SpyderX Pro - Unboxing, Setup, First Impressions - Calibrating the Monitor on my iMac with Datacolor

  • Datacolor sent me the SpyderX Pro Create kit to use and review a few weeks ago, just in time for my iMac and my MacBook Pro to die. So since I had to reinstall all my software and recalibrate my monitors, I figured I would record the process so you could follow along. Watch as I unbox, setup, test, and give you my first impressions of the Datacolor SpyderX Pro monitor calibration tool. Datacolor did provide the gear for review but they did not sponsor this video.

    Let me know if you have any questions about the SpyderX Pro or calibration one general :)

      Yeah, question! Is your iMac retina screen? I have an iMac Retina 5k and I NEED to calibrate my screen but I keep seeing that it's a bad idea to use Spyder on retina screens! Any suggestions?

      Hey! I have an Epson XP-970 and print on Epson Archival Matte paper... I use the 'EPSON XP-970 MATTE' ICC profile for my photoshop files and select 'photoshop manage colours' ... does this all sound correct-ish? Thanks so much!

    I have the SpyderX Pro. It will remind you when it's time to recalibrate. A little message box will pop up not long after you start your computer to remind you it's time. I'm so glad I have it.

    For me, since 90%+ of my work is used online, sending photos to other devices such as phones and tablets is clutch. Most people keep the screens of their devices way too bright and I need to see what the photos will look like in the real world. I still calibrate my main monitor with an X-rite ColorMunki, but that really only tells me what the images are supposed to look like.

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  22 дня назад +1

      There are a lot of factors here. File type, color space, paper type (this can completely change the colors of an image). Printing is a complicated journey, but it’s better the more you learn

      @@GaryHughesOfficial I print a jpeg file after editing the raw file and thru ps producing the jpeg. I use a paper profile to print. I use a brand new Epson P700 printer, so I have eliminated it. My iMac is a couple years old. I just don’t know where to start. I thought Spyder X Pro would sink printer, profiles and result in syncing all to match monitor. Probably wishful thinking on my part.

      Funny enough, that’s still not quite enough info to figure out the problem. I know, I’m sorry about that it’s just true. It sounds like you might be missing a few pieces of fundamental knowledge when it comes to printing (and that’s okay!) so maybe I can point you in the right direction. Follow Eric Joseph and find anything you can in his methods, he really breaks it down beautifully. • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  3 года назад +1

      To be fair, it’s a very similar set up and the results seem comparable. The SpyderX pro is quite a bit less expensive, though. So there’s that to consider. I have both of them and think both do a fine job.

    • @NeAr1986
      @NeAr1986 Год назад +1

      @@GaryHughesOfficial The proflles work perfect, but as their support says, Apple has hidden the normal “MacOS System Preferences” ability to switch between ICC profiles for the internal display of the 14“ & 16" MacBook Pro 2021 with the Liquid Retina XDR Display, which use their “preset” system, the most convenient way to switch profiles is to use the SpyderUtility’s “Profile Management” feature (only SpyderX Pro & SpyderX Elite) to do that instead. I prefere a more integrated experience with MacOs, but it's not that terrible in the end...

    Am I supposed to have the mac function "true tone" switched on or off when I calibrate/after I calibrate? Or does it not matter so long as I stay consistent (always on or always off)? Basically true tone changes your monitor's color temperature when the ambient light in the room changes. It's cooler during the day and warmer at night. I assume the answer is to turn that off before calibrating but when I turn it off my monitor color goes crazy cool (way too blue). Thoughts?

    I just got done using Spyder X Pro to calibrate my ASUS Monitor on my PC. I noticed the sRGB gamut was 100% and the AdobeRGB was 79%. Is there any significance to that? Since I am using Photoshop and dealing with digital images for the most part, should I use Adobe RGB or just use the sRGB since it has the higher color gamut?

      @@GaryHughesOfficial thanks for the reply! i have a benq and a lg ultrawide. it seems the default profiles are so much better matching than when i calibrate them with the spyder x pro. so sad.

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  2 года назад

      Those are likely two very different monitors, honestly. It isn't possible to get them to match exactly. This is from years of using two different monitors until about a year ago I switched to dual BenQ SW27I. When using two different monitors, the best bet is to calibrate them for different uses. For example, calibrating the LG for video and web images and the BenQ for photos and printing. Every individual pro monitor is tuned for different uses with sometimes vastly different capabilities. If you are doing straight photography and want two identically accurate monitors, you will want to consider getting two identical monitors. Otherwise use each one to their strengths. I have also found over time that the SpyderXPro has trouble being consistent in it's calibration. The X-Rite i1 (not called the Calibrite) has given me much better, more consistent results. You can pick them up used pretty easily, good luck!
