Travel back in time for the final season of the IHRA's Winston sponsorship.
The IHRA was founded in 1971 by Larry Carrier and Carl Moore, and grew into a worthy opponent for the long established NHRA, and the AHRA. The then Bristol, Tenn.-based sanctioning body was known for thinking outside of the box with its procedures, many of which were adopted by the NHRA and remain in existence today.
This episode is epic. You will see all kinds of veterans such as Kenny Bernstein, Mark Oswald, Ed "The Ace" McCulloch and Scott Kalitta.
The Pro Stock field is loaded down with the veterans such as Bob Gldden, Rickie Smith, Bruce Allen, Roy Hill and Frank Iaconio.
You'll also see an up and coming Darrell Alderman as well as teenage drag racing sensation Tommy Johnson, Jr., working his way from the alcohol ranks to nitro.

Really liked that track back then. Cliff Riley put a lot into this track for these " bread and butter" races. His words. It was pretty intense when a car would go off to the pit side with all that grass before the guard rail. The Carey Diesel came barreling from spectator side across to the pit side rail just after the bleachers when i was there once, what a rush. Oil line failure was the cause. Wow, imbeded in my memory. Lots of great memories. Thanks.

The silver dragster with the rebel flag ( Bogie Kell ) is from my home town here in Tennessee. Southern Thunder was owned by Gary Ellis, and also owned Masterbend Muffler Shop ...... RIP Gary

15:30 Bruce Allen lifts after launch, wonder what happened. IHRA axed Top Fuelers, so I stopped following the series. Brings back memories of drivers, thanks for posting.

Does anyone know how many Buick Somerset bodies were ever made? Also, who by chance had them (besides Ron Correnti) and I am not even certain that was a Somerset. Sorry for the question, I love these videos.

Honest question, I thought he had one at Edgewater and at Pomona, was that actually a Thunderbird body?

Nitro: Bob Gottschalk ran one 86-87, painted as a Monte Carlo, Freddie Neely bought Pulde's, ran same paint but no lettering 89-90, Chris Lane drove a Somerset "Desert Rat" 86-87.
Alky: KC Spurlock, Fred Leslie, Mark Woznichak, those are ones I can think of right now.
Oh, Gottschalk's went to an alky driver, I thought that one was called "Fast Company".

Left lane went away after the bike oildown...Ruined the final rounds.

Yeah, the right hand lane had more wins than the left, the bike oiling it down made it worse. Bikes rarely blow like that.
