number for real contact
but do they talk to u? that's the real question loll. i have an app (it's called beeper), which allows me to use instagrams dms without having instagram installed, and only 1 person chats with me fairly often. when i had instagram (the actuall app), i was on groupchats and actually interacted w/ ppl's stories and posts. maybe it's just me lol
