imagine living in a society where they tell you in school constantly during fire drill and firefighter visits (if they do that) that you never take the elevator in a fire. And then you do it....
Where I'm from it's common for fail safes to be built in to elevators so when the fire alarm gets pulled in the building the elevators stop working, you literally can't use them.
I remember some buildings are designed in such a way that when the fire alarm is activated, empty elevators won’t operate. It’s a good deterrent for those who want to take a chance.
Moral of this clip is perfectly clear: NEVER take the lift/elevator during a fire evacuation of a large building with an elevator system. You could get stuck in it when the electrical system malfunctions with fatal consequences.
In my opinion, it's common sense to not use a elevator in a fire. If the woman would have followed Otis's instruction in the first place, she and her son would have made it.
@@rafaelalbertocayuela8661 yeah but sadly panic and smoke inhalation can cause people to not thing clearly and chose what their brain believes to be the fastest option out.
I know the mother made the wrong decision, but none of us really have the right to judge. She was told not to take the elevators, but the only thing on her mind was to get to the ground floor as fast as possible. Panic makes people do irrational things, we don't think properly, and we can make terrible choices.

@@brandeeddcom I don’t think you really read the comment. In a situation like this where you are panicking so much most people loose common sense. Yea elevators can malfunction and never use them in a fire or fire drill. Back when I lived in a big apartment building we had one elevator that would malfunction constantly and it would stop at random either at floors or in between and then either reset and go back to lobby or continue on to the next floor. I got stuck in that elevator for close to 5 minutes before it started to move again. I tried to avoid using that elevator if I could.
I watched this scene once before and once after being a mom. Definitely cried after becoming a mom seeing this scene again. I know it’s fake, but just to imagine having your child in your arm and watching them die with you. Still makes me cry when I watch it again.
As a volunteer paremedic, I've seen some tramatic stuff, but nothing close to see someone burnt alive. It's something that would scar someone forever and I don't think any person should ever go through something like that.
I can't even explain how bad I felt for Otis right there when the elevator opened, more so than for the mother and child. Now don't get me wrong; their fates is absolutely horrific and I would not wish that on my worst enemy, the pain and fear must have been beyond imagine....but their ordeal is at least over. Otis isn't. He would have had that image burned into his mind for the rest of his days and knowing him, he probably felt guilty too even though he did nothing wrong and absolutely everything he could. That in my opinion is worse because the anguish never ends.
The mom holding her baby reminded me of the plaster casts of the victims from Pompeii. I’m kind of mad at the mother for going in the elevator when she’s was specifically told not to. Her baby didn’t deserve to die like that.
I always had anxiety going in them as a kid when staying at my Nan's flat (14th floor of a 15 floor block) I was always afraid it would break down and I'd be trapped, now I'm even more anxious to go in them. They should make them so they all stop working in a fire. Absolutely heartbreaking 🥺
I've always known about not taking elevators in a fire but I thought it was because of the risk of getting trapped. I NEVER thought it could be because an electrical fault would send it the wrong way into a fire and cook me! Jesus fucking christ.

For anyone that's confused In a panic she would have tried getting to the ground floor faster by using the elevator, (Never Do This In a Fire) not realising the one she used was he one acting up and by pressing the button to go down the faulty electrics sent it up instead, opening it onto the fire floor which when the doors open, would've been the equivalent of torching someone with a flame thrower. The elevator would have jammed on that floor and the doors most likely stayed open too because of the electrical issue, you can see from what's left that she knew the huge mistake she'd made and used her last seconds to comfort and try to protect the baby. 😞 Poor Otis was the last one to see them alive and the first to find them after. i feed sorry of the fire fighters in real life that sadly have to bear witness to situation like this.
