Just a tip: if you're ever hurt and need to call for help, especially if your chest/lungs hurt- WHISTLE instead. The sound goes farther and is easier to make, requiring only a mouth full of air instead of a lung full. When I go deep wood hiking/camping apart from food & water I always carry an axe, survival knife, gun, first aid kit, intruder alert, solar powered motion activated garden light, 900-mile laser pen, powerful flashlight, and m-80 firecrackers. If I hear noise around my campsite I light a m-80 and throw it out. After the big bang things got quiet. I even shouted "Don't mess with me MFs or I will hunt you down"
Why are the solo campers not bringing a gun? I go on a few solo backpacking trips a year, it's always relaxing and I always carry Glock 19 with a few extra mags. Carrying a gun in the wilderness is truly a no-brainer, for the wildlife and crazy people. I am grateful that I always carry in the woods and had to use it once when a cougar was stalking me while I was cooking a steak over a small fire, everything got really quiet and I happened to see a flash of something moving between the trees about 30 yards away in my peripheral vision or on my 4, after keeping my head on a swivel and feeling vulnerable I fired a shot into a dirt hill about 15 feet away and saw a big mountain lion running away from the spot I saw the movement, and it had crept 10+ yards closer to me in the minute or so since I saw something moving. Having something so big move so quickly and quietly was terrifying. I'm not a small guy either at 6 foot and 200 pounds. This was one of the most terrifying moments in the woods. I also was elk hunting with son in a remote area and we turned a corner of a dry river bed to see a cow moose with a calf about 25 feet away, this was way scarier than the cougar story as moose are massive and kill more people than cougars do. Also, my son was only 11 at the time so I was worried for his life more than mine. After staring at the moose for a few seconds I told my son to slowly start walking back and the moose charged us that I would take it and he was to climb a close by tree and use the satellite phone. Even though I had my 7mm hunting rifle sling on my shoulder and a 40 cal pistol on my hip, I didn't want to make any sudden movements as I was slowly backing away, it took a few steps forward and looked like it was about to charge me, after walking a little quicker and trying not to seem like a threat, we got about 50 yards away and I was finally able to get my rifle ready just in case, glad it didn't charge or that I didn't need to shoot it. My biggest concern was my 11 year old son was going to watch me get trampled to death by a cow moose while sitting in a tree and waiting hours for help 😢.
