Elevated Concrete Porch Slab Construction: Laying Steel Deck Pan

  • Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
  • Now that the rim boards are on, we began to lay down the metal composite deck pan. This was more of a challenge than we anticipated but we are making a lot of progress in spite of the winter weather. We used spray foam and liquid rubber waterproofing between the deck pan and house to help prevent water and concrete from seeping down the basement wall below.

You know I thought you created the worst drip edge on your building known to man (as you can see from the streaks of water.)
But now I see it's actually your deck support. lol Wow, corrugated steel, I beams, huge angle iron & concrete.
You know somebody is not messing around when you see those ingredients.
    Well done, very well done.

By squeezing those panels together you have caused some of the tops to bulge upwards. Run a string line down the top and you will see what I mean. These panels are not designed to be squeezed to fit. I have installed these many times across girder expanses and they were dropped in and the panels were butted together and a span strip was placed and tacked across the joint. Since you are going to bury them in concrete just cut them to fit your joist hangers and tack/plate weld them at the joints. You need only to put in a 45-degree girder at the corner then cut the span panels at 45-degree angles to span it.

To get extra strength out of that decking you should find somebody with a button punch and crimp/ punch the little rib where the sheets overlap. This way when you pour concrete over the deck the seams don’t bust. That is how that deck was designed. I have installed thousands of feet of that decking and have tons of experience with it

Since I worked in architectural firms for 24 years. I love the steel decking to pour concrete in as sub flooring. U mentioned to use lumber as form work to prevent overflowing of wet concrete. In reality we use steel angles at end to cover and welded to beams it will be permanent form work for concrete to be poured in.

I watch in envy but in a good way, rooting for you and wishing you the best. Mine is probably a couple/few years away, depending. I used to frame/build houses and have been in almost every aspect of it, including the sketchy and scary setting of ridge beams like yours. For more than the last twenty years, until we recently sold the company, I've been a residential and commercial, licensed, "Private Protective", specialist, in security and everything low voltage. Alarms, fire protection, access control, camera systems, whole house intercoms, sound and more, here in Eastern NC. When you get ready to start roughing that in, if you need/want my help, let me know. Hint; Even in todays wireless world, I would hardwire everything now, while you can. Enjoy watching...Awesome house on an awesome plot !! Keep'm coming please.

I am very much enjoying watching this build because it is so different from how I would do it where I am. I do have to keep reminding myself you don't live in Canada. I keep catching myself thinking how ice heaves and the freeze thaw cycle and the brittleness of -40C temperatures would crack and topple your pillars and an elevated cement pad of that thickness would last maybe two years before it cracked, crumbled and dropped. Plus it would be SO cold to walk on for three seasons of the year. We generally do our decks and porches with treated lumber and floated adjacent to but not attached to the house because of the effect of cold on cement and ground heaves. Plus the wood is so much warmer that just a bit of sun and you can start using your deck earlier in spring and later in the fall. We also have a frost line about 8 feet deep. Of course we hardly ever see a summer day about 80F either so I guess we have our own blessings and curses. Anyway fascinating stuff. Thank you for sharing.
