Been there before Mat, there will still be enough meat on the damper bolt, once some heat is applied that will come out. I had the same fun doing the suspension on my Abarth. Just remember that you need to keep the flame away form the alloy arms. Good luck.

Was gonna say the same too, with that amount of torque on the bolt. An idea would be to heat it up real hot and then use an impact wrench or ring head spanner to get the bolt out... I'm gonna wager that although he had access to the lift, they probably didn't provide other tools..?
Really love this guys humility when making videos though, good fun to watch!

Careful no to strip them though

    • @jesseskye3547
      @jesseskye3547 4 года назад

@@thamil1365 Second option is to take a metal dowel/rod, spray some penetrating oil on the bolt and then hammer the top and surrounding areas next to the bolt. This sometimes needs a good 15-30 minutes of hammering... Every few minutes, try applying some force to the bolt and unscrewing it, if it budges then rotate it 45 degrees and back again, this just helps to prevent stripping the thread and to work the oil into the grooves.

Its all learning dood :) Weld the biggest nut you can find/fit over the remainder of the bolts and impact gun em out. I would aim for a 30 or 32mm nut as the bolts you broke look to be m12 or m14 so you should be able to get a good weld bond between the center of the nut and the remaining stud, fill the nut in the center with weld and the heat transferred through to the hub should hopefully be enough to free it off. This problem is mainly due to GALVANIC CORROSION where mixed metals are in contact, i.e the alloy of the hub and the steel in the bolt, some say things like copper grease can help prevent this but it will always be a problem on vehicles with alloy subframes and suspension components. Good luck with the fix dood. Great videos :)

Galling is the primary cause of dissimilar material surfaces mating to one another.
Galvanic corrosion is also big issue on machinery, but galling is more likely the cause in this instance.

I like your work and enthusiasm for undertaking what may be a very simple job on a Honda, but is actually a lot more complicated on an Audi. I know from personal experience how much of a pain those pinch bolts on the front knuckles can be to take out. Air hammer usually needs to come to the rescue. For everything else, I would recommend a proper penetrating oil, (WD40 is just not strong enough) and more use of impacts and heat to break those stubborn bolts loose. Keep up the awesome work and updates on the S5!

And another tip, if youre tackling something you expect to be tight or seized, give the nut/bolt a few really good raps with a hammer or spanner before turning it, it can make such a difference. I had a couple examples today where I gave a couple 22mm nuts a good bash today and the bash itself loosened them, whereas the same component on a different machine the day before was a real mission

just a tip for anyone interested in taking the pinch bolt out from the top, when it is seized in there, which it likely will be. Break the head off the bolt by loosening it untill it snaps, then tighten the nut on the opposite side, this will pull the bolt through, because the bolt only has a part thread at the end you will need to take the nut off and add washers from time to time, but eventually it will come all the way out.

So many things went right and it's a complex job. I think you could still claim a victory at the end of that day. You got to use a car lift for the price of a sandwich. Imagine how hard it would have been if you never got that first bit of luck. Keep at it! Try to have a contingency plan next time. It would be nice if someone could give you a ride home or if you could use a ride share app. The app would cost more money, but that's why you have a plan B with some savings stocked away. You didn't mess up anything as far as the car repair was concerned. Those things happen to everyone from time to time.

I broke a bolt that was holding up my petrol tank a few years ago, while replacing an ABS sensor that went up in behind the tank, so I just went into butcher mode and drilled a new hole next to it and put a cable tie in to hold it up. It held perfectly fine for years until I sold the car..

    Unlucky pal, it happens
Try heating up seized in bolts and use an impact wrench..

I'm sure the ARB bolt snapped because the suspension was hanging. Theres more tension/ pressure on the bolt it will never loosen off under that stress. You need a jack under suspension to take the weight off. Although dont reckon it wouldve helped the bottom damper bolt. Audis mix of aluminium and steel components is murder to work with. Maybe 2 days soaking in WD40 and some oxy/act would do it. Good luck.

stick weld a nut on then heat it up before you try to wind it out... suppose it sounds easy in theory but worth a go! good luck!

WD 40 is rubbish mate. You need a proper penetrative not a lubricant.

Dan Dan WD40 isn’t a lubricant. As the name suggests it’s a water displacer.

Actually these days WD-40 is a brand name. You can get all kinds of sprays from them.

Wow that sucks mate! Btw it's not that dangerous to drive with only a spring or only a damper for that matter as ive seen it done for months lol
