    In this video, we explain the ending of Luca Guadagnino's film, 'Challengers,' which stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor. Written by Justin Kuritzkes. The plot follows a professional tennis champion (Mike Faist) who plots a comeback with the help of his wife (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy who retired after an injury, as he goes up against another player (Josh O'Connor), who also happens to be his former best friend and wife's former lover.

    Interesting. I saw the ending as more of a triumph for the two boys than I did Tashi. Tashi wanted power and she wanted her husband to win and that's all she cared about. The two friends embraced each other at the end, not caring about the match, but instead wanting their friendship back that Tashi ruined.

      Art was a catalyst for that ruining. So I think it’s a combination of all their faults that caused it

      I agree. Patrick basically signaled to Art that he had sex with his wife by mimicking his serve. Patrick did this intentionally to light a fire underneath Art and rather than throwing the match like Tashi wanted him to, he wanted him to win off the strength of his own capabilities, not giving him an easy win. He realized that while Tashi was his coach and in large part the fire behind his career/success, she was also holding him back. By showing Tashi’s true colors, they’re able to realize how she got in the way of their relationship and Art was able to overcome whatever hold she’s had on him since forever.

    I think Tashi secretly knew that Patrick was going to be at the tournament and that’s why she entered Art in because she wanted him to get back into winning mode and she knew that them seeing each other again would get him fired up and want to keep playing tennis. Even though she wanted Art to have “no distractions”, she remembered how happy he was playing with Patrick and she thought that reuniting him with his best friend would help him find his passion for tennis again.

    My interpretation of the film was that Patrick loved Art, Art loved Tashi, and Tashi loved Tennis. There is no villain, but they’re all playing the game each with their own motive. I kinda saw Tashi and Patrick as wolves and Art as their pup. The queer subtleties in this film really highlight that Patrick was in it for Art, and he could get Tashi, he could get Art. But, naively I think Art wanted Tashi more than anything which lead him getting into both their heads about each other and ended sabotaging both of their lives. I think Tashi was frustrated with Patrick because she wanted a “fan” and he himself wanted to be his own boss, I think both Tashi and Patrick wanted Art for that reason, for him to be their biggest “fan”, and I think Art deep down came to realize he was comfortable with being a fan. Tashi deep down didn’t love Art tho and I think she started to realize that his life wasn’t there without Patrick. Which is why I really think deep down Tashi didn’t reach out to Patrick for herself, but for Patrick to bring back the life in Art. I think that’s why she mentions being a “home wrecker” twice when discussing Art and Patrick, because they were a partnership even if they weren’t entirely aware (mainly Art). What’s so impactful about the final scene to me is I think Art finally comes to realize Patrick is what he’s been missing, for himself and Tashi. I think in the end the three of them stick together, in what way I’m not sure, but I think it’s a realization for the three of them that the highlight of what made tennis what it was for them was each other.

  • @swoz86
    @swoz86 Месяц назад +27

    Completely agree with everything you said. Their dynamic only works when the 3 of them are together. The boys have a breakthrough when they finally decided to play tennis for themselves and not as a mean to win Tashi over, which is what Tashi wanted all along.

    This is a great story. Very complex and at the same time very understandable. My favorite part was the ending. These three are a team, a family. They need each other. Now that they’re all back together, Patrick can get the guidance he needs from Tashi so that he can get his career in a better place, Art can move forward to the U.S. Open, Patrick and Art can be best friends again, and all three of them can go back to being a family again.

    I think Patrick ends up losing on purpose. At the end, Patrick begins to jump up until he realizes that he will collide with Art so he throws the racket and catches Art. I think that shows how Patrick ultimately prioritizes Art over the tennis match, and doesn’t want to break Art. The platonic love between the boys is palpable and endearing.

    • @eremites
      @eremites Месяц назад +19

      I dont think this love is purely platonic, it's shown thru the film as Patrick goes for Art, touching him, getting him closer, feedib him, tsking his gum (the same way Tashi takes it years later) , its constant tension between them and no awkward situation after this passionate kiss they share. And obviously they both are aroused. For Tashi? for each other?maybe both. This threesome is amazing as it was said above, they complete each other, to make the best version of themselves. I wish it was the scene after credits when they enter the hotel and Patrick wants to go to his room but Tashi nods at him to join her and Art. That would be perfect

    Reading these comments I see a lot of people got different things out of the ending, and I think that is really cool. The three of them have a very complex dynamic. What I got out of the ending was that all three of them rediscovered their passion and fire both for tennis and each other. They all were dealing with complacency in their own way and isolating themselves, and it was rotting them from the inside. They need each other, they need the chaos, they need to be chasing something. .....and they for sure slept in the same hotel room that night.

    I get that Art’s jealousy was the catalyst for the drive of the film. I do have to see it again regarding the ending. Art also told Tashi that he was going retire soon no matter what happens which would be okay with Patrick but not okay with Tashi. At this point the unexpected leap over the net by Art felt like he was now able to give his heart fully to Patrick, his true friend in life.

Some moments were loud but I think that just represents the overwhelming feeling in the moment. Easily one of the top movies i’ve seen this year.

  • @eremites

    For me Art and Patrick chose each other over Tashi, over tennis. I dont think their love is purely platonic, it's shown thru the film as Patrick goes for Art, touching him, getting him closer, feeding him, taking his gum (the same way Tashi takes it years later) , it's constant tension between them and no awkward situation after that passionate kiss they shared. And obviously they both are aroused. For Tashi? for each other? maybe both. It's hinted thru the film that Patrick is bisexual - he got girls and boys on Tinder, he said explicitly that he would let Tashi f*ck him with a tennis racket. He's open. But mostly and deeply, most of the time, not only on physical level, he's into Art.
    This threesome is amazing as it was said above, they complete each other, to make the best version of themselves. I wish it was the scene after credits when they enter the hotel and Patrick wants to go to his room but Tashi nods at him to join her and Art. That would be perfect

    When Tashi kept saying to art you can beat him about Patrick. I don’t think she was talking about tennis. I think she was talking about the realtionship, yes he can beat Patrick but only if he lets out his rage and jealously. Which so apparent when she started seeing Patrick after art lost their match. However, I think it’s rare for art to win, I think art was never working hard enough at tennis. But art tapped into his jealously outside of the game and choose to beat Patrick at getting the girl. Especially for the fact that he was outwardly pursuing tashi when she was with Patrick.

    1- Art had low self-esteem, he knew that his wife did not love him, when he tells her "I love you" and she only answers: "I know", Tashi sees it as a $ project, in the film it is clear that Art did have some success and was doing well financially when he asked her to be his coach, there was a reason they had advertising contracts. 2- Patrick is wild, he just wants to live and Tashi couldn't tame him like he did with Art and I think that's why he still loves him, even though he treats him like shit and spits on him 3- At the end of the movie when Art almost jumps on top of the net, there is a confusing gesture that seems like he wants to hit Patrick with his racket and then the hug, and on the other hand Tashi screams and his face is rather angry when he watches them hug, it is as if he does not want anyone to win, let's remember that her love is Tennis and that both of them lose was not in her plans, she stayed with the winner, and now Art and Patrick make peace
