      They have to be. That's a life or death place to surf. And I've seen the jetskis get flipped by faster than expected waves in a set and need rescuing as well. Nazare is a whole other level of crazy. Amd the one being rescued has to be on point as well because they can't wait around. You either get on immediately or you're gonna rode out the next wave in the water

      @gatesurfer 6 месяцев назад +2

      It’s the bumps and the speed that make this so challenging. Notice how the board is bouncing off the wave. Waves this big form smaller swells on them which pop up constantly and spontaneously. You need the quickness to react to them and the strength to absorb them. Plus you have to negotiate a path through them. He almost makes a fatal mistake in the beginning in cutting back into the wave after releasing from the tow, but then goes down the line and barely beats the break. But notice how he relaxes for just a second and stands upright for a split second. Then he hits a bump, and that spills him. His knees are stiff and extended and can’t adjust to the shock.
      What’s really interesting is that there’s a flock of birds right in front of him and they fly off just as he falls. I would never imagine birds floating around in surf like this.

    The waves here are absolute monsters and before them using wave runners there was no way that anyone was going to paddle out here. 100 foot monster’s that these guys/girls are surfing is absolutely amazing. I surf but I would never go out and surf these waves. I’m a intermediate surfer and just don’t have the skills to go out and surf anything like this. I have nothing but respect for the people that do,it’s simply amazing to see.

    • @petert3355
      @petert3355 9 месяцев назад +4

      Paddling out there is not the problem, paddling into one of these monsters is just not humanly possible, that is the problem. Thus the tow in.
      This video actually shows the next issue these guys are having on these huge waves.
      Their boards are just not fast enough to be able to surf the really big ones.
      Guess what, boffins are currently working on design and materials to make boards faster so that they can catch bigger waves than these.

    • @tomking7080
      @tomking7080 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@petert3355 I agree with you. Recently Laird Hamilton said that the speed off the wave going up is equal to the speed of you going down so you aren’t moving and that’s why paddling out and trying to stand up on these waves is impossible. I have surfed all over the world. I lived in Los Angeles,Malibu in the late 90’s and was super fortunate to be able to travel the world as a sales training and I would be In a country for 2-3 months,train a office and then go back to LA. I would be in Tokyo,Singapore,Hong Kong,Hawaii,Cape Town South Africa to name a few countries that you were able to surf in. We would also take trips to Tahiti, Indonesia, and Thailand. I would wake up early in the morning and go surf before work. When I lived in Malibu it was awesome because we were right on the beach. I lived with one of the owners of the company I worked for and Drew Barrymore was our neighbor in Malibu. I had met a lot of celebrities and she was the coolest most down to earth person I met in the entertainment industry.

    • @gatesurfer
      @gatesurfer 6 месяцев назад +5

      @@grokuBudzno you wouldn’t. no one else would be willing to tow you in, which makes them partly responsible for your life out there. These people are highly trained and experienced and in top physical condition, and they are only willing to work with people who share that work ethic. This is not for dilettantes.

  • @RB747domme
    @RB747domme 2 года назад +10

    @Dito49 The reason is, that on some features it's shallow from a long way out, and on others, there's a steep drop-off, followed by a long shallow impasse in towards the beach. This lifts the water up quickly, creating very large waves. Obviously certain weather conditions help, adding further amounts of energy into the water, which creates the energy in the wave, and increases the speed of the uplift on the water.
    This is why some beaches only have shallow waves, and other beaches have enormous waves like this.
    I hope that makes sense.
