  • Your past does not define your future-this is the principle of the life of Aric McGee. A tumultuous childhood of relocation and instability set him up to fail, but the Navy made sure that he did anything but. Now a daring pilot, Aric McGee is no victim. He is a Sailor.

This officer - and his grandfather - are precisely what America is all about, what we are supposed to be. I devoted twenty years of my now-aging life to our Navy and our country, so I understand the sacrifices these gentlemen - and their families - have made to contribute meaningfully to the preservation of our freedom. THANK YOU.

Roy Kiefer you put in all those years and now the Government is taking away your dental care

@Mick Funny: Thanks, Mick, your post is my first laugh today . . . and that’s always a good thing. However, I’d like to offer two more-serious points:
      1. I retired, after twenty years commissioned service, in 1989. In retirement, I never was able to - nor would I have wanted to -receive my dental care from uniformed services’ facilities. Instead, I opted for the TriCare Retiree Dental Program, which costs about $45 monthly and provides decent (but not great) dental insurance, that I use with a great local practitioner. This program has been disestablished by Congress, effective 1 January; in a few months I’ll select a dental insurance program from a group of programs that also serve the large Federal Civil Service retired community. I currently have no idea of the concomitant costs and benefits, but - as we said decades ago, when we decided to remain in the service - NO ONE BECOMES A CAREER OFFICER TO JOIN THE AFFLUENT SOCIETY.
      2. This brings me to a FAR MORE IMPORTANT point. Some individuals join the military for job training, or for pay and benefits, or to escape from disastrous community and/or family circumstances, or for opportunities to “see the world.” And that’s wonderful, I respect every one who serves with honor, and I surely understand the sacrifices that they (and their families) make. BUT most long-serving and highly-successful officers and enlisted personnel principally remain in the service for patriotic reasons - they love our county, our people and their fellow warriors. Almost all of us could earn a great deal more, with a lot less hassles and sacrifices, were we to become “normal civilians.” Then, however, we’d expose our loved ones - AND our fellow Americans - to the likely terrors of truly evil groups, be they the Nazi’s and the Imperial Japanese 70+ years ago, or the Soviets for six decades, or currently Islamic jihadists. FREEDOM ISN’T FREE, it’s truly that simple . . . and some of us understand that a life devoted to ensuring and enhancing our liberties is a life very well spent.

@Nicholas Needham: Thank you, however you’re clearly too gracious and complimentary.

What you forgot to mention it is exactly this shared sacrifice that enabled people of all different backgrounds and cultures all work well with each other. The military is still the most diverse organization I have ever worked for, bar none.

hellolin324: I could not agree more wholeheartedly with you, and I appreciate your adding this extremely important point. The EARNED bilateral respect that many of us share with our brothers- and sisters-in-arms enriches all our lives and it also is the catalyst that makes the military (in general) so successful . . . frequently, despite truly difficult obstacles, which certainly might preclude favorable results in many other professional environments. Our beloved nation’s divisiveness is bad and (imho) steadily worsening; I’d respectfully suggest a fundamental and critical reason for this is we no longer widely have (to quote you): “shared sacrifice(s) that enable people of all different backgrounds and cultures all to work well with each other.”

Inspirational. BZ! "My father was not in the picture" is a reality here in America that needs to change. We need more Fathers. I challenge more Dad out there to be dads. My only son recently classified to be in the AIRR rating and I am proud of him. He has all the opportunity to be in a University, but because of my role/influence in his life, he chose to join the service. I can relate to this video.. I owe a LOT to this Great United States Navy... If I will be called again to serve this country...100% I will say YES!
