TDKR was a great conclusion to the trilogy. It had emotion, it had great action, phenomenal music, and really great character moments. You cannot walk away from the movie and not feel something. I personally loved the Robin easter egg at the end. The fan in me appreciated it. All three movies are great, but not perfect, and that's okay.

The only superhero film for decades & decades to make me deeply emotional & on the brink in tears. Took another 7 year for same emotional response in Endgame & then in James Gunn’s SuicideSquad.

Hey Kristian, I’ll just add my two cents on the whole Bane being a henchman,:
He was following a plan, Talia’s plan (she is the head of the league), but he has total autonomy. People always miss how independent he was and that he basically did what he wanted, case in point when Talia tells him not to kill Batman he was going to do it anyway.
I just didn’t like the way he was killed….
    Love your rewatches!

This is an absolute brilliant conclusion to the trilogy i have 3 favourite scenes to this movie and that is 1 when batman is being chased down by GCPD through the streets with the music and the police sirens it gives me major chills, 2 is the scene when Bruce makes the climb out of the pit on his 3rd try without the rope that scene with the chanting and the music sore build up gives me goosebumps and 3 the fight scene between Bane and Batman that fight was brutal and chilling. I also thought that it was a great opening for a Robin spin-off or rather a Nightwing story that would follow on for office Blake at the very end of the movie

Right now, I feel like The Dark Knight Rises is more resonant than ever with everything going on in the world. With everything going on in Russia right now, the tanks patrolling the streets and armed forces storming buildings in the film feel so real. I think the film features some powerful commentary regarding the corruption of our justice system and the dichotomy between the upper and lower class.

  • @josearrocha3377

Oh man. The Dark Knight Rises is my favorite of the trilogy and my favorite Batman movie. Can’t wait to hear you guys talk about it. I’m for sure going to piggy back on this comment section. Some folks are mad weird when it comes to this movie. It’s become the edgy and cool thing to say this movie is a “mess.” Could it have been polished up a bit more? For sure. But you can say that about almost every movie ever. I still feel Nolan and Bale gave Batman their best. And I love that Nolan gave Bruce what no one else has before. Peace. He cleaned up the city and moved on. That ending was fantastic. And Hathaway, it’s not stated enough that she was the first live action Catwoman to portray a comic accurate Catwoman. That Batman Returns Cat lady ain’t it. There’s so much Batman history in this third film and the franchise overall that it’s ridiculous when people say Ben Affleck is the most comic accurate Batman. Comic accurate is more than a suit. Comic accurate is characterization. It’s narrative. And Nolan and the screen writers referenced so many great storylines while telling an original 3 part narrative. The movies that followed may have improved on the hand to hand combat but that’s about it. The stories in these films is top tier stuff.

I love this film. It’s my favorite film of the trilogy and my favorite Batman film overall. It comes full circle with the trilogy and Bruce Wayne’s journey as Batman comes to an end while ensuring Gotham will have a protector be it a new Batman or Nightwing. Lot of what people consider to be plot holes are already established in the other films of the trilogy, such as how Bruce Wayne was able to travel without money or identification. If something like that was shown in the film, people would have complained how we already saw that in Batman Begins and we never needed to see him sneak onto a plane or boat or getting into Gotham, but since a scene like that wasn’t in the film many just say that’s a plot hole when it’s not. That’s just one example, but other criticisms are either things already established in the trilogy or are little nitpicks that doesn’t ruin the film alone or the overall trilogy. I know many will always prefer The Dark Knight as the best and that’s understandable and of course there will always be people who won’t like this film and they’ll have their reasons, but there are a good amount of people who have taken another look at this film within the 10 years it’s been released and their thoughts have changed to a more positive perspective on this film and while it may not be their favorite of the trilogy or favorite Batman film, they don’t rank it or see it as low as they previously did. Christian Bale is still my favorite Bruce Wayne/Batman to this day, his performance in all three films was phenomenal.. I’m glad that after a decade, more people are able to accept this film for what it is as opposed to what they wanted it to be. Apologies for the length of this video, but I really love this film and it’s nice to see more people talk positively about this film. Take care!

  • @Panthror

On how Bruce got back into Gotham: People can go between multiple locations in an instant in this movie anyway. In the one scene Bane takes Miranda Tate/Talia Al Ghul with him from Crane's "courtroom" and in the next scene she's back with Lucius Fox in a completely different location with no Bane in sight. Right after that they flip-flop between two scenes, making it look like the events are happening simultaneous but in different locations, and Batman gets from the one scene to the other in seconds when it looks like the locations aren't that close to each other. Sadly the editors made a bit of a mess of the third act's timeline, but then again, it isn't that weird for a Nolan movie to have a messed up timeline.
Also, I don't think Bale will show up in The Flash, as he's busy shooting Thor: Love & Thunder. We might get Joseph Gordon Levitt in a batsuit though.

The direction Nolan went to make the villain image of Batman at the end of Dark Knight to give him a situation to fall down & rise up during the all time crisis of Gotham was commendable with an ambigious storyline of a revenge story of Ra's Al Ghul after Batman Begins & this being the continuation of dark knight was absolutely commendable
But along the way this was a bumpy ride slightly however very emotional & the last hour made this movie satisfying & him getting the sacrificial hero name & people knowing the truth of harvey dent & Alfred's wish of seeing Bruce at the restaurant fulfilled was satisfying.

What emotion is evoked in this movie through his imprisonment and escape and his 'death'. My only problem really is the league of shadows. Bruce becomes Batman to fight crime in Gotham, yet in 2 of the 3 movie he's fighting this outside force. Also they're in this big real city yet there's no people/extras anywhere.

She eventually becomes the 2nd Catwoman. Her name in the movie is Jen, so we could both be wrong. Nothing about the character ever made me think she was a nod to Harley though. Great show, guys! I’ve always felt TDKT compared well to the OG Star Wars: 1st film that revolutionized a genre, that a vocal minority think is best. 2nd that perfects what the first did and is not only great in the genre but great overall. 3rd that is a flawed but ultimately satisfying ending to the trilogy.

When I watch the sequence of Bale's Batman flying that big ass explosive out to sea, I'm always momentarily reminded of the 60's Batman movie and watching Adam West run back and forth across the pier, bomb overhead with the fuse rapidly burning away, and saying the classic line, "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!"

It's mad that critics of Rises are happy to suspend they're disbelief when Batman appeared and disappeared in the middle of a Bank Vault in a building surrounded by police officers but Batman sneaking into a city that undercover operatives had already successfully penetrated is too much to handle. Ultimately, I think Rises suffers from being a sequel to a very popular film. It'll be interesting to see how Rises ages over time. I think it's very under appreciated.

We saw TDKR at 11:30 pm on a Sunday after smoking some bowls in my garage. We were the only two in the theater, sounds great right? After the film ended I legit said out loud "when does the movie start?" Because I felt so cheated out of a Batman movie. However I did myself dirty and spoiled myself before seeing the movie. Just felt kinda hollow where TDK was so full. I need to rewatch this movie again tho, however I own all three of them and it only trilogy set. Loved these reviews, X-Men movies next before DS2??

I know "Rises" tends to get shat on as the weakest link of the Nolan trilogy.... but I legitimately do love this movie. Thematically, it does a great job tying up all the loose ends established in "Batman Begins", and makes a valiant effort of upping the stakes after the intensity of "The Dark Knight". The cast as a whole crushes it again, with Bale at the centre as Batman. I never had a problem with any of the voice choices through the trilogy, so Tom Hardy's Bane didn't bother me whatsoever. I give it to him for being able to add that muscle to play a character like Bane, and pull off the intimidation and physicality. I think the only let-down is how he dies lol.... And speaking of death scenes, YES i agree Marion Cotillard's Talia's death scene was horrible. Like, y'all didn't have another take lol? I did love her in the role, and liked the reveal of her connection to Ra's Al Ghul. While Pfeiffer as Catwoman is legit iconic, I loved Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Her's really did feel truer to the comics, in that she was a legit con-woman, able to jump from character to character, and be that thief we all know her to be. I recall you guys saying on an earlier pod that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's John Blake being revealed as Robin was stupid. I actually really liked it! I remember my theatre actually cheering opening night when they name-dropped him as Robin. Was it clunky and fan-servicey? Maybe.... But honestly, I thought it was a good way to include Robin in these series of movies. Considering how grounded the Nolan Trilogy is, it definitely would've been off-putting to have *THIS* version of Batman willingly draft a child into essentially a war. Having John Blake fill the sidekick role as a cop, and kind of Batman's secondary lieutenant (after Gordon), in helping liberate Gotham was a good take. Having Blake inhabit traits of all the comic-book Robin's at the time was pretty much an indication that he was gonna play the sidekick role: him being a cop (like Dick Grayson), lost a parent due to petty crime (like Jason Todd), and him deducing Batman's identity on his own (like Tim Drake), and just overall looking to Bruce Wayne as guidance were all sure-fire signs he was essentially Robin. Him having the legal name of "Robin", i thought was just a nice nod. Doesn't have to be his hero alias; it's just a tip of the hat to the fans, and saying: "Here's our version of this character". I think it works better than Zendaya's reveal of MJ in "Homecoming", in that at least John Blake exhibited characteristics of a Robin throughout the movie; Zendaya's MJ didn't (or maybe it was just too subtle). Yes, there does seem to be less Batman, but at the end of the day, i still feel this was 100% BRUCE WAYNE'S movie. And that is more than I can say about a lot of the other live-action movies (well, mostly the 90s movies, where Batman is frequent, but doesn't feel like a character). As a movie, it probably is the weakest, in that it just tackles too much for its own good. But because "Begins" feels so conventional to me, I actually rank the trilogy, favorite to least-favorite: "The Dark Knight", "The Dark Knight Rises", and "Batman Begins". Great discussions guys!

Why does this movie get so much hate?
“I wish I knew”. It has flaws but they are outweighed by so many incredible aspects in it. I love TDKR.
An epic and fitting conclusion to one of the best trilogies of all time.
This really was an “event movie” for me. The hype going into it and being in the theatre opening day was a really special cinematic experience.

I’d love to see Scarface and the Ventriloquist in live action in this Batman trilogy. Now if I were Matt Reeves, I’d introduce Joker in this film, but he is already in prison locked up. And throughout First two and half movies Batman goes to him for information. Then in third film he escapes or something being the bigger threat bts

Did you catch how they showed that Miranda was actually Talia before she revealed it? After her and Bruce do the big thing (see what I did there?) Bruce touches a scar of hers that they show very very quickly. It's the demon tail that Ra's wanted to brand on Bruce after he completed his training. I remember my best friend and I geeking out in theater when that happened and the rest of the theater was just silent lol. I was just curious of you guys caught that.

Bane is not a henchman. Bane is a the equivilant of a military general. Talia is like the president. She tells the general what she wants accomplished and the general makes the plans and puts those plans into action.

I loved Bane in this movie! would say is tight with Ledger’s Joker for me. Love the lines and the way he delivers them. He is underrated, but I agreed they did him wring with the henchman thing at the end after building him as the big bad through the whole movie. Again I’m not into the Ledgers Joker is the greatest villain in any comic boom ever wagon.
I believe Dave Bautista could do a great job as Bane. He did pretty well in BR2049 and Dune. Plus he definitely has the physicality. I dont mind him not being latino. Either way most latin actors who play Latin parts with spanish lines, don’t actually speak spanish and is not credible for any spanish speaker.

This movie has it's fair share of issues, Bane's voice being the one most talked about, however Tom Hardy still gave a very strong and intimidating performance. Although the character's demise was a bit anticlimactic to say the least.

Any chance of leaving spoilers for films until after their home releases (excepting spoiler videos of course)?. Yes Spiderman made a shit-ton of money, but plenty people who want to see it don't go to the cinema, either for health, financial or other reasons. I already heard the spoiler you mentioned in this video but not everyone would have.

I actually prefer The Dark Knight Rises to The Dark Knight which I think has a very messy third act with Batman Begins the best of that trilogy.. The Dark Knight Rises should be thought of as alternate sequel to Batman Begins rather than TDK because as that it works brilliantly.

I like this movie, is it the best of franchise? No, but its such a great conclusion on the way that everything links together, it was great. I always thought Bruce snuk into Gotham by having some connections, some pirates or smugglers etc that he built up in his crime career before Batman Begins. Buts thats just me, trying to fix bad writing. Thanks for the retrospective, it was fun. The Batman is going to be amazing.

I know it may be recency bias, but the Catwoman theme gives me feelings of Leia’s Theme, with LA Confindential and stuff you’d hear in Damien Chazelle’s films cooked inside it as well. It may be my favorite part of this new score

Love you and your crew man! Keep up the good work!
I didn’t like Rises. Then or now. Don’t like the change of city from Chicago to Pittsburgh, I love Pittsburgh, but was jarring for continuity from the first two movies. I thought the whole story and plot was a bit absurd and felt like this movie was not connected to the previous two. I agree that Bane was awesome up until the point that it was revealed that he was just a henchman…….Again. For me this ranks just above the toilet flushing end of the last series. This movie failed for me on so many levels to stick the landing of what was set up in Begins, and then the ultimate awesomeness that was Dark Knight. I would prefer Nolan would have just never finished the trilogy than given us this.
That being said. When viewed as a standalone comparison to “present day situations”, I do have a better appreciation for it.

I would watch Batman and Robin over this movie any day. I get the feeling Nolan didn't care much about making a third instalment, and is clearly running on autopilot here. It looks and sounds like a Nolan movie but it's shallow and boring, yet it's still somehow trying to convince you that it's epic and meaningful. Script and editing are just plain bad. This video is more entertaining than TDKR.
    Good stuff as always.
Also, can you please hook me up with whatever Winston is smoking to think Hathaway is better than Pheiffer.
