- In the hallowed landscape of Normandy, France, the Battle of Cherbourg unfolded as a symphony of thundering naval and ground artillery pummeled the German port defenses.
The streets echoed with the rhythmic cadence of gunfire as American GIs closed in on the strategic port city. Pinned beneath the gaze of German pillboxes and unforgiving 88-millimeter Flak guns, the Allies faced German audacity and stiff resistance.
Amidst the chaos, Corporal John D. Kelly braved a hail of machine gun fire, navigating through enemy defenses with a pole and TNT charges to destroy a pillbox and save his buddies.
Lieutenant Carlos C. Ogden, a fearless leader from Fairmount, Illinois, confronted a lethal artillery barrage in another sector. Despite his grievous injuries and a bullet grazing his helmet, Ogden wielded his M1 Garand grenade launcher and advanced towards an 88-millimeter Flak gun already damaged by one of his grenades. He aimed to silence it for good.
Such was the spirit of the fighting men led by Lightning Joe Collins, one of the youngest commanders in US military history tasked with capturing the most crucial port the allied troops required for the liberation of France.

My grandfather was with the 4th infantry when they laid siege to Cherbourg. He would never talk about it
Not an uncommon thing…
whatever
Shadow banning my comment is bs
My grandfather was with the 4th all the way from chasing Romell out of Africa up through Sicily stuck on the beach at Anzio then stuck on the mountain at Monte Casino then all the way up through Rome then Europe. He went in at 16 they pulled all his teeth on a boat after Africa
Most soldiers who refuse to speak about their experiences are often (sometimes incorrectly) afraid or others finding out about the horrible things they did. War is horrible, many soldiers feel like their actions were inexcusable. But often it's the exact opposite. They were heroic actions. Some soldiers have trouble calling themselves heroes. But their guilt deprives future generations of their stories...
Fairmount, IL - my hometown! Thanks to all of these brave men for their service!
Another great video
I wish you'd throw in a map every once in a while.
Ya I don't know where Cherbourg is off the top of my head. I assume North coast of France. A quick map would be great.
Brave Bastard & a Fearless Man!!!!!
My grandfather Frank Cormeir was on the USS Heavy Cruiser Tuscaloosa, 1937-1945, was a crane operator as a duty station, a gunners mate in his battle station in the #2 turret firing an 8 inch rifle he helped his crew bombard Utah Beach and Cherbourg as well, hitting troop concentrations and artillery positions.
When the fighting moved inland, they were sent to Iwo Jima, but thats a different battle
82nd and 101st did not have the mission to capture Cherbourg. Their mission was to prevent enemy forces from affecting the 4th ID coming ashore on Utah.
the dark channels are fantastic. but sometimes lack finer detail accuracy. if you have the correct units def list them for us to recognize!
@@xLong_Johnson😂 I can relate.
Hey Dark Docs. At 12:16 There's a guy lookin' through a unique optics of some sorts.. Was woderin' if u might be able to get some info on what that might be. Looks very interesting. Love the channel & the other Dark channels. Keeps up the great work. 💯🙏🍜

love the guy who does the voiceover he always conveys a sense of breathless excitement haha⚛😀
baddassss
The French locals near the landing grounds sure had it tough then, hiding in their wine cellars. Many became 'collateral'.
WhooHooo!!!
Let’s Go Fellas!!!
He wasn't crazy he was a warrior a believer like King David. We salute Him in faith!
Except the port was a mess it took a long time to clear away debris and get the port working.
"M-1 Garand/Grenade Launcher"? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
interesting story, but it looks like you put in the wrong photo for John D. Kelly at 10:44, which appears to be that of Korean War Medal of honor recipient John Doran Kelly.
It makes sense to show pictures of Lightning Joe with four stars towards the end of this piece. However, the early pictures should be of him with just two or three stars, not four. And, this piece seems to be mostly about Lightning Joe and thus I submit the title should be changed to reflect that.

They trained jungle fighting in Oahu, one of Hawaii islands....... there was no battle there. My father trained there too.
can you do one on the battle of Mortain 30th Infantry Division 120 regiment
My Pop was there on the hill , wounded the first morning after the town of Mortain fell the previous evening. They were surrounded and cut off for 4 days under attack by the Second SS Panzer division. They were offered terms of. The American officer told them to “F” off . Pop said if he had only told them “Nuts”we would have been famous . As it went they became known as Roosevelts SS. The division took over 18,000 casualties and my Pop made it from the beginning (D+6?) to the last month. Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster , Purple Heart, CIB,Bronze Star , and Presidential Unit Citation for Mortain. There’s so many incredible battles untold. The Battle of Thirimont was another .
My grandfather was driving the boat that delivered the troops to the shore. He told me one day about how he thought he was hitting logs when it was soldiers helmets hitting the boat whom had drowned in first wave as he was in second.
The germans only surrendered because they were out of ammo
Before that the made such a mess of the docks because they blew them that it couldn't be used the restof the war.
There's another video on it which tells the story. If people can find it watch it. Neither story takes away the bravery of the soldiers. God bless them all
It states that the U.S.S. Texas took a hit in the conning tower. The Texas was a battleship. Only submarines had conning towers.
Correcto mundo. It would have had to be the bridge which, if directly hit, would most likely kill most of the ranking officers, depending upon where on the bridge it was hit.
4:08 “The CATHOLIC LEADER…” It has no bearing on the subject, so why point it out? Sounds bigoted to just bandy that about.
Did I miss some context somewhere?
Mention was also made Collins was one of hundreds of thousands of soldiers from Louisiana. Fun factoid.
Seriously, what difference does it make he was Catholic? That struck me as a strange thing to include
"THAT'? HE WAS AN "IT"?
During WW11 uncommon valor was common. The greatest generation in our time. They were brought up with the fear of GOD instilled in them.
The Germans destroyed the port facilities. It took nearly 3 months to get it operational.
Came here to say that. The story of Cherbourg isn't complete without two missing pieces. The first is the destruction of the Mulberry harbors by a gale in late June, which virtually halted replenishment of ammunition, fuel and equipment, without which the Allied advance would grind to a halt. The second is that, between the well-planned and executed German defense and the demolition and mining of the harbor, it was mid-August before the port saw even limited use.
7:04 is that Conan O'Brien?
unbelievably dumb title
Sometimes I think the person assigning titles of videos doesn't even know which video is being titled and just randomly picks a title.
❤❤❤
Interesting item, but what is annoying in Dark whatevers is that after all those years you still don't know how to properly pronounce the ie and ei in German names. Heinkel tortured into Hinkel, von Schlieben into von Schleiben and what not more, I lost track. Please do research of how to pronounce foreign names before you record the texts, it will give a quantum quality boost.
Not only is your point well taken, but in many of these military videos, the wrong syllables are stressed in many words, especially names of ships, towns, etc. In one video, in the name of the Japanese battleship Yamato, the first syllable is stressed by the narrator, when it should be the second.
Pay for German pronunciation lessons 😮
Speaking strictly for myself with German being my second language ( my father was Austrian ) I couldn't help noticing that too and I find that rather... amusing...but I agree, the right pronunciation of German names would make those great videos even greater...
Wtf does that have to do with the story? Take ur bored ass to another site thank you
HI IM WINNING LOL

*US troops, not American.
It just shows that trump is smarter than his supporters
Sorry, this ended up in the wrong video
@@Charles-k9g5yNo worries. You're a "more-on" either way. Obviously.
