  • Gavins Point serves as the southern most of the six main stem dam projects on the Missouri River basin system. At the end of June 2011, the dam was releasing an historic 160,000 cubic feet per second of flood water through its spillway and power house. The large amount of water actually represents only a fraction of what the dam was designed to pass through its gates in an extreme flood event. Thankfully, there are no plans nor any conditions currently present that would require higher releases. Video by Kevin Wingert, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District.

This dam was constructed for safety, and now is used for recreation. If it hadn't been for allowing people to build along the lake to enjoy it, the flooding would be a lot less severe.

American heroes Meriwether Lewis and William Clark counciled with the Yankton Souix near this site in 1804.

Thank God for the ACE. These guys have been taking a bad rap for the flooding along the Mo. River. People need to stop think of all the flooding the dams have prevented since being put in. Would we want all the water coming from north to have free course down the MO without any dams. We'd really have a mess then. Seems to me, the problem is people should have had sense enough to NOT build on a flood plain, or build fancy homes on a sandbar like Dakota Dunes. Don't blame the ACE.

What do you propose about fixing the sedimentation problem in Lewis and Clark Lake now especially since the Spencer Dam broke and has gone. All that sand coming down the Niobrara River clear from Wyoming. Last I read the lake was nearly 40% full of sedimentation before the dam broke. I have yet to see anything done. That dam should have never been built below the Niobrara, but “politics” decided it would be best there. If you want to see a flood let a dam like that go out and I lived through the Spencer Dam on the Niobrara breaking.
