Bristol was to the IHRA drag racing fan what Indy was to the NHRA. There might be only one Indy, but there was only one true Bristol race, even though the facility based in Bristol, Tenn., usually hosted two events per season.
In 1978, Larry Carrier decided to cease his procedure of paying the top name drivers money to show up and race his showcase event. Instead, he put all of that unpaid money in a pot and made this event the richest nitro event in the world for the era, even more money than Indy. At $20,000 to win, the IHRA Spring Nationals was the race to win.
The pot was raised to $30,000 by 1983, and in this rare video, you will see the names of the sport including Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, Tom "Mongoose" McEwen, Richard Tharp, Gary Beck, Lee Shepherd and Bob Glidden mix it up with the good ole boys of the IHRA.
What makes this video even rare is the fact there is no commentator, or color offered in the run by run. There are pit reporters, and the sounds of the PA announcer.

Thx. Really appreciate the authentic chair/hinge squeaks. A lil comic relief thinking of the guy in the booth cringing every time.

What a big difference in video technology from 1983 compared to today's technology this entire video was blurred

I need to add this. I noticed that Gary Beck seemed to not have the Miller Lite name on his ride. I remember from videos of NHRA events at this time he was part of the Larry Minor Miller team. Guess in the IHRA Gary raced on his own and in the NHRA he flew the Miller Lite name & Larry Minor banner

Good morning Mr Prudhomme, this is your final round wake-up call....hello?....are you there Mr Prudhomme?? 😵 LOL! 😂
Snake was & will alway's be "The Man" but I think he was distracted by the twin straw's stick'n out his nostrils in the final round! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I hope this was the only time IHRA did this format. Cause man it just didn’t feel right not hearing commentary during the race

@@larryphillips7349 well it was tough to keep track of who sometimes. And obviously it didn’t work too well since after this event every event forward had commentary.
