There is absolutely a market for this sort of thing. What many people forget is that having ideas and building prototypes is pretty simple and very different to equiping a factory and gearing up for production, building up a sales and support network and advertising the product for sale. It's that point that a lot of these innovative ideas fall down as the money, time and effort involved is enormous (and very different to 'I have an idea!' concept). If I were doing this (I'm not) I'd be trying to produce something using largely already available components at the outset rather than try for the first product to be entirely novel. Make money selling a simple version of the idea, develop that later. Nice to see you back, I've been going through your old Ioniq videos recently as I I am looking to buy a used 'classic' 28kWh. It's still 'the best' EV in my mind. Cars don't need massive batteries - what they need is to be efficient and have fast charging.
@@ZeroTailpipe Have you tracked the bankruptcy process? Does the new owner of the IP have production plan? I fantasize about living in a midsized or large city with zero cars and lots of stuff like this. Would love to ride this in the states. Millions of American enthusiasts sick of car culture.
I'm afraid that there are only the typical chinese buyers on the market for the company, don't want to see such a great european product sold to china. (Again) ... Can't understand why someone like BMW, Mercedes etc. is not buying the company..
I was also very interested in the biohybrid concept and I'm very disappointed by their bankruptcy...I'm also disappointed that I didn't find out sooner. Today there is not much left of their existence on the web, apart from a few videos including yours which present their prototypes very well. I am also looking at the cityQ project which may also interest me or also in another style the niu tqi GT which was presented at CES Las Vegas 2020.
Thanks. Those two look interesting. I hope the concept endures and someone manages to bring something out for personal use. We may see commercial versions first, I guess. Parts of the concept seem to be getting more generic which may make it more feasible and drop costs - eg the same centre bolt wheels seem to appear on many prototypes from different developers (Bio-Hybrid, Podbike Frikar, that cityQ, citkar…)
Absolutely Love the Bio Hybrid bike. Hoping they make it to America sooner than later. I think there would be an unimaginable demand, the minute they set foot on US soil. The current price for me is very doable. Have you seen the current price of gas? To say nothing of automobiles, Brand new are becoming out of range for normal folks. Even used cars are hitting the roof. My biggest fear is that Big oil, will make every effort to stifle, any of these companies, including Bio-Hybrids efforts, Perhaps they already have, and I haven't seen the info as I am late to this News. This is such a revolutionary idea for retiree's such as myself. I have not ridden in some time, but would look forward to it. When I see the availability of this product in the US, get my name to the top of the list. Thank you for your efforts to publicize this company and there Product. I have subscribed to your channel, and will watch for other postings, Thanks
I went the opposite route - I bought my first eBike to get to work by bike in 2012, then changed jobs so I could go there by foot also, then bought a flat with car garage and some PV panels so I could buy an EV instead of my Toyota Prius. Today I‘m trying to go everywhere by bike, but family trips and shopping are done with my white Ioniq 28kWh EV, so I can see many parallels and I‘m always interested in efficient mobility. Please keep that great videos coming, really enjoing them!
I do like the bio-hybrid actually but the price aren't so reasonable in my opinion. It also fails to be a fully rain proof vehicle which is the most important thing why I would consider buying a velomobile. Its body parts is also uneccessarily heavy, plus the aerodynamics aren't that great. I preferred the "PodRide" because it is lighter due to its cover is mostly made of waterproof fabric that makes it lighter and it is also fully covered which is totally rainproof.
*If* you charge the 48V battery with a AC - DC PSU, the 480 watts req. (10A) will only be about 2 - 4 Amp (included losses) from the wall, so no big problem in EU. 😉
Nice to see you back. That type of bike would work well in cities and small areas but to go on a long journey with the family in them not so good. Don't look particularly weather protected either. Wonder how that would work in hilly areas and what happens once battery runs out due to hills heavy beast to pedal without battery assist.
Thanks. Good point on what might happen when the battery is out… On my Riese and Müller with a Gen 4 Bosch motor there’s surprisingly little resistance with the motor off so it’s rideable. But a 120kg 4-wheeler with two people in it… yeah… THAT would make an interesting video, no doubt :)
One possible snag for a four wheel cycle is that access to London bus lanes might be limited to 2 & 3 wheel cycles under a certain length. Having cycled to work in London I like the idea of a covered cycle with electric assist so I hope that regulations in cities like London will be updated to include a 4 wheel BioHybrid. I agree that cities need to transition from cars and vans to this type of energy efficient vehicles.
While the pricing might seem a little high to customers not used to seeing modern E Bikes, it is priced comparable to offerings like Hase, Ice & HP Velotechnik recumbent trikes. A similar cut down version called the Pony 4 equipped with E Assist, Pinion or Rohloff would not be far off the Bio-Hybrid's price. Until products like these can be mass produced they will always be more expensive than your Chinese built assembly line items.
Thanks. Yeah, recumbent trikes are a fascinating but ‘expensive’, as you say… I quickly checked out that full suspension HP Velotechnk… would love to try one but obviously the geometry makes it hard to add a passenger…
Loved every bit of that concept starting from Schaeffler prototype (search on Fully Charged). We need it here in the Netherlands and 9.450, is high but doable for a family as second car replacement. Could be a paradigm shift for urban environment. Shame.
Agreed. I tried a 2-person E-bike the other with my child on the back… It was meant to support 65kg rear load, but it was really scary to ride … The Bio-Hybrid design would have made it really easy to do that
Thanks for the update on Bio Hibrid by Schaeffler! I am sorry to hear they did not make it out of proto type build to production. I am a PEBL owner and the company BETTER.BIKE has moved their production of the PEBL from USA to Germany due to supplier and fabrication of parts and operation restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic! Is it possible to modify the vehicle to install a generator to help recharge the battery while it's in operation? Or you could charge one battery while using the other and use a switch to flip to the other battery when one battery runs out of juice.
I think vehicles like this are the future. Presently all the models i've looked at are out of my price range. I'm hoping as with other new products we will see them become more affordable as the market for them increases. Today it's possible to buy laptops and smart tv's at reasonable prices which are also far superior to the early models which on release were quite expensive. I'm hoping this will be the case with these vehicles.
They did a lots of work and is the pioneer of this type of mobility ..but new form of mobility needs time & resources and most importantly .. new technologies.
Good to see you back. Do you feel any fitter now you have been using your family electric pedal cycle? Now that you have had a lot of time using it, what do you think are the advantages/disadvantages of using this form of transport?

have you found or considered a decent second (or even third) option, that's close in comparison, to the bio-hybrid (you may have already covered this but I haven't found it)
Not yet sadly. The Norwegian Podbike looks good … but they have a huge order book to get through before there would be any chance of getting one. I really hope they succeed with it though. There’s also the Citkar (?) but it’s primarily for businesses

Visually I find the PODBIKE the most beautiful, followed by BAYK and SCHAEFFLER BIO HYBRID which targets a different group of people. As far as I know, only BAYK and ONOMOTION has established itself in Germany in the field of weather-shielded cargo bikes - regard to the change of the container module ONOMOTION is far more innovative than SCHAEFFLER BIO HYBRID. CITCAR, BAYK and SCHAEFFLER BIO HYBRID are very similar in models and price. Where BAYK and SCHAEFFLER BIO HYBRID currently has the only weather-shielded cargo bikes that can carry another adult person. I can imagine their vehicle regarding the high entrance well for old people. For me, such a bicycle only comes into question if it is cheaper than a Renault Twizy (I know: apples and oranges). My hope lies therefore rather on the PODBIKE.
