Well, that was a combo of shooting over cranked on a Phantom camera, with some practical furniture and stunt men on wires being pulled upward, then we created a series of mathematical and physically accurate shattered and dust particle elements using Houdini and bifrost for Maya. It was a bit more than AE :)
Amazing take on iron fist I just watched the series and I think you got it on point thanks for making this I really had trouble finding any other good iron fist tutorials

1. instead going for the truble and getting out the black background in photoshop you can export as rgb+alpha. 2. i think you can track a mask in after effects...so you can make the hand rotate a bit. 3. masks are now able to be not even in their feather. so you can do the photoshop part in AE. 4. sorry for my english 5. your videos are still fantastic!

+AwesomeSauce all good dude - I did some study with low light and holding different wattage lights in my hand - it's crazy that no bones show up and only the surface veins really show up. The tutorial doesn't show just how custom you can make that vein map - you can dial in a lot more detail if you want 😉

But still props to you for developing your own technique!
You can totally get that kind of detail with my technique - it just takes a bit more patience when designing the illumination map in photoshop. The one in the tutorial and the teaser were roughly 10 minutes work. Imagine what you could do with layering and a few hours work! One of the downfalls of weekly tutorials done in my spare time - I don't always have enough time to make the shots that I have in my head :(
You are right there, forget about the possibility of layering several photos on top of etch other. I imagine it would be much harder to do for a closing hand. I know how it it as i also have a fulltime job and do videos in my spare time. I also have 2 daughters, so i record my stuff after 10pm. :)

I used a yellow lamp, and turned it up towards my hand when it was supposed to glow, and added the effects in post. Saves a ton of time!
