"I'm not a humble person" - I relate so much with this. I pray that God will have mercy on me and won't let me go crazy in this spiritual path considering the huge pride I feel in myself. I mean I'm not just proud but often I feel that I despise those who I feel that are beneath me. It's terrifying.

Pride was one of the first sins God conquered in my life after becoming a Christian. There is a verse that I go back to when I need a reminder:
"For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?"
      1 Corinthians 4:7 ESV
If God has given us everything, including our talents and natural potential, then why boast as if God hadn't given it to us. Furthermore, those same people who struggle more with what we find trivial have been gifted by God in different ways that might not be readily apparent.

It is not easy to realise how magnificent God is & how appropriate it would be for us to be humble "in full view" of Him.
From one sinner to another, you are not alone in your struggle my brother

Perhaps that idea of "By their fruits you shall know them" could be an answer.

I would connect it to "what works in the long (longest) run", which might be a modern take on it.
      Would anybody disagree?

      Thankfulness is a good start.
But remember false modesty isn't the way either.
I think really being aware of one's surroundings can help. For me it helped seeing that I'm not sustainable on my own. I'm connected to family, friends and a culture. Without them I wouldn't be where I am today. There were times where one is missing and life is a lot harder that way
From there you can go even further

I feel that here is where God helps a lot. He will give you so much crap in your life to help you stay on the right path. Of course, if you accept and own the bad things which will happen in your life. This is why also Elder Cleopa was always insisting on patience. For our world full of pride and sins the only thing we can do is accept all the suffering God sends in our way and go through them with patience.

It helps to notice how fleeting our pride is & how limited it is. How simply it can be overturned, how worshipping pride is like building a house on a foundation of quicksand.
With this awareness, one by one, you can learn the futility of such fleeting hollow ideals/ idols & dispense with relying on them/ worshipping them when they arise.
For me, meditation helped me notice my pride & other vanities, but any other way that you can attain awareness of your internal thought environment can accomplish the same result IMO.

4:23 "...the only way I could stay on the path out was to be completely calm and completely relaxed and not respond to the pain. Not magnify that pain and suffering"
That should be a proverb. Infact, I recite this to myself almost everyday in during these terrible times I am going through:
Do not Fear. Stay focused, keep it steady.
    .

      Yes; couldn’t agree more.
That was a profound dream containing great wisdom and truth.
Really dwelling deeply on this…..”the only way out is not adding to it…”
True, not just of how we respond to the big life events but to the commonplace everyday situations.
“Reflecting who or what you worship” is a deep truth that should cause us all to continually evaluate our responses to others and life’s events.
      Lord give me strength.
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit says the Lord.”

I guess love is really the antidote to pride. Like they say, and I have witnessed this myself firsthand, pride can sneak into and taint every virtue. Even humility can become prideful. I am starting to understand that true detached love is the only way to keep purity.

I’ve noticed recently how many people in my church place the second great commandment of loving thy neighbor as thyself ABOVE the first commandment to love God. I’ve always wondered why they’re listed in rank order because I was taught that we love God by loving others. But like you say, there is a limit and now I’m noticing people walk right out of church membership for church not living up to their sense of inclusiveness and equality/equity. Loving your fellow man (or family member) can lead you away from loving God when taken to an extreme is the lesson I’ve learned.

But ultimately it shouldn't be that way, real love doesn't lead away from God.

(Hindu) meditations helped me see various modes of being where I was consumed by unhealthy patterns of thinking & action.
It helped me spot my big ego & it helped me laugh at the biggest illusion our egos cling to --> the illusion that I have ultimate control of what happens to me, when in truth no matter what I do, my life is very much in God's hands. Sure, I do have control over what I do & there are patterns to life; certain actions often bring certain outcomes. But I don't truly, ultimately, have control of what consequences my actions bring & how my life turns out in the end.
The last level of this journey is to let go of your life.
Letting go of my life is the hardest thing I have ever done. It's also hard to not fall back into my ego's illusion of "being in control of my life", so to speak.
But each time I let go, it brings me joy that is quite unbeatable. It's pure love, pure joy, pure calmness.
I hope all of you get to experience it & live in it, as soon as possible

I feel that rejecting the teachings of all the Holy Fathers to do pagan meditations is not the the right path to achieve humility. Remember that demons are not sleeping and they can give you the illusion of achieving different experiences. This is why all the Holy Fathers insisted on obedience to a spiritual father and on remaining in the Church.

@@sfappetrupavelandrei There are certainly dangers to spiritual explorations outside of the hierarchy of those wiser than you are, or those of better understanding of God than you have.
I try to find the wisdom of God wherever I can find it. I have faith that if I stay truthful, what is the path towards God's grace & what is not will sort itself out.
I often find that the wisdoms other religious traditions teach can often also be found in Christianity, but I needed another type of explanation to what the people of the Church I interacted with could provide.
Sadly, in the Churches of my area, wisdom is often preached down, dogmatically, rather than humbly trying to explain wisdom in simple words I & many others would be able to understand. Connected to our living experience. I see a lack of humility in Churches worldwide (I see a lack of humility in myself as well).
The lack of humility in the Church did disillusion me from the Church in the past.
I try to find the wisdom of God wherever I can find it & I will make mistakes along the way. I've also learned that exploring other religions was the only way for me, at that time of my life, to find my way back to God. Let's judge not what paths others take, rather humbly try to help them get to the end destination of seeing God, sooner rather than later, if we can help it.

There was a tree before a cross.

I like the comment about one looking like the object, or spirit, that one worships. I must worship male pattern baldness. The Platonic form ... baldness. I know baldness when I see it. Can we say the same thing about God? I know God when I see the incarnation (patterns ) of the Good? Good - that which makes our perception of being whole? How do we "know" we have left Plato's cave seems to drive most of Western philosophy and makes liturgy (incarnations in my view) very important to answer this question. Sorry for rant .. reading up on some Plato and it takes awhile for me to figure the dude out. This convo just reminds me of Plato's cave for some reason. Thanks gents.

"I know God when I see the incarnation (patterns ) of the Good? Good - that which makes our perception of being whole?" --> it's one of the mechanisms I use to discern when I go towards God & when I travel away from him. You certainly seem to be on the right track here.

I hope you'll pray for me I've been going through some mental health issues, best wishes to you and yours.

If you say you believe in God but in your mind you are picturing Mickey Mouse, you are worshiping Mickey Mouse, no matter what you say. On the other hand no one can truly picture God perfectly. So that means we must be humble enough to allow God to create in us the truest picture we can imagine. Which he has in the image of Christ.

What Pageau said from 0:18 to 0:55 reminds me of a scene from Game of Thrones where Ramsay Bolton saves Theon Greyjoy before it being revealed as a lie. I distinctly remember seeing Ramsay's face as beautiful and strong up until the truth was shown. He became ugly and insane looking.
