Deidara is very strong, Sasuke only survived this fight because he had the Sharingan and the lightning style, and even with this advantage he was pushed to the limit and was almost killed.

If Sasuke's character is just irrelevant, he wouldn't have lived from that explosion. The author even decided to give Sasuke a new jutsu just to live. It is clear in that fight that Deidara was far superior than Sasuke.

A plot is designed that way to make the ends meet. Deidara was supposed to die because it's part of the plot. If kishimoto as a writer won't make it happen then what's even the point of the main plot? There would be no story. So, stop this plot armour bullshit and accept it. Sasuke is much stronger than he looks. He outwitted Deidara by miles in battle IQ and combat. He didn't suffer any blood injuries in that whole battle. That alone should be enough to tell you who's more skilled.

In my opinion, it was a little bit sad that Deidara died. From the akatsuki my favourite character, better than sasuke. Sasuke was not really interesting.
