But at the same time, we try to maintain a functioning society. That's why people who are not at risk trying to live as normal as we can. So that those who are at risk kan stay protected at home.

    I would like to underline one thing that i feel is missing from this clip: Anders Tegnell has over and over again underlined that the reason Sweden chose to not lock down etc. is because it is not sustainable in the long run. Since Sweden got the Covid-19 pretty early it was pretty much out of control by the time anyone had figured out what was going on. So instead of trying to nip it in the bud (it was already too late for that) Sweden opted for a solution that it would be able to keep up for a long period of time, assuming that the Covid-19 was going to stick around for quite som time. Sweden simply opted for a route that would be acceptable for the swedes for a long period of time while not completely overcrowding the hospitals in doing so.
    Wether or not this was a good strategy or not remains to be evaluated. It is too soon to draw any conclusions at this time.
    In regards to the high death toll of elderly people this seems to stem from the fact that the elderly care (which was more or less locked down) was ill prepared for the situation and were lacking in routines as well as materials. It does at this time seem unlikely that a lock down of the rest of the society would have changed those numbers significantly but again, only time will tell.

    In contrast, New Zealand locked down early and firmly and had lots of testing, now they've eliminated covid from their territory.

    • @zulupox
      @zulupox 4 года назад +16

      New Zealand has done great, but remember it is a very remote island. I guess the combination of quick tracking down and testing of the early cases and the fact that not that many people visit that country anyway made it far easier to control early spread.
      I think that one big reason for the big spread in Sweden has been that mid February is one of Sweden's biggest winter holidays, and thousands of Swedes went skiing in Italy, just as the corona outbreak peaked over there.
      This virus spreads very unevenly even within a country. In Sweden we have neighboring counties, where one has been spared and the other has been hit hard. And no apparent reason can be found.

      @@sMASHsound What you see is this false concept of believing that now the majority of people are safe, when it did cost lives already which could have been prevented entirely by waiting for vaccines. Not to mention there is no guarantee that the next season's mutation will have full effectiveness, that's why our flu vaccines have to be updated constantly to get more than partial effectiveness.
      And we see in America now a lot of leaders desperate to reopen pointing at Sweden and claiming it could work for them. Well, again, Sweden has a lot of things that America just does not. An amazing public health care system that is affordable, and lower population density namely. Staying open like Sweden for America would have been a disaster greater still than what we have seen, whereas Sweden still had a high per capita infection rate and a dramatic increase in deaths, they just had a better medical system in place that was under less total strain due to the population dispersion and quality and affordability of care. So how about those American leaders put down some widespread amazing affordable public health care first before they start talking like they can pull off a Sweden?

    Thank you for this attempt to a balanced report. One important thing that needs to be pointed out: At least two times in this piece the reporter says that Sweden has not succeeded in containing virus. The Swedish strategy was never to contain the virus. It has all along been to limit the speed of the spread of the virus so as not to overload th health care system. At the end of the day almost everyone will catch it, the question is how rapid the spread and will the health care system have capacity to care for the worst cases.
    I have had it, as has my family and many of my friends. No big deal really. Two families in my circle of friends had some breathing difficulty but not so bad that they were recommended hospitalization. All of us (the friends who have had it) have been home from work 2-3 weeks. All but one have now recovered fully. I don't know anyone who has died of it. But I do have friends of friends who have had to be in ICUs and who could have died if they hadn't gotten the care they needed.
    Oh, by the way - yes I live in Sweden.

      An objective of not containing the virus in the belief that almost everyone will catch it and then hoping there will be herd immunity is very high risk. First of all most countries, including Sweden are a long way from the infection levels (60-90%) needed for herd immunity. Latest study in Stockholm was about 7% infection, so many more to infect and many more unfortunately to die. Also we still don't know whether herd immunity occurs with this virus. You get it with some, with others immunity is very limited and only temporary. It is not automatic that almost everyone will catch it if you have a mitigation strategy that reduces new infections to very low levels and then are able to isolate new cases as they emerge.

    A family losing their business, rise in domestic violence, depression, suicide, children growing up in a reality of fear... the lockdown has its damages, and for someone reason no one wants to have a look at that.
    I haven't seen a study yet to compare the damages of no lockdown and the damages of having a lockdown. Yes, it's horrible to see elderly people die, but does it also make sense to sacrifice the young to protect the elderly? It's not so straightforward.

We can point out other countries all we want such as Sweden 🇸🇪 but at the end of the day America 🇺🇸 simply doesn’t have the infrastructures as they do. As a nation, like so many other across the globe, we each have to work with what we have in place, with the hope of making it better. The real problem lies in the fact as a people we are to complacent in not wanting to be bothered with creating change, we just want change to come our way. Complacency is our biggest problem, that is the enemy from within that causes us to succumb to our everyday woes as a nation.

Today South Dakota has 115 deaths with only 7,890 confirmed cases still the lowest per hundred thousand than any State or European country! Governor Noem recommended South Dakota residents wear masks from the start even when our Federal health so called experts said not to! And day 2-14 is paid by the employer which in turn usually have a sick leave insurance that's usually 6 % of salary costs for every employee, every month, all year round, no matter if they get sick or not. So I would say sick leave is a bad idea because it's so expensive. Or at least 80 % sick leave is stupid since I know a lot of people who abuse it. I personally think it should be somewhere around 33-50 % so less people abuse it and it should be covered completely by the government - not by the employer.

      Fox news reported the Chinese virus from the start! So NY Governor telling people to enjoy going to NY in February 10th? That Biden said that Trump was racist closing flights from China and South Korea Jan 30th? On February 11th Polosi was in San Francisco's China town telling everybody that there is no disease here? NY Senator Shumer calling Trump racist for calling the virus the China virus? On December 27th, I saw on Fox News a virus specialist in China warning the rest of the world that China has a very bad flu virus that is the worst he ever seen! The next day Trump was on Fox News saying he is very concerned with this virus and asking China for more information! That specialist was never seen again and Trump never got any true information from China only BS from the WHO! This post was referring to Sweden not being locked down but really referring to their health plan to put down Americas health system? What about comparing Sweden to South Dakota?? As of June 24th, Sweden had 5023 deaths 3612 of those over 70 years old were as in South Dakota they had only 54 deaths 36 over 70 years old! Today South Dakota has 115 deaths with only 7,890 confirmed cases still the lowest per hundred thousand than any State or European country! Governor Noem recommended South Dakota residents wear masks from the start even when our Federal health so called experts said not to! A Doctor friend of hers recommended Ultra Violet lights to disinfect surfaces in schools, churches, factories and restaurants! This was implemented after the Meat packing plant infection outbreak. Someone also came up with restaurants putting ultra violet lights directed at the ceiling only with Patel fans circulating the air killing the viruses that are in the air.

    The intention was not to contain the virus, once the virus was out it became an exercise is in futility to contain and limit it unless we turned our entire environment into a sterile laboratory, which would do more harm than good, Sweden will come out in a better position overall in the aftermath of this event, the only mistake Sweden made was not to isolate the more vulnerable in their society and they acknowledged and apologised for this!

    • @Kenny-bj2zq
      @Kenny-bj2zq 4 года назад

      Agreed the best thing would to keep death rate low would to have focused on the health care of the elderly and just let the virus go through. You can't contain it you can't keep your borders closed forever and eventually people have to work in order to provide food and a roof over their head.
      The Unites States has thousand of flights everyday from different cities to different countries much harder to try and contain any virus. Let this be a lesson for the younger generation prepare now because they will be another pandemic in the next 20 years that will probably be worse then the one we are currently going through.

    my take as a US citizen. Sweden showed you can manage COVID without locking down. But you have to keep it away from Nursing homes. There were four US states that didn't go on lockdown and they have fared relatively well. But none of those states have more than 1/3 of the population of Sweden. (the largest state that didn't go on lockdown has a population of 3 million)

    I’m a Swede - before comparing remember this. We are a tiny population (10 M) spread out over a long narrow country. It’s also too early to tell if our approach was good or bad. That said - trusting people is a good start.

    • @olnappy

      American politics doesn't want citizens to trust one another, their push is to create division, citizens against citizens.
      By example just look at the visual showing of dems vs repubs. The hate and disdain appears real, even its mostly acting. Citizens believe its real for sure.

    Great film on where Sweden went wrong - & where it went right.
    The only welfare that most Republicans (& many Democrats as well) respect is either corporate welfare, or welfare for the wealthy.
    A couple of exceptional Republicans that were much better in this regard are (& were) Rand and Ron Paul, both who rejected (to a significant degree) subsidized capitalism and bloated military budgets.
    So regardless of their rather unwise rejection of some of the public health policies like lockdowns (just as Sweden did), they should - in other areas - be praised for attempting to stop the extreme waste of taxpayer money that could have been used by taxpayers (or the government) on life supporting measures.
    Rand Paul was the only Senator to co-sponsor one of Tulsi Gabbard’s anti-imperialist bills.

    What is the biggest diffece is how you count people that died of corona. In Norway for example they do not count people in eldery homes that died. In Russia they do say that people died of heart or lungfailure. In Sweden we have a problem (had it for years) with the eldery homes since it went from public to private own homes.
