THE ORIGINAL GUENTHER STEINER! The Downfall of the Minardi Team (2000-2005)

  • Minardi was a team everyone had a soft spot for. They never won, they very rarely scored points, they were often last, but they were giving it a red hot go that captured the hearts of many that watched F1.
But in 2000, the team was sold in a bid to keep it alive, and it was purchased by the very vocal Australian Paul Stoddart, who seemed to constantly be battling with the FIA because he felt that they were out to end the team just because they weren't as rich as everyone else.
So what happened? Let's find out...

Fun fact: Alonso spent night and day in the shop helping them build the car to get it done on time to make the grid. Fernando is handy with a wrench. It’s unkind to say “they acted like they just won the championship.” I’d say, for what they were working with, that feat was more impressive than most of the teams winning a race.

Minardi had the Ferrari engines for 1 year: 1991. Unfortunately except two 4th places nothing good came from it because they lost one of their sponsors to Ferrari. And Martini put his car on P2 at the US GP in 1990 which was wild back then. The entire grid at that race was wild with several backmarkers in the Top 10 and Moreno in the EuroBrun outqualifying a Ferrari

Yeah Minardi always did good work on a very limited budget.
I think if they got the Mugens for 1995 things may have been different - I still don't understand the deal, but Aguri Suzuki has said himself that Briatore lied to him/Mugen about the second Ligier seat. He thought he had it for the full season, not knowing Brundle had already been signed. Briatore didn't tell Brundle either.

    • @ivaneurope
      @ivaneurope 6 месяцев назад +1

And considering that Gitanes (and later Gauloises) were still sponsoring the team Briatore couldn't ditch Panis either, because a French driver needs to be in a French team (even though it was now co-owned by an Italian in Briatore and a Scot in Tom Walkinshaw). And I'd argue that Walkinshaw vouched for Brundle to be in the team given their history together in both F1 and sportscars (Brundle did race for TWR Jaguar) and I assume Briatore didn't tell his business partner either, which may've forced Walkinshaw to pivot towards the Arrows team for 1996.

I still remember the ranting outburst from Stoddart in 2005. First keeping it restrained, but when reporter Jack Plooij noticed held back anger, commentator Olav Mol reminded Paul that he could swear on Dutch television, and then he went absolutely berserk. In hindsight, I guess years of frustration about the politics in F1 came out in three minutes of ranting. And even then, he reminded us that he found the backmarker racing fun.
Giancarlo Minardi was the body of the team, but in the final years of the team, Stoddart was the soul. Absolute madman.

In your list of other notable Minardi drivers I'm surprised you don't list Alessandro Nannini who had previously served Minardi's F2 team while also driving for the factory Lancia team in the World Sportscar Championship, setting the fastest lap at Le Mans in 1984 in the Lancia LC2 and later that year winning the Kyalami 6 Hours in the LC2 alongside the late Bob Wollek. Nannini as an F1 rookie regularly outpaced his more experienced team mate Andrea de Cesaris in 1986 and had no trouble out-pacing Adrián Campos (another of the more money than talent brigade) in 1987 before going to Benetton in 1988.
Fun Fact: Alessandro Nannini was actually Minardi's first choice to be their Formula One driver in 1985. However, for 1985 FISA did not grant Nannini the Super Licence required to be able to race in F1. This meant Minardi had to go with their other F2 driver Pierluigi Martini who did have a Super Licence having substituted for the suspended Artyon Senna at Toleman in the 1984 Italian Grand Prix.

Where did you get that Tim Hortons mug.....? That is Canada's coffee store....but hey...Minardi won two races...both the Italian GP (as Toro Rosso and Alpha Tauri....)

Would the teams even let Jeff Bezo try to enter F1!? If they were scared of Andretti they'd be even more afraid of Amazon GP!

If F1 wants Privateers again then they are going to have to do something about the astronomical costs, more than just a cost cap.... I would argue that having machines more spec would be preferable but then that sounds like this American single-seater series.
    Not going to happen.

I dont get the hate that gunther receives online along with haas. They have their problems and usually are 8th - 10th cone the end of the season. I have noticed a big rise in hate towards haas since andretti has wanted to join f1, with a lot of hate coming from new american/dts viewers given that haas are american and many think andretti deserves to be on the grid more than haas.

Edit: sorting by newest, they're the first -5 comments-
Edit 2: actually, first 6 comments. Missed one
To say something that actually has something to do with the video, i'll add that i was lucky-enough to see a Minardi M02, but sadly it wasn't running (unlike the Williams FW07 doing a few laps that same day)
