You said it yourself, Molly. Palpatine is a zombie. He's dead. Anakin killed him. He only comes back to life when he takes the life force of Rey and Ben.
The Sith line always passes from master to apprentice, but Anakin screwed that up for them, so the Sith Spirit had to resort to possessing the corpse of Palpatine.
I love this explanation, because it's consistent visually as well as allows Anakin to have brought balance to the Force. He DID destroy the Sith. And by visually, I mean that Palpatine looked markedly different, he was decomposing and had blue lips.

I love the movie so this isn't a criticism, but I don't think working with the story group should be optional. They're supposed to be protectors of the canon. They're there to make sure everything makes sense. The whole purpose of them is to prevent any new canon Star Wars stories that contradict something already established in canon. It shouldn't be up to the creator to decide if they want to adhere to the canon or not.

    • @popburnsy3207
      @popburnsy3207 4 года назад

I think the story group was always going run into this issue. Similar to the Legends/old EU, where the films were the top level and everything else fell into supplementary tiers of legitimacy. It was only a matter of time before a filmmaker stepped in and decided something was wholly different than things previously established and the story group is going to have to patch things up to make everything fit. I'm just surprised it seems to have stumbled into this sort of situation as quickly as it has
Of course, this would be easier to manage, if they set any following films in the distant future or past from the current(prequel and sequel inclusive) era, so they have a lot more room to do whatever they want

      @fa1ry_juice 4 года назад +10

@@gavinallerton3414 Yeah I agree. Maybe the Palpatine Reveal changes the one in TLJ a bit, but that doesn't necessarily affect the message of these movies. Rey's past doesn't decide her future. She does. Her Family being connected to the dark side doesn't have to mean she doesn't have a choice. Especially in TRoS, she has actual character flaws and doesn't believe in herself. I can understand why people don't like the issues in the ST, but you can't just be so ignorant that you don't even want to acknowledge any good is in them just because you want to hate them so badly. I'm talking about people like ShakenMike, because someone literally told them what they need to hear to not hate every aspect of the ST, and he just ignored it. I'm not saying people aren't allowed to have their opinions, but being ignorant doesn't make anyone look better.

The sequel trilogy in my mind is about those who learn the wrong lessons from history are doomed to repeat them. There are two sides in these movies. One is kylo who says burn the past and forget it to start over. Rey looks at the past through Luke, han, and Leia to learn from them for answers to the future. This is also evident in Poe and Lando. Asking how did they defeat an empire. This is a good example of history in general. When people don’t learn from others mistakes then history repeats itself.

Rey has to deal with abandonment (ep.7) and then realizing she might be nobody (ep 8) before realizing it's actually much worse (ep.9) and resolving it by realizing family is more than blood relations. Kylo has to deal with rejecting his family (ep.7/8) to rejoining them and reaccepting the solo name. I really dug this trilogy and I hope time helps its popularity like the prequels.

Also, this isn't Han's ghost coming to see him, it was Ben remembering his father. He says, "you're just a memory" so it was all in his mind - and he has no memory of his grandfather.

Me, a random internet fan’s, answers to these questions (though of course no one knows for sure yet) - Spoilers obviously:
1.) I don’t think it is normally possible to resurrect with force heal, that strikes me as something only possible since the two were a Diad in the force and had such a strong connection.
2.) I got the sense that Palpatine’s body was actually very much dead and that we saw a sort of sith equivalent of a force ghost thanks to Plagues’ technique in which, instead of becoming a force ghost and one with the force as the Jedi do, the sith spirit remains present but confined to a dead body.
3.) I loved the Han scene.
4.) Guessing Ashoka is dead as well sadly.
5.) I agree, yellow just sort of separates her from the old Jedi order.
    6) RIP Hux. I thought it was cool that he was the spy but I don’t know that there was much more to do with the character so I liked that he furthered Pryde’s story instead.
    7) Force lightening was cool and a nice little foreboding to her heritage.
    8) I mean Luke was a myth at that point so not sure it would have a huge effect but I’m sure he inspired some people, especially Rey which was obviously important.
    9) I like Rey Skywalker, sort of continues the idea of being a ‘nobody’ in TLJ but in a different way, proving that your family heritage and past doesn’t matter and it is your choices that matter.
    10) Seems like just a puppet. The Snoke in the vats were scarred exactly the same so yeah, just puppets.
    11) Not sure about the people in the arena but I would have to guess that yes they’re either weird cultists who worship the sith or they’re actually spirits or something. I feel like the fleet is probably either first order soldiers or like an elite empire section that palpating took with him or something.
    12) I think the fact that Palpatine killed himself technically and that the entire force of the Jedi was used against him stops the passing down of his spirit now and his body was also destroyed so his spirit doesn’t stay there.
    13) Yeah Finn has the force, I think that is what he wanted to tell Rey.
    14) Yeah Exegol was calling.
    15) I mean the X-wing door isn’t a huge deal I guess, not really an explanation I can think of unless they just say the door isn’t actually an X wing but just some other scrap, maybe Luke had spares in the back. Would have liked a bit more care for the wider universe like comics and books but they are also all things that can quite easily be explained away or made to fit.
    16) Got to say I would have adored at least Luke and Anakin to be next to Rey (and would have liked Ben Solo there too) at the end but I’m still very happy with the voices.
    17) I don’t know that we can definitively say that there was absolutely no plan for the sequels, it felt like most of the main beats were there. Sure I would’ve like a bit more creative control and vision on those beats and the smaller plot points but I personally really loved this trilogy. I feel like this trilogy was all about forging your own destiny and not letting your bloodline or your past in general dominating who you are.
    18) Yeah, I’m not one who thinks that absolutely everything needs to be explained in the film because some of it isn’t really necessary to the story being told. That said, in the novelisation and other mediums I would like some answers for how the Emporer survived for sure and for those gaps to be filled when there is more time to do so and for the more curious fans to get these answers.
    19) Would love Luke and Leia training stuff more than anything. Hot take that I know can never happen but I’m stubbornly praying that Ben Solo just got yanked into the world between worlds without his clothes for some reason when he disappeared haha.
    20) People will absolutely warm up to it. I personally loved it and I’m already seeing people warming up to it. Of course some people won’t and that’s fine, you like what you like, but I think when the shock dies down people will warm to it at least a bit!

As much as I wanted to see a whole mess of Force Ghosts, I have to ask: Then what? There's a few scenarios I can envision.
1.) Would you really be okay with them trying to fight Palpatine, while he just lightning zaps them? If he does lightning zap them, what happens? Can you hurt a Force Ghost? Do they have Force Ghost Lightsabers? What can THOSE do? It would open a huge can of worms, and basically end up being a bunch of ghosts killing Palpatine FOR Rey, instead of her doing it.
2.) They'd just stand behind her, and be present like at the end of Harry Potter. That would have been boring.
3.) They'd all lay hands on her, which would be a weird crowded thing, but it's my favorite idea. She's getting zapped, Luke, Leia, and Ben's ghosts put their hands on her shoulders, Then Anakin and Yoda and Obi-Wan join in, then Qui-Gon, and some others we recognize, including Ahsoka, Kanan, and Ezra, then more and more. I'm imagining a great overhead shot of lightning coming in at one end, and a fan of Force Ghosts spreading out behind Rey. (Visually, the scene would almost look a little like the Holdo Maneuver, with the streak and the debris spreading out.)
But this is the problem with Star Wars. It's been a problem since really, 1980, but even moreso in 1999. We all had headcanon as soon as we left the theater about the Clone Wars, or if Luke and Leia got together, or if Han and Chewie were going to stick around. In 1999, we all had expectations of what the prequels were going to be. We had 20 years of built up EU and imaginations of the First 3 Episodes. And people shat all over the prequels, and now all over the sequels, because what we imagine is so ingrained that we only see what WE WANT the movies to be, and when we don't get it, we don't like it. And then we start picking it apart immediately, rather than enjoying it for a couple hours.

I enjoyed the movie. It had flaws, but I was entertained. The only thing that bothers me is that when Disney wiped the EU out, they said ALL content from then on was going to be consistent with the development of the Story Group overseeing all canon throughout the media. It seems JJ threw that out the window and it's a shame, because up to this movie, it seemed like the SW universe was at least lore consistent. Now it's going to take a bunch of hand waving and spin to correct the lore Ep9.

  • @collegebro85

What a lot of people are not considering is the whole “unanswered questions” aspect has been done before...during the original trilogy, we got no answers as to who this Emperor really was and how he came into power. No explanation as to what happened during the Clone War nor how Luke and Leia were split up or even how Vader was the father. We were told things in each film and had to wait years and be exposed to numerous explanations be fleshed out...that is what Star Wars is about!
It will never be something you watch once or twice and have all your answers. It has lasted 40+ years because people need to dissect and dive into the lore over and over!!

    • @DarthRelkew

About halfway through the video, and I really enjoy (both of) your analysis. The fandom has been a little rough to take over the past couple years, so to have you guys analyze things as I would - take the good and the bad and just either say "I liked that, I didn't like that, etc" is so refreshing. So, thanks for all of your videos, I'm a happy new subscriber.
As for my thoughts on TROS, I enjoyed almost everything (and I enjoy it more the more I think about it), but I think a lot of what's talked about here - and a lot of what's been talked about since TFA came out - hasn't been touched on in *any* sort of media because of the secrecy behind the films. Like, normally we'd get a comic book, game, novel, SOMETHING to explain why something happened, why someone didn't do what they thought they would, or whatever... but to keep things close to their chest, Disney (I think rightfully) decided to wait.
Of course, now the naysayers will say things like "oh of course, they're trying to retcon things by explaining this and that" or whatever, but that's the kind of thing I've always loved about Star Wars. I'm looking forward to the future, to say the least!
Anyway, carry on. Thanks for the videos!

About the Force Ghost, I wonder if one of the rules is you can only see the one you've met before they died and turn to be force ghosts. Like Luke saw Anakin, Yoda, Obi-wan in ROTJ because he met them before dead. If my theory is right then it makes sense that Anakin's physical ghost is not in this movie because Rey never met Anakin before (although I wish to see Anakin at least). A Sith master’s end goal is to be slain by their apprentice so in a way they can line forever. Palpatine himself didn’t die, but all the Sith masters before him did, in this way Plagueis did survive in a way. It’s why Palpatine is the only character seemingly incapable of redemption, it’s because he’s part himself and part the culmination of all the hateful, vengeful, broken, prideful, fearful Sith that came before him. That’s what he means by “I’ve died before”, the last time this Sith master died was when Palpatine killed Plagueis

So here's my idea for Palpatine surviving:
He had the holocron/pathfinder in his secret chamber on the Death Star which shows the way to Exegol.
Throughout The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker we see Rey and Ren "Force Teleport" objects, from rain drops to chains to whole lightsabers. Now this was most likely due to their strange connection which according to Palpatine was very rare. What if Sidious had learnt the same or a similar power, too, and what we see at the end of Return of the Jedi is actually not him dying but Force Blasting himself to Exegol. Might have taken a toll, leaving him near death or turning him into a zombie or something.

After watching all three episodes and especially this last one, I feel that one of the major points of this trilogy was to show us Leia's importance in defeating Palpatine. The OT showed us Luke's journey, but always left me wondering why Leia never seemed as important to defeating Palpatine as Luke did. Anakin had twins, and Rey was able to defeat Palpatine only with the help from both Luke and Leia, adding Leia's lightsaber to the final battle really stressed that point in my opinion. Now I feel as though seeing the twins born at the end of Revenge is more impactful because I now know it'll take just as much effort in the force from both of them to defeat Palpatine.

What happened to Norra Wexley/Antilles since Wedge was there? What happened to the rest of black squadron (especially kare since snap died)? What happened to the leadership from Resistance Reborn (general Rieeken, Ransolm Casterfo, etc.)? Why was Maz there, I thought she said she wouldn't join the Resistance in Resistance Reborn? Why was R2 flying with Poe, rather than BB-8? Did Gallius Rax destroy the empire for no reason if Palpatine was alive? Also do you think project luminous (whatever it is) could explain some of these new ideas about the force?

    • @andrewxu3602
      @andrewxu3602 4 года назад

In hindsight, Resistance Reborn had nothing to do with The Rise of Skywalker.
Maz Kanata refuses to join the Resistance in the novel, and is suddenly part of the Resistance in the movie.
In The Last Jedi, the Resistance sends out a distress signal and no one responds. The movie suggests that it's because people don't care enough to join the fight, while RR retcons this by revealing that the First Order was rounding up and labelling "subversives" that would've joined if not for them being arrested.
TROS ignores this. Poe references the Crait distress signal as if RR never happened.

I thought the message of this trilogy was going to be about how our past does not define us and we can always go back to the bright side of the force by learning from the mistakes we made, through the story of ben solo. But in killing him, it seems that the deaths of han, luke, and Leia did nothing but allow rey to come back to life. And for me, though rey has found a new family, no one understands the traumas of her past and knows her completely, only ben. That is why they had such a strong bond and although in many ways they were opposites, that would be what was going to bring balance to the force. So for me this movie though it was fantastic in many ways failed in the end to not complete the message of hope that was being told throughout the saga. Even though the sacrifice was a beautiful and tragic gesture of love and redemption, I wish the triology had a happy ending for the last skywalker. Ben really deserved happiness with rey :(
