Excellent, unbiased review! I own a ‘20 390 Adv and haven’t found much to complain about either. It’s a no-nonsense, hassle free bike that’ll take a majority of us where we want to go, without a hitch.
Cool video thx. By the way, your biggest ugly is a user issue! There is no need to go through a 6 step process to deactivate the traction control. Put the function on quickselection, then you only have to press the up arrow button one time and you can deactivate. So it is a 2 step process. The same works for the Offroad ABS with the down arrow button.
Mine will not keep the traction control on the quick select. It replaces it with trip 1 when I turn the bike on and off. I’ve read other guys have this problem as well.
My MY 2022 keeps the settings when the bike is shut off. It also has a ride mode setting where the offroad mode will reduce the traction control meddling to where the bike seems to carry up a rough hill without bogging down, but I have yet to really test its limit. To my knowledge it's just down to the firmware version, so a dealer could possibly update it.
My daughter is getting her license soon, and we have this bike firmly set in our sights to last her a few seasons, and so she can accompany us (I am on a 800XC) on our off-road/mountain road expeditions and explorations. Plus, it looks like great fun and we BOTH know I am going to borrow it a lot!
I have a 2020 390 Adventure with 9000km and about 7000km are off-road. Sounds like I ride similar to you...dirt, gravel, some single track. Swapped out the TKC70s at 1000km and installed Bridgestone Battlax AX41. On my 2nd rear AX41 and going to change to Motoz RallZ for next tire change. I use the Tusk Highland X2 rackless luggage. Get yourself a set of Doubletake mirrors...they work great. Enjoy the Ride!!!
I have the Ktm 390 adventure 2021 since this February and I agree with you! It's a very capable machine! And always put a smile on me when I ride it. Thank you! you have my like and subscription!
Hi Mike! I just bought a 2022 Husqvarna svartpilen 401 which uses the same motor at the ktm 390 adventure. I love the bike. I am very new to motorcycles as well (3 months ago I bought the svartpilen and is the very first motorcycle I have ever ridden in my life). Not sure if you found out yet but all motorcycles sold new in the USA are required by an outdated federal law to have bulb turn signals. The end user/purchaser can then change those out the LED. I was thinking of buying an adventure bike for more offroading as my svartpilen is setup for commuting and on road use mostly. This video was really helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to share it. As a fellow youtuber/lmtv expedition truck owner I will say that your LMTV build out is by far the best DIY self built project I have ever seen. It really turned out awesome! Keep up the great content and I will keep watching!
One of my bikes is a '20 390 Adv. Yeah, I'm as excited as you are. This bike is light, cheap and fun. Almost EVERYONE says they can't stand the pegs. Yes, they're a bit small, but I feel that unless I'm wearing tennis shoes or flip-flops, I am not bothered by the ~30° angle. I had an issue with my bike stalling and some fuses popping preventing a start. I guess I fixed it by always shutting off the bike with the kill switch ... I have no clue what's going on there. I'm happy you're happy and man am I happy with this bike. I've owned over a dozen through the years and I'd rank this one number two or three. Great vid, thanks, S
6:50 I just picked one up... and I found that I set the User 1 Mode to Off Road. I can't see the Trip 1 all the time but I moved that to Favorites. Now my first screen is MTC On / OFF and second is ABS On / OFF... That made it OK. When you want new tires, reach out and I can get you some Motoz tires.

Out there by yourself, it's a GREAT idea to wear that gear even when it's stupid hot. I wish I could ride in just t-shirts and sunglasses, but I'm not into skin grafts or brain/facial damage so...
Thanks for the very good review! It gives me a lot of ideas about KTM 390ADV. its pros. and cons. Here in the Philippines Cebu City the dealers will not allow us to Test Drive the machine.
Thank you for the video, I also have a 390 from 2020. Same problem with the MTC, I contacted ktm: You can make an appointment with your dealer to update your dashboard with the software for the 2021 model. since 2021 the MTC remains off even after turning off the engine (like abs offroad ;)).
Cold start is typical with the ADV models. You have to prime the fuel injectors. Turn the key on, then the start switch and walk away for about 1 minute. The bike should start fine in this sequence.
I have the 310GS. I like the little KTM as well. For off-road and back roads I love these little bikes. The larger adventure bikes are just way too heavy for off-road for me anyway. I like the big brothers for touring and some of the well maintained fire roads, etc. Great review!
I have not read all the comments yet so some of this may be covered already. Regarding a reference to the seat, I highly recommend getting a seat concepts seat and Air Hawk if you’re doing any long-distance riding. As far as the foot pegs go and as far as the boots go, for the kind of riding you doing Baja I recommend you get motocross boots, the soles are hard and doesn’t matter what kind of pigs you have. I actually passed you in Baja just north of Cabo and wish I had made an introduction because you could’ve assisted me but that’s another story, have fun enjoy watching your travels.
I'm 6'3". I just bought this bike. It's the perfect height for me. I highly recommend keeping a lot of the bike stock if you're a taller rider. KTM also sells a handlebar raiser power part that is worth the investment.
You can set the traction control to one of the favourites on the left switch block. To turn it off then you only need to press the favourite button select off and [press.
@@drivetheglobe I've also heard it said that if you replace the original battery with a lithium one, not only will you save weight but the traction control won't reset if you stall the bike. Will try it when the OM battery needs replacing.
Enjoyed the video. I have an XCW 200 and XC 250. Looking for an adventure bike to ride in Colorado. I was set on the 690 or 890, but leaning more toward the 390 after watching many videos. Price of 390 compared to the others doesn’t hurt either. Thanks for the review!
I really love this setup of having a rig with a decent bike on the back. I'd hate to leave my motorcycles and sports cars both behind when I hit the road in early retirement.
@@drivetheglobe how was it partially fixed, can you give a little more detail? There is a complete fix for MY2020-21 bikes in India that adds the ride modes the MY2022 has that KTM refuses to release to the NA and EU markets. My bike has the latest FW as of Oct 2022 and it is still the same.
@@drivetheglobe Enjoy you trip, you have the possibility to set up 2 short cuts(in favorits in your computer) in your settings, the result on the end will be 2 steps, Buton right= short cut 1, and buton up= TC off, (after setting it), accelarate quick above 4000rpm, to slip your tires to acctivate the TC, the bike will realise that you have switched off and stay off , but still a pain in the ass to have the TC on always as default when you switch off the bike, but its still the best bike on the market, in light weight, La Cabra del Monte, greatings from Tarifa Spain, enjoy your trip, KTM always Ktm in any category or CC Kills the others brands, ( exept in Moto Gp) i know, Pitty...
Good choice of machines. That KTM should last you a long time. Not too big and not to small. I have been looking for an Isuzu FRR to build into an Expedition rig and love how you added your bed outside the truck box to give you more usable floor space. Found a 16 ft FRR with a side step door so I may try and get it. I know Isuzus inside and out! Your slide out entry steps have got to be the best idea I've seen yet. The thing I'm thinking of doing with the FRR is. it has a lift gate, which I will modify into a bike carrier lift that will lift the bike up under the added on rear bed box. I ride a Yamaha 1200 Tenere and a 06 KLR that has been extensivly modified. SO this will allow me to take either bike I choose and load one of them easy! Also a tip, I have some nice mirrors that are Ram Mounted to the handlebars are slick for lowering, removing and adjusting. Need to look up the brand as their name has escaped me right now. But I think they are what you need. And are lifetime gaurenteed if you break them. Also here's a tip for some of you guys wanting to fabricate a bike mount, There was another bike carrier made years ago that was pretty neat. Google "Red Ant Cycle Carrier" in the US Patents web site (Circa 1970) to see a bike carrier that pivots off one side and lowers 20 degrees down angle as it rotates to a 180 degree swing. (I worked at the Factory back in the early 70's and have since built up a beefed up version to carry my motorcycles (above) behind my 37' Class A Motorhome. ) It is removeable using 2 reciever hitches like you added to your rig and pivots off the left reciever bar. I set up my pickup to use it too! I use it a lot. To help loading I mounted a winch to the wheel stop to pull the bike up the ramp/ carrier rail and hold it while tying the bike down to the carrier. then I use the same winch to pull the rail around to parallel the back bumper and it raises the bike as it swing around to stowed position. The Patent will spell it all out for you. I can link the Patent if you guys can't find it. Your new Rig is really set up nice. So much more practicle (to me at least) over the Unimog.
Thanks for all the input. Funny, I just received my new mirrors that are based on ram mounts so I probably got the same. Too funny. Good luck with your truck. Sounds exciting.
The "Ugly" that you mentioned doesn't even exist on my 2022 bike. It will keep the settings if the engine is shut off and the key is removed. There's also an additional Ride Mode setting with the choice of Street and Offroad, and in my experimentation, Offroad reduces the traction control. I went up a gentle but decent hill and didn't even notice the traction control doing anything, and going full throttle results in some wheel spin without it going nuts. Meanwhile in Street mode going up an even gentler washboarded gravel hill resulted in noticeable power loss. I imagine it's just firmware, so a KTM dealer might be able to update older bikes with these new features.
If it is just stalling on start up then it's just that the bike is too lean and potentially the valves are too tight. I had my valves adjusted and bought a fuel X system to add more fuel to it and it runs better than stock now.
@@drivetheglobe yeah my dealer told me to use 95 octane which is hard to get by me. I definitely recommend the fuel X pro though. It genuinely makes a big difference.
Ktm it’s the queen of off road bike, here in europe other not conventional choice are Honda Xadv very expansive and with not very height ground but fun, and super light Beta Alp 200 it’s like a mule 😀💪
I've got a Rc390 it spends a lot of time at high speeds I love the little thing. Its so agile for slow stuff barely takes anything to whip it though corners.
lol. I have almost 20 grand in my 2022 350 EXC-F... 13 grand cost and another 6 in aftermarket upgrades.. BUT she is Bulletproof.. and only 250 ish lbs... I am mainly street to trails... and then moto camping.. Had all the big ADV bikes... the older I get the lighter I like my bikes.. However I am still liking the 390 ADV for travel..
Hi, How do the side bags hold up to dropping the bike? Any concerns of them breaking? Thanks! Also I see why you got the KTK it matches the big brother truck, nice color!
Excellent video! I'm waiting for a 390 Adv and trading down from a larger BMW GS.. We're the same size and I want to spend more time offroad than on. Agree with you on the spoked wheels. I think their great but if I want to do a lot of dirt riding, i'll buy a dirt bike. I saw another video the other day where the guys unplugged the abs and zip-tied the chord in place so when they got to pavement, they just needed to plug it in and it automatically turned on. Love your rig! Do you make it to the overland expos?
I am 180 cm tall, would this bike be comfortable for me? I don't want to sit on it uncomfortably. With a very bent knee angle. Is this engine power enough? I don't need a motor to be able to do more than 150 km/h, but it can easily do that. Don't let the motorists get in my way, at red lights you can drive well ahead of them. You can even overtake trucks traveling at 110 km/h with it. Do you know this easily?
@@drivetheglobe UK 2020 model has led indicators and adjustable suspension, but no quickshifter as stock. I fitted the swmotech adjustable pegs (net result pretty much identical to the black dog ones, bigger and flat) , and 22mm risers, which makes it decent for standing (6ft tall). I also own the Yamaha T7 , but I reckon I'll sell it and keep the wee KTM as it fits in the back of my van and is super lightweight to pickup by comparison.
@@drivetheglobe A few videos I watched the guy would bring it in to the dealer it would work for about 1500km and then start having problems again. His end fix was the fuel line. Cheap and easy fix something like 20$ But If it's not broken don't fix it. Hopefully the dealer got this working for you.
The stalling issue is quite common and might be related to the higher-compression nature of the engine. One thing I noticed it fixes it on mine is to give it two throttle twists (till around 2-3k rpm) just after you start it. One other common issue related to stalling is caused by a kinked fuel hose which they usually replace under warranty with a harder one. Nevertheless, this issue manifests in stalling while warm.
@@drivetheglobe that's the problem then. I was like that. It's taken 5 tanks of gas to run the bad out of it. I need to put in RON 95 in mine here in Vietnam. It makes a difference. My motor runs cooler too. 😎
To stop the stall issue you have to let the fuel pump prime twice before starting cold first time. If you turn the key and let that long beep stop then wait another 20-30 seconds you will hear it prime again. Since I learned this I went from stalling every time to not stalling since at all.
Hi! I own a 2022 KTM 390 Adventure and have completed around 6000 km, most of it on the pavement, some over hilly roads, few challenging ones and a little off-road. My height is 5'9" just like you and I weigh around 52 kgs(
Nice review! One thing I find odd is why it comes with halogen turn signals instead of LEDs! I own one in India and it’s all LED. I think in Europe and in Asian nations it’s all LED as well. There’s an youtube channel called Big rock moto and his husqvarna norden 901 has a similar halogen setup in North America. Is there any government rule against LED out there?
@@drivetheglobe As about India, the specifications are different, we get quick shifter as stock and all LEDs set up. What we miss in turn is the adjustable front forks. The rest of the configuration is the same. We also get Metzelers front and back about 30 percent off road and 70 percent on road tires. Oh, by the way, the new 2022 390 adventure has the issue of MTC resolved. Now you remain in off road mode in spite of stalling the bike.
If you say that KTM 390 is a baby KTM, then you should note that there is KTM 125 cc duke, 125cc RC | 200 cc duke, 200cc RC | 250 cc duke , 250 cc RC , 250 Adventure . These are available in India . I'm not sure if it is available else where. In India KTM 390 is the best that you can get. bikes like super duke are very .. very rare. Actually i you must try all bikes that are available in India . Because in you tube we have people reacting to Indian movies . and i wonder why no one puts effort out side India to review Indian bikes . But, if you do that followers are must going to multiply like anything ..
It's a fine small tourer. It is not good off road. All power is top end, ground clearance is awful, suspension is OK kinda, the electronics are intrusive and irritating to use.
Sounds like you don’t like it 😂. I actually love it so far, I rarely use it on pavement and admittedly I’m not thrashing it through hard off road trails.
@@drivetheglobe It's not that I 'don't like it' It's the fact that it is not fit for purpose. Any bike can do fire roads and dirt lanes. This is sold as an adventure bike and I don't see it faring well in places the humble Himalayan would do fine (and no, I don't own or am a particular fan of that bike either).

There is a short cut to avoid your 6 steps to swich off your traction control, you need to have a look in the settings
Thank you! Yes, working on that and a computer upgrade.
You should try a good fuel tuner. Should help a lot with the jumpy low speed throttle
Thank you!
Thank you! Working on trying to secure that software from the dealer.
@@drivetheglobe I'm definitely interested to know how that goes.
If it is just stalling on start up then it's just that the bike is too lean and potentially the valves are too tight. I had my valves adjusted and bought a fuel X system to add more fuel to it and it runs better than stock now.
Thanks for the advice. Probably also the fuel here in Mexico.
@@drivetheglobe yeah my dealer told me to use 95 octane which is hard to get by me. I definitely recommend the fuel X pro though. It genuinely makes a big difference.
@@spadac4543 cool. Have to check that out when/if I’m back in the states
Ktm it’s the queen of off road bike, here in europe other not conventional choice are Honda Xadv very expansive and with not very height ground but fun, and super light Beta Alp 200 it’s like a mule 😀💪
Thanks for watching! I love the bike so far.
you defo chose a good bike ❣️😎❣️cool video
Thank you! Appreciate it. Love the bike!
I've got a Rc390 it spends a lot of time at high speeds I love the little thing. Its so agile for slow stuff barely takes anything to whip it though corners.
Thanks for watching. Glad that you are enjoying yours.
Agreed, I like them lighter too, especially for the stuff I like to do.
Great video, you should try Fuel X Pro, its available for 390 Adv
Thank you for watching. Will check that out.
I'd get under bar or handgaurd mirrors just save factory ones for yearly inspection
Did replace the mirrors now. Going to do an upgrade video soon.
Haven’t seen any updates. Hope things are still going ok
All good, I have several videos on the way.
Hi,
How do the side bags hold up to dropping the bike? Any concerns of them breaking?
Thanks!
Also I see why you got the KTK it matches the big brother truck, nice color!
I dumped it a few times in soft sand without any issues. May upgrade to mosko Moto when they become available for the 390. Love the orange !!
@@drivetheglobe that good to know,
Thank for the reply!
What is that tow hitch carrier ramp setup you use? Also what winch are you using to help load up the bike?
I use this little portable Chinese Amazon winch. Has remote control though. Super cheap. Brand is Newtry 😂😂. Carrier we custom made.
Thank you. Yes I attend most overland expos.
Will be at overland PNW coming up and Virginia in oct
Any update on the stalling? I have seen this in multiple reviews.
Mine seems to have improved through a series of software updates. Also, the fuel in Mexico may not be quite as good.
The bulbs are North America only. In Europe they have LEDs. It has something to do with the US laws and regulations that KTM hasn't gone through.
You are correct. I have found that out as well. Kinda weird.
Du kannst die TC und abs auf die kurzwahltaste legen, dann geht es schneller
Thank you. You are correct about that.
Good job. Do you find it sits on the back without you feeling it bounce around?
Yes, no issues with bounce. We did build a custom mount with 3 separate hitch points.
Great review, thanks. Quick question: which luggage rack are you using, and how far over the back does it extend? Thanks in advance!
I am using the KTM powerparts one. Only extends over the stock tubes by like an inch or so.
@@drivetheglobe thank you! I appreciate the quick reply. Enjoy!
@@frank_jk no problem. any time
I am 180 cm tall,
would this bike be comfortable for me? I don't want to sit on it uncomfortably. With a very bent knee angle. Is this engine power enough? I don't need a motor to be able to do more than 150 km/h, but it can easily do that. Don't let the motorists get in my way, at red lights you can drive well ahead of them. You can even overtake trucks traveling at 110 km/h with it. Do you know this easily?
Yes. Think the bike will be perfect for that. Plenty of power.
great little bike. I would prefer spoked wheels
Me too! Working on that. For now I am definitely swapping the tires.
got a 2020 , really underrated wee bike. Once you get over the pig ugliness of the headlights it's a great bike.
Ha ha. 😂😂😂. I kinda thought the same thing about the headlight. Just thinking praying mantis.
🧡 nice!
The stalling that you have could be the fuel line crimping.
Possibly. Just got back from the dealer and isn’t doing it now. So maybe a computer issue?
@@drivetheglobe A few videos I watched the guy would bring it in to the dealer it would work for about 1500km and then start having problems again. His end fix was the fuel line. Cheap and easy fix something like 20$ But If it's not broken don't fix it. Hopefully the dealer got this working for you.
Do you have quick shift?
Yes, I do have the quick shift and love it.
Thanks for the info. Appreciate it.
Make sure you put in premium fuel too because it's a high compression engine. It also helps with reducing stalls.
@@Froggy-jn9mu I do whenever it is available.
Ahh. Will try that. Thank you.
@@drivetheglobe it’s dumb to have to do it but I swear it works.
@@SticksAandstonesBozo ha ha! It is but I will give it a shot!!
Let's see a RUclips of you loading and unloading that bike on your RV. 🙂
Will do. I can certainly make that one.
2022 fixed the traction controll.
I know. Thank god. I have straightened mine out now with some programming. Thanks for watching.

Could do without the long-ass intro 😃✌🏻
Thanks for

You can set the off-road to a favorite and make it a simple one button press to access. I have the same bike trust me.
Thank you, several people have suggested doing that. Working on it.
2022 cuesta el doble ... Les parece exagerado ?? A mi si ... Pero aún así me sigue gustando , pero buscaré una de segunda mano
Strange? I wouldn’t think that it would go up that much?
The 2023 model is $7399 and over 9K out the door. They were never $6200 for a brand new one!
I bought mine new for $6350, dec 2021 in Massachusetts.
And yes, it was closer to 8k after I added a bunch of stuff to it.
@@drivetheglobe I wonder why they raised the price so much? They're charging a $1000 for setup and freight by me which I think is outrageous!!!
Hi! I own a 2022 KTM 390 Adventure and have completed around 6000 km, most of it on the pavement, some over hilly roads, few challenging ones and a little off-road. My height is 5'9" just like you and I weigh around 52 kgs(
So glad you are enjoying your ktm as well. Just so much fun. Thank you for watching and giving your feedback as well.
There is not- so
Weird. Think they cheaped out on us over here!
@@TarunChoudhry thanks for that clarification. I had heard that about the 2022 too.
It's because they are prone to breaking and if so cheaper to replace than led
You need some BATTLAX tire immediately.
Yep, they are on order
Where's the Cruise Control???
Ha! Nope.
If your still around albuquerque hit me up , coffee and backcountry talk
Will do. I will be around and about there and Santa Fe to service the KTM
Thanks for watching. Yes, there are smaller but the adventure series worldwide is mostly larger than the 390.
@@hazcat640 I hear ya. It will be interesting to see what I feel after another 10k miles. For me, and what I do, the weight and the original price are hard to beat.
